Gah I love this song, and I love Jakob. His stuff is just fantastic! He paints gorgeous, weathered landscapes with his lyrics and "raspy" voice. it's just GOOD... :)
Most definitely underrated. This cat's lyrics are damn good. And even while songs start out in a traditional progression he creates something unique and original around the chords in every one.
a few years ago a couple went out to dinner. later that night the babysitter called and asked if she could put a sheet over the clown statue in the kids bedroom. the father said "get the kids out of the house and I'll call the police. we don't own a clown statue." it turned out that the clown was a murderer escaped from jail. if you don't repost this message on 10 videos the clown will be in your bedroom tonight at 3am with a chainsaw sorrry I did this I was scared
His voice always reminds me of Bob Dylan, there are indeed similarities but are not exactly the same. Jakob's sounds also 'very unique', just like a softer, smoother version of Bob Dylan in his own lyrics and music. love ♥
If you listen to the whole song, he's talking about not being able to quit. The other verses fill in what he couldn't quit. The first is a war, the type of war isn't specified. The second, of course, is loving whoever he is speaking to. The third is reacting to judgment, and doing what he does anyway. Just my take from the lyrics.
Jakob is the double of Bob in his younger days but he must be allowed to be his own man------best thing he done was to do a solo album without the wallflowers to show just how talanted he really is in his own right.
what do you all think this song is about? it's an amazing piece of music. it's got that dark, beautiful quality, but does anyone know what it's about, or does anyone have an idea?
rosenbar, one would be hard-pressed to name any musician who could stand toe-to-toe with Bob Dylan. Forget the fact that he managed to tap into the energy of an emerging era - he was a songwriter, second to none. He had an onstage charisma and presence that few can hope to possess. - However, in many ways Jakob Dylan is more accomplished. And I'm with you, I don't think Jakob stands in anyone's shadow. He has his own Voice.
Jakob is an amazing artist. He didn't have to use his dad to get where he is. He writes JUST like his father, but at the same time in HIS own way. I mean Bob was an ass at times to people, but Jakob is a really nice guy.
I am a huge Jakob D. fan--I am sandwiched in between Bob's generation and Jakob's. While many of my peers loved Bob, I always found the sound of his voice to be enormously grating. Jakob can out sing his dad hands down. I think his writing is as strong too.
I find Bob's to be more emotional, it really works with his music. It's also unique. It doesn't make him sound like "a rambling shizo"..it just gives the song more power.
Whereas Jakob's is too much like all these other people's..it's also too rough. It grates my nerves a bit.
it's pretty stupid how there are probably more people giving jakob sympathy for comparisons to his father than there are actually people comparing him to his father. i doubt he needs either such glaring demonstrations of ur charitable understanding or comparison. stop repeating what a hundred comments have said before u. good is good.
I guess I'm guilty of comparing him...SORRY JAKOB! haha. Being such a huge Bob fan! But I'd never listened to anything by Jakob Dylan, and my counselor said he was good...But anyways! All that babble leads to he's really talented! He's a bit like Bob, as he's folky, but...I can see the difference.
would it be a good/clever idea to present a ticket of jakob dylan to a person who loves bob dylan but probably doesn't know jakob? i'm just not sure...
yeah it must be tough to keep being compaired to your father and know people will never find you better than your old man,one of the greatest artists in the world
exactly. musicality is genetic, and i don't think he could escape that binding...and quite frankly i'm glad he can't. i love both his and his father's music.
and just because someone sounds like another artist...why does that always make people dislike that artist?! check out matt costa, definite dylan nfluence, but costa makes it his own...you'll see why he's been my favorite singer for the past 2 years (Y)
I always feel bad for people with famous parents because no matter what they do, people will compare them to the family. Esp in cases where they look alike, Sean Lennon, Jakob Dylan, Dhani Harrison. And then when they do sound alike, it's even worse. I'm sure they get tired of it too. Jakob is amazing.
Cool. As long as you start listening to Bob, because in my ears he is the best that has ever existed. Last night I saw Jakob on the David Letterman show and enjoyed his music very much. Much more than when he was in the Wallflowers. Maybe it was because it feels like something Bob would do and he kind of sounds like him too. Genetics are funny like that but Jakob is on his way.
Jakob is pretty good, but his dad is a way better song writer. most ppl dont know how many hits he wrote. He wrote tambourine man, blowing in the wind, quinn the eskimo, and many other top 40 hits.
What a shame to judge an individual by either one or the other of his or her parents. Would any single one of us born really want to be a 'carbon copy' of either parent? I shudder to think of such a world! While I have admired different facets and qualities of each of my parents, and I possess their DNA, I am certainly a totally different being and would never attempt to stand in my father's shoes, nor would he want me to! Jackob is a product of his father and his generation -- let him evolve!
dude comparing is how we judge greatness, if we didnt compare ppl (father or not) how would we know true greatness? jabob lives in a shadow i know, but that just proves how great bob really is. im not saying jakob is bad, but dude come on, eric clapton, mark knopfler, bob dylan, john lennon, brian wilson, buddy holly, i could go on and on. jakob is talented, but not when compared to the greats.
I quite agree. I think Bob Dylan's great but the reason that I've just ordered Jakob Dylan's new album isn't because he's the son of Bob Dylan, it's because it sounds like a good album by someone that up until this morning I'd never heard of (He was on the BBC Radio) Someone's going to call my a philistine now!
yeah i had heard his stuff with the wallflowers and thought it was good, then i heard this album and had to buy. it has great melodies and jakob puts his whole being into these songs. You really can't compare him to his father, they are both great but totally different. I actually like Jakob's voice alot better than Bob's
Absolutely beautiful song!!!

I think Bob went through so much more adversity and came in a time where people needed a voice like his make heard what the people needed to hear.
Jakob has to fight off that huge shadow that his dad left, but he has an amazing voice, great lyrics, and tons of talent!
kachimint 3 years ago 3
His voice is better than his dad's - much more mellow.
Most of the time, Bob sounded like a rambling schizo -- both on and off stage.
Jakob comes across as a breath of fresh air, and is quite the gentleman.
