If marriage was a representation of something purely religious, I could see them not allowing them to marry on that basis. However, it has a wide standing of social, economical, and government recognized benefits that they are being denied to these people. I agree that perhaps they shouldn't be allowed a *insert religion here* marriage if that religion is opposed to gay marriage, but a lot of straight couples get married without any religious backing, myself included. Why not allow gay/lesbian couples the same courtesy. It is an outrage that they live as second class citizens. Things like visiting a loved one in the hospital or the adoption issue has a big impact on the quality of life they are allowed to lead.
It's like one religion opposing another. They do not have the right (anymore) to impose their own religious views or to stop them from practicing their own. If they are given the basic right to practice religion, how can they turn around and stop some one else from practicing another basic right?

If marriage was a representation of something purely religious, I could see them not allowing them to marry on that basis. However, it has a wide standing of social, economical, and government recognized benefits that they are being denied to these people. If they cannot even take legal recourse in a separation, you're letting a parent/child/person suffer needlessly. Your explanation on this Dan, is awesome! I agree that perhaps they shouldn't be allowed a *insert religion here* marriage if that religion is opposed to gay marriage, but a lot of straight couples get married without any religious backing, myself included. Why not allow gay/lesbian couples the same courtesy. It is an outrage that they live as second class citizens. Things like visiting a loved one in the hospital or the adoption issue has a big impact on the quality of life they are allowed to lead.

Jefferson was a deist, but he also gave public federal money to build religious churches, schools, and to teach religious classes, and to evangelize. I think gay marriage should be voted on by people of the states. It is a moral issue, not a religious one. There are Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Jehovah's Witnesses, and atheists who oppose gay marriage. It is not like telling someone to pray to Allah 5 x a day or take communion. It is not a central tenet of any one faith, so it does not constitute enforcing one religion on the rest of society, as England did 200 plus years ago. No state ever voted for gay marriage

@DEVORRA7 Paul claimed to have a vision of Rabbi Ben Jesus while traveling to Damascus. He was a disciple of the Rabbis teachings. He was Not an apostle, as there are only 12 of them, and as far as Corinthians and Romans that Paul wrote about, he was concerned his 'new' gentile converts would slip back into the ways of their old pagan religion and practice the orgies that they had in those temples.

How about doing the same for a married couple that has sex while the woman is on her menstrual period, or the non-virgin bride? The bible says to stone them to death, nor should you cut your hair.

@DEVORRA7 I'm saying that their relationship wasn't just platonic, and yes I do believe they were lovers. There was too much said in the bible to indicate they were more then friends. When Saul married David off to his daughter he said "Now you are my son-ln-law in the twain" meaning twice, it would imply that he was aware of David and Jonathon's relationship. When he cursed Jonathon for defending David, and when David lamented Jonathon's death 'saying their love surpassed that of any woman'.
