@historatia My uncle told me a story about Dday well some days later, he was part of 6th airborne and they had 63 POWs (mostly staff officers and thier aides) to take back to HQ. They gave them to a passing US MP unit and radiod ahead to say thay were coming and to expect 63 prisoners for interrogation.
16 made it to HQ. The rest apparrently, according to the MPs had made an escape attempt and were machine gunned in the process.. No formal investigation took place.
WWII is still too fresh in the documented banks of the historical record for revisionists to claim something else happened. Its all there in black white and color. We had a German POW camp near my house. They had it made. Instead of slave labor they were allowed gardens and set up individual produce stands. They sold their produce and used the money to go to movies and local diners. There was justa six foot fence around the compound and during the day they moved about freely inside and OUTSIDE the fence. There was just a bed check at night. It was so good that many of them immigrated back to the ares , after the war , and settled here in the Mid-West.

Those who survived related the horros including the GI's shooting to death the women risked throwing bread over the camp fence.

It was decided that discharged German POWS would be used for duty in former occupied Nazi Territories. Durys for interned Nazi Germans were removing mine fields placed by retreating German troop. Germans used for labor, defusing unexploded bomb + other dangerous work. Usually the German in SS Uniforms were chosen first to be drafted in this work force that was of your own making.

@historatia My grandfather was a German sergeant in a Pioneer regiment ( horse drawn Pontoon bridging train ) He ended up in an American POW cage in 1945 , a fenced off field without shelter . They took the remaining German Medics away despite there being typhus and dysentery among the prisoners , and the (white ) guards beat a black GI with a wire whip because he towed a drinking water bowser into the compound without permission . some of that is exaggerated. the reason for the open field camps on the rhine is because for some reason, american soldiers captured so many germans that they didnt know where to put them. maybe the germans should have fought on instead of surrendered wholesale.
Rheinwiesenlager is largely forgotten, it is a blemish on the honor of the US Army and especially Ike Eisenhower on whose direct orders the starving of the POWs took place. With the cooperation between the US and German government no exhumation may take place. My wife's cousin survived one of the camps, barely, only to be sent by the Americans to France as a slave laborer. An estimated 800,000 POWs died in these camps. Shame

The krauts were good fighters but the Russians killed off most of there more experienced soldiers in Stalingrad and across the eastern front. The US just bombed the shit out of the krauts but they fought hard even though the Russians would have defeated the krauts without our help(the US). The Russians deserve most of the credit.

In Stalingrad our soldiers lost because they fought against an overwhelming superiority. They where cut off from ordnance, food and medical care. It was wintertime with -30° C. Under this conditions everybody had lost this battle.
Our soldiers kicked the shit out of the americans in the battle of the bulge. Here where I life in the hürtgenwald area the americans lost about 50000 soldiers. They got asskicked in the "Wehebach" Valley and in a minefield which was called "Wilde Sau". The american regiments have been destroyed by artillery, tank and mortarfire. Our Panthers and Tigers have blown up the american tin cans which where called Sherman and Pershing.

The German prisoners should have been transferred to the Russians and kept in Russian POW camps. The Russians were the ones doing the bulk of the fighting, they should use these prisoners for slave labor.
The last POW is wearing a white helmet with red crosses, a very rare thing be to worn. Also he is wearing a 'classical' German M35/40/42 helmet instead of an M38.

Yes, Truman intentionally cut the rations of German POWs to "teach them a lesson" since they started the war. They didn't starve to death, but they did feel great discomfort.
Compare this to the Russians, where hundreds of thousands of Germans died. (Including the "good German" from the "Pianist.")

In 1945, there was a food shortage - a bloody war was just fought and ended in Europe - and that affected how some POWs (and civilians) were fed.
This is also in addition to the US having to care for hundreds of thousands of sudden prisoners.

He says that it would be far better to be captured by the Americans. Or, on my Mother-in-law's side. Her father was also a soldier. He was captured by the Czechs. They were not good to the Germans and she tells us that they raped many women. They would take over your home and sent the Germans out of the land. They fled.
one of my grandfather's duties in France and Germany during World War Two was guarding German prisoners I just realized he might be in one of these type of videos

@porty500 ... From those (take pre-surrender) taken and registered almost 98% made it and most of the rest are accounted for from deaths from wounds, etc. Of those taken on the battlefield just over 10% never made it to the registration of POW's, in other words "murdered along the way".

@historatia My uncle told me a story about Dday well some days later, he was part of 6th airborne and they had 63 POWs (mostly staff officers and thier aides) to take back to HQ. They gave them to a passing US MP unit and radiod ahead to say thay were coming and to expect 63 prisoners for interrogation.
16 made it to HQ. The rest apparrently, according to the MPs had made an escape attempt and were machine gunned in the process.. No formal investigation took place.

he had to go to texas and work with horses on the field all day
when war was over, he didn't came back. Not because he wasn't able to but because he fell on love with the countryside and the work he had to do.

We had a German POW camp near my house. They had it made. Instead of slave labor they were allowed gardens and set up individual produce stands. They sold their produce and used the money to go to movies and local diners. There was justa six foot fence around the compound and during the day they moved about freely inside and OUTSIDE the fence. There was just a bed check at night. It was so good that many of them immigrated back to the ares , after the war , and settled here in the Mid-West.

@SpeedyNeutrino43 My father a Hauptmann in the Luftwaffe brought his entire command back from Norway after the surrender, became a POW with all of his 300+ men ALIVE in Denmark. Most ended up in the US concentration camps in the Rhine. The US sent some to France for slave labour. Of those who became American prisoners, LESS THAN HALF were still alive two years later. Those who survived related the horros including the GI's shooting to death the women risked throwing bread over the camp fence.

It was decided that discharged German POWS would be used for duty in former occupied Nazi Territories. Durys for interned Nazi Germans were removing mine fields placed by retreating German troop. Germans used for labor, defusing unexploded bomb + other dangerous work. Usually the German in SS Uniforms were chosen first to be drafted in this work force that was of your own making.

@historatia My grandfather was a German sergeant in a Pioneer regiment ( horse drawn Pontoon bridging train ) He ended up in an American POW cage in 1945 , a fenced off field without shelter . They took the remaining German Medics away despite there being typhus and dysentery among the prisoners , and the (white ) guards beat a black GI with a wire whip because he towed a drinking water bowser into the compound without permission . I'm English but that stinks .

Almost 98% of the western allies POW's came back alive, from German POW camps, and those that didn't, died of illness and bombings (as the US prisoners that were fire-bombed by the raids on Dresden. My father had the good fortune to end up in a Canadian run camp. The US camps after the war cost hundreds of thousands of young German lives.

Roosevelt insisted on UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER and no attempt to arrange battlefield talks was allowed.

Of the 350,000 that came back from Norway, and surrendered in Denmark, less than 250,000 made it back to their homes! In France they dies at 20,000 a month. Mr. Justice Jackson wrote to Eisenhower to express his extreme objection to it. There were 4.1 MILLION Germans in slave labour outside Germany in 1946-47. (more)

These men, not allowed POW status by Eisenhower (who got back over 98% of his captured in good shape) STARVED into disease and death hundreds of thousands who had survived, and hundreds of thousans more to their deaths in France as "force labour" dying at the rate of 20,000 a month until it was stopped.

You have a severely distorted understanding of history. Yes, many Americans died in the Battle of the Bulge, but in the end they routed some of Hitlers best troops and prevented the taking of the port of Antwerp. HItler, who was truly insane even sent boys to die for his warped cause. I suppose he's your hero. What a role model.

Google Rheinwiesenlager about American Death Camps: more than half a million were caged up in rain-soaked open fields along the Rhine River. No housing for them, not enough food and water. They had to dig shelter in muddy open earth holes and stand in line for hours for a cup of water and totally inadequate rations. They went to the bathrooms in open pits and some fell in and drowned. Guards terrorized the POWs psychologically without any reason. Medical care for many of theseutterly exhausted.

some of that is exaggerated. the reason for the open field camps on the rhine is because for some reason, american soldiers captured so many germans that they didnt know where to put them. maybe the germans should have fought on instead of surrendered wholesale.

Rheinwiesenlager is largely forgotten, it is a blemish on the honor of the US Army and especially Ike Eisenhower on whose direct orders the starving of the POWs took place. With the cooperation between the US and German government no exhumation may take place. My wife's cousin survived one of the camps, barely, only to be sent by the Americans to France as a slave laborer. An estimated 800,000 POWs died in these camps. Shame

The krauts were good fighters but the Russians killed off most of there more experienced soldiers in Stalingrad and across the eastern front. The US just bombed the shit out of the krauts but they fought hard even though the Russians would have defeated the krauts without our help(the US). The Russians deserve most of the credit.

In Stalingrad our soldiers lost because they fought against an overwhelming superiority. They where cut off from ordnance, food and medical care. It was wintertime with -30° C. Under this conditions everybody had lost this battle.

Our soldiers kicked the shit out of the americans in the battle of the bulge. Here where I life in the hürtgenwald area the americans lost about 50000 soldiers. They got asskicked in the "Wehebach" Valley and in a minefield which was called "Wilde Sau". The american regiments have been destroyed by artillery, tank and mortarfire. Our Panthers and Tigers have blown up the american tin cans which where called Sherman and Pershing.

The German prisoners should have been transferred to the Russians and kept in Russian POW camps. The Russians were the ones doing the bulk of the fighting, they should use these prisoners for slave labor.

Actually, it was not untill 1943 that we (the US) came out of the depression. War production was the reason. And post- war, we emerged as the strongest, richest empire in the world. Our Marshall Plan, a money give-away basically, saved war torn, bankrupt Europe from communism. Every European country involved in WWII emerged a poor, weak, fucked up nation. Truman's Marshall Plan was persicely a money giveaway. We (The US) gave Western (and some of Eastern) Europe tens of billions each in 1940's dollars. Yes, Truman intentionally cut the rations of German POWs to "teach them a lesson" since they started the war. They didn't starve to death, but they did feel great discomfort.
Compare this to the Russians, where hundreds of thousands of Germans died. (Including the "good German" from the "Pianist.")

The "good German" is Captain Wilhelm Hosenfeld. He died during the 50s in a Soviet POW camp, and, years later, he was honored by Israel for his efforts to help Jews.
BTW, "The Pianist" is a film by Roman Polanski, a Jew who survived the Holocaust in Poland, including living in a Ghetto. But thanks for being an arse who ignorantly dismisses "Hollywood."

There is a website called IMDB where you can actually look stuff up to educate yourself on films. I am a huge movie buff and I have watched tons of non-English movies. What that has to do with anything is a mystery.

FACT: The US had the second best rate of German POW survival rate, after the British. Thousands of German POWs were housed in the US, some of them even earning COLLEGE degrees while interned in these camps.
In 1945, there was a food shortage - a bloody war was just fought and ended in Europe - and that affected how some POWs (and civilians) were fed.
This is also in addition to the US having to care for hundreds of thousands of sudden prisoners.
The US is not perfect, but it's not barbarous.

Your "fact" is screwed just like your logic you goose. The survival rate of the relatively few German POW's shipped to the US might have been good. However the survival rate IN GERMANY of POWs later redisignated DPs (Disarmed Personnel) was horrific. Why did the US redesignate POW to DP? To circumvent the Geneva convention!!!!

What? Look at the current condition of Europe - it is flourishing. No one who has studied history, especially the Cold War and post-WW2 period, would agree with your sentiment. You are simply trying to add some anti-American spin while ignoring the historical realities of the situation.
It isn't as if Europe has suffered due to the Marshall Plan, which appears to be your suggestion.

basic psychology my friend. Stereotypes are based on the commonalities that a race displays. eg Americans are on average overweight, loud, ignorant of other nations values or beliefs etc Sure, there are exceptions, but these are EXCEPTIONS.
Steriotyping is a useful tool based on facts. Ever heard of the expression "profiling"?? Your government is promoting it !!!!

The americans, and british were decent to the german pow's. However, the russians were extremely cruel, and worked many german pow's to death rebuilding europe.

I'm American. I married a German. My Father-in-law's father was a soldier. He told us a story about him one evening about his father's worry about being captured by the Russians. He says that it would be far better to be captured by the Americans. Or, on my Mother-in-law's side. Her father was also a soldier. He was captured by the Czechs. They were not good to the Germans and she tells us that they raped many women. They would take over your home and sent the Germans out of the land. They fled.
