The Maroons, runaway slaves brought over from Africa to work as sugar plantation slaves, introduced their methods of meat preparation to the Arawak indians of the Caribbean. The Arawak combined these African cooking techniques with local Caribbean ingredients
The Caribs, a native Caribbean group known for their aggressiveness and their cooking, would construct makeshift grills of green sticks over an open fire to prepare jerkies and grilled meats

Oh, and another point to Davidinfo13 about there being more Jamaicans outside then in, Jamaicans were pretty much begged to come to Europe after the World Wars to replace the workforce that was lost in those wars. So no one was 'running away from Jamaica' so to speak. Get diagnosed and treated fast man and stop seeking attention. Get a girlfriend or something. To everyone else, do your own research, love one another, preach peace and stay immune from the world's yet undiagnosed virus - HATE.
From a psychological viewpoint just ignore people like davidinfo13. These type of people are fuelled by hate and go around hunting for negativity in order to cling to some kind of superiority that they feel they have over others. Selective memory is key to this virus, making them completely forget or not bother to research any negative aspects of their own culture or history. And I think that this virus should really be diagnosed and treated in order to stop it from spreading. Stay immune guys!
this slave master puppet fi go backwhere him forward from zen him and all those jews, lebonees?,chinese?, and who else and stop try bring down the people .
all these people do is exploit jamaica and rob the people
It really does not matter where a "Jamaican" is from or lives, A Jamaican is a Jamaican whereever they may be. Just like a Christian is a christian even if they are not living is Israel, England or ay country that is considered home of christianity. Jamaicans are all over the world and equally people from all over the world can also be found in Jamaica, which is welcomed and considered the norm for Jamaicans. Out of many , one people is the country's motto. That says it all.
Ahhhh....we Americans aren't all that bad. It is not like we all get up in the morning and pray to Satan and drink the blood of freshly slaughtered puppies or something. Relax dude. Americans are not out to get you.
Hmm, let's see: lie about WMD's start iraq war kill a few hundred thousand women and children. Dispense with Geneva Conventions, torture at Gtmo, Abu Ghraib. Remember My Lai? Invent cdo shit, rate it AAA, foist it on investors the world over, trigger world wide recession. Have to wonder sometime about the evil American empire.
And if I were to turn that around and say that all Jamaicans are criminals and are poor because they are not bright and smoke ganja all day....I am sure you would take exception at that.
99.9% of Americans had no actual hand or real say in your list of offensives. Those were just terrible policy decisions on the part of past administrations and the greed of big business. If you lost your shirt with those investments then that is just as much your fault too.
You blithely neglect to mention that in a democracy it takes a majority to elect an administration. Can't have it both ways I'm afraid, on one hand to claim a participatory and representative democracy, the shining light for the world, and on the other to wash your hands and say it's the administration's fault.
It is quite probable that no country is without sin, but in relative terms, when a superpower sins, it's generally a super sin, in scope, inbreadth, in depth, in damage, which makes it generally more egregious, particularly when accompanied with the often concomitant and foolish hubris.
It is not quite probable that no country is with out sin. The fact is that no country is. Even your Jamaica is not in that it is a relatively poor and crime ridden, under developed, and has a high crime rate. Most Jamaicans make the logical decision to seek a better life in countries suck as Britain, Canada, and the so-called Evil US. And Jamaica itself depends on a very beneficial economic and political alliance with US.
So does that make you complicit what you blindly call evil?
And while it is not outrageous to hold Americans for electing leadership that makes some bad policy decisions, I can't name the country in this universe where the average voter actual has a real say in day-to-day govt. and economic decisions.
As far as what the leadership and boards of corporations do, that never has and by design never will be democratic. That is not how private enterprise and large corporations are run. Unless I am running that company or an officer, I take no responsibility.
Here are the facts. Bush junior ran for the presidency twice and was elected twice, by a majority of the people. (yeah, you can debate chards all you want). Bush's started a war based on lies and was approved and cheered on by the House and Senate. The representatives did solicit the opinions of the citizenry before voting for war. Now you can try to wriggle out of those facts as best you can, but those are the facts.
I vote that we "extraordinary rendition" your ass to a little island where you can spend your days with my goat herd, just like we "extraordinary renditioned" McDonalds and their burger shit off of our island. BTW, in case you're confused about the term "extraordinary rendition", google it and you see who invented it, where it was invented, and what it was used for. Read the New Yorker's article "Outsourcing Torture", fucking torturing naZi bastards.
I am sure you could list a litany of ills and terrible things the US has done. There is no special skill or intellect needed to dig up that kind of dirt. I am not defending. However, the underlying truth is what the USA does matters.
Can't say that for your country - God Bless it. But that is the truth.
Don't care about McDonald's on your island. I am not a franchise owner nor an officer in the company. Why do you think that news would make me feel badly?
In your opinion the USA matters and Jamaica does not. It's all a matter of perspective isn't it? If you were extraordinarily renditioned, if you were the victim of torture, if your country had been bombed to bits, you might just prefer a little island with coconut trees. God Bless you and your country, I think you need it more than I and mine (you've got a lot more innocent blood on your hands).
I guess the fact that things Jamaica does that affect it's people doesn't matter. By 'matters' you mean it has to affect the world internationally like a the way a corporation does.
The USA is one of the sickest countries in the world. It's problems are not so readliy apparent as Jamaica's but the USA needs to see a psychologist.
I suspect that you are having a comprehension problem. The statement "it is quite probable that no country is without sin" asserts that it is highly likely that every country is with sin. Think it through. For you to say that is not so suggests a brain fart.
Let the facts speak. Fact, slavery by England followed by neo-colonialism was the genesis of current Jamaican society and its current problems. Fact: poor Jamaicans seek employment abroad. Who will fault a man who contracts to dig a hole for a devil in order to feed his family? If said Jamaicans voted for an idiot and his false war, for naZi-like torture, for foisting worthless loans onto others, I'd condemn them.
Who has a history of aggression in the world? In recent times, 1961 Cuban invasion, 1989 Panama invasion, 2001 Afghanistan, 2003 Iraq to name a few. Besides that, the who has led many covert wars and assassinations in the southern, central and caribbean regions eg the assassination of democratically elected Allende, the covert Nicaraguan war against the sandinistas, many interventions in Jamaica, Guatemala etc When you paint yourself as a friend, it's more like a wolf in sheep's clothing.
"Marijuana(Ganja) popularity is fuelling the crime problem". what kinda statement is that. Cocaine is. You claim you are jamaican and in the arm forces and making an asshole statement like that.
I liked the fact that they showed the "dark side" of Jamaica. Me and my sister talked about Jamaica yesterday, I said that I want to go there one day, and she said that she would like to go to the "real" jamaica, not the part that commersials shows or magazines have pictures of. No country is perfect, each has it's less "friendly" parts, including Sweden where I live :P
But about the video... it just made me hungry:P I wanna go there and try their food!! :D
I just thought it was an interesting fact for those who might not now, especially after the narator spoke about how there are more Jamaicans living outside of Jamaica than there are still in Jamaica. No offense intended.
It is not unique...there are more people of Irish heritage than who live in Ireland; most Jews don't live in Israel; there are just as many people of Italian heritage who live throughout the world than who live in Italy.
you forgot a very important part of the history> The maroons who fought the British for 100 years and both surrendered into a peace treaty. Look up Accompong Town, St Elizabeth. Ancesters still live there and can still tell the story. You can also visit. Several years ago Prime Minister Tony Blair apologize to the people pf Jamaica for enslaving the people. Good Job for the First time but since this is watched by many include Marcus Garvy, Michael Manley and so many others.
I thought the same thing. I have Maroons from St. James as some of my ancestors. I have also have ancestors that migrated from Cuba to Jamaica (so some of my relatives look Latino). The thing to realize with the documentary is that it focuses mainly on Kingston and the Maroons don't have much presence there.
Understood. However, if you watch other "Street Food" segments, they go into a little more detail regarding the food itself, not so much the history of the country. Not a complaint, as I learned alot, but just an observation.
"most of these island type of places are shitty culturally and in most every way, ..especially if the population has a large percentage of blacks"
So even though I can go to any corner of the world and hear some form or derivative of reggae, ska, or dance hall which all come from this tiny country of mostly black people, we should still accept your statement as true?
I see that you decline to state which country you are from your profile. You must be ashamed of it and probably rightfully so.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My statement is true because I have firsthand experience of living in the U.S., UK, and various places in the Caribbean. You, on the other hand, have no clue
Oh...you must be the OMNIPOTENT ONE. You know all about me and my life experiences. Wow! I am so scared of you and your limitless knowledge of the universe and all who inhabit it.
What is it like to look in the mirror every morning and see God looking back at you?
But one thing does bother me, Mr Yahweh: You did not answer my question. You are God after all so you should have known in advanced that it as not a god damned rhetorical question.
"Shitty Culturally"? Who this dog shit, offspring of pathological murderers, hate mongers and scoundrels, think him dealing with? U can't help urself because it is only natural for people of ur ilk to hate a particular group of people for something that they have and u don't - SOUL and a strong culture. Liberate urself from the hatred that was instilled in u..........trust me it will make u a better man. "Difference is not deficiency"
davidinfo13 of course you're not going to say where you're from. Bet it's some war-torn, scary country. I notice that it's always someone from a country in the middle east or western sahara that have negative comments about jamaica.
@davidinfo13 Then why did you watch this and then make a comment? You must be one bored dude. I'd encourage you to go get a job or go back to school. Do something with more with your life than sitting around on the internet watching something you don't like.
Over all a good report, a good documentary, but it didn't focus too much on food, &it leftthe indian community out completely. It was a good introduction tothe real Jamaica but where was the street food?--Not much was focused on that!
Agreed - they didn't talk about the East Indian people at all. I thought about the Germans too - but they were mostly in St. Elizabeth and not in Kingston.
great topic

From a psychological viewpoint just ignore people like davidinfo13. These type of people are fuelled by hate and go around hunting for negativity in order to cling to some kind of superiority that they feel they have over others. Selective memory is key to this virus, making them completely forget or not bother to research any negative aspects of their own culture or history. And I think that this virus should really be diagnosed and treated in order to stop it from spreading. Stay immune guys!

And I am sure your country is without sin.
Please point to which country is perfect and has never made a bad decision or suffered an unintended consequence from its policies.
Wait....
Wow! I received a comment from a guy who lives in Heaven!
Mxyzptlk562 3 years ago 2
And if I were to turn that around and say that all Jamaicans are criminals and are poor because they are not bright and smoke ganja all day....I am sure you would take exception at that.
99.9% of Americans had no actual hand or real say in your list of offensives. Those were just terrible policy decisions on the part of past administrations and the greed of big business. If you lost your shirt with those investments then that is just as much your fault too.
Mxyzptlk562 3 years ago
You blithely neglect to mention that in a democracy it takes a majority to elect an administration. Can't have it both ways I'm afraid, on one hand to claim a participatory and representative democracy, the shining light for the world, and on the other to wash your hands and say it's the administration's fault.
riceandpeas1 3 years ago
It is quite probable that no country is without sin, but in relative terms, when a superpower sins, it's generally a super sin, in scope, inbreadth, in depth, in damage, which makes it generally more egregious, particularly when accompanied with the often concomitant and foolish hubris.
riceandpeas1 3 years ago
It is not quite probable that no country is with out sin. The fact is that no country is. Even your Jamaica is not in that it is a relatively poor and crime ridden, under developed, and has a high crime rate. Most Jamaicans make the logical decision to seek a better life in countries suck as Britain, Canada, and the so-called Evil US. And Jamaica itself depends on a very beneficial economic and political alliance with US.
So does that make you complicit what you blindly call evil?
Mxyzptlk562 3 years ago
And while it is not outrageous to hold Americans for electing leadership that makes some bad policy decisions, I can't name the country in this universe where the average voter actual has a real say in day-to-day govt. and economic decisions.
As far as what the leadership and boards of corporations do, that never has and by design never will be democratic. That is not how private enterprise and large corporations are run. Unless I am running that company or an officer, I take no responsibility.
Mxyzptlk562 3 years ago

Read the New Yorker's article "Outsourcing Torture", fucking torturing naZi bastards.
riceandpeas1 3 years ago
I've read it.
....and?
I am sure you could list a litany of ills and terrible things the US has done. There is no special skill or intellect needed to dig up that kind of dirt. I am not defending. However, the underlying truth is what the USA does matters.
Can't say that for your country - God Bless it. But that is the truth.
Don't care about McDonald's on your island. I am not a franchise owner nor an officer in the company. Why do you think that news would make me feel badly?
Mxyzptlk562 3 years ago
In your opinion the USA matters and Jamaica does not. It's all a matter of perspective isn't it? If you were extraordinarily renditioned, if you were the victim of torture, if your country had been bombed to bits, you might just prefer a little island with coconut trees. God Bless you and your country, I think you need it more than I and mine (you've got a lot more innocent blood on your hands).
riceandpeas1 3 years ago 3
No it is not a matter of perspective.
You would not be complaining about everything the USA does if it were not true.
And the USA never bomb or invaded your island...maybe except with annoying tourist and bongheads looking to get high.
Mxyzptlk562 3 years ago
I guess the fact that things Jamaica does that affect it's people doesn't matter. By 'matters' you mean it has to affect the world internationally like a the way a corporation does.
The USA is one of the sickest countries in the world. It's problems are not so readliy apparent as Jamaica's but the USA needs to see a psychologist.
toiletholder 2 years ago
I suspect that you are having a comprehension problem. The statement "it is quite probable that no country is without sin" asserts that it is highly likely that every country is with sin. Think it through. For you to say that is not so suggests a brain fart.
riceandpeas1 3 years ago
Let the facts speak. Fact, slavery by England followed by neo-colonialism was the genesis of current Jamaican society and its current problems. Fact: poor Jamaicans seek employment abroad. Who will fault a man who contracts to dig a hole for a devil in order to feed his family? If said Jamaicans voted for an idiot and his false war, for naZi-like torture, for foisting worthless loans onto others, I'd condemn them.
riceandpeas1 3 years ago
Who has a history of aggression in the world? In recent times, 1961 Cuban invasion, 1989 Panama invasion, 2001 Afghanistan, 2003 Iraq to name a few. Besides that, the who has led many covert wars and assassinations in the southern, central and caribbean regions eg the assassination of democratically elected Allende, the covert Nicaraguan war against the sandinistas, many interventions in Jamaica, Guatemala etc When you paint yourself as a friend, it's more like a wolf in sheep's clothing.

No offense intended.
notess25 3 years ago
It is not unique...there are more people of Irish heritage than who live in Ireland; most Jews don't live in Israel; there are just as many people of Italian heritage who live throughout the world than who live in Italy.

Great video/documentary about Jamaican foods, history and culture! Very informative.
wamj68 3 years ago 2
you forgot a very important part of the history> The maroons who fought the British for 100 years and both surrendered into a peace treaty. Look up Accompong Town, St Elizabeth. Ancesters still live there and can still tell the story. You can also visit. Several years ago Prime Minister Tony Blair apologize to the people pf Jamaica for enslaving the people. Good Job for the First time but since this is watched by many include Marcus Garvy, Michael Manley and so many others.
runtoddy 3 years ago
I thought the same thing. I have Maroons from St. James as some of my ancestors. I have also have ancestors that migrated from Cuba to Jamaica (so some of my relatives look Latino). The thing to realize with the documentary is that it focuses mainly on Kingston and the Maroons don't have much presence there.

History has everything to do with why Jamaicans eat what they eat today.

Over all a good report, a good documentary, but it didn't focus too much on food, &it leftthe indian community out completely. It was a good introduction tothe real Jamaica but where was the street food?--Not much was focused on that!
