If you look at just the base pay of an E-7 w/ 8 years (which is extraordinarily fast, at least in the Marines), you are looking at over $40k per year. That is not "barely above the poverty rate." It is nowhere near the poverty level when you add BAS and BAH, which someone with two kids would be receiving.

Arkin never went to war. He isn't a "veteran". he was an enlisted computer geek who was never in harms way in the army for a couple of years and obviously had no problem profiting from the army after he got out.

It is impossible to wrap the military in patriotic idealism and ignore the factors Mr. Arkin mentions if you take a clear look at military recruiting practices. The simple fact of the matter is that the vast majority of those in the military join for economic reasons, not patriotism.

If you look at just the base pay of an E-7 w/ 8 years (which is extraordinarily fast, at least in the Marines), you are looking at over $40k per year. That is not "barely above the poverty rate." It is nowhere near the poverty level when you add BAS and BAH, which someone with two kids would be receiving.

George Patton criticized -- and was himself criticized by -- his fellow generals, yet neither he -- nor they -- were considered "unpatriotic" for being honest. Arkin (in my view) is right on target. That Porter Goss met with Ahmad the morning of 911 in his capacity as Chairman of the House Committee on Intelligence has no bearing whatsoever upon his recent selection by the White House to head the CIA.

I can't understand how an American, William Arkin would bash our troops. I am in the military and we cant help where we get sent off too, its not our decision....People like O'Rielly are good people for standing up for us..maybe not standing for the war because that is the way America is built, on having our own opinion. For those few Americans who hate the military, they are the disgrace to America...I know everyone can agree when I say God Bless our Troops!

I agree with O'Reilly. In fact, I find myself agreeing with him on many Libertarian issues. O'Reilly is a conservative/moderate-libertarian. I am a Liberal/moderate-libertarian. There is nothing wrong with agreeing with him on issues such as this.
The only problem i have with him is that he claims to be Fair and Balanced yet obviously endorses a conservative spin.

how ridiculous! opposing the war has nothing to do with the support of our military. the people's concern with the war needs to be voiced and heard. if the soldiers are upset, then they ought to direct their anger at the administration who put them there in the first place. it is their fault we have been wasting American lives, American dollars and have severely damaged the world's faith in the U.S.
