We get stolen product in all the time and the police recover it, we are allowed to turn away any trade we feel may be a stolen product and we cannot accept two of the same product a the same time for that reason. Yeah Gamestop doesn't do this at all...a trade process is simple. We need your name, number, and an address if your not in the system already. And we use it only for looking stuff up. The address is for just in case we find out the games are stolen or something which rarely happens so thats for the police if need be but we don't do anything with that information but to look you up. IF this does happen it's probably state or this employee was just really stupid. But its certinally not national.

Gamestop has a database of customers in order to access their trade info. fast so they dont have to enter it in every time manually. Its pawn law that they have this information in case a police officer shows up with a pending case requiring them to hand over the product. GameStop does not have access to any sort of criminal database. He was probably kidding and you were too highstrung to notice. Also, you can run a background check on anyone you want at anytime. I have bad news for you as well, your criminal history is public domain. If criminal records were private they would not allow TV cameras in court rooms. You can't be a criminal and hide it, what on Earth makes you think that is ok?

I work at gamestop, and I believe that employee was indeed misinformed. We don't have access ( to my knowledge ) of checking backgrounds. We do, however, treat games like you would if you were pawning something. So we need to take the information ( like name, number, address ) down in order to have you in the system. Yeah Gamestop doesn't do this at all...a trade process is simple. We need your name, number, and an address if your not in the system already. And we use it only for looking stuff up. The address is for just in case we find out the games are stolen or something which rarely happens so thats for the police if need be but we don't do anything with that information but to look you up. IF this does happen it's probably state or this employee was just really stupid. But its certinally not national.

They started doing this cuz They had a huge problem with People stealing Wii motes... yes Wii motes and then going to game stop to sell them (I am a former GS employe) With that said. I do not feel that it makes it ok that they do it without your knowledge. Actually even worse they used to take your license make a photo copy and hand it over to an officer at the end of the day for all the trade ins! with what a list of what yo had sold of course. As for my time with GS. I was just a SGA and I know that the store I worked at stopped that practice. It was just a temp solution and quick way to catch a few punks that came in every day with brand new wii motes...

this information is taken in because a trade at gamestop is treated like a pawn or pawn sale.
depending on the laws of the state the gamestop is in determines which of those 5 must be entered.
gamestop does not process a criminal background check just because you're trading in games.
