He fell somewhere, his compass was in his pocket and hit the ground, so it broke. Wherever he fell, he was exposed to some kind of a naturally occurring mineral liquid pond of some type of chemical that made him pass out. So he dreamed it, then woke up with burns associated with liquid that got on him from a breeze and a temperature change which changed gaseous manifestation of the element into liquid and hit him. Combined with post traumatic flashbacks of something that went terribly wrong.

Have you guys considered that by "cigarette like shape things with the hump in the middle" he meant cigarette ashtrays? If look at his drawing and the cg recreation, it's shaped like an ashtray with a hump in the middle. Maybe he simply couldn't remember the word in that moment so he just called them "things". There's a kind of winter cabin place there now, with secluded log cabins--my family used to go there every winter. It's eerie because outside it's just secluded snow and woods. They have a sleigh ride available and at one point the guy says.. see up there? That's where a man had an encounter with a ufo.
