hey.....i have one of those, great guitar, but how you keep the guitar tuned?
i play like one song, and i have to tune my guitar....for every one song i tune up....maybe its the bigsby bridge? you can enlighten this to me? i would be very appreciated...thanks
@farpanodedo You may have one of the older ones with crappy tuners OR your strings bind in the nut. Try lubricate the nut slightly (scrape off from a pencil works, as do olive oil etc). If that doesn't help, go and get a good brand replacement tuners.
i tried 2 guitars of that models and its all solid body, no cavitiy inside the body. I dont know where you found your guitar but its not made like the low cost gretsch.
@RythmTR It is per definition a solid body, but the mahogany is hollowed out. You won't see this since the maple top cover the routed areas. For Les Paul's they use the terminology "chambered". A true hollow body would something like an ES335, hollowed out solid body is what I am referring to, which is true for this one.
It is a low(er) cost Gretsch made in China. I've heard though that early examples of this model was equipped with really crappy tuners. This one has no such problems.
Såg att mitt svar ang strängbyte inte kom in, repris då. Ja man måste justera gitarren då man byter strängtjocklek. Ev. justera dragstången till önskad böj på halsen (kan man slippa med lite flax), finjustera stränghöjden och sedan en ny intonering. Men detta är ju egentligen enkla grejor.
Hi - From my ear it sounds like your using relatively light strings. If you want a better tone - like Malcolm Young I would recommend the Gibson 12-56's. Remember that your guitar needs a professional set up to calibrate the guitar to handle the extra tension.
oh... i have 10 to 16's and was planning to change to 12 56's. do you think my guitar can handle it? by the way: its a gretsch similar to this one in this video. its a synchromatic
Hrmm.. You better check your ears :-), it IS a set of twelves on the guitar. Comes with 10's original, a new set of 12's, a slight truss rod adjustment and re-doing the intonation makes a noticable difference.
Though it is a bit heavy to play on a set of 12´s.
Hey AnderzP, Absolutely, Great tone and great looking axe ya got there! Now all ya need are some cool shades, and yer ready ta get out there and rock n roll the babes.
Thanks. I've had the opportunity to try out a friends Gretsch Malcolm Young guitar, the tones are pretty much the same (which was the aim when swapping the p/u to a TV Jones Filtertron replica), but the Gretsch MY is much lighter than my Electromatic version.
This was very surprising but doesn't seem to affect tone much.
I don't think a normal Gibson style humbucker will fit without routing a fair share of wood. Check differences in size between a TV Jones p/u and a Gibson p/u. The TV Jones fit without hardly any routing.
Hey dude, i'm about to buy this guitar from music store but i'm afraid of something. how is it playing in the up 17th fret region? is it hard to play? i noticed that the neck becomes a little larger.
I have no idea, because I really can't tell what type of music that is :-). But the guitar got a very nice sound in the "clean to overdrive" region. Excellent "twang", fullness and sometimes resemble a steel string acoustic on steroids.
It is clearly not a metal guitar or a guitar that you use for a heavy overdrive/fuzzy type of sound.
Thanks for posting both of these videos - they were ultimately the deciding factor in whether or not to purchase this same guitar. I bought it a few months ago and absolutely love it. You did a great job and addressed all of my concerns and questions. Thanks again!!
Thank you! It is always nice to know that you can help out :-D. Congratulations to a good purchase, I am sure that you will enjoy the guitar for many years.
Hi Anderz -Sorry to bug you again but I also had a question on your pickup mod ... did you leave the ground wire where it was or relocate it? and ... did you use compression foam under the pickup or not??
Yes I used some compression rubber, not much though, maybe 3-5 millimeters. It is a tight fit height-wise if you, like me, let the top surface of your piece of filler wood be level with the stock p/u mounting surface.
I pretty much left the grounding wire where it is, but to make it possible to mount the pickup I was forced to route the corner in the cavity slightly. Lower right corner with the guitar in front of you looking at the top surface.
I am working on it, in my head at least. I have a few different variants and I'm not sure what to do and what to show. I have an Epiphone G-400 with a Gibson 498T pickup which gives the "Shoot to thrill" sound. I also have an SG Standard Worn Brown which now have an Angus Young Signature p/u. Nice too. And a purchase made a couple of weeks ago, an SG3 (Standard) worn white with stock p/u. My son has an Angus Young Signature SG, stock of course. So there are some possibilities here. We'll see.
Thanks I'll keep looking. I have a Vintage SG - these are usually rated as a similar standard to the G400. I've been thinking of upgrading the PUPS to Gibsons and wondered what the sound was like through my Laney. My TVJ classic plus should be arriving any day now for the conversion for my Electromatic. Hope it sounds as good as this. I am also (longer term) wanting the Gibson SG special worn brown !! - we seem to be on the same wavelength - guitar & tone speaking. All the best. Rob
Hi - thanks I will have a good listen to those. Re the Gretsch - I finally fitted the TVJ PUP. Harder than I expected! My first attempt at changing a pickup - probably chose too nice a guitar. I found the electrics ok but mounting the PUP was a bit of a nightmare. That aside, I am happy with the new sound but it doesn't sound quite the same as yours - certainly on the settings you gave. On your vid is the guitar just switched to bridge pup & amp on the bright setting ? Thanks again. Rob
Yes, bridge p/u only, volume and tone on 10 on the guitar and bright mode on the amp. I usually run with bass on slightly above middle and mid/treble slighly below middle (6,4,4 is a good start).
Sorry if you were having a hard time with mounting the p/u, but I think it was very easy. Cut a block of hardwood, screw across opening and then mounting the p/u on to of that. Can't really see what the problem could have been. Any pictures of the process ? Maybe the guitars differs ?
Hi Again. No worries I'm appreciative of all your help. The ground ? wire was an issue. Mainly in keeping it tidy (also didn't want the mounting ring) I also needed to make the upper ? cavity a little deeper - PUP too close to the strings. Mounting the PUP on a narrow piece of wood and keeping it parallel to the strings was an issue. (I forgot to drill the holes at a slight angle!) If I could do it again I'd be fine !! Could the angle/gap to strings affect the tone much do you think? Cheers Rob
Angle ? No I don't think so. Distance ? Yes, I think so. I tried measuring it and I got the following rough figures. Measuring from string underside to top of metal cover between the pole screws, bass side 5,5 mm and treble side 4,5 mm. The pole screws are on factory setting at bass and treble extremes but turned up closer to strings towards the middle. The distance from underside of strings to top of screws at D and G strings is roughly 2-2,5mm.
Hi - Thanks for your video. Is this an electromatic? If so I have the very same guitar (in black) and the same amp. This is the sound I'm after. No effects on there ? How much did you pay for your new pick ups and are they easy to swap on this model ? Thanks again
Yes it is an Electromatic, no effects whatsoever. I have the LC-15 without reverb, the LC-15R wasn't available when I bought mine.
I payed USD125 plus shipping for the p/u about a year ago (TV Jones Classic plus). The conversion is dead simple, although you need to cut a filler piece of wood and do a slight routing in the cavity to make room for the grounding cable.
If you don't mount the plastic mounting ring the operation is reversible and you won't ruin the guitar.
Forgot to mention; I only swapped the bridge pickup since that's all I use when playing. How easy/difficult it is to change the neck pickup I don't know. It may be more complex.
Hi again - Thanks v. much for the info. Sorry I've only just watched part one and now realise you'd already given most of the info I needed. Mine is also just the LC15. Glad to hear no effects. Just the raw sound of the guitar and valve amp. My search for 'the sound' is over - Birthday approaching - I think I'll be getting a TV Jones ! pup (Although don't seem to be widely available in the UK ?) Thanks again. Rob
Sorry folks, I know I talked too much and played too little. But it was my first try to record something and put on YouTube. I still haven't got around buying a better microphone than the PC-built-in one I used. But anyday soon.
I have no problem with mine staying in tune once tuned. But a few of the strings might need some tweaking to get right. I use a set of 12 gauge strings (what else :-D) and a few bind slightly. It get better with some graphite powder (scraped from a pencil).
Once tuned I can pick it up a week later and it is still perfectly tuned. Good luck with the pickup, it makes a real difference.
Yes, it is a Laney LC-15, without reverb. It is truly a great amp for the price. Nowadays you can get the LC-15R with built in spring reverb, even better. That model was not available when I bought mina 10 years ago.
No idea, I haven't tried, but since you can put on very heavy strings (built like a tank, I use a set of twelves) and the fretboard is of the flatter variety I guess it would work excellent.
