Dropping stuff is er - only half the story. An old video cassette tape is pretty long and with a powerful light tied to one end is let reeling off down the shaft, but when you get to 250ft witness the camera shake! If the light doesn't disappear in the darkness give it some more tape, let folks see the build of the shaft, square or round, brick or concrete lined or just bare rock. Video tape is stronger and longer than music cassette but not so commonly found lying around to hand in cars.
Dropping stuff is kid's stuff, better yet and old music or video cassette with a light tied to it, then you realise the depth, trouble is - camera shake - not even anti-camera shake devices may help!
Dolcoath mine was the deepest in Cornwall and one of the deepest in the world at that time. At the end it was 1000 metres (3000 feet) deep and had over 70 miles of underground levels.
