i used to be very good with 1 v 1 situations, but a while ago i was involved in a collision where i almost lost my eye and now that keeps reoccouring and now in a 1 v 1 situation i always hesitate in diving at the players feet or just slide in at the player, have you got any tips please?
I have a problem when I come out he usually sees me coming and has a shot (usually a lob shot) it's really annoying. I can't do anything about it. Should I wait till he's entering the box till I come out or should I start coming out ASAP. I play at quite a high level but I get no keeper training with my school. If someone could give me a detailed answer about coming out it would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks
that will actually make it easier. If you can get close enough to close down his shooting space, then it's actually better if he tries to dribble around you. By doing this, it creates more space for your body to get down into. If the forward goes directly sideways, then don't go down at all, just move your feet with him and keep the angle closed down.
@stlouisgoalkeeping o thanks babe i will be the best striker alive! thank you for revealing all your goalie secrets!!!!!! NOW I WILL JUMP OVER THE GOALIE!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha, great laugh...don't forget to make sure you bring a high level of skill with you in the moment. It's one thing to know the secret, it's another thing altogether to have the necessary skill to accomplish the task.
@xCaRnRAGEx try to position him in the direction where he dosen't kick or dribble with that foot, and give him a little space but spread your arms out.
okay, no problem. You're getting close. Try and see if you can close down that last 5 feet or so to 3 feet. This will totally eliminate any shooting angle they currently have at around 5 feet. Then they will be forced to try and dribble around. If you can't close it down any further, just make sure that you have both hands down right at your ankles and you are bent at your knees. This will be important. If you don't bend enough, you won't be able to drop down in time.
when im 1on 1 i dont go that low because im one of the shorter keepers in my leauge ( 5:10) so i stay big with a very slight bend in my knees because i feel that i cant afford to give up too much size and i never put my hands that low because i feel i can save with my feet and rather than diving at the feet every time i somtimes wait for a shot and smother it with a diving block from close range. Just my opinion though this is still a great vid :-)
i also noticed that when you were dribbling at him and attempting to round him, he was diving backwards, and opening up more room for you to get around. I have always maintained that the hands should go straight to the ball and be a bit aggressive. I know you should stay on your feet as long as possible, but diving backwards gives the attacker more space to go around. thats just what I have always done, I would like your advice if I am doing it wrong. Love the videos by the way
but does he go slightly backwards "after" I had already pushed the ball? If so, then this is okay, because as the forward, I have already tried to push past him and he needs the extra space to get down to the ball. The problem becomes if he goes down too early or he goes backward when the forward pushes the ball square to him as opposed to trying to push the ball past him. At that point, it is not good to go slightly backward in this moment.
when i come out for a one on one I now know i do it wrong, i run out fast and then slide in sideways with my hands out incase he trys to tap it over me or around the sides, any tips?
you should come out about as fast as the forward is coming in towards you, assuming that he is coming in from outside the box. As you close down the shooting space, you will need to make sure that your feet are stopped and balanced. Keep a low posture like you see in the video and wait for the forward to decide whether he is going to the left or to the right. when he pushes to go by you, you collapse down to take the ball off of his foot like in the last drill in the video
Hey i noticed something, this kid has his hands very close to his legs and their turned with the face of the hand into his calves. Unless im wrong than i suggest you have your hands extended out a little more with the face of your hand turned toward the opponent. that way if the shot is toward your hands there is no need for movement and the save is instantaneous, and if it is shot wide your hands are in better position to make a diving save.. thats what i have always done
I haven't watched the video in quite some time, but you are partially correct. The palm of the hands should face the field as he is closing down the shooting space between him and a forward. As for how close the hands should be to the ankle, we suggest they be less than the width of the ball. forwards are taught that the toughest space for a goalkeeper to defend is the space right next to their feet, so the hands need to be close enough to prevent a ball being passed there.

Unless im wrong than i suggest you have your hands extended out a little more with the face of your hand turned toward the oponent. that way if the shot is toward your hands there is no need for movement and the save is instantaneous, and if it is shot wide your hands are in better position to make a lengthy save.
in a match situation, should I try to work out the strong foot of the attacker and try to position myself slightly off centre to force him on his bad foot if he wants to go round me? I've noticed the keeper in the video always caught you on your left foot...
I used to do that as a defender and found it useful, so I wonder if you can do that as a keeper...
I think it is good to try an be aware of which foot ann opponant prefers, but I would caution against positioning yourself off-center in any way. Just the fact that you are aware of his tendencies should make the difference in the moment, but if he goes away from that tendency, either because he sees you cheating or because he just decides to go with the weaker foot, you will be at a disadvantage.
not really. they require too much energy output for a pregame warmup. Maybe we should make a video regarding the proper way to warm up before a match. Thanks for the idea.
brilliant video st louis goalkeeping!!! really helping my game, i must say this... i love the way you put people in their place who think they know what they are on about lol keep it up and i look forward to more videos from you soon.
no need to slide. Just close down the shooting space, and force the forward to commit to trying to push past you either right or left. Once he does that, than the nearest foot to the ball gets kicked out from underneath the body in the opposite direction of the ball and you collapse down into the space created by getting the inside leg out of the way while driving both hands to the ball at the same time.
i have something that works most of the time in 1v2 but if it doesnt you look very stupid. I start of coming out fast to srace the plyaer with the ball, then when it looks like im about to commit i take a step towards the other player and usually they pass it straight to me. If it doesnt work though it looks like your stepping out of the way of the shot.
really good video. ive been having the trouble of going to ground to early. this helped me alot. definately going to get my coach to do some of these drills with me at training. thanks helped alot
I have a question in my game today i did all this but they scored finally by chiping it high on a break away what can i do to prevent that? thanks for the help.
@jackbrez22 You should time coming out of the goal better. The key is positioning. You were probably stuck in no mans land when they chipped the ball. That's the area between being far back enough to tip the ball over on a chip shot, and being close enough to the shooter to stop the shot they take. You want to have your positioning set before you come out, and surprise and put the pressure on the striker fast whil ekeeping your run under control. Basically just practice this a lot.
Thank You Soooo mUch ¡¡¡¡¡ that was the only problem that i had when i have to be facing to the forward...The way that you teach is awesome, i learnt a lot with your videos .
@stlouisgoalkeeping Do you by any chance have a video, or even just tips, on a breakaway, when they are dribbling, and as you come out, and you're about halfway to him, he shoots it, what do you do? I'm guessing you sit there, and react to the ball, but am I wrong? should you keep running and try to get as close to him as you can by smothering it? But I'm worried that you won't be able to get out there fast enough, and you won't be ready to block it. Please help me with this... Thanks a ton!!!!
there's a reason he's moving that slow..you need to come out under total control and have the ability to stop both of your feet at any moment. If you come racing out of the goal when the forward is dribbling in under control, then it becomes very easy for the forward if he has any quality at all. The general rule is that if the goalkeeper should come out roughly as fast as the forward is dribbling in.
@stlouisgoalkeeping Do you by chance have a video of when you start to come out on a 1v1, but as you are about halfway out to the ball, the player shoots? If not, what is the correct technique? Do you still dive, or do you stay on your feet, and react to the ball???
the best way is to be patient and then when the player comes towards you you suddenly get the ball i think thats the best way correct me if im wrong please
If its 1v1 I usually go out to deal with the guy with the ball, cause I guess if you just stand in your area you are no better than sitting duck. I just wait right before he gets a touch and rush
You're welcome.....I learned a much of these drills. Are you going to make a video about how to handle in breakaways situations? I mean with explanations as well?

hi, im a 14 years old goalkeeper from finland. my prolem is that i dont have enough courage in 1v1 situations since defender accidentally kick me head. what should i do? by the way my technique is not the best one in 1v1.
Shit happens im playing for varsity and shit may happen if u do it right ull be hero if u fcuked up nothing is gonna happen most of th etime 1v1 r becauze of the defense dont worry just do ur joib
Getting scored upon when you rush up to them is better than getting scored upon while you stand idly waiting for the unavoidable goal, cause you at least tried
For me personally it depends on the situation. If they have a tight dribble and I don't see an opening to rush out (I hope that makes sense) I do what they do in the video. But if the forward is knocking the ball ahead and running onto it, or is dribbling loosely I will rush out to smother the ball before they can get to the ball, or right as they shoot.
I wouldn't to be honest. Stay on your feet - a few feet off your line and just try to give him as little aim to look at. The person with the ball is most likely to pass it then - then you can make the save.
I think in that situation you do have to come off of your line to close down the angle of the shooter...don't rush out, but come out under control like you see in the video...the difference is that you need to try and overplay the angle on the side of the secong forward just a bit....trying to force the forward with the ball into dribbling past you on the far side. The idea here is cut down the passing angle, and force them to try to dribble you to the outside.
depends if the striker shoots high jump high. or low. if u move out of ur position on ur inner post hes only gona have enough space to shoot on ur outside,
can you make a video about positiong, im good in all of the other parts im just bad at positioining, i kno that when u start a match b4 u go in the goal u mark the floor in the middle of goal soo u kno where the middle is. but say ur on the side and out the lil box?
I had a 1v1 Situation on my last game when i dove at the ball and it slip out of my fingers and he went around me. what is a good thing to do in this type of situation? run after him and jump?
once the ball has escaped your hands, that is about the only thing you can do. Let me ask you a question - when your hands initially made contact with the ball, did you hold it down against the ground, or where you holding the ball with two hands slightly off the ground? You may not remember, but if you do, this will be very important to the moment.
juz a question................. if u were in a 1 on 1 situation against the striker wif the ball bouncing at yr chest level, wat is da best thing to do
Hi i am trying out to be a goalkeeper for my school, this is were i struggle and in diving when its a one on one i like freeze i like get scared but im kinda good at high shots but horrible at low ones any tips please reply?
To be honest, it's the way you go in that won't get you hurt. I'm a first-time goalkeeper but I've noticed if you dive at their feet with your chest then it hurts less when you do it with your head.
hey i play indoor and outdoor, im a goalkeeper. let me try help u tkach, wen ever its a 1v1 situation i tend to slide my body into his legs making sure i get the ball wid my hands, and knocking hte player to the ground widout my face anywhere near his legs. and for other times players try to go around a keeper they find it easier to shoot wid a clear goal, i tend to dive and push the ball out of there legs and hoping for my defenders to do the rest or i slide my feet to the ball removing thebal
we will be making a more instructional video on this particular skill set in the upcoming months. This particular video was made to show the drills that you can do to work on 1v1 situations, but it doesn't explain what you should be doing or why. We will make a video dealing with that.
can you make a video about positiong, im good in all of the other parts im just bad at positioining, i kno that when u start a match b4 u go in the goal u mark the floor in the middle of goal soo u kno where the middle is. but say ur on the side and out the lil box?
im a goalkeeper for my soccer team and im very short. so do you have any tips for stopping high shots? And i get very afraid whenever i rush up that the person will kick me, do you have any tips?
first of all, before we get into helping you...how old are you? the reason I ask, is because depending on your age, it will depend on the advice I give you.
Hi again, in this training are you teaching him to stay low until the person makes a move to the side and creates an opportunity to smother the ball or just dribbles into you? Thanks.
yes, we are teaching him to stay low until the person makes a move to the side and creates an opportunity to smother the ball. A couple of ideas that must be adhered to are 1) patience -- the goalkeeper must really be patient in this moment and not go down to his side early. He msut keep his balance even and just wait until the forward touches to the left or right. 2) make sure that you stop your feet about 3-4 yards away from the forward so you have enough time and room to get down.
I am a goalkeeper, I only come out for the ball if the player is struggling with controling the ball but i would stay at the goal post if he is controling well and about to shoot at any time is this right or wrong???
it depends on the angle that the player is coming in at, but do keep in mind.....the closer a player gets to your goal....the larger the goal gets for him to shoot at if you are not coming off of your line. If you do come off of your line as the player is dribbling in towards you....the smaller your goal gets for him. this is what you want to try and accomplish...to make the goal as small as possible for the shooter.
Wow dude..you're pretty tall...I'm 16 and im barely 5'7... If quickness is ur problem and u just experienced a growth "spurth" then it is natural to be "slow" or "clumsy". It is the fact that you are not "used" to your body yet. Do alot of diving drills, it has helped my fellow tall keepers. :)
this here is my weakness! when ever 1v1 happen in a game i would come out maybe 2 steps and return to my line and take 1 step and return to my line again, my coach tells me to mirror the person and it works but for some reason i just cant cut the "dancing" in the 6 yard box. but i see now how its suppose to be done. let's hope i get better.
one of the biggest keys is to be patient in the moment...we will be making a more detailed video of this technique very soon where we will talk about all of the little issues that you have to face in this moment. The new video will give you much more information than is in the current one.
How do you know when to come out on through balls b/c sometimes I have defenders yelling at me on loose balls outside of the box or at top of 18? Also, my keeper coach on 1v1s wants me to constantly tackle/slide at forward instead of standing up like I was originally taught by my old keeper coach. Is that wrong? Finally, my wrist can really hurt for about a week if a save a really hard shot. How can I strengthen my wrists? Thank u.
never mind I downloaded this by using youtube downloader (someone recommanded me to use this to download the video. Anyway, thank you for uploading this great video (I hope you keep uploading useful goalkeeping lesson video like this)
Your videos are extremely helpful. What about in the situation that the forward isn't trying to dribble past the goalie but begins to wind up for a shot (you know it's for sure going to be a shot) 5-6 yards from the goalie while the goalie is running in towards the forward? Should the goalie continue to run in and dive at it to block the shot (and cutting down the angle even more) or just stop where he is and stand his ground?
that's an excellant question....when you're in that situation and you see the forward beginning to slow down to prepare his balance for the shot and you see his shoulders begin to rise and you feel he's about to shoot....STOP YOUR FEET immediately. and get set...keep your head forward so the weight of your body is foward and on the toes of your feet and prepare to react to the shot and drive your hands to the ball. Only dive at the feet if you think you can cover the distance in time.
yes, every goalkeeper will generally have a side that is less natural than the other. The easiest way to train this is just to work 2 times as much on the less natural side. Over time, as you develop the muscle memory for the weaker side, you will become more comfortable with it and it should begin to even out.
I played for our high school varsity soccer team as a goalie. im around 5 9 and weigh 205 during soccer season. Do you believe im too short and heavy to play goalie in a higher level.??
first of all, how old are you? 5'9" is on the shorter end (same height as me), but you still may grow some and even if you don't, you can still be a top level goalkeeper, you just have to work really hard at some specific issues. As for the weight, it needs to come down quite a bit for your current height. It needs to be down to 160 or so to play at the higher levels.
im 18 already and havent grown a inch for like over a year. I know im on the heavy side but i do alot of lifting weights. i bench 255 and squat 560 10 reps. so should i cut out the weights to drop weight
yeah, I would cut out the weights to the upper part of the body at least. It's good to be strong up top, but the problem is that when you add mass, that's just more weight your legs have to push through the air when you dive and take crosses. I would try to lean it out and drop the heavy weight work. If you want to do stuff for the lower half, do jumping excercises with jump boxes and other plyo work. Top half do pushups on the balls and maybe 20lb curls..thosetype of things.
We are developing a program where goalkeepers from outside the country or from other parts of the U.S. can stay with the families of the goalkeepers who are already in our program. We hope to have this in place by late speing of this year. Please check back with us and there are many goalkeepers like you who wish to come in and we would like to help everyone who has an interest.
Do you all host any elite level overnight summer camps?

right...okay, we have started our international program, where goalkeepers from outside St. Louis can come in for a couple of weeks and work with us. Check our website for more info on how that works and the costs. You would stay with a local family who already has a goalkeeper currently in our program. Also, look into Star Goalkeeping Academy by Dan Gaspar and see if his camp is coming anywhere near your area. His is by far the best of the "traveling" summer camps.
You're more than welcome to visit our program anytime.....and yes, you must continue to train hard all of the time. that's the only way to get better.
this wasn't part of his training session. It was actually after his session and it was filmed because we were getting a lot of request for drills to do dealing with the 1v1 issue. Trust me, this isn't a training session for anyone in our program.
I love your videos! but i got a question, Im a little hesitant when it comes to shutting down the 1v1, like I dont know the right time to come out and get the ball, when do think is the right time to leave your line and attack the ball?
PS, your goalkick video helped me a lot, I always had my foot too close to the ball, now im getting 35+ yards on my kicks when i used to kick it only 20-25 yards.
the right time to leave your line is when the forward has cleared the last defender and is freely into the space between you and that defender. Then you must come out at the same speed as the forward is coming in. Use the body position and technique from this video when you come out. Make sure you come out under control and in balance. Stop your feet 3-4 yards away from the forward, stay low, and LET THE FORWARD MAKE THE FIRST MOVE LEFT OR RIGHT.
Hi i was wondering if i could get some ideas for offseason drills to improve footwork, hands, winning air balls (crosses, etc.) and just all around good drills for keepers. hands and air balls are the main things. i dont have partner to work with so i was wondering what drills i could do by myself? thanks.
there's a ton you can do really. Everything from diving to stationary balls on the floor, to practicing taking crosses without a ball by using your imagination. All of the footwork you see in the videos can be done solo. If you can find a wall to kick balls off of, you can work catching, forward dives, and throwing. You can work quick, collapse diving with a ball on the ground 2 yards from you. You just have to look at each drill you see and say, "how can I do that without a ball moving?"
if the striker is coming in fast wait until he has JUST touched the ball (so that he is furthest away from it), if you are coming out far remember that when you're getting on the ground for the tackle to keep your arms up incase of a lob. Your legs should be spread out so that one is bent behind you and the other stretched out to an almost locked length. This technique works for me, and I've seen my favorite Goalies using it. Artur Boruc used it during the Euro's against Austria all the time.
Not only that, also be aware of his positioning, he is already about halfway out so that he can get to the striker faster, if they are coming in at a full sprint it will be difficult for them to lob you. Btw THanks Stlouisgoalkeeping, these videos are very helpful.
I like Boruc very much, I think he is very good. The one area of technique is disagree with his style is his technique on this moment. I've watched him do it many times and as you can see, we teach a very different style. That being said, Boruc is very effective with his style and it works for him more often than not. My one biggest concern is that he cannot control the ball because he leads with his feet as opposed to his hands, where he can use his hands to pin the ball to the floor.
Thank's for answering. Yea I agree with what you're saying, but I think that your technique is more effective when the striker kicks the ball a little too far away from himself, then it is better to get the ball under control in your hands. But I believe that if you are positive that the striker is about to shoot you should use the "boruc technique" just to block the shot, cause it would be quite difficult to do that with your hand's. They could chip it and such.
Also, I've been elected as my team captain, even though I'm a goalie. Any advice that you could give me? with organizing my defence or just good leadership?
the best advice I can give with being the captain is that you MUST lead by example...you must give all of your effort all of the time, showing people what the effort needs to be...encouraging people to strive for perfection every time, but being positive when you do this. A positive attitude is very important and if you can constantly be motivating players to do better and to believe in themselves, you should be a successful captain.
thank you but i mean when i stay on the goalline ... then i m very nervous. and my kondition isnt very good. thanks a lot. but i don t understand all what u say sry
Lets say a failed offside trap leads to a breakaway/1v1 and the striker has possession of the ball alone about 30yards out...is it best to time your forward approach based on his speed/advancement towards the goal?...if this is the case we must take into account we may run out of 18yard box and the ability to challenge with our hands...SO....
my question is:
should we time our approach based on the shooters speed or based on how much room we have left in the 18yd box? both?
fantastic question!! from a distance like 30yards, I think it is best to hold your approach until you can meet him somewhere around 15 yards out. Normally, you should try to match speeds with the forward when you come out, but because he's so far away to start, you have to be carefull when you start forward. Otherwise, you give up a lot of space behind you and the easiest option will be the chip over the head. I don't recommend trying to address this type of situation outside the box.
Yeah I'm from Ontario, Canada. I've wanted to train with you but It's kinda too far for me. Hey where are this kid and the kid in the other video playing now?
the kid is finishing his senior year in high school this upcoming year. After that, he's scheduled to go to Saint Louis University (division 1 - top 10) on a full scholarship. After his first year, he will be taking it year by year as to when and where he goes.
B)so its much better to dive like this vid tells u too then to dive wer the ball is on ur stomach, ur right, its hard to talk 2 u about positioning on the comp then on the field, wer do u live and whats the tym, im in sydney australia and its 11:51pm right now
QA)oh thnk u, all the best, but when u told me to be patient and to let him to take the first move, what if he is right up close to me and the gap wer the ball is 1 feet away frm me
B)what if in a 1v1, i dive infront of him, but the ball is wer my stomach, so im closing the angles, im covering the left and im covering the right, and he sees that he has no wer to shoot??
then just choose a side and collapse down to the ground, but still extend those arms out so your hands get to the ball early.
if the ball is where your stomach is because you're collapsing down to the ground, that's one thing. But if you're diving (diving is different than collapsing down) you want to make sure you're leading with your hands and arms and this is taking the ball more towards your head (because the body follows the hands and arms) than your stomach. what you're describing -
may not always be wrong, either, though. It just depends on the situation and it's tough to go through each situation without actually being on the training field with you and myself working together in person.
so i when the forwad is comming, i spread infront of the ball, and my right hand and left hand are straight like traintracks, and my face is behiind my arms??
yes, this is correct. Now keep in mind, that when the forward is coming and you're about 3-4 yards away..STOP AND SET YOUR FEET! make them still and get low......be patient and LET THE FORWARD MAKE THE FIRST MOVE to the right or to the left. As soon as he touches the ball right or left, then you go down and extend those arms to the ball....and pin the ball to the floor. DO NOT PICK IT UP OFF THE GROUND.
so what u mean is that my hands should be infront of the ball, so when i spread infront of the ball, my head is a foot away frm the strikers leg, practically speaking, if i dive to the right, my hands should be on the ball and my hed is where my shoulders are????
when you say "in front of the ball" do you mean between your face and the ball? If so, this is correct. Your top hand should be on top of the ball holding the ball to the ground and the lower hand should be behind the ball supporting in case the ball is struck with the opponant's foot. If you extend your arms at length, you'll probably have about 2-3 feet between your head and the ball. this is more than enough room for safety.
the wrong thing about this vid is that when the guy divs on the ball, the ball should be just infront of his stomach, not in his face, i tried this n got a broken jaw twice, i tried the stomach technique and it works beautiful
chances are, you got kicked iN the face because your head wasn't DOWN behind the ball. If you're head is higher than the ball level, you're asking for and injury. If your head is down behind the ball and the arms are extended out away from the head, meaning the ball is at least a foot away from your face, you'll be safe. The only goalkeeper I've ever seen in 30 years get injured using this technique was Petr Cech and that's because the forward intended to injure him.
remeber, it's about perfect technique and all the LITTLE details that go into it. Perfect technique not only saves goals, it prevents injury as well.
what happens when you are coming out. and a shot is fired, compared to taking it. i have trouble saving those

Thanks

what do you do if the striker doesn't dribble straight into you like a fucking noob?
xCaRnRAGEx 11 months ago
@xCaRnRAGEx
that will actually make it easier. If you can get close enough to close down his shooting space, then it's actually better if he tries to dribble around you. By doing this, it creates more space for your body to get down into. If the forward goes directly sideways, then don't go down at all, just move your feet with him and keep the angle closed down.

@xCaRnRAGEx try to position him in the direction where he dosen't kick or dribble with that foot, and give him a little space but spread your arms out.
Jeubelani 6 months ago
@bladingforever
okay, no problem. If you don't bend enough, you won't be able to drop down in time.

i do tiger tiger tiger swan and it works alot. but you have yo come out strong
ovechkin250 1 year ago
when im 1on 1 i dont go that low because im one of the shorter keepers in my leauge ( 5:10) so i stay big with a very slight bend in my knees because i feel that i cant afford to give up too much size and i never put my hands that low because i feel i can save with my feet and rather than diving at the feet every time i somtimes wait for a shot and smother it with a diving block from close range. Just my opinion though this is still a great vid :-)
gerrygadrumsee 1 year ago
i also noticed that when you were dribbling at him and attempting to round him, he was diving backwards, and opening up more room for you to get around. I have always maintained that the hands should go straight to the ball and be a bit aggressive. I know you should stay on your feet as long as possible, but diving backwards gives the attacker more space to go around. thats just what I have always done, I would like your advice if I am doing it wrong. Love the videos by the way
jaredwatkin 1 year ago
@jaredwatkin
but does he go slightly backwards "after" I had already pushed the ball? If so, then this is okay, because as the forward, I have already tried to push past him and he needs the extra space to get down to the ball. The problem becomes if he goes down too early or he goes backward when the forward pushes the ball square to him as opposed to trying to push the ball past him. At that point, it is not good to go slightly backward in this moment.

when i come out for a one on one I now know i do it wrong, i run out fast and then slide in sideways with my hands out incase he trys to tap it over me or around the sides, any tips?
garrysmodguy12 1 year ago
@garrysmodguy12
you should come out about as fast as the forward is coming in towards you, assuming that he is coming in from outside the box. As you close down the shooting space, you will need to make sure that your feet are stopped and balanced. Keep a low posture like you see in the video and wait for the forward to decide whether he is going to the left or to the right. when he pushes to go by you, you collapse down to take the ball off of his foot like in the last drill in the video
stlouisgoalkeeping 1 year ago
@stlouisgoalkeeping ok, thanks alot, i'll give it a try

Hey i noticed something, this kid has his hands very close to his legs and their turned with the face of the hand into his calves. Unless im wrong than i suggest you have your hands extended out a little more with the face of your hand turned toward the opponent. that way if the shot is toward your hands there is no need for movement and the save is instantaneous, and if it is shot wide your hands are in better position to make a diving save.. thats what i have always done
xTyrRanT 1 year ago
@xTyrRanT
I haven't watched the video in quite some time, but you are partially correct. The palm of the hands should face the field as he is closing down the shooting space between him and a forward. As for how close the hands should be to the ankle, we suggest they be less than the width of the ball. forwards are taught that the toughest space for a goalkeeper to defend is the space right next to their feet, so the hands need to be close enough to prevent a ball being passed there.
stlouisgoalkeeping 1 year ago

Great vid!
in a match situation, should I try to work out the strong foot of the attacker and try to position myself slightly off centre to force him on his bad foot if he wants to go round me? I've noticed the keeper in the video always caught you on your left foot...
I used to do that as a defender and found it useful, so I wonder if you can do that as a keeper...
ydesdev 1 year ago
@ydesdev

On break aways I try to go for a semi slide tackle slide in with one foot but keep my hands free in case he trys to kick it.
theultramegaman 1 year ago
@theultramegaman
no need to slide.

I have a question in my game today i did all this but they scored finally by chiping it high on a break away what can i do to prevent that? thanks for the help.
jackbrez22 1 year ago
@jackbrez22 You should time coming out of the goal better. The key is positioning. You were probably stuck in no mans land when they chipped the ball. That's the area between being far back enough to tip the ball over on a chip shot, and being close enough to the shooter to stop the shot they take. You want to have your positioning set before you come out, and surprise and put the pressure on the striker fast whil ekeeping your run under control. Basically just practice this a lot.

Thanks a ton!!!!

this guy is moving too slow ... but at least he tries
Savageboy93 2 years ago
there's a reason he's moving that slow..you need to come out under total control and have the ability to stop both of your feet at any moment. If you come racing out of the goal when the forward is dribbling in under control, then it becomes very easy for the forward if he has any quality at all. The general rule is that if the goalkeeper should come out roughly as fast as the forward is dribbling in.

coming off the line to smother the ball is spontaneous for me. Is that a good thing?
(I usually end up with the ball)
theman0818 2 years ago
For me personally it depends on the situation. If they have a tight dribble and I don't see an opening to rush out (I hope that makes sense) I do what they do in the video. But if the forward is knocking the ball ahead and running onto it, or is dribbling loosely I will rush out to smother the ball before they can get to the ball, or right as they shoot.

jigo53 2 years ago
I wouldn't to be honest. Stay on your feet - a few feet off your line and just try to give him as little aim to look at. The person with the ball is most likely to pass it then - then you can make the save.
Mnchsterr 2 years ago
I think in that situation you do have to come off of your line to close down the angle of the shooter...don't rush out, but come out under control like you see in the video...the difference is that you need to try and overplay the angle on the side of the secong forward just a bit....trying to force the forward with the ball into dribbling past you on the far side. The idea here is cut down the passing angle, and force them to try to dribble you to the outside.

once the ball has escaped your hands, that is about the only thing you can do. Let me ask you a question - when your hands initially made contact with the ball, did you hold it down against the ground, or where you holding the ball with two hands slightly off the ground? You may not remember, but if you do, this will be very important to the moment.

Hi again, in this training are you teaching him to stay low until the person makes a move to the side and creates an opportunity to smother the ball or just dribbles into you? Thanks.
conm128 2 years ago
yes, we are teaching him to stay low until the person makes a move to the side and creates an opportunity to smother the ball.

I am a goalkeeper, I only come out for the ball if the player is struggling with controling the ball but i would stay at the goal post if he is controling well and about to shoot at any time is this right or wrong???
lamemohan 2 years ago
it depends on the angle that the player is coming in at, but do keep in mind.....the closer a player gets to your goal....the larger the goal gets for him to shoot at if you are not coming off of your line. If you do come off of your line as the player is dribbling in towards you....the smaller your goal gets for him. this is what you want to try and accomplish...to make the goal as small as possible for the shooter.

Is that wrong? stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
Your videos are extremely helpful. What about in the situation that the forward isn't trying to dribble past the goalie but begins to wind up for a shot (you know it's for sure going to be a shot) 5-6 yards from the goalie while the goalie is running in towards the forward? Should the goalie continue to run in and dive at it to block the shot (and cutting down the angle even more) or just stop where he is and stand his ground?
raiderninerfan 3 years ago
that's an excellant question....when you're in that situation and you see the forward beginning to slow down to prepare his balance for the shot and you see his shoulders begin to rise and you feel he's about to shoot....STOP YOUR FEET immediately. and get set...keep your head forward so the weight of your body is foward and on the toes of your feet and prepare to react to the shot and drive your hands to the ball. Only dive at the feet if you think you can cover the distance in time.
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
i think is much harder to jump left than right, how can i train this?
willymillypilly 3 years ago
yes, every goalkeeper will generally have a side that is less natural than the other.

MrFifa 3 years ago
first of all, how old are you? 5'9" is on the shorter end (same height as me), but you still may grow some and even if you don't, you can still be a top level goalkeeper, you just have to work really hard at some specific issues. As for the weight, it needs to come down quite a bit for your current height. It needs to be down to 160 or so to play at the higher levels.

im 18 already and havent grown a inch for like over a year. I know im on the heavy side but i do alot of lifting weights. i bench 255 and squat 560 10 reps. so should i cut out the weights to drop weight
MrFifa 3 years ago
yeah, I would cut out the weights to the upper part of the body at least. Top half do pushups on the balls and maybe 20lb curls..thosetype of things.

right...okay, we have started our international program, where goalkeepers from outside St. Louis can come in for a couple of weeks and work with us. Check our website for more info on how that works and the costs. You would stay with a local family who already has a goalkeeper currently in our program. I love your videos! but i got a question, Im a little hesitant when it comes to shutting down the 1v1, like I dont know the right time to come out and get the ball, when do think is the right time to leave your line and attack the ball?
PS, your goalkick video helped me a lot, I always had my foot too close to the ball, now im getting 35+ yards on my kicks when i used to kick it only 20-25 yards.
ckpaintballer 3 years ago
the right time to leave your line is when the forward has cleared the last defender and is freely into the space between you and that defender.

Hi i was wondering if i could get some ideas for offseason drills to improve footwork, hands, winning air balls (crosses, etc.) and just all around good drills for keepers. hands and air balls are the main things. i dont have partner to work with so i was wondering what drills i could do by myself? thanks.
ChSFreShMEnKeePA 3 years ago
there's a ton you can do really.

MarkusDorkus 3 years ago

Thanks, Marek

the best advice I can give with being the captain is that you MUST lead by example...you must give all of your effort all of the time, showing people what the effort needs to be...encouraging people to strive for perfection every time, but being positive when you do this. A positive attitude is very important and if you can constantly be motivating players to do better and to believe in themselves, you should be a successful captain.

Hello again... :)
Lets say a failed offside trap leads to a breakaway/1v1 and the striker has possession of the ball alone about 30yards out...is it best to time your forward approach based on his speed/advancement towards the goal?...if this is the case we must take into account we may run out of 18yard box and the ability to challenge with our hands...SO....
my question is:
should we time our approach based on the shooters speed or based on how much room we have left in the 18yd box? both?
davethesave 3 years ago
fantastic question!! from a distance like 30yards, I think it is best to hold your approach until you can meet him somewhere around 15 yards out.

KyleBissonnette23 3 years ago
the kid is finishing his senior year in high school this upcoming year. After that, he's scheduled to go to Saint Louis University (division 1 - top 10) on a full scholarship. After his first year, he will be taking it year by year as to when and where he goes.

oh thnks so much for everything, and about the tips on goallkicks, ive tried it alot and my kicks r still not that good
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
QA)thnk u very much
B)so its much better to dive like this vid tells u too then to dive wer the ball is on ur stomach, ur right, its hard to talk 2 u about positioning on the comp then on the field, wer do u live and whats the tym, im in sydney australia and its 11:51pm right now
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
i'm in st. louis, missouri in the U.S. and it's about 9 in the morning.
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
QA)oh thnk u, all the best, but when u told me to be patient and to let him to take the first move, what if he is right up close to me and the gap wer the ball is 1 feet away frm me
B)what if in a 1v1, i dive infront of him, but the ball is wer my stomach, so im closing the angles, im covering the left and im covering the right, and he sees that he has no wer to shoot??
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
then just choose a side and collapse down to the ground, but still extend those arms out so your hands get to the ball early.
if the ball is where your stomach is because you're collapsing down to the ground, that's one thing. But if you're diving (diving is different than collapsing down) you want to make sure you're leading with your hands and arms and this is taking the ball more towards your head (because the body follows the hands and arms) than your stomach. what you're describing -
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
may not always be wrong, either, though. It just depends on the situation and it's tough to go through each situation without actually being on the training field with you and myself working together in person.
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
so i when the forwad is comming, i spread infront of the ball, and my right hand and left hand are straight like traintracks, and my face is behiind my arms??
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
yes, this is correct. DO NOT PICK IT UP OFF THE GROUND.
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
so what u mean is that my hands should be infront of the ball, so when i spread infront of the ball, my head is a foot away frm the strikers leg, practically speaking, if i dive to the right, my hands should be on the ball and my hed is where my shoulders are????
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
when you say "in front of the ball" do you mean between your face and the ball? If so, this is correct. Your top hand should be on top of the ball holding the ball to the ground and the lower hand should be behind the ball supporting in case the ball is struck with the opponant's foot. If you extend your arms at length, you'll probably have about 2-3 feet between your head and the ball. this is more than enough room for safety.
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
when i sed my right and left arms are straight i meant infront of the ball.
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
the wrong thing about this vid is that when the guy divs on the ball, the ball should be just infront of his stomach, not in his face, i tried this n got a broken jaw twice, i tried the stomach technique and it works beautiful
SANCHEZisTheGREATEST 3 years ago
chances are, you got kicked iN the face because your head wasn't DOWN behind the ball. If you're head is higher than the ball level, you're asking for and injury. If your head is down behind the ball and the arms are extended out away from the head, meaning the ball is at least a foot away from your face, you'll be safe. The only goalkeeper I've ever seen in 30 years get injured using this technique was Petr Cech and that's because the forward intended to injure him.
stlouisgoalkeeping 3 years ago
remeber, it's about perfect technique and all the LITTLE details that go into it. Perfect technique not only saves goals, it prevents injury as well.

hey (:
I have a litle prob at 1on1 :
if a attacker comes far from the box there is no from my team , its just me and him.
Lets say his about 10-15 meters outside the box,
should I run out and try to get the ball with my feet or wait until he gets closer and then I can dive and take the ball.
Often when I try to dive for the ball, the attacker just shoots and sometime its a goal.
But it still feels safer to back and dive for the ball.
What should I do?
Thanks.

p.s
for example : on a corner ( my team kicks)
then they get the ball and make a long pass to a forward ( im still outside the box)
