Why should it be "huge". This aria is lyrical; it is supposed to be sung with a round voice and schmaltz, exactly like Frick is doing it. And believe me schmaltz is diificult for true dark bass!
There are numerous descriptions of him by people who knew him during his lifetime. They emphasized that while he was unattractive physically (short, pockmarked, bulging eyes), he still had a magnetism that brought many lovely females his way :)
@vstasov Haha I see=) Well I guess the package doesn't always match the content. But maybe it does in this case? I think it's much more poetic if he looked like that but had a mind so unbelievably beautiful...
Genius is radiantly beautiful enough - who cares about looks? There are some wonderful portraits of Mozart made during his lifetime where the genius literally pours forth from his eyes. Humor, warmth and wit, too. He was known for his wicked tongue...:)

Nice voice but he keeps attacking notes from below, swooping upward, as an "emphasis". Well, if you emphasize everything, it's as if you emphasize nothing.
Thank you for posting the two video clips from "The life and loves of Mozart". I saw this movie when I was a little girl and I was so impressed by it. It is good that the movie is available on DVD nowadays.
@Yitzhakhaza What do you mean by 'schmaltz'? I don't speak Yiddish. Are you talking about Mozart or Zero Mostel..? Sarastro or Tevye the Milkman?

Remarkable.. not a huge voice, but he's a real bass and incredibly musical. Thanks for posting.

And this fantastic lowness! In our days real profondos are very rare. Salminen, maybe... nad Halfvarson, but no other.

We always were very rare. It's not a recent development. :)
But there are a lot of excellent profondos today beside the ones you mentioned.
