  • What about the pros that say don't waste your money on a light meter because your camera has one built in?

  • simple and very informative :D thnx

  • Why is he using the dome attachment outdoor? Isn't that for flash only? The other attachment is for incident reading, right?

  • Great video as ever.......but Erica really needs to look a bit more interested ! lol :)

  • Great explanation... but god did she look bored !

  • Your vids are among the best I have seen here on youtube. Thanks to you and Adorama for making these possible.

  • what if i want to add some depth in my studio shots, how to meter the light, setting up light power, and etc

  • I could look at Erika all day. =o Absolutely beautiful.

On topic: What tripod is Mark using?

  • She look bored

  • I totally enjoyed your tutorial. Easy to follow and great explanation. Learn more from watching your tutorials than reading books on photography.

  • Great tutorial, clear and concise. Excellent explanation.

Looking forward to more of your tutorials.

  • Nikon D90...can only go to ISO 200...LOL...Dude don't talk about the features of a camera when you don't know anything about. Other than that...cool tutorial.

  • @Maestr0ZA

Actually he's right. Most modern Nikons have a lower ISO setting of 200. They can obviously be set a lot higher than this, but if you want to set lower than 200 you have to use 'LO' feature. Don't know exactly how 'LO' works but you are setting ISO lower than the base setting of sensor in this case.

  • Ordered my Sekonic 358 and pocket wizard mini set-up from Adorama this week. Thanks for the very useful info.

  • As someone who also makes videos for users of DSLRs, I want to applaud you greatly as these are superbly professional and very well presented. Mine tend to be aimed more at newcomers to DSLRs but I love the way you guys do it and aspire to be as good. Thanks guys.

    Rob

  • All your videos r just perfect, am student and this helps me a lotin my studies man!!!Thanks!

  • I've been watching your videos, i'm new to photography but your videos are GREAT help, thank you very much.

  • Your videos are fantastic.

  • you knw if your model wasnt so damn hot id listen to what you have to say better.

  • Buying a light mter almost seems like a tool that isnt really needed. Its nice to get the shutter speed inputting iso and apeture, but you could get the same results taking a couple test shots to find the proper shutter speed and not spending money on a light meter? if someone doesnt agree with me please take the time to tell me why.

  • im really confused.... i want to shoot with my flash gun to expose my model but i wanna do it outdoors. so how do i figure out what to set my flash gun and camer to when i wanna expose for the background like the sky and my model as well?

  • Another great Tutorial, Gorgeous Model also

  • Another great Tutorial, Gorgeous Model also

  • Great video.....and I really like Erika/ She is good on camera. She looks into the camera and really looks at home. I hope she's a successful model or actress by now.

  • What if I move the camera away from the subject after taking the reading? Does correct exposure not affect distance from the camera to the subject? I'm using Cactus V4 triggering. can I fire it up with Sekonic?

  • to modeseglaren: you need to buy the optional Sekonic RT-32 Radio Transmitter Module and you can wirelessly trigger any PocketWizard-enabled flash system within a 100' range. Its about USD50 to 90

to Mark: Thank you for all the videos. A question about metering for the separation light in Ep27, Ep23 and Ep11. Where to point the lumisphere when the separation light illuminates the backdrop, and in another case, when the separation light illuminates the subject as a "halo" or fringe light?

  • I have bought a Sekonic L-358, but I dont see any flash mode withe the T (Radio transmitter). Do I need to buy anything seperate to get this to work on my Flas meter? And what do I need in that case?

  • Prestarte is very difficult attention with the beautiful model that you have.

  • I just bought an L 358 with the Pocket Wizard module, but can't get it to fire the flash, any hints?

  • Past few videos were a real help, so easy to understand!

  • Great work, Mark! Best explanations I ever heard! Greatings from Kiev, Ukraine!

  • Love your videos Mark ! Thank you very much.

  • What is the difference in using your camera's metering system versus a physical light meter? Don't they both essentially do the same thing and give you the same values for shutter speed and aperture?

  • Comment removed

  • @blueeyevisualize The camera´s meter works reflective while the handheld is incident. You only get accurate results by using an incident meter. See the other episodes part 2 and 1 for this topic or simply try to measure with your camera an object with a black or white background. .

  • You should show how to use the wire because you have fans that don't have wireless.

  • another great tut....Thank you

  • Excellent tut ! Thank you

  • Hi Mark can you please make a video or talk about how to choose a memory card.

  • @ClankyRochet Sandisk

  • mark you are doing a very good job

  • When can we expect to see the next episodes pertaining to advanced flash metering?

    Thanks....

  • Mark let Adorama know I've been buying frequently from them and using their photo processing services as a result of their sponsorship. It seems like they're investing more gear to make these videos better which is a good thing.

My request for a future tutorial: low light indoor sports photography w/o a flash. I've been photographing a lot of boxing/kickboxing/MMA recently, and it has to be the most challenging shoots I've ever done. Any tips for this would be awesome: settings, lenses, etc.

  • Arica is nice!!

  • Hi Mark. As always Mark each and every video teaches me something new. Keep up the good work. Thanks

  • goos video mark! and erica is super hot!

  • thumbs if you would like a good explanation on how to read and work a histogram.

  • @flowtime07 I would

  • @flowtime07 : Yeh good call. I actually emailed him couple of times to do a video on histograms

  • @flowtime07 Great suggestion. We'll be doing an episode about understanding the histogram soon. :)

  • @snapfactory When you say "Take a reading" what is this?

  • m not sure bout u guys but Erica was beautiful.... lol... as always very informative Mark...

  • AS always Mark, nice job with the video. One minor improvement next time you discuss the Sekonic meter is to tell people that the 4th option (wireless pocketwizard) does not show up on the display unless you have installed the transmitter...

    Keep up the fantastic work!

  • The D90 can go to ISO 100 in its Low .3 .7 and 1.0 setting

  • @juniortrooperfuture it's "artificial' sensitivity, and really - does'nt do anything good in terms of noise etc...

  • Very good Mark i real like your videos

  • Thanks Mark! Greetings from Saudi Arabia :)

  • Call me stupid, but I have learned more in the last 12 minutes about a lightmeter then I have before ... Thank you Mark for sharing all this knowledge with us

  • great tutorial mark..! thanks..

  • @ErnieCosmo its an incerdential meter your measuring the light falling onto something not reflecting off like your cameras meter

  • thank you Mark;, by the way Erika has beautiful eyes..

  • i think i've learned more with snapfactory than with my school

  • Err, I didn't hear anything after you went outside. I was too distracted.

  • Amazing video mark thank's my friend greetings from Puerto Rico !!!!

  • @edgar25557junior Pura Vida!!

  • @snapfactory You say that in Costa Rica, not Puerto Rico. Thanks for the video anyway, amazing way of teaching.

  • @snapfactory hahaha Pura vida is from Costa Rica (in central America), not from Puerto rico lol (I'm Costarrican) really appreciate all these videos, extremely professional and easy to understand.

  • Perfect timing, Mark! I got an L-358 a few weeks ago and this video was very helpful! Thanks for your work. Bob

  • Very clear information!!
