This is the first specific play I remember watching live. I was 7 and I only really understood that the bucks were undefeated and I thought they were about to lose. I remember shitting bricks with my dad when this happened and Michael Jenkins became my favorite player right away. The only other play I remember from this season is against Miami when Krenzel through an interception and Maurice Clarett stripped the ball right back on the same fucking play. Sucks to see his career end in that way.
theres cheating everywhere. look at the schools that do well in football and then look at the list of teams under investigation. auburn, alabama, ohio state, oregon, usc...im sure you could find it every where else too
@butterflyer01 whatever dude. Every team has cheating, just not every team has gotten caught. YET. so save that holy rolling soap box speach for yourself.
How many players received free tattoos, loaner cars, and $100 handshakes on that team? Does this mean O$U went 0-0* in 2002? Should the 2002 Iowa team now claim they were sole champs?
8 years later, and this play still makes me smile. Krenzel might not have been the most talented QB ohio state has ever had, but he sure was CLUTCH. Amazing...
Smash mouth football.....fuck the spread offense, it ruins college football and doesnt prepare these kids for the NFL considering the spread doesnt work in the NFL
The most overlooked thing is the offensive line and running backs on this play, Purdue brought 7! All of which got off the ball great. They picked them up, formed a perfect pocket, and gave thier QB a chance to step up and deliver the ball.
It was about this moment when I knew that the Buckeyes were not going to lose that season. That feeling was tested a few times after that, but it ended up being the truth.
I'm a PSU fan, but I love watching this video. I know some people don't like Musburger, but I love that you can hear the excitement and his love of the game in his voice. Great call!
i noticed that as well. probably because the offensive lines under tressel have been sub par. if you wanna be a qb for tressel you better be ready to scramble away from pressure on 3rd and long. krenzel, smith and pryor could. bellisari, zwick and boeckman couldnt
@marcrib79 Krenzel made a big play we Ohio State needed one, Boekman couldn't do that, plus Krenzel actually made it to the NFL and got some playing time, Boekman got cut from everytime team he triedout for.
@OSUjunki ...he went to a national championship shut your fuckin mouth thats more than 99% of the quarterbacks that are in the NCAA right now. only 2 get to go once a year maybe 3 or 4 if injuries happen but nevertheless he was one of those people. Im a buckeyes fan but lets face it our quarterbacks that we send in the NFL have very short/brief careers
@GeneticRealityFilms...Christ, they were both average. Neither were great, but name one time when Boekman made a play in in the final minutes to win. 2-ints in the LSU game. Pic-6 in the USC game in 08.
@OSUjunki I remember a game against texas where he was in the wildcat formation and he threw a fade route to terelle pryor and pryor caught it for a touchdown in the final moments of the game. Sure we didnt win because our defense couldnt stop Texas but Boeckman had clutch in him in the part of the game that he had control over
That 2002 season was terrifying beyond words. It was only fun when it was finally over. Every week was a nightmare to sit through. After every win us buckeye fans didnt celebrate; we just got prepared for the terror we would have to deal with the next week. watching this reminds me of all the sleepless nights we had to endure that season
BEST SEASON EVER!I Agree every week was a pulse pounding finish. that season was life on the edge. I remeber watching this game when krenzel stepped back for the deep pass on 4th and 1, you should have seen my face! i know i blurted out a few cuss word. you should of seen how i reacted when they scored. Is there a season dvd ??
so many close games that year. I broke my toe, bruised knuckles and broke a lot of shit in my house over the season. I get pissed easy but I have calmed down over the years cause it isn't the end of the world.
I agree with every word you said. I thought to myself, "I should be enjoying these games, but instead I feel like chewing my nails off every week". And in half the games I swore that the dream would be over because of all the times they fell behind, only to pull a miracle over and over again. What a season ! I'll never forget it.
Michael Jenkins wasn't the option in this play, they simply had 3 recievers that went passed the first down and Jenkins went deep and he got the ball.
Right. Tressel used to be aggressive and now he's conservative. LOL. It couldn't be that he's got more than one dimension. Maybe he's been taken over by aliens.
Lol what happened to play calls like this tressel? Dear god. He would never call a risky play like this nowadays. Great game though, i remember watching it when it happened. I get the chills from the moment Krenzel walks up to the line.
though i think the decision too go to the endzone was all on krenzel.... The play call i read somewhere that it was supposed to go over the middle to the tight end....
Well yeah Jenkins definately wasnt the primary receiver. Nowadays though we would have just called a run up the gut or a rollout with pryor which usually fails. He doesent understand that Pryor is a lot more lethal on a broken play. That designed run stuff doesent work.
Every champion HAS to win one of these games. This is still unbelievable. Hartsock could have had a first down on the play before, which means this play doesn't happen. Instead, it did happen, and they took advantage. What a team. God, I loved the fight these kids had.
@Buckeyes569 That wasn't Tressel's call it was intended for Hartsock rolling to the left side of the field 5 yards down the field, he was covered well so Krenzel just heaved it to one Michael Jenkins, top 3 clutch player in Buckeye History.
@Buckeyes569 Tressel is conservative, but he goes for it on 4th down sometimes and he airs the ball out on deep routes still. He's probably one of the best coaches in the country (most bcs wins, and has a national championship).
@Buckeyes569 Krenzel didn't run the play called. The called play was the slant. I think that is Hartock who was open for the first, but Krenzel knew Jenkins had him.
I love Troy Smith and what he did for us and i think pryor will be great to...but i think krenzel was one of the best qb's we ever had, not the best arm and not the fastest but with the game on the line i want him, cause hes gonna give you everything he has
@dougash0630 he always made the right decision and seemed to get lots of first downs on his feet. He really had the ability to do it all. lol, with 1:50 left, I would have still just tried to get the first down, great call though!
@earthboundiscool Krenzel was not "terrible". What had happened was the depletion of several playmakers on defense (Doss, Scott) and on offense (Vance. Hartsock, several O-lineman) at play.
Smartest player to ever play football at Ohio State.
@CobainStJohns Guys leaving on Defense aren't going to hurt his game. When we didn't have Clarette pounding out the yards, his terrible inaccuracy was exposed. Stephen Hawking his way smarter than any football player, but that doesn't make him a good quarter back.
@dougash0630 --- agreed. Krenzel didn't have the best arm or the fastest 40-yd time, but he DID have the quickest brain we've had @ QB for a long time.
ugh... i hate to think how good we could of been with him...
is it safe to say we could have won another national title? our running game stank after his frosh year b4 pittman, and we only about 4-6 regular season games which would of been his sophmore, junior year.
Very safe to say. 2003 probably would have been the year. We would have done better than 8-4 in 2004, but still not nearly good enough to win it all. He would've won a Heisman. He probably wouldn't have come back for 2005 unless he didn't have a Heisman yet.
I'm thankful for the one year we did get out of him, and for how he helped us win a national title. But oh, would could have been...
I just got chills again, all these years later!! That season had so many impossible "4th and the season" plays that were heart stopping. Team of Destiny.
I think that this game, the following year at Ohio State, where Purdue missed a game-tying field goal amongst several others in regulation that could have won it, and the Wisconsin game in 2004 is what made Coach Tiller seem to lose his fire. Notice how Purdue hasn't been a legitimate Big Ten title contender since then. Hopefully Danny Hope (no pun intended) will bring Purdue back from mediocrity.
ohhh. Yeah i guess that does make more sense. Haha, I love OSU because of their teamwork as a student section and their kick ass HB's But I love Purdue even moree.
This is Unbelievably depressing lol. This was back in the good days before we totally trashed our rep and were competitive, I was a firm believer in OH ST beating Florida, LSU, and USC. Now idk what to think, they punch me in the gut everytime. Makes me so mad.
when krenzel let go of the ball my thought was oh well 10-1 is still a good record...then i almost dropped my newborn son off my lap...krenzel was and still is the man in cbus..
yeahh that play defined our season in 02 and yeah musburger is great and one of my favorite announcers but you can tell he is partial towards michigan but keith jackson is a legend...straight up
brent is the best damn college football announcer in the sports history!!!! he was there for fluties hail mary, purdue-ohio st. (duh), and the best of all... nebraska-mizzou in '97 and eveery one of those were some of the greatest calls ever!!!!!!!!!!
In the years that I've been watching OSU football, I don't think there is another play that puts a smile on my face and a tear in my eye more than this one. It's one of those sweet moments that will live in my memory for the rest of my life.
In the years that I've been watching OSU football, I don't think there is another play that puts a smile on my face and a tear in my eye more than this one. It's one of those sweet moments that will live in my memory for the rest of my life.
Gary Danielson referred to this play saturday when LSU had the ball near Kentucky's 40 yard line. But he called it "Ohio State's holy toledo play"! (moan) The guy was calling the game at Purdue with Musberger; you'd think he would remember the call. But he was a Purdue qb so maybe he's cognitively replaced "Holy Buckeye."
I don't know when I was more excited that year. This beautiful pass to Jenkins, Beating Mich (i can't say their name I throw up) and then being pepper sparyed, or blitzing Dorsey on 4th down of the greatest national championship game (argubaly) ever.
I'd like to thank Tressel for ending years of misery while having great teams be driven to losses because of WONDER BOY JOHN COOPER!
I have never been so sick in all my life... funny thing is, whenever there is a 4 and 1 play I call for the Ohio State go for broke... son of a bitch, you guys really cornholed us there
What an amazing block by Lydell Ross on that play. His career may not have lived up to expectations, but without the execution on that block, this play ends in a sack.
Although I think Musberger has lost a bit over the years, this is one of his finest calls in recent memory. I don't think any Ohio State fan will forget that "Holy Buckeye!" call for the rest of their lives. I know I won't.
Haha, I absolutely LOVE that you called the Purdue fan "crusty." And I watch this video like 4 times a day, and I still get goosebumps. I have to give it to Musberger on this call, he did an incredible job.
Most underrated part of this video: the crusty Purdue fan yelling at Jenkins as he celebrates with his teammates (around the 1:35 mark in the video). Someone was just a tad bit bitter.
ok purdue blizted both outside linebackers on this play.. putting man coverage on jenkins.. no safetys deep.. good call by tressel not luck it's called knowing who you have on the field and knowing jenkins would burn any purdue player on that team man up
actually, the call was for Gamble on a slant, but he ran the wrong route. Jenkins broke off his route and ran a streak when he saw that the Boilers were in a Cover-zero. Krenzel saw it, and the rest is History. HOLY BUCKEYE!
lol it's not called cover-zero.. it's called man and actually they had hartsock running a cross route over the middle simliar to the previous play.. i saw a special on this the next day and krenzel walked through who was running what and what he was thinking at the time
No worries. Man coverage takes a lot of forms depending on the responsibilities of the safeties (cover zero, cover 1, cover 2, etc). Though, in this case I guess "cover zero" = "Jenkins burning his severely overmatched defender".
what an awesome video. I do believe Purdue didnt do crap last year (2005) in the big ten, despite everyone hyping them up for not having a game against OSU and MICH!! Go Buckeyes!
Interesting definition of "lucky" -- on the road, the crowd going crazy, with the game, undefeated season and national title hopes on the line, coming up with a huge, game-winning play. Maybe by "lucky", you mean "getting to play Purdue"?
Only football game that made me cry out of pure excitement. That season was so amazing, words can't describe it. Feels like yesterday.

That was on third downs, not the full game. It says it in small text underneath.
I had thought the same thing at first but saw that.

yeahh that play defined our season in 02 and yeah musburger is great and one of my favorite announcers but you can tell he is partial towards michigan but keith jackson is a legend...straight up

I think it's the other way around, Musburger seems to love us and kieth was always partial to Michigan.

But he was a Purdue qb so maybe he's cognitively replaced "Holy Buckeye."

yo know u guys should have lost that game even if u did get the first down the fieldgoal would have been missed
BLOOD3MON 4 years ago
I don't know when I was more excited that year. This beautiful pass to Jenkins, Beating Mich (i can't say their name I throw up) and then being pepper sparyed, or blitzing Dorsey on 4th down of the greatest national championship game (argubaly) ever.
I'd like to thank Tressel for ending years of misery while having great teams be driven to losses because of WONDER BOY JOHN COOPER!
Go bucks and keep up the domination!

I think my favorite part is the body language of the two safety's the second the ball is caught. I could watch that all day. What a great play.

HOLY BUCKEYE!
Cambu17 5 years ago
What an amazing block by Lydell Ross on that play. His career may not have lived up to expectations, but without the execution on that block, this play ends in a sack.

boiler19, when purdue wins a freaking national championship, then talk!
mathew40 5 years ago
Although I think Musberger has lost a bit over the years, this is one of his finest calls in recent memory. I don't think any Ohio State fan will forget that "Holy Buckeye!" call for the rest of their lives. I know I won't.
linknlog 5 years ago
Haha, I absolutely LOVE that you called the Purdue fan "crusty." And I watch this video like 4 times a day, and I still get goosebumps. I have to give it to Musberger on this call, he did an incredible job.
jeffgrever 5 years ago
"Crusty" seemed like the right description. Other ones would include "disgruntled", "distraught", "heartbroken", and "bitter".
Buckeye97 5 years ago
yeah this would be the ONLY pro-buckeye call i have ever seen this retard make...
BuckeyeFan08 4 years ago
Most underrated part of this video: the crusty Purdue fan yelling at Jenkins as he celebrates with his teammates (around the 1:35 mark in the video). Someone was just a tad bit bitter.
Buckeye97 5 years ago
ok purdue blizted both outside linebackers on this play.. putting man coverage on jenkins.. no safetys deep.. good call by tressel not luck it's called knowing who you have on the field and knowing jenkins would burn any purdue player on that team man up
I3asket 5 years ago
actually, the call was for Gamble on a slant, but he ran the wrong route. Jenkins broke off his route and ran a streak when he saw that the Boilers were in a Cover-zero. Krenzel saw it, and the rest is History. HOLY BUCKEYE!
lvbuckeye 5 years ago
lol it's not called cover-zero.. it's called man and actually they had hartsock running a cross route over the middle simliar to the previous play.. i saw a special on this the next day and krenzel walked through who was running what and what he was thinking at the time
I3asket 5 years ago
Um ... man-to-man coverage with no safety help IS cover zero.
Buckeye97 5 years ago
never heard the term cover zero before .. i guess i jus always called it man coverage.. hmmm weird
I3asket 5 years ago
No worries. Man coverage takes a lot of forms depending on the responsibilities of the safeties (cover zero, cover 1, cover 2, etc). Though, in this case I guess "cover zero" = "Jenkins burning his severely overmatched defender".
Buckeye97 5 years ago
actually l3asket it wasn't supposed to go to jenkins a tight-end was supposed to catch it but krenzel changed it
ec476405 5 years ago
what an awesome video. I do believe Purdue didnt do crap last year (2005) in the big ten, despite everyone hyping them up for not having a game against OSU and MICH!! Go Buckeyes!
ericmc783 5 years ago
Interesting definition of "lucky" -- on the road, the crowd going crazy, with the game, undefeated season and national title hopes on the line, coming up with a huge, game-winning play. Maybe by "lucky", you mean "getting to play Purdue"?
Buckeye97 5 years ago
HAHAHAHAHAHA! GO BUCKS!!!!
