Some musical partnerships just work like a dream. I. & G Gershwin, Wilson/Love, Mccartney/Lennon etc but Steinman and Meat Loaf belong up there, Both are solid by themselves but put together they were just awesome and Meat Loaf struggles without him. His new album is just a catastrophe. California Dreamin? Meat?? Really????
I think this is Jim's closest to ever composing a song that sounds like a Springsteen song. Of course, Jim has some of Bruce's bandmates playing on his album, though I could always imagine how cool it would've been to hear The Boss singing this song!
Jim should have sung his own songs all along. He brings out the emotional depth and psychotic quality in his songs no other singer can. He's a great actor, too - judging by his recorded monologues. And, of course, a kickass pianist.
Jim Steinman the performer was, and remains, terribly underused. Meat's singing sounds unnecessary compared to Jim's.
@MeatTycoonDevious I was just thinking whether this would have been better if Meatloaf had sung but decided Jim has..... then I read what you said and it summed up exactly what I was thinking. I love Meat but Jim has a vulnerability that Meat doesn't have. Great comment.
I like the song very very much but I don't like the video. The song sounds very heroic but the video almost seems to make fun of it. Maybe I completely misunderstand it, but I prefer Jim's fine humour in his lyrics. :-) I prefer hearing this great song without seeing the video!
Meat Loaf without Jim Steinman is no one and Jim Steinman without Meat Loaf is no one. But together they are great Jim's creativity plus Meat's voice make them the BEST!
@Alexbg7 maybe if you would've posted this comment before Hang Cool Teddy Bear came out you would be right. Sure he hasnt had much success without songwriters but meatloaf is smart and plays to his strengths and brings in writers. I have so much more respect for meatloaf than other mediocre artists that try to sing, play guitar and write and ultimatly arent exeptional at any of them.
It is a good song, but Meatloaf's version is way better. First of all, Meatloaf is a better singer; but, more importantly, Brian May's guitar makes the song come alive!
Oh wow, big wtf on the video...especially the dancers just before the first chorus. Still, great song, don't know if I prefer this version or Meat Loaf's version from Bat out of Hell 3. They're both so amazingly good! Steinman's a musical genius
@Fenechboy11 It's all part of Steinman's never ending Lost Boys/Punk Peter Pan concept--and I *think* that's what the dancers represent (is that Wendy in the bed?) Of course like most of the videos he storyboarded himself at this time (think Total Eclipse of the Heart) filled with half naked dancing guys it comes off a little homoerotic (and cheezy). Not that I mind lol
@torchwood11 That was just my opinion. Only facts can be wrong. And I didn't say he was a bad singer, I just feel like Meat Loaf's voice is more suitible for the songs Jim writes. Just my opinion, sorry for putting it out there.
@CountryFordGirl26 Don't worry about it. This idiot has the opinion that only he counts. He is some jerk that think Meat Loaf is bad and anything Jim does is great. Jim is a great songwriter, but, even he said nobody sang his songs like Meat Loaf did.
Meatloaf is fantastic a great showman and artist one of my faves......But...... without Jim He admits himself he wouldnt have amounted to much........... Listen to Faster than the speed of night it has the same intro to holding out for a hero....... Jim was very versatile a fantastic singer song, writer and composer........ I feel they are both deserving of there own recognition in there own fields.... i love them both equally
Bad For Good was supposed to be Meat Loaf's followup to Bat Out Of Hell but Meat lost his voice and couldn't sing. Steinman went ahead and did the album himself -
It's cool to hear him sing this but I can totally picture Meat's voice instead.
I knew he wrote this song as soon as I bought Bat out of Hell III (in fact, I was surprised to find out that there were songs on the CD that weren't written by him), but I had no idea he actually sang.
I love his writing, and while they can sound childish at times (an example being "In the Land of the Pigs"), I wish I could write lyrics like his.
That being said, it's no wonder most people never became familiar with his songs until they were performed by others.
imo, There is nothing wrong with Jimmys voice on this one. Im glad the 'Godspeed' section was removed in Meatloafs version though. (5.15 - 5.40) It ruins the song..
This was always one of my favourites, but seeing this video has made it even better.

Oddly enough, I prefer Jim's voice over Meat's. I think I appreciate that it's more honest and pure. Less thatrical; more real rock n roll.
