I first fell in love with this song when I heard it many years ago on Raisin' In The Sun with Danny Glover. IMHO, the ONLY version of this movie worth watching. Hard to find for under a 100 bucks these days...
I'm 14 and....nah, I'm a 57-y-old English bloke, I knew about Bessie Smith, Billlie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Aretha etc. but I had ignored Dinah till now, thinking of her as some MOR singer. God was I wrong! What a singer, this is the blues, I didn't know what I was missing till now...
When I hear songs from her, Nat King Cole, Gloria Lynn, Nancy Wilson..... I just sit back and think about life and love... In that order - and Thank God that I'm still here to enjoy they great music. Keep the music coming!!
Life is quite the paradox. It's important that we realize that today is perhaps tomorrow's good ol' days comparatively speaking no matter what we're going through today. Live well today by understanding there is a "natural order" and purpose to life beyond the present moments pleasures. Too few of us ever learn that. Understand that, the things we love most (our children) come from the same body part as do our bodily waste. Paradox ...Huh?!
everybody young like myself should buy the billboard charts of the 60s,70s,80s because you'll be much happier listening to the songs of those times. trust me they sing with emotion and about emotions. educate yourselves!
@AloysiusTheFifth Richter failed completely,he spoiled it,(i know that's subjective).Perhaps he should write something of his own..you cannot gild the lily...certainly not a rose like Dinah.
@nicco47 I think Max Richter is one of the most uncommon componists today. His version and this one are completely different. His achievement is, in my opinion, bringing the sadness an melancholy of this song to the fore.
I agree, but my point is not about the commercialism as much as about how videos have shifted music from a listening experience to a partially visual experience---to the detriment of the listening experience, I believe. Not for all music, but much of it.
@BanyanTree1 Yes, I gathered that; it's just that I had Aretha's version on a (probably a cassette or even an LP maybe) and it was the first one I had heard. I'm glad you responded. Now I'm going to listen again! Yay!
I had heard this (many, many times) by Aretha, but this is the first time I was treated to Ms. Washington's interpretation. Heavenly. What a fantastic star.
@laurenblahblah8 I was born back then (1951) and it was fun as a child. But most of the music was singers like Dinah Gloria Lynn Billie, Frank, Johnny Mathis singing the standards that formed my tase in nmusic. Of course as a teen-ager I listened to Smokey, The Temps and Motown in general, but I always went back to the standards and the singers that sang them! Thank you ladybret for having such exquisite taste in music! And I am a New Yorker and New York was FUN!
I love this song, simply beautiful, I first heard my parents play it in the 1960's. I can remember how they would dance toit. I love everything she has sung. Great singer may she be forever remembered.
This was in the credits for Shutter Island?! This really is an amazing song. The first time I've ever heard it. I've heard other songs by her but damn am I pleased right now. Right when her voice kicked in I got that feeling that is equivalent to the phrase, "That's the stuff." Shutter Island is a great movie too by the way... this song is too short tho, guess I gotta start it over.
I don't know if it's her voice or just the song itself, but there's something so satisfying about this song. It makes me wanna smoke a cigaret and enjoy a glass of red wine while looking at the city lights at night..
The female vocalist of today don't even come close to the feeling and emotion that a singer like Dinah Washington is able to produce. The girls of today are screamers at best. This generation has done everything they can to kill music. What kind of crap will the generation after this be listening too, I wonder? They are going to miss out.
I really don't like when my comment section is used to push a link that has nothing to do with the artist / song. You want to send me video response please do, you want to speak of another artist singing the same song fine. However to use the comment section to to speak of another artist and push a link ( that has nothing to do with the artist or that particular song) I take exception. It's bad form. :)
Okay I truly know I have an old soul, cause to me this is a beautiful classic. I can listen to this over and over. Better than some modern music that is produced, but that is just my opinion. : )
This song brings alot of sweet memories, and sadness, because this brings to the missing of my mother.Dinah was one of her and my favorite artists.Always golden.Thank you, even though I shed these tears.
I wish everyone could sing with as much passion and heart about something meaningful. The problem now a days is artist often but not always dont have to work as hard as the artist back in the day did. Because of that i think you loose the soul.
@Justmesodeal I agree 100%. They are on a web site humming or screasching out a tune, and the next day they are megastars! What bullshit. These "real" singers and musicians worked years just to be heard, and if they were "discovered" it was a miracle, with not too much money! Nothing is worked for anymore. Do you know of the great talent that was never discovered?Anyway.
, all you have to do is have an EAR, and you know who's got it and who ain't!
wtf is this. bieber has fucked everything (along with many artists). the meaning of music has been altered, hold on to ur seats, cuz EVERYTHING is gonna get seriously fucked.
A #1 hit for the late Dinah Washington in the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 68th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. This song was also heard on the recent motion picture hit, Shutter Island.
Love, love, LOVE this song.....chills all over the body. I can listen and have listened over and over WAY before leaving this response. Thank you kindly for posting such a gem. "what good am I, heaven only knows". my my my my my
@fmazzar How can one song scream out something for a whole generation? There was a lot of crap going on back there just like there is a lot of good music being released today. Quality music survives and the crap fades away. In 50 years somebody will say the same about our generation. And they won't be talking about Justin Bieber.
@halldormarteinsson Have to say that one of the problems of today's music is due to music videos. Not because videos are a bad thing per se, but because too often the recording is made with the video in mind, rather than for the pure listening pleasure, and the result (not always, but too often) is music that may look good but doesn't sound as good.
@vinylsingleman I totally understand what you mean and I agree that there can be too much commercialism isn't good. But in my opinion people tend to forget that there is a lot of great music being made in the world today just as there was a lot of crap music being made back then.
But whatever our views on that matter is we can at least agree on this song, it's magical :)
I used to have a different version of this song, and Dinah really let loose near the end...does anyone know where I can find this other really moving version?
She is unbelievable..her timing..everything.. Thanks for posting!
@xinlingxue thanks for the tip, but I'm looking for another older version...it's just slightly different instrumentally than the original (a little jazzier) and she sounds a little hoarse in the one I'm looking for...
@ladybret Luv Her!!!!!!!!!!! I wish there were still singers like dinah, ella fritzerald, and sarah vaughn. They exmplified grace and sophistication.....i feel so sorry for my daughter because she will never expereince real music!!!
DINAH WAS ONE OF THE BEST SINGERS EVER. THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE SO MANY RECORDINGS BY HER. HER RECORDS STILL STAND UP NEXT TO ANYBODY'S. SHE HAD TASTE, POISE AND GUTS.
I like both versions, this and the On the Nature of Daylight remix. It's amazing how different the same voice and tune can sound with different backing music. Both versions are beautiful!
Im into rock mostly, but i love this song.I originally heard it in the movie,Killer of Sheep.I just finished watching shutter island and they played it at the end of that film too.
I prefer the Dinah Washington & Max Richter-This bitter earth - On the nature of daylight remix. It makes her words sound even more heart felt and captuers the true essence of the lyrics.
This is so lovely, ive never heard Dinahs version b4 but ive known about it since the early 90s when the great Miki Howard remade it.Can someone please post Miki Howards version from 1992?Mikis is more polished in my opinion but Dinahs is just raw and kinda sassy!!!!!
yeah i work at the movie theaters and every time i go to clean the theater that Shutter island plays in i here it and it kind of started to grow on me
I guess that was slated more toward others who would beg to differ, but everyone has his/her preference. I just think Dinah was so on with both her voice and how she sang the song. No one can touch her!
Dinah allows me to go back in time. I love the forties and fifties, the way people lived, they way they dressed, it always feels like I lived during that time.
@jenn1ifer I disagree. Sorry, but Billie Holiday sounds too much like she was drunk or stoned, or both (whether she was or not is irrelevant). I prefer Dinah's sharp tight, controlled vocals, not the relaxed singing of Billie's. Plus, her voice just does not appeal to me in anyway. Dinah's voice is warmer. Again, to each her own.
This song will forever be associated with Killer of Sheep.

Why is it we never hear the Gene Chandler version, recorded in the early 70s? Very short, to the point.

I think Dinah was the best female jazz singer of all time! (My opinion, don't kill me!)

Why should I kill you? Because I agree with you 100%!!!

I have about 40 albums of her, that should give you an idea Tina hehe

Okay, that says it all!

@tinadimeo billie holiday "ill be seeing you" cant be beat
jenn1ifer 1 year ago
@jenn1ifer I disagree. Sorry, but Billie Holiday sounds too much like she was drunk or stoned, or both (whether she was or not is irrelevant). I prefer Dinah's sharp tight, controlled vocals, not the relaxed singing of Billie's. Plus, her voice just does not appeal to me in anyway. Dinah's voice is warmer. Again, to each her own.
