  • This song will forever be associated with Killer of Sheep.

  • I first fell in love with this song when I heard it many years ago on Raisin' In The Sun with Danny Glover. IMHO, the ONLY version of this movie worth watching. Hard to find for under a 100 bucks these days...

  • I'm 14 and....nah, I'm a 57-y-old English bloke, I knew about Bessie Smith, Billlie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Aretha etc. but I had ignored Dinah till now, thinking of her as some MOR singer. God was I wrong! What a singer, this is the blues, I didn't know what I was missing till now...

  • The Earth wakes up..........

  • When I hear songs from her, Nat King Cole, Gloria Lynn, Nancy Wilson..... I just sit back and think about life and love... In that order - and Thank God that I'm still here to enjoy they great music. Keep the music coming!!

    Thanks!!!!!

  • i prefer this song to be mixed with the shutter island soundtrack

  • Wonderful, thank you very much.

  • wonderful, moving piece, mainly for the lyrics. but Dinah Washington was also a great

  • estos estadounidenses no pueden escribir en español para uno leer sus tontas opiniones

  • Life is quite the paradox. It's important that we realize that today is perhaps tomorrow's good ol' days comparatively speaking no matter what we're going through today. Live well today by understanding there is a "natural order" and purpose to life beyond the present moments pleasures. Too few of us ever learn that. Understand that, the things we love most (our children) come from the same body part as do our bodily waste. Paradox ...Huh?!

"This bitter earth can be not so bitter at all."

  • The Max Richter version is actually as beautiful as this one. Two great artists who made great music...

  • @AloysiusTheFifth Richter failed completely,he spoiled it,(i know that's subjective).Perhaps he should write something of his own..you cannot gild the lily...certainly not a rose like Dinah.

  • @nicco47 I think Max Richter is one of the most uncommon componists today. His version and this one are completely different. His achievement is, in my opinion, bringing the sadness an melancholy of this song to the fore.

  • "But while a voice within me cries, I know someone may answer my call.

And this bitter earth may not be so bitter after all."

  • This is a completely wonderful song.

  • I agree, but my point is not about the commercialism as much as about how videos have shifted music from a listening experience to a partially visual experience---to the detriment of the listening experience, I believe. Not for all music, but much of it.

  • @vinylsingleman So completely and utterly true. My feelings exactly. Thanks for saying it.

  • @vinylsingleman Then close your eyes...and listen,you will enjoy it,and hear the nuances.Enjoy

  • @BanyanTree1 Yes, I gathered that; it's just that I had Aretha's version on a (probably a cassette or even an LP maybe) and it was the first one I had heard. I'm glad you responded. Now I'm going to listen again! Yay!

  • I had heard this (many, many times) by Aretha, but this is the first time I was treated to Ms. Washington's interpretation. Heavenly. What a fantastic star.

  • @jgrell7642 Just to be clear, this is the original. Aretha did a cover in tribute after Washington's untimely death.

  • Perfect song to listen to while staring at Nighthawks by Edward Hopper

  • This song is so beautiful. What an elegant voice.

  • my Moms fav tune by her!!

    its so sad but true.....

life sound so different back then so simple, people was different....

  • Sometimes I wish I was born back then maybe in old New York.

    Yeah that would be great...

  • @laurenblahblah8 I was born back then (1951) and it was fun as a child. But most of the music was singers like Dinah Gloria Lynn Billie, Frank, Johnny Mathis singing the standards that formed my tase in nmusic. Of course as a teen-ager I listened to Smokey, The Temps and Motown in general, but I always went back to the standards and the singers that sang them! Thank you ladybret for having such exquisite taste in music! And I am a New Yorker and New York was FUN!

  • @early60srcool Sounds wonderful! Actually I really love Motown and the Temptations so you got the best of both worlds! Lucky!

  • it's sad that Ke$ha has more views than this greatness

  • I love this song, simply beautiful, I first heard my parents play it in the 1960's. I can remember how they would dance toit. I love everything she has sung. Great singer may she be forever remembered.

  • This was in the credits for Shutter Island?! This really is an amazing song. The first time I've ever heard it. I've heard other songs by her but damn am I pleased right now. Right when her voice kicked in I got that feeling that is equivalent to the phrase, "That's the stuff." Shutter Island is a great movie too by the way... this song is too short tho, guess I gotta start it over.

  • Good old times

  • OMG im sooooooooo glad i watched the credits on Shutter Island cuz it help me discover this LEGENDARY song #LOVEIT

  • I love this song, it is so moving!! It is one of my favorites.

  • I LOVE YOU !! XOXOX

  • SHUTTER ISLAND ANY1

  • I don't know if it's her voice or just the song itself, but there's something so satisfying about this song. It makes me wanna smoke a cigaret and enjoy a glass of red wine while looking at the city lights at night..

  • @wilhemsen1 cant believe we share the exact same feeling. My physical body is here but my soul belongs to 60's

  • 1 person is clearly deaf.

  • The female vocalist of today don't even come close to the feeling and emotion that a singer like Dinah Washington is able to produce. The girls of today are screamers at best. This generation has done everything they can to kill music. What kind of crap will the generation after this be listening too, I wonder? They are going to miss out.

  • what a truthful and beautiful song. it says so much about the relevancy of life, love and pain

  • I love this song and her, :) All the Great Singers are gone now.. :(

  • @nickums69 Idk, they are still great female singers, but male singer aren't good at all anymore.

  • I really don't like when my comment section is used to push a link that has nothing to do with the artist / song. You want to send me video response please do, you want to speak of another artist singing the same song fine. However to use the comment section to to speak of another artist and push a link ( that has nothing to do with the artist or that particular song) I take exception. It's bad form. :)

  • @ladybret hail The Queen.

  • When we sang about things of deeper emotional resonance than drunken weekend revelry.

  • <3

  • i came to this through chris webby, like a boss

  • what good is love that no one shares?

  • i listened to this song after my unc died, RIP EDDIE MITCHELL

  • what a wonderful song, song by a marvelous song stress!

  • Sung from the heart.

  • Sung from the heart.

  • Had heard this song before and never paid much attention to it. It was almost like it wasn't a song until Dinah sang it.

  • Classic!

  • 1 person is really regretting their desicion

  • Okay I truly know I have an old soul, cause to me this is a beautiful classic. I can listen to this over and over. Better than some modern music that is produced, but that is just my opinion. : )

  • I have 32 albums that were passed down to me from my parents and every song has a precious jewel. Just fantastic

  • my mommy loves her ! <3

    ...beautiful sonq !

  • @skidder2007

I'm with you (and add in Aretha Franklin)

  • Everyone else talks about Shutter Island. I'm going to go out on a limb and say does anyone remember this from Killer of Sheep?

  • i love how theres no dislikes

  • @AprilorBob - Unfortunately not anymore

  • so powerful... it reminds us that life can be cold but there's also a beauty in that coldness itself... only Dianah washington can do this!

  • I think Fantasia would be perfect on singing this.

  • This song brings alot of sweet memories, and sadness, because this brings to the missing of my mother.Dinah was one of her and my favorite artists.Always golden.Thank you, even though I shed these tears.

  • heard the other version in shutter island when it first came out. the song and the singer.. both are flawless.

  • i love uu dinah washington

  • I wish everyone could sing with as much passion and heart about something meaningful. The problem now a days is artist often but not always dont have to work as hard as the artist back in the day did. Because of that i think you loose the soul.

  • @Justmesodeal I agree 100%. They are on a web site humming or screasching out a tune, and the next day they are megastars! What bullshit. These "real" singers and musicians worked years just to be heard, and if they were "discovered" it was a miracle, with not too much money! Nothing is worked for anymore. Do you know of the great talent that was never discovered?Anyway.

, all you have to do is have an EAR, and you know who's got it and who ain't!

  • wtf is this. bieber has fucked everything (along with many artists). the meaning of music has been altered, hold on to ur seats, cuz EVERYTHING is gonna get seriously fucked.

  • One of the most powerfull musics...ever!! :) So true... so simple... so... perfect!

  • A #1 hit for the late Dinah Washington in the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 68th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. This song was also heard on the recent motion picture hit, Shutter Island.

  • She was rather good indeed. And what a great string arrangement.

  • @tinadimeo - Of course she was..No DEATH required!

  • Love, love, LOVE this song.....chills all over the body. I can listen and have listened over and over WAY before leaving this response. Thank you kindly for posting such a gem. "what good am I, heaven only knows". my my my my my

  • This song screams out that the generation of our parents had better taste than us!

  • @fmazzar

    indeed.

  • @fmazzar I could not agree more with you! Our parents AND greatparents.

  • @fmazzar Good said.

  • @fmazzar How can one song scream out something for a whole generation? There was a lot of crap going on back there just like there is a lot of good music being released today. Quality music survives and the crap fades away. In 50 years somebody will say the same about our generation. And they won't be talking about Justin Bieber.

  • @halldormarteinsson Have to say that one of the problems of today's music is due to music videos. Not because videos are a bad thing per se, but because too often the recording is made with the video in mind, rather than for the pure listening pleasure, and the result (not always, but too often) is music that may look good but doesn't sound as good.

  • @vinylsingleman I totally understand what you mean and I agree that there can be too much commercialism isn't good. But in my opinion people tend to forget that there is a lot of great music being made in the world today just as there was a lot of crap music being made back then.

But whatever our views on that matter is we can at least agree on this song, it's magical :)

  • @vinylsingleman meant to say "too much commercialism and that's not good." :)

  • LOVE ~

  • classic masterpiece.

  • this version is just as good as the re-mix they did for shutter island....both classics.

  • ANOTHER ZERO DISLIKE!!! CONGRATS

  • no dislikes… this means something

  • My favorite Dinah Washington song. Simply beautiful! They don't write songs like this anymore.

  • Indeed belongs on everybody's top 10 list of female vocalists...

  • @Divette2 May u recommend some other old school vocalists ? Both males and females are good

  • @gorilaz0n Sam Fletcher,nancy wilson

  • @iralevifan thx

  • I used to have a different version of this song, and Dinah really let loose near the end...does anyone know where I can find this other really moving version?

She is unbelievable..her timing..everything.. Thanks for posting!

  • @alovespellster you can go and search for that version. It is the one with max richter. It's much more emotional than this version

  • @xinlingxue thanks for the tip, but I'm looking for another older version...it's just slightly different instrumentally than the original (a little jazzier) and she sounds a little hoarse in the one I'm looking for...

  • @ladybret Luv Her!!!!!!!!!!! I wish there were still singers like dinah, ella fritzerald, and sarah vaughn. They exmplified grace and sophistication.....i feel so sorry for my daughter because she will never expereince real music!!!

  • this is the first time i heard the real 'this bitter earth' i have been listening to the one that Max Richter remade. they both rock!!

  • Beautiful song...it gives me the chills listening to it.

  • DINAH WAS ONE OF THE BEST SINGERS EVER. THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE SO MANY RECORDINGS BY HER. HER RECORDS STILL STAND UP NEXT TO ANYBODY'S. SHE HAD TASTE, POISE AND GUTS.

  • best jazz voice ever.

  • gotta love "that jazz"!

  • There were about 5 or 6 good female "torch singers" ever, and Dinah was 1 of them!

  • If you adore this song then I adore you, warts and all. I'm not drunk, lol. Love you all.

  • Among the most beautiful songs ever...ever...ever

  • I like both versions, this and the On the Nature of Daylight remix. It's amazing how different the same voice and tune can sound with different backing music. Both versions are beautiful!

  • @cyaftie Theres another verson as well by Venetian Snares its also a jazz

  • Music. Truly, then, now, and tomorrow, this is music.

  • there's no jazz singer that will ever have a voice like Dinah!!

  • She had that one of a kind voice! She had no equal. What a Difference A Day Makes - was such a big hit for her. Thank you.

  • forgot how much this song moves me - my mom would play it whenever she got depressed. It's still cool, though.

  • Good song.

  • What a fuking Bitter Earth it is

  • Hey, wasn't this song used in Scorsese's Shutter Island?

  • @degree7 yes, it was coupled with Max Richters 'on the nature of daylight'..

  • Im into rock mostly, but i love this song.I originally heard it in the movie,Killer of Sheep.I just finished watching shutter island and they played it at the end of that film too.

  • "today you're young, too soon you're old,", Dinah's spoken the bitter truth. Dinah, the precursor to r&b/soul. Dinah gone too young

  • Classic's man, gotta love'em ^_^ !!!

  • I prefer the Dinah Washington & Max Richter-This bitter earth - On the nature of daylight remix. It makes her words sound even more heart felt and captuers the true essence of the lyrics.

  • harrowing

  • Only one voice like Dinah's! Wow! Loved this so much.. Thank you.

  • Now isn´t this a lovely song. Dinah W has got the most beautiful voice and she sings with such a feeling. Thanks dear Charlotte for this share!

    Maggan

  • Now isn´t this a lovely song and she sings with such a feeling!

Thanks dear Charlotte for this share!

  • "Questa terra amara, dopotutto, forse non è così amara" Dinah Washington. Vorrei dirlo con te.

  • My life theme song.

  • This song reminds me of the movie Shutter Island (its the very last song)

  • @aprilaXmeXfavorite cuz it is

  • Oh my gosh her voice is amazing :)

  • it's almost like this song and "on the nature of daylight" were made to be combined!

  • Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice, and beautiful emotion.

  • Comment removed

  • remarkable, extraorindary voice, theme song to the movie killer of sheep.

  • on shutter island the movie it was very good

  • @lycansre I fully agree with you is really beautiful i write from venezuela.

  • Hauntingly beautiful

  • rien que des frissons en écoutant cette douce musique à la voie puissance

  • This is so lovely, ive never heard Dinahs version b4 but ive known about it since the early 90s when the great Miki Howard remade it.Can someone please post Miki Howards version from 1992?Mikis is more polished in my opinion but Dinahs is just raw and kinda sassy!!!!!

  • this song reminds my hhusband of his dad. almost 40 yrs ago.

  • Ebon..it is still one of her favorites. It has great meaning to me..to us.

  • Dinah OWNS this song. It takes your breath away! CLASSIC!

  • SO ..SO..SO.... BEAUTIFUL

  • This song reminds me of my ex gf. It was one of her

  • Just heard this as the credits roll on "Shutter Island" same artist-different rendition= a masterpiece...her prize--she got to be the best.....

  • Haunting, but BEAUTIFUL song by the FIRST Queen!!!!!! There's only been one other crowned after her...ARETHA!!!!!

  • @Hittman305 Does everybody who works at the Theaters like this song?!

    XD

I work there too! And I'm loving it.

    ;D

  • @NumbedSilence yea im loving the song in work too! lol but the instrumental is different is it not?

  • yeah i work at the movie theaters and every time i go to clean the theater that Shutter island plays in i here it and it kind of started to grow on me

  • Me too!

  • Haha and I'm a projectionist that hears this every night too.

  • Really wonderful song and performance. Ive loved this woman for years but I wasnt aware of this song until I saw Shutter Island last week.

  • Sing, Miss Ruth Jones!!

  • Why is it we never hear the Gene Chandler version, recorded in the early 70s? Very short, to the point.

  • I've been waiting for someone to put this song on here. This is my favorite Dinah song ever.

  • this is my elderly mother's favorite song...she always said it "told a story"...

    here's to you mom...

  • I think Dinah was the best female jazz singer of all time! (My opinion, don't kill me!)

  • Why should I kill you? Because I agree with you 100%!!!

  • I have about 40 albums of her, that should give you an idea Tina hehe

  • Okay, that says it all!

  • I guess that was slated more toward others who would beg to differ, but everyone has his/her preference. I just think Dinah was so on with both her voice and how she sang the song. No one can touch her!

  • Dinah allows me to go back in time. I love the forties and fifties, the way people lived, they way they dressed, it always feels like I lived during that time.

  • @tinadimeo She was.

  • @tinadimeo

There are a lot of people who could fill that slot but she's definately up there.

  • @tinadimeo agreed

  • @tinadimeo You are absolutely right.

  • @tinadimeo billie holiday "ill be seeing you" cant be beat

  • @jenn1ifer I disagree. Sorry, but Billie Holiday sounds too much like she was drunk or stoned, or both (whether she was or not is irrelevant). I prefer Dinah's sharp tight, controlled vocals, not the relaxed singing of Billie's. Plus, her voice just does not appeal to me in anyway. Dinah's voice is warmer. Again, to each her own.
