@99centt Technically yes, the first and foremost job of all soldiers and marines is infantry. But will you fight as a foot soldier only if you get combat jobs, request to go on a mission if you don't, or they are stretched to their limits with mission and require extra boots on the ground. And marines only go to Afghan now. And deployed you will have down time it is usually 12 on 12 off 6 - 7 days a week.
Hey, can anyone answer me this because my Marine recruiter is not being specific: Do all marines have to fight as foot soldiers? I am 18 and right after high school going to boot camp. My job would be computer technician/repair. Would I have to fight in firefights at age 18? Are all marines foot soldiers? What are the chances of me being sent to Afghan or Iraq? Is it a 24/7 job, as in being stuck repairing computers all day? Is it, your going out their because I told you to go out and fight?
@99centt Honestly you have nothing to worry about, even though im in the army I know a few things about the Marines, yes they generally train all marines to be infantry, but it also depends on your unit which you will understand after boot camp. I wouldnt worry to much about being deployed its not AS bad as people make it out to be, im not saying its fun but its not entirely dreadful. Yes your recruiter will lie, its there job, but you will enjoy the family feeling you get from being in the mil.
every soldier will learn basic fighting skills in basic training reguardless of your chosen mos. At 18 you may have to defend yourself, it is a war. When traveling in a convoy who do thing the enemy would rather fight the trained infantry leading the convoy or the cooks and i.t. guys traveling to their new job at the big beach. Your odds are slimmer of facing combat but in no way shape or form should you ever believe you have no chance of seeing combat.

@Rustystud i know it looks bad and military doctrine says that the best place for atry, outpost, observation post ect are best deployed on tops of hill and or mtns but the problem is that the mountains in afgan are so steep that it is very difficult to do that and the topsoil on the mtns there are very unstable

Generally, You want an OP on an even surface for an LZ. Unfortunately you cant get that in many areas of terrain. What they need to do is set up an OP at one of the enemies strategic firing positions so they can cover the COP.
@Rustystud - yes, seems quite odd... almost as if they were deliberately provoking an attack so they could hopefully engage and kill them. A lot of these type of outposts (being closely overlooked by mountainous terrain) were attacked and the defenders wiped out. Not a good strategy if the defenders are outnumbered 20-1 with no air support.

The location actually seems fine, It seems large enough for helicopters to come in, the enemy has to go down and slightly back up to get to the outpost.

Hey, can anyone answer me this because my Marine recruiter is not being specific: Do all marines have to fight as foot soldiers? I am 18 and right after high school going to boot camp. My job would be computer technician/repair. Would I have to fight in firefights at age 18? Are all marines foot soldiers? What are the chances of me being sent to Afghan or Iraq? Is it a 24/7 job, as in being stuck repairing computers all day? Is it, your going out their because I told you to go out and fight?

@99centt Honestly you have nothing to worry about, even though im in the army I know a few things about the Marines, yes they generally train all marines to be infantry, but it also depends on your unit which you will understand after boot camp. I wouldnt worry to much about being deployed its not AS bad as people make it out to be, im not saying its fun but its not entirely dreadful. Yes your recruiter will lie, its there job, but you will enjoy the family feeling you get from being in the mil.

every soldier will learn basic fighting skills in basic training reguardless of your chosen mos. At 18 you may have to defend yourself, it is a war. When traveling in a convoy who do thing the enemy would rather fight the trained infantry leading the convoy or the cooks and i.t. guys traveling to their new job at the big beach. Your odds are slimmer of facing combat but in no way shape or form should you ever believe you have no chance of seeing combat.

Generally, You want an OP on an even surface for an LZ. Unfortunately you cant get that in many areas of terrain. What they need to do is set up an OP at one of the enemies strategic firing positions so they can cover the COP.

A lot of these type of outposts (being closely overlooked by mountainous terrain) were attacked and the defenders wiped out. Not a good strategy if the defenders are outnumbered 20-1 with no air support.
