One day the giant Govt Ponzi scheme will be bankrupted and companies will follow their natural path to bankruptcy no thanks to the thieving unions who burden these once great companies with their "you owe me a living" demands.
Hey, here is a novel idea - pay for your own life! Once companies are free to size up or down thanks to more efficient fully automated high volume production process the world will be a better place.
Buy a Honda? So support another country? Ford has been here since 1903 and you say buy a Honda? Ford took no bail out money..they dug themselves out of the hole they were in. So buy a Honda? I say FUCK YOU.
the honda driver is a dumb ass .hes the reason the usa.is in this shape.whats wrong with a retirement guess those overpaid talk show hosts think every body should work till they die
The reason why the Big Three pay those benefits is because Union Workers would go on STIRKE otherwise. Ford loses a LOT less money by paying heath care for their workers compared to waiting out weeks of strikes to stop paying heath care.
The UAW needs to understand they can get $80 and hour and expect to have their companies able to stay afloat.
This loud mouth that drives a POS honda seems to forget that the auto manufactures like Packard never reached the "Big Three" level of production. Furthermore we had other manufacturing jobs (both other car manufactures, and other industries. Now with companies outsourcing jobs by the thousands we need every manufacturing job we can get.
I am calling to all people of the world to give attention to my demand and accept the truth of my revelation that the only way for economic recovery is to accept the reality in the event of the second world war that the national treasure of the world was brought to my nation herein the Philippine island and buried for the reservation of my great activity that my Father in Heaven has preparing all these for the fulfillment of his Promise and for the salvation of His people.
thanks for pointing me to this 13andrich...looking back on it, I'd say they nailed it. Ford only avoided massive bailout becuase they ran out of money before GM or CHry. They got lucky and were able to go into massive debt in the private sector, instead of sucking on the mother land's teat.
Ford's cash flow is still very negative, and the DID take 5.9B in "energy research" money, so they could TRY to compete with Japan. Funny tho, cause Nissan got money too! American jobs don't equal Union jobs.
FOX news is hilarious with this piece...if our auto industry goes belly up there will be a great depression in this country. There will be millions more businesses going under not just the auto industries...tire co...plastic co...steel co...glass co...trucking co... this goes alot deeper than alot of people realize. Everyone from the C.E.O.... all the way down through the union need to take cuts... OUT OF BUSINESS IS NOT AN OPTION
I realy wish they could pull their heads out....and get the Facts straight. Ford HAS NOT taken ANY money and is holding their own in fact their stock is up and are reopening plants ........Looking Gooooood!
Its about time the government sided with the middle class and not the hedge fund managers that ran up housing and gasoline pieces that contributed to the financial crisis.
The government needs to put the collar back on the financial industry!

Many experts point to the Financial Modernization Act as the cause of the current financial crisis.
These people are very evil may God have mercy on there souls. These same news casters would like the police, firemen military to have no insurance or pensions, after 30 years. Shame on them. May be they should get payed about 10 dollars an hour people would line up a mile long to take there jobs. After all there not that good.
These news broadcasters sound like they want to get rid of the insurance and pensions for police firemen military postoffice workers ect... after they put 30 years of work in shame on them. I bet there would be line a mile long to take there jobs at 10% of there pay. Saving all of us money on the products we buy that advertisers pay this media outlet.
Traders are what these people are. may be we should replace there jobs with some high school students. Better yet with some cheap foreign labor. Because there not that good.
check out John Riches shutten down detroit and the ibuyusa video on you tube the guy has great words. We cant be sheep and spellbound anymore by deceitful politicians, media, and forieign unfair trading countries wich are paying and owning these peoples greedy souls. They are not American Patriots They are about me not We.Support Fair trade Domestic owned. BUY USA on line and at stores. Country First !!!
That guy on the right is a douche bag. Buy a honda thats a laugh and a half. O yes I'm going to buy a honda and send my money over seas to were I well never see it again. If you dont under stand what im saying, im being sarcastic. This is BULL SHIT. My dad is going to lose half of his retirement if gm goes bankrupt.
Fed money is not taxpayer money. The fed prints money and loans it to the car companies who pay interest on it. The fed now has the motor companies on a hook.
The thievery is by the fed, not the car companies.
i've been working at shops my whole life and noticed that, from a mechanics point of view, every car is bad in their own ways. hondas with their electrical/computer problems, ford "exploders" with shitty ball joints, etc etc. but you know as much as i do, that 90% of american drivers just don't know how to properly take care of their cars. a lead foot and late oil changes. i love cars too much. i really hope GM figures something out, they have until the end of march to do so
I'm working with some Germans here in the US on an upstart car and they are telling me how the economy is a mess in Germany, the auto industry is a mess, the banks got a huge chunk of money from the gov't and still no one can get a loan, and now a couple of the German auto companies are going to the gov't asking for a loan...no kidding...and dumbasses here still want to believe this is all about only the US cars.
Has everyone lost there fucking minds!! Why are people so hell bent on reducing UAW workers wages,benefits..etc???? Who the fuck do you think buy's the products which keeps this economy alive!! go ahead pay a work $14 dollars an hour, they will never buy another new car again!! enough said!
The unions have supported the Democrat party because they have vote more often for the middle class and workers rights then the republications; the union has a research department that looks at workers needs to see how our Representatives have voted in the past. Both partys SUCK but its a case of lesser of two evils. The republican have had 8 years to turn things around and I for one can say I was better off 8 years ago.
Our long range product plan is robust, realistic and green. The plane features 24 major lunches from 2009 through 2012. We also will put our first electric drive vehicle into production for North America by 2010 with 3 additional models by 2013
I.ll sell you a low milage GMC Jimmy ..you can still get parts and parts and parts and keep the ecdonomy moving and you can feel good on the other hand my wifes toyota with more milage does not keep the economy moving..both are 4 wheelers and the toyota with 100 thousand miles and a smaller engine (that doeasnt burn oil) has only needed brakes ,oil changes and tires...the GMC.....well do you really want to know !
Beachbums150, No thanks to the GMC Jimmy. I once owned a 1990 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 4cyl. engine. I put over 350,000 miles on this car, and the oil that came out of it looked like maple syrup. It was an excellent running car. The only thing wrong with it was the floor boards rusted out, and water would gush in after running through puddles. For 10 years it took me back and forth from Orlando to Chicago. It was the best car I've ever owned. I'm hoping my Cobalt will do the same w/o the rust.
Dont freak out the big 3 will be around for years to come, Toyota will lose money this year and next year also. This is just an industrial cycle and the big 3 will come out of it stronger and hopefully smarter. Youre always going have foreign car buyers that will try to dad mouth US workers and say anything to justify buying a car and sending the profits to Japan or who knows ware
Do you honestly think that if they go under, its just going to be like they never existed?
Do you think with millions of GM's currently falling apart on the roads, that Magna, Federal Mogul, Spicer, ETC, ETC, are just going to STOP making parts for vehicles that are everywhere we look?
Time to come down from cloud "auto sector fear mongering hype" and come back to the reality i like to call Earth.
Its not supporting the economy. All you stupid people buying quality cars are stupid! You should be buying peices of shit that regularly fail and allow parts companies to rake in billions of dollars in profits (and send them to Canada of all places; Magna Auto Parts)
PLEASE DONT STOP BUYING THE GARBAGE! Its actually really good garbage! Try it, its not THAT bad really. just breaks down once in a while and needs about $1000 to fix it. So what?
Mattmatt, I'll just bet that you're schizophrenic, aren't you? Either that or you have a split personality. There is medication for this, I suggest you try it.
YES!Bush dose have a Brain I take back 1/8 of the things I said about him.LOL People need cars, and their is millions of people that would not be caught dead in a foreign car and love their GM,Ford and ChryslerSo people buy the car that you like, but dont cry If you get ran off the road by a good old American car or you get buy American keyed into your door. And dont come back with my foreign car is made in the US because the profits go right to Japan and no true blue American is going to by it.
i'm on my 2nd monte carlo after driving the first for ten years and putting over 100k miles on it and then passing it on to my son. the only shop time it saw was standard maintenance for the first 100k miles. the 2nd monte has 45k miles on it and has not given a hint of trouble.
sorry you had a bad experience with gm but i've had nothing but satisfaction.
ps. my brother's toyota corrola is having weird issues...hmmm.
So these AMERICANS working at say, one of Toyotas plants in the USA aren't being paid right, their income is being sent to a family in Japan?
This is what you are suggesting when you say ALL the profits go right to japan.
If this were true, then simply Toyota would be building cars in the USA using americans as slaves, beating them forcing them to make cars. Because you know, their pay cheques (a direct result of Toyota profits) aren't spent in the USA...
they are suppose to need this loan to sustain them for a few months. they dont deserve it until the uaw gives up thier share. if bob corker runs for president i will vote for him.
most of the retirees made four times what they should have and draw social security now anyway. Most of them have two houses and new cars and several hundred thousands in the bank while non UAW workers struggle to feed thier families. I have absolutely no sympathy for them. They are the chosen ones who have earned the right to plunder GM for their entitlement because they are special. Many can retire at age forty-eight where most people have no choice but to work into their seventies. fuck them
fuck ford and gm they fucking suck im american and i have a 07 honda civic si with 30000 miles and no problems i will never buy another american car ever again my last car was a ford zx2 and my transmition went out at 36000 miles and problems out the ass fixing on repairs daily is the old saying......
FUCK the american automakers and their slimey scum bag UAW beggers.
I think its about time they taste just scraping by at minimum wage.
Ford might survive because they actually trimmed some of their fat, but the other two, Chrysler threatened canada that without a bailout they would pull all their production out of Canada. I say to that DO IT AND DONT BRING ANOTHER PIECE OF SHIT CHRYSLER TO THIS COUNTRY AGAIN! MAKE ALL CHRYSLER PRODUCTS ILLEGAL IN CANADA who laughs now
Gm failed because of greed period. This started during the reagan years, read a fucking book. Theses CEO's have been killing their companies, workers, and this country for years. The workers don't desing the cars. Do you know how many cars Gm gets to sale in korea .Only 6,000 year, while they sale 600,000 over here. So much for free trade right. No wonder why were ranked 47 in education too many people want to have a beer with the president.
You people really think republicans gave a damn about this contry. I mean where have you guys been for the last 30 years. I may only be 22 years old but if you read history .You can see what the republicans have done to this country. What's going to happen once honda, nissan, bmw, mercedes decides to leave the south. Ever thought about that...
I agree, about republicans, they're assholes,, they're as bad as the democrats. Sure democrats love this country, but unfortunately they love it like the bad uncle who likes to take america swimming too often. The fact is you cannot stop companies from failing. GM is failing because of ridiculous employee expenses. The employees would be much better off, if they broke from the union, and chose to invest their paychecks, instead of a lousy pension. Now they're out of a job.
They are failing cause they've been consistently making lousy quality cars for about the past 30 years. People that were even hard core domestic car buyers finally got fed up and started buying Hondas & Toyotas because they want a car that will last and not be a maintenance nightmare to keep on the road.
well, that's false. My lesabre is sixteen years old, has more than 100k on it, and i have no problems, aside from the occasional rusted brake line. My pappy's olds eighty-eight, has 250k on it and no problems whatsoever. His dodge pickup has the greatest diesel engine on the market, 5.9L cummins turbo, which have been known to go more than a million miles. It's funny you should say that, because most foreign cars have rusted out by now. I am no fan of ford though.
All of these following are a good example of junk they produced. I'm not saying everything they produced was, but all it takes is a few things to seriously tarnish the reputation of a company. 2.3L Vega engine, aluminum block cylinder walls were unsleeved, so they got scoured by the rings and the engine burned oil & lost compression.2.8L Chevy V-6,junk,most notably, their weak bottom end, among other problems.3.1L was a little better, but it had some castings that had problems as well.
Quad 4 Olds engine was notorious for cracking heads (I owned one myself and it had a cracked head). GM diesels that were based off of their gas counterpart engines, the Olds 350 diesel & others had head & head gasket problems to say the least. Ford's 3.8L V-6 had head problems, especially certain years. Dodge used Mitsubishi engines in their cars & minivans, and most of those were junk. On & on.
You seem to forget the 3800 v-6 which has been used for 20 yrs,The 5.1 318 V-8 by chrysler,The 5.0 302V-8 by Ford. The 3.0 V-6 by Ford which I had one and it gave me no trounle at all,2.2 intech by pontiac which there still using, the 2.2 litre in the Ford Focus which evryone I talk to says it is a very good engine.
If your going to tell one side of the story tell all sides of the story.Yes those engines were bad.I to owned a quad 4 and BUT MINE NEVER GAVE ME ANY TROUBLE.The 3800 V-6 is one of the smoothest quietest engines I've ever driven.I've sen one with near 300000 miles on it and still running perfect and that was in a Buick Lesabre.Look at both sides of the story.
How many messages am I expected to type on here?If I listed EVERYTHING good&bad it would take a page or two of messages.I never said, they made all junk. They made enough junk over the years to turn off quite a number of buyers that were unfortunate enough to buy one of their poor quality vehicles,& not one of their more dependable ones,&pour money into them to keep them on the road. One huge downfall is domestic cars, in general, never really had a good running 4 cylinder until the 90's or later.
What you say is true of all manufacturers. I told you I wouldn't back ford. I hate chevy diesels, an the olds diesel set back diesel-in-car technology for years. But I like GM cars and trucks, dodge diesels, and i see Chrysler minivans 20 years old still running with 300k+ on them. Chrysler minivans were some of the finest utilitarian vehicles made. I have a friend who owns and drives daily a first generation dodge caravan. It is rare to see a foreign vehicle more than 20yrs old still operating.
Please give me a list of poor quality engines &/or transmissions that Honda and Toyota produced in the past 30 years. If they pumped out all the junk the big 3 did the past 30 years, they would have never built up the reputation they have today.
That's funny, I see old Honda Civics driving around. As for the rust issue, yes the older ricers were made of compressed rust, but nowadays I think most or all newer and new cars and trucks are treated so they don't rust like they used to.
I suppose you cant really judge an entire corporation by a few bad products, except for the trabant. I just prefer a car like my lesabre which is easy to work on, highly reliable, and floats over rough roads, compared to a sub-compact which are a bitch just to change the oil, ride rough as hell, not to mention the extra cost to ship a replacement part.
Don't forget CEO ridiculous salaries, plus bonus. Breaking from the union would be a bad idea. If they did, all the mexican immigrants would apply and work for little of nothing, then just go back to mexico. Not only that they make their current employees work for $14 an hr. There would be big wedge between rich and poor, not much for the middle class. That would be less money going back into the economy cause the rich wouldn't spend enough to the equivalent to match all the middle class.
No, I was just making a point. Let me ask you this, what if someone offered your boss to do your job for a less wage and he said so long to ya? Would you really want someone to come in and take your job for less money?
No, but it's not about want. If you are a productive skilled employee, your boss is not likely to fire you. If your job is shoveling shit, your boss is likely to try to find the cheapest labor he/she can. You can't blame him/her for that. I'm self employed by the way.
I would hope the stockholders will vote for the resignation of all these incompetent CEO's COO's and especially CFO's of GM, Chrysler and FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily). Let them go under -
Yes!.There are 5000+ autoworkers & suppliers in my Ohio commnity.UAW workers are the top of income chain;if you cut our pay the grapefruit we spend in our communities becomes oranges.Proportionally, workers in other industries are no longer taking in the grapefruit profits so they now spend nectarines.UAW workers aren't shopping or eating out as much, so Food Service and Retail workers that use to spend nectarines can now only spend plums. Finally, plumb tax revenue,is now just cherry & grapes.
Labor and legacy costs are %10 of over-all costs. Pay attention. The UAW is needed to forcefully extract excessive profits and bonuses from Corporate America and circulate those dollars more reasonably in a way that helps America's economical bottom line. You don't here many talking about CEO's 15 million dollar salaries. We're a slow, mildly retarded and stingy country. We need universal health care like Canada and FRance. Then GM won't have the healh care duty.
The only problem with universal health care is that say if you need a operation, it could take months before you come up on the list for the operation. Sometimes you don't have months.
lol..typical American thinking the rest of the world is behind. In Canada, if you need emergency surgery, it's done right away. I needed my appendix out, it was done the next day.
That's in Canada. I saw news report about Russia where people had to wait. That was a apendex a 45 minute procedure. Take something that requires a specialist and more people having them and you'll have to wait. Heart surgury for example. It just depends on the situation.
First of all don't compare canada to russia. I have known alot of people that have had problems from cancer to heart disease and every one of them has always been treated promptly. Of course there are the odd instances where they do fuck up though.
actually now the us gov has already pass this proposal, 15 billion dollars will flow to the big 3 like nothing ever happened at all, not you americans detest this, it's unfair to the reat of the world. these trusts finally get a good excuse to open their mouth for amount of money.
What you don't know you anti american asshole is that if we loose the big three the results will be catostrophic and america will never recover.Than we'll be at the mercy of foriegn cars. And if they suddenly hate us they can say fuck you americans we won't sell you cars.Than we'll be fucked.
But than again dick heads like you don't care if 2 million americans loose there jobs.If all that is left is foreign cars and if the scene changes later and these countries begin to hate us enuff to go to war we will fall as a nation and have no industry to fall back on like we did with car makers in ww2.
You want proof of this you anti american prick.Look at what happen to the south during the civil war. They had no industry to rely on.The north eventually kicked there ass.Industry didn't come to the south untill about the end of the 19th century.
All I've ever owned was american cars and the only one I ever had that was junk was a Ford Tarrus.I'v owned buicks, chryslers, and the best one was a Ford Crown Victoria. The softest riding car I ever owned. The only trouble that car ever gave me was the exhaust needed to be replaced.Go fuck your self you anti american. And that goes for all you people who buy foriegn cars. You are sucking jobs right out of this country.
BULLSHIT! FUCKING BULLSHIT! And all those bankrupted companies you mention ass wad didn't have nearly the power the big three have. Honda? FUCK HONDA. Honda quaitly (along with Toyota) has been going south. GUESS WHAT! Ford made 100 Million $ earlier this year. The reason for is hurting is because the banks fucked everyone up. Ford quailty is = to that of Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THE LIES.
The INCOMPETENT Upper Management of the Big 3 should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY! then move down the chain... QUALITY CONTROL MANAGER (What QUALITY? American Cars are CRAP!)
Don't blame the union auto workers for the years of bad business decisions the CEO's made at the Top. GM purchased Saab and never made a profit with that car line. That's just one of the many bad decisions. If you think the union auto workers are over paid, Just look at the pay scale of GM's top 200 officers over the years. The big 3 auto companies will be profitable if they restructure properly and get rid of the dead wood at the top. They will then be able pay back that loan.
Congress WILL GIVE $25 BILLION OF YOUR TAX DOLLARS NOW. And another $25 BILLION next year and the next year. If they CANT sell cars for years how will they pay back taxpayers money?
They LOST hundred of millions in revenue each year, b/c they have not and are still not able to sell cars for several decades now. American cars can not compete with foreigner cars, b/c of low quality, manufacturing costs; also due to higher taxes, OSHA, environmental regulations and the UNION.
Lol seriously...whoever thought of paying someone to sell me a car? They've been selling crappy cars for years, and i've never had to give them any taxpayer dollars to do it
She's an idiot! All auto workers and retires are also taxpayers, they still pay into the system. She does't talk to much about the 700 billion dollar bailout to the financial institutions that congress just handed over without any remorse. If the auto companies goes under, then your job will too. This country will collapse.
Agreed and I don't like the idea of the gov't getting involved but we are down to "the lesser of two evils." Also, this isn't about a company blowing it. This is about a major US industry in crisis as a result of the entire US economy being in crisis. When millions of people lose their jobs, there will nothing "graceful" about these companies fading away. This isn't just about 3 companies, it's about their thousands of suppliers, too.
Actually we are preparing to give money to the greater of two evils. We let the Automakers go out of business and then I know from the ashes someone will pick up the peices and create a better company here. IT is only a matter of time. We need more efficient vehicles going into the future. Not more heavy gas guzziling Van's and SUV's. Fuel efficiency is important. The Automakers forgot and went bigger and with more useless frills. Who need's TV's in their car with handheld PlayStations?
And who is going to supply the parts for those new companies when all of the suppliers have gone out of business? I'm working for one of those new companies right now and we are having a hell of a time getting suppliers to even want to do business with us.
There has always been a need for machine work on all kinds of devices. The companies that produce the parts will convert and retool to make new parts. It has happened before. WW1 and WW2. It is possible to retool an entire industry in a few months. You will just have to get used to the changes that will come. Whatever they may be. American Inginuity isn't down the tubes yet. Just you wait. Once these bad automakers go down someone will take their place. Accept the changes. Don't stand in the way
The new American car companies that are getting into position to take their place are planning to purchase most of the parts and build the vehicles overseas. Our economy will have to sink much lower before it's cost effective to bring that work back here. We'll see what happens. Congress has agreed to help out, to a degree. I don't think Ford, GM, Chrysler need to go away, but they will need to make a lot of painful changes in order to compete. Too bad the entire market is in the shitter, though
You guys know this is a generated crisis right!!! The government is doing this on purpose and 95% of the people believe what the governments tell you.
WAKEEE UPPPPP!!!!!!
ALL of you immediately, I live in holland but I care for all of you people in america.
Go to alexjones channel for info!!
He has all insights and info about government conspiracy. This is not a joke your lifes are on stake right now. 216 concentration camps are build not for fun.
Point is US auto manufactures are becoming modern dinosaurs. Their vehicles are crap and specific to US consumers who are waking up to real world economics; cars are too fuel thirsty and expensive to run in a recession. Capitalism means shit now as Government adopts socialist policies to bail out these twats.
All automakers sales are down. GM continues to outsell Toyota and Honda. Still gonna try the tired old "US cars are crap, BS?" This is a result of an economy in crisis, not poor quality or gas guzzlers.
As far as "bailout" ... once again, tired old crap. This is loans, not just handing over cash.
They are crappy and poor quality. When you look at the lack of efficiency on their major working parts like their engine. High on Horse power low on efficiency. When the Automakers fail it will be because they suck. Plain and Simple. And believe me we could loan the money and they will still fail.
Perception is reality. Never mind the great strides the entire industry has taken. Never mind that you point out there exists an engine that is high on horsepower and low on efficiency. You are referring to, what, the hemi? Those engines are not in every US car. There are plenty of efficient US cars on the road. I believe you that the potential for failure still exists with the loans. But it's a lower potential. Their demise will drag us ALL into a depression.
Hemi. Vortec V-8. Worked on V-6 all are horrible on efficiency. But not only that but the vehicle weight is way too high in most vehicles. Their are some things that the individual on the road can controll like maintaining their vehicle properly and pumping up their tires but the biggest problems start at manufacturing. I bought a car in 2001 that still has 41 mpg fuel efficiency. The car makers have yet to build a non-hybrid vehicle that does much better then that. THEY DON'T DESERVE THE MONEY.
Outsells but has higher cost and Low Vehicle Efficiency. People are not going to like the automakers collapsing but that is what they must do. Like all other businesses too fat to think. It happens all over the world. It will happen Here. It is a change and change is always painful. Fighting for the Automakers is like trying to Save the Dinosaurs. You are already too late. IF we bail them out I can assure you it will hurt the American people by trillions.
THEY ARE DINOSAURS. I agree. They should have died out a long time ago. Their are better companies ready to take their place. Lord knows that the economy can't stand a vacuum for very long.
NO. We will not be fucked. We will go into depression any way with or without the bail out. It is a matter of bad Monatary policy. We have been running on Fiat money for too long. We have been involved in every war since WW2. The waring hasn't made us any safer. Now the government chooses to spy on us (Patriot and The So called Homeland Defence Acts). We are moving in a communist/fascist direction and have been for a long time(8 years). We need to recognize it and stop it before it gets worse.
I think the point that some of you are missing is that they need money to get through a few months, until new contracts kick in. If GM survives until next year when the contract kicks in, they will have enough money to be fine on their own.
Trouble is a lot of people don't bother with facts, and like to make judgements on partial pictures they get from some news source without a lot of car industry knowledge. Seriously, WTF do you think FOX or CNN actually know about car companies? Not Much.
The 1st step to profitability is to bust the union and the lavish pay and retirement packages. We live in a Global economy and the Big-3 need to realize this is'nt the 1950s and 60s when Detroit iron was king.
"Ponzi scheme"? What about all these banks being bailed out. They were selling structured MBSs. That's almost a ponzi scheme by definition. GM is a company that actually makes something -- a good thing to have when the economy tanks.
We do build more fuel efficient cars, some of them run on diesel. But Americans still think diesel is bad while Europe and other parts of the world have embraced it.
you know what, in the end theres only one real question to ask. Should the consumer (the American taxpayer) really be responsible for bailing out a company that we don't even own? I mean seriously, they want us to buy their vehicles, and support the company as a whole. I also believe that its ridiculous that the retired employees healthcare benefits are also being asked for in the loan. Isn't it their fault because of outdated/non-fuel efficent suvs/trucks? its no wonder why their in debt
And yet the number 1 top sell automobile in the US is still the Ford F150. Number 3 is the Chevy Silverado. This goes way deeper than the Big 3 catering to the demand for trucks/suv's.
Let's not forget the Federal Government offering large tax incentives for the SUV/Large truck market for years. Lower taxes = increased/ inflated demand = greater supply. The US government gave no incentive to consumer or manufacturer for fuel efficient vehicles. Now, in hindsight, we blame the company for matching the demand created by the government?
How are the trucks/suvs outdated? Have ya seen or heard of the Chevy Tahoe/Cadillac Escalade Hybrid? Since when has a Hybrid become outdated..? What would all the american Farmers, contractors, landscapers, etc..drive if the big three were gone? How about all our police fleet, ambulance, taxi even? What about my trains here in NY? Hybrid GM motors on them. Some boats use Gm motors too.
CNN did a short news listing re: Ford and GM's contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York and Washington after 911, the findings are as follows:Ford- $10 million plus matching employee contributions,GM-$10 million plus matching employee contributions,Chrysler- $10 million. Volkswagen-$2 million,Hyundai- $300,000 then audi, bmw, fiat, Mitsubushi, HONDA, nissan Porsche,Subaru,Suzuki and Toyota-Nothing!! Keep this information in mind. I believe we should not forget things like this
I'm about sick of seeing nothing but huge trucks and suvs driving the same roads as I do at night, and I can't even see the traffic lights or traffic ahead of them. They are a plague and disease on our roads. There is no telling how many deaths are a result of such unneeded vehicles on the roads today. I only wish the big 3 could go back to making cars people actually want to drive. I myself, and my friends, all drive hondas with over 200k miles on them. Mine has 324k and still drives great
Obviously that first dumbfuck doesn't know how the BIG 3 effects the country. God, that guy is such a fucking moron. Drive a Hyundai? go fuck yourself
EVERY OPPORTUNITY? are you sure? Japan and Germany have some form of nationalized healthcare, thus reducing healthcare expenses for Toyota, VW, etc. Those countries also have energy policies that keep gas prices high which change the consumption habits of their people increasing demand for more fuel efficient vehicles, thus driving innovation to build hybrids, etc. GM, Ford and Chrysler compete against countries not companies. It's time our government supports its auto companies too.
Fiat monetary system and over leveraging - not surplus productivity - has allowed Europe (and the USA) to support their national health care systems. That is coming to an end as the economies of the world absorb this. It is unjust to force me to pay financial debts for another person, no matter what the purpose. GM is insolvent, and should be forced by the government to sell off assets (including it's brands) to pay down it's obligations... GM shldNOT engage the government in PICKING MY POCKET.
If GM liquidates, you'll end up paying more than if it gets a bridge loan today. GM is integrated into the US economy and with a liquidation there will be untold billions of lost corporate taxes, lost worker income taxes and pension obligations handed over to the Federal government. Who's going to pay that? This is not just for GM, Ford and Chrysler but other companies that go bankrupt as a result. At least if the Big 3 are alive, you have a chance to get your money back.
In 1979, Lee Iaccoca volunteered to get paid $1 a year until Crysler turned a profit. You get the CEOs and Execs of these companies to make similar agreements and I would approve a bail out.
Thanks for some facts. I believe the figure now is that 1/3 of suppliers in Detroit have gone bankrupt. Losing the US auto industry wil have major impact on the entire US economy and our tax dollars will go to unemployment and welfare. Our government should be doing everything it can to keep the industry afloat.
The US govt has been supporting the Auto Industry, by keeping gas prices low and ensuring legal loopholes for the Big 3 to create gas guzzling behemoths that are so bad they only have a market in America.
The Europeans & Japanese can sell cars anywhere in the world, their workforce is flexible so that the Honda plant in Alabama can build any car in the Honda fleet with litle or no extra training or retooling.
Supporting the auto industry by keeping gas prices low? Is this to keep demand high for gas guzzlers? Because that's what it did. If the government had the balls to raise gas taxes years ago, the American public wouldn't have such high demand for SUVs and trucks while it would increase demand for smaller, fuel efficient cars. This would increase prices for small cars, decrease prices for large vehicles and the Big 3 would have adapted to the market and today's crises would have been avoided.
The auto industry lobbied to stop regulation, the govt could have forced the industry to build clean fuel efficient cars, instead the US automakers won and pumped out large SUV's that are categorised as trucks and dont need to comply with the more rigid safety codes of cars.
Ideally now the Govt should take a stake in the Big 3 as equity for its investment, help the industry recover then sell its stake in 3-5 years for a profit.
It's un-American to wish the demise of the Big 3 ... yes, they have their problems, but they can be worked out and bring American manufacturing and innovation back to the forefront where it belongs. Besides, the Big 3 will bring the their profitability plans to Congress and they WILL get the money because it's the right thing for America. If you don't like that or think that's not right, then you and Jonathan H, that "howdy doody" looking mother fucker, can suck it.
Is it not also UN-AMERICAN to run an underachieving enterprise and expect a tax-payer hand-out to make up for one's own pure incompetency?
Japan and Germany make better cars, period. Which is odd when you recollect that 60 years ago their factories were RUBBLE!!! The big 3 have had EVERY OPPORTUNITY to stay on top and be the leader in innovation... however they've allowed the foreign market to dictate what the next automotive technologies would be and they've been lagging behind ever since.
I think the Govt is also to blame, it took money from the Automakers and ensured fuel efficeincy & lower pollution were not mandatory, it allowed the Automakers to build dangerous cars that would never pass the stringent health & safety laws in europe.
The Europeans & Japanese have innovated and built cars for a global market.
Rubble? Are you fucking high? My friend has got WWII era Mercedes and it's an engineering masterpiece even by today's standards. In fact it's so complicated that it took him 2 years to put it together and it haven't gone wrong since then.
BINGO!... Didn't they just cry "fire" with the financial bailout? Put your hands up! We need to buy these worthless mortgage securities, or the economy will crash!... oh, never mind, we aren't going to do that now. (but the money has not been returned to the taxpayers, has it?) I thought they were going to buy those "assets" and actually make money on them. WE WILL BAIL OUT the automakers, even tho voters DON'T want it, and it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
You know what? Give the money to the workers, not the management. People of other states came to the aid of Louisiana when we were hit by storms. Government denied us and did a very very poor job of distributing money. Some of those in need got nothing, and some of those with no damage ripped off government. This is a sign of our oppressions government has put on us, but we do not see. But we need to help the slaves, they are like us. We are the working class for the rich. How's freedom ring now?
You know what? Don't buy guns or ammo, just go buy yourself some good walking shoes, a nice thick card board box, and a hot meal. Let them have it all, even the land, because when they die, they can't take any of it with them. All they can take with them is what they concidered successful in life, and realize none of it ever really mattered anyway. This is when reality will set in for them all. When they see what they created.
Over half of our country's kids are on drugs, our prisons are full because of bussiness deals for tax payers money. Our medical treatment and insurances are so high noone can afford them, we don't have the education because we can't afford it and they needed to keep us dumb so they COULD take advantage of us. Its sad.. people self medicate to cope and are arrested for doing so. Yet we don't see who oppresses us. Find the oppressors and you find your culprit. We can figure that much out.
ALL because of greedy government, big bussiness and those who hoarde money for the sake of being called successful. Wow. Who will really pay for these crimes? The poor and middle class who can't run. But the lower classes who were abused will die while being judged by other countries when they invade us because the other countries fail to see the rich, and greedy are responsible. Its meant to look that way though. I'm white, but the white bussinessman has sold out everyone he could. Disgrace!
Wow, gas goes up, people stop driving and buying gas, or stop buying cars, big car companies collaps, next is oil companies, they sell their oil overseas, government takes a huge cut in taxes and collaps, unable to support government jobs, while we're already in debt, another country invades ameria after we pissed off so many people claiming to be the superpower. Hmmm
Liquidate, buy the biggest guns you can, all the ammo you can, and locate the real culprits before they escape with tax money.
What do you do for a living and exactly what do you drive??? You probably used you mommas computer here to write this shit. Grab your blanky and bottle and crawl back into your crib. SB
You're an idiot. Go ahead keep buying your GM/Chrysler/Fords if it makes you feel patriotic. It's just plain stupid, cause you wont get a compbrable Cost of Ownership as you would with Hondas and Toyotas.
screw you assholes. be carefull what you wish for. i will never drive a POS honda. im an american and i DRIVE A CAVALIER. 2.2L great on gas, as every bit as good as your "honda"
hey nice editing...let the auto industry fail and see how 1-7 jobs in america are negatively effected...michigan is the petrie dish of how america will look...it's called unemployment. it's not just about the plant workers, it's about the communities near those plants and those around the suppliers, too. ever hear of buickcity and flint in michigan? ever see rodger and me? rent it. BTW, it's a LOAN not a bailout! The money gets paid back!
At least the laidoff UAWs will find working for Honda and Toyota most of thier cars use the same bolts to fasten on non-essitenal parts. Please, just let the UAW goons rot no to taxpayer handouts at the expense barely getting by.
You import lovers crack me up. What a joke you all are.Give Toyota a 100,000 and they'll be bombproof. Toyota recalled more cars than they sold in 05/06. The Tundra, a full size truck, isn't even 5-star crash rated. They are not as infallible as people think. But because most people here get their education from media, including TV and that unbiased "consumer reports", you think anything out of Japan is better. Most of you import loving fags are from California. I hope your state burns up.
Whoa, buddy. I know you are mad because your country can't even produce a single good car and now those Big 3 are facing bankruptcy.
Consumer Reports is based on the actual consumer ratings. Do you know what kind of ratings Mercedes gets in CR? Most of their lineups get Much worse than avrage which is the lowest a car can get. And yet, people buy them, why? Because of prestige.
And when they get sick of those Euro junk? They drive Lexus. Who would drive a Buick? Or Chevy? Simple.

Roushfan5 1 year ago
This loud mouth that drives a POS honda seems to forget that the auto manufactures like Packard never reached the "Big Three" level of production. Furthermore we had other manufacturing jobs (both other car manufactures, and other industries. Now with companies outsourcing jobs by the thousands we need every manufacturing job we can get.

thanks for pointing me to this 13andrich...looking back on it, I'd say they nailed it.

Its about time the government sided with the middle class and not the hedge fund managers that ran up housing and gasoline pieces that contributed to the financial crisis.
The government needs to put the collar back on the financial industry!

i've been working at shops my whole life and noticed that, from a mechanics point of view, every car is bad in their own ways. hondas with their electrical/computer problems, ford "exploders" with shitty ball joints, etc etc. but you know as much as i do, that 90% of american drivers just don't know how to properly take care of their cars. a lead foot and late oil changes. i love cars too much. i really hope GM figures something out, they have until the end of march to do so

Both partys SUCK but its a case of lesser of two evils. The republican have had 8 years to turn things around and I for one can say I was better off 8 years ago.

Like FFS, the frames for the silverado are made in Kitchener, Ontario, by no not GM, not ford, not chrysler, not even Mercedes BMW or Audi.
They are made by a small company called BUDD Canada
Yes, you didnt know that.
A GM is an assembly of outsourced NON-GM parts
Thats how lazy they are.
All they do is tighten a bolt with an impact dangling from the cieling as a car floats by on the assembly line
Hell they might as well bring a lawn chair with them.
mattmatt115 3 years ago
Budd never made the silverado frame. They only made the frame for the GM 360 product.
And by the way, ALL of the car companies outsource their parts. It's the way the industry operates and always has.
As far as parts coming from Canada, read up on the Auto Pact.

beachbums150 3 years ago

Hello!! GM doesnt make its own parts dip shit
Yes, we ARE down here my friend!

That piece of shit Toyota is antiamerican!
So what?

ALL the profits go back to japan huh?
So these AMERICANS working at say, one of Toyotas plants in the USA aren't being paid right, their income is being sent to a family in Japan?
This is what you are suggesting when you say ALL the profits go right to japan.
If this were true, then simply Toyota would be building cars in the USA using americans as slaves, beating them forcing them to make cars. Because you know, their pay cheques (a direct result of Toyota profits) aren't spent in the USA...

Dblock7185 3 years ago
I agree, about republicans, they're assholes,, they're as bad as the democrats. Sure democrats love this country, but unfortunately they love it like the bad uncle who likes to take america swimming too often. The fact is you cannot stop companies from failing. GM is failing because of ridiculous employee expenses. The employees would be much better off, if they broke from the union, and chose to invest their paychecks, instead of a lousy pension. Now they're out of a job.
mortson978 3 years ago

2.3L Vega engine, aluminum block cylinder walls were unsleeved, so they got scoured by the rings and the engine burned oil & lost compression.2.8L Chevy V-6,junk,most notably, their weak bottom end, among other problems.3.1L was a little better, but it had some castings that had problems as well.
packrat76 3 years ago
Quad 4 Olds engine was notorious for cracking heads (I owned one myself and it had a cracked head). GM diesels that were based off of their gas counterpart engines, the Olds 350 diesel & others had head & head gasket problems to say the least. Ford's 3.8L V-6 had head problems, especially certain years. Dodge used Mitsubishi engines in their cars & minivans, and most of those were junk. On & on.
packrat76 3 years ago
You seem to forget the 3800 v-6 which has been used for 20 yrs,The 5.1 318 V-8 by chrysler,The 5.0 302V-8 by Ford. The 3.0 V-6 by Ford which I had one and it gave me no trounle at all,2.2 intech by pontiac which there still using, the 2.2 litre in the Ford Focus which evryone I talk to says it is a very good engine.
discovery2245 3 years ago
If your going to tell one side of the story tell all sides of the story.Yes those engines were bad.I to owned a quad 4 and BUT MINE NEVER GAVE ME ANY TROUBLE.The 3800 V-6 is one of the smoothest quietest engines I've ever driven.I've sen one with near 300000 miles on it and still running perfect and that was in a Buick Lesabre.Look at both sides of the story.
discovery2245 3 years ago
How many messages am I expected to type on here?If I listed EVERYTHING good&bad it would take a page or two of messages.I never said, they made all junk. They made enough junk over the years to turn off quite a number of buyers that were unfortunate enough to buy one of their poor quality vehicles,& not one of their more dependable ones,&pour money into them to keep them on the road. One huge downfall is domestic cars, in general, never really had a good running 4 cylinder until the 90's or later.
packrat76 3 years ago
The early model 4 speed overdrive transmissions & even some of the later 2nd and 3rd gen. ones from the Big 3 were often problematic.
packrat76 3 years ago

If mexicans are willing to do a better job for a lower price, why shouldn't they be hired. Do you just hate mexicans or something?

Halo2100 3 years ago
No, but it's not about want. If you are a productive skilled employee, your boss is not likely to fire you. If your job is shoveling shit, your boss is likely to try to find the cheapest labor he/she can. You can't blame him/her for that. I'm self employed by the way.

TruthBehindComedy 3 years ago

Capitalism is survival of the fittest.
When a company blows it they should have the dignity to fade away gracefully.
RushmoreGerleve 3 years ago
Agreed and I don't like the idea of the gov't getting involved but we are down to "the lesser of two evils." Also, this isn't about a company blowing it. This is about a major US industry in crisis as a result of the entire US economy being in crisis. When millions of people lose their jobs, there will nothing "graceful" about these companies fading away. This isn't just about 3 companies, it's about their thousands of suppliers, too.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
Actually we are preparing to give money to the greater of two evils. We let the Automakers go out of business and then I know from the ashes someone will pick up the peices and create a better company here. IT is only a matter of time. We need more efficient vehicles going into the future. Not more heavy gas guzziling Van's and SUV's. Fuel efficiency is important. The Automakers forgot and went bigger and with more useless frills. Who need's TV's in their car with handheld PlayStations?
NoogLeader 3 years ago
And who is going to supply the parts for those new companies when all of the suppliers have gone out of business? I'm working for one of those new companies right now and we are having a hell of a time getting suppliers to even want to do business with us.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
There has always been a need for machine work on all kinds of devices. The companies that produce the parts will convert and retool to make new parts. It has happened before. WW1 and WW2. It is possible to retool an entire industry in a few months. You will just have to get used to the changes that will come. Whatever they may be. American Inginuity isn't down the tubes yet. Just you wait. Once these bad automakers go down someone will take their place. Accept the changes. Don't stand in the way
NoogLeader 3 years ago
The new American car companies that are getting into position to take their place are planning to purchase most of the parts and build the vehicles overseas. Our economy will have to sink much lower before it's cost effective to bring that work back here. We'll see what happens. Congress has agreed to help out, to a degree. I don't think Ford, GM, Chrysler need to go away, but they will need to make a lot of painful changes in order to compete. Too bad the entire market is in the shitter, though

Point is US auto manufactures are becoming modern dinosaurs. Their vehicles are crap and specific to US consumers who are waking up to real world economics; cars are too fuel thirsty and expensive to run in a recession. Capitalism means shit now as Government adopts socialist policies to bail out these twats.
bacaca88 3 years ago
All automakers sales are down. GM continues to outsell Toyota and Honda. Still gonna try the tired old "US cars are crap, BS?" This is a result of an economy in crisis, not poor quality or gas guzzlers.
As far as "bailout" ... once again, tired old crap. This is loans, not just handing over cash.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
They are crappy and poor quality. When you look at the lack of efficiency on their major working parts like their engine. High on Horse power low on efficiency. When the Automakers fail it will be because they suck. Plain and Simple. And believe me we could loan the money and they will still fail.
NoogLeader 3 years ago
Perception is reality. Never mind the great strides the entire industry has taken. Never mind that you point out there exists an engine that is high on horsepower and low on efficiency. You are referring to, what, the hemi? Those engines are not in every US car. There are plenty of efficient US cars on the road. I believe you that the potential for failure still exists with the loans. But it's a lower potential. Their demise will drag us ALL into a depression.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
Hemi.
NoogLeader 3 years ago
Outsells but has higher cost and Low Vehicle Efficiency. People are not going to like the automakers collapsing but that is what they must do. Like all other businesses too fat to think. It happens all over the world. It will happen Here. It is a change and change is always painful. Fighting for the Automakers is like trying to Save the Dinosaurs. You are already too late. IF we bail them out I can assure you it will hurt the American people by trillions.
NoogLeader 3 years ago
THEY ARE DINOSAURS. I agree. They should have died out a long time ago. Their are better companies ready to take their place. Lord knows that the economy can't stand a vacuum for very long.
NoogLeader 3 years ago
yeah if they go out of business, over 3 million people will lose their jobs, and well all be fucked. yay! for the next great depression!!
jboidaman99 3 years ago
NoogLeader 3 years ago
I think the point that some of you are missing is that they need money to get through a few months, until new contracts kick in. If GM survives until next year when the contract kicks in, they will have enough money to be fine on their own.
Trouble is a lot of people don't bother with facts, and like to make judgements on partial pictures they get from some news source without a lot of car industry knowledge. Seriously, WTF do you think FOX or CNN actually know about car companies? Not Much.

We do build more fuel efficient cars, some of them run on diesel. But Americans still think diesel is bad while Europe and other parts of the world have embraced it.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
you know what, in the end theres only one real question to ask. Should the consumer (the American taxpayer) really be responsible for bailing out a company that we don't even own? I mean seriously, they want us to buy their vehicles, and support the company as a whole. I also believe that its ridiculous that the retired employees healthcare benefits are also being asked for in the loan. Isn't it their fault because of outdated/non-fuel efficent suvs/trucks? its no wonder why their in debt
rreggiebryant1 3 years ago
And yet the number 1 top sell automobile in the US is still the Ford F150. Number 3 is the Chevy Silverado. This goes way deeper than the Big 3 catering to the demand for trucks/suv's.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
Let's not forget the Federal Government offering large tax incentives for the SUV/Large truck market for years. Lower taxes = increased/ inflated demand = greater supply. The US government gave no incentive to consumer or manufacturer for fuel efficient vehicles. Now, in hindsight, we blame the company for matching the demand created by the government?
knifefight69 3 years ago
Who was getting tax incentives from the Federal Gov't to buy trucks and suv's? Are you talking about the old "we'll pay your sales tax" gimmick?
The really sad thing is everyone is bashing only the US automakers when Toyota and Honda's sales are down just as much.
So, once again, this is not just about trucks/suv's nor is it about Japanese cars being better.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
How are the trucks/suvs outdated? Have ya seen or heard of the Chevy Tahoe/Cadillac Escalade Hybrid? Since when has a Hybrid become outdated..? Volkswagen-$2 million,Hyundai- $300,000 then audi, bmw, fiat, Mitsubushi, HONDA, nissan Porsche,Subaru,Suzuki and Toyota-Nothing!! Keep this information in mind. I'm about sick of seeing nothing but huge trucks and suvs driving the same roads as I do at night, and I can't even see the traffic lights or traffic ahead of them. It's time our government supports its auto companies too.
dino4521b 3 years ago
Fiat monetary system and over leveraging - not surplus productivity - has allowed Europe (and the USA) to support their national health care systems. That is coming to an end as the economies of the world absorb this. It is unjust to force me to pay financial debts for another person, no matter what the purpose. GM is insolvent, and should be forced by the government to sell off assets (including it's brands) to pay down it's obligations... GM shldNOT engage the government in PICKING MY POCKET.
engine2truck6 3 years ago
If GM liquidates, you'll end up paying more than if it gets a bridge loan today. GM is integrated into the US economy and with a liquidation there will be untold billions of lost corporate taxes, lost worker income taxes and pension obligations handed over to the Federal government. Who's going to pay that? This is not just for GM, Ford and Chrysler but other companies that go bankrupt as a result. At least if the Big 3 are alive, you have a chance to get your money back.
dino4521b 3 years ago
In 1979, Lee Iaccoca volunteered to get paid $1 a year until Crysler turned a profit. You get the CEOs and Execs of these companies to make similar agreements and I would approve a bail out.
essayant2 3 years ago
Thanks for some facts. I believe the figure now is that 1/3 of suppliers in Detroit have gone bankrupt. Losing the US auto industry wil have major impact on the entire US economy and our tax dollars will go to unemployment and welfare. Our government should be doing everything it can to keep the industry afloat.
VenisonFajitas 3 years ago
The US govt has been supporting the Auto Industry, by keeping gas prices low and ensuring legal loopholes for the Big 3 to create gas guzzling behemoths that are so bad they only have a market in America.
The Europeans & Japanese can sell cars anywhere in the world, their workforce is flexible so that the Honda plant in Alabama can build any car in the Honda fleet with litle or no extra training or retooling.
xdir 3 years ago
Supporting the auto industry by keeping gas prices low? Is this to keep demand high for gas guzzlers? Because that's what it did. If the government had the balls to raise gas taxes years ago, the American public wouldn't have such high demand for SUVs and trucks while it would increase demand for smaller, fuel efficient cars. This would increase prices for small cars, decrease prices for large vehicles and the Big 3 would have adapted to the market and today's crises would have been avoided.
dino4521b 3 years ago
The auto industry lobbied to stop regulation, the govt could have forced the industry to build clean fuel efficient cars, instead the US automakers won and pumped out large SUV's that are categorised as trucks and dont need to comply with the more rigid safety codes of cars.
Ideally now the Govt should take a stake in the Big 3 as equity for its investment, help the industry recover then sell its stake in 3-5 years for a profit.
xdir 3 years ago
How much tax payer money did Honda receive in exchange for building that plant in Alabama?
Along with all the other federal and state tax incentives the other transplants received.

If you don't like that or think that's not right, then you and Jonathan H, that "howdy doody" looking mother fucker, can suck it.
dino4521b 3 years ago
Is it not also UN-AMERICAN to run an underachieving enterprise and expect a tax-payer hand-out to make up for one's own pure incompetency?
Japan and Germany make better cars, period. Which is odd when you recollect that 60 years ago their factories were RUBBLE!!! The big 3 have had EVERY OPPORTUNITY to stay on top and be the leader in innovation... however they've allowed the foreign market to dictate what the next automotive technologies would be and they've been lagging behind ever since.
mitchkramah 3 years ago
I think the Govt is also to blame, it took money from the Automakers and ensured fuel efficeincy & lower pollution were not mandatory, it allowed the Automakers to build dangerous cars that would never pass the stringent health & safety laws in europe.
The Europeans & Japanese have innovated and built cars for a global market.

Or Chevy? Simple.
