Somebody fire the string section with their "push-pull" garbage. Can't play no pizzicato triplets while starin at a conductor....listen to the damn hi-hat!
If he wouldn't have become a singer I bet he would have worked a preacher in a church talking bullshit all day. Im glad he became a great soul/funk singer.
One of the great American success stories, he rose from a dirt floor cabin, to world-wide fame, made over 5000 recordings, visited 2 presidents in the White House, entertained the troops in Vietnam, had a career that spanned 6 decades, never publicly bashed his country, was never bitter about doing time, and always told his people to do the right thing.
First heard this in 1968... two years after it was recorded... but it was the same ... raw... heartfelt, ...real... the only time I heard a better version was when he sang it with Pavarotti..... grew up with James... loved him all my life.
