  • Wow, now that is TONE! Awesome playing as well!

  • Is the ext. cabinet input on the amp for 8ohm cabs? I just got a 77, but since it's not labeled I'm being very cautious and not plugging it in until I find out for sure.

  • @trackingtim ermmm...mine is diferent as the Output Transformer is an old Albion replacement which has different impedance taps on it...so you need to look into that...I think Traynors had a low impedance, the Albion has a 16 and an 8, if I remember right, ...anyway, i suggest you hunt on google for the answer as I am not too sure...good luck..all the best...

  • Absolutely beautiful playing! And the tone too, wow! The spiderweb shot cracked me up. I'm refurbishing one of these amps now. I'm a good player but I can't play blues like that. Absolutely beautiful!

  • The normal sounds no different if not brighter than the bright channel. BUT!! Still sounds great. I had the YB-1A but had to sell it when times got bad, I played it more than mY 72 Marshall and I'm sorry I ever sold it but, I did get the head with a 2-12 Peavy cabinet for 200 dollars and sold the head for 475 on Ebay. II had a great 38 Special sound with it untill a "MOUSE" chewed one of the cones to make a nest in the bottom of the cabinet along with BOTH cones from my Musicman 2-10 cab!

  • @grindinglicks I suspect that channel differences are more noticeable lower down on the dial....my Traynor is a lovely amp, I think it's more squishy than a Marshall in some ways, mine doesn't seem to be stock.......great comment from yourself, thank you.

  • Wow that sounds amazing dude. The sustain. At 0:12 was mind blowing. I have a Traynor YSR-1 Custom Reverb. The vintage Traynor stuff is out of this world. Great stuff! Nice playing btw!!!!! Cheers!

  • I was wondering - is there an identifiable name you use for these later models with the slant faceplates? I know there are the really early ones that is just a standard box for the head, then there are the ones with the silver trip/edges, and then there are these. Are these the so-called "rubber bumper" models?

  • @HarryFortyTwo and any others interested... I have this same exact amp, from 1979.

IM LOOKING TO SELL IT! send me a personal message or find me on facebook if youre interested! search my name (Kurtis Alan) from Massachusetts USA

has upgraded diodes and the old flimsy 2prong power cord replaced with a grounded 3prong cord.

  • Hi roy!

Superb playing, of course! Just wondered, if youre based in uk (if thats right) how did you get the yba - ebay from the states?

Or uk based seller? Would be heavily interested since i'm in europe myself. Cheers, harry

  • @HarryFortyTwo - Cheers Harry, appreciated...just keep looking on Ebay and you'll eventually grab one and possibly for a low price...that's how I got mine.......all the best..Roy

  • Your tone makes my amp feel ashamed of itself.

And it should be... Because this is amazing.

  • so ive had this amp for a couple years and never new it had that kind of distortion in the high levels... anyways you could explain to me how this hot plate stuff works?

  • Wow, that's some really nice guitar playing!

    Very nice.

  • @papirockdead Hi Rob..... not sure on that bulb thing..I used to leave the bulb off, I hear hardly any difference when it's on or off and so to me it's arbitrary but THD say "This is part of a noise reduction system that noticeably cuts down the amount of hiss

and hum that reaches the speakers. The light will glow more brightly when you are playing

through an amp set at full output."..good question, Rob....best...R

  • So much for keeping the old Traynors a secret---Nice vid

  • fuuuuuuuhk, no imagine when you retube it!?? jesus!!!!

  • Thanks man, much appreciated...I'm constantly thinking of ideas for an album and one day I'll do it...just for the pleasure of it...I can't remember all the fine details...the mic was probably an sm57 (if not then a c1000) and usually a few inches back from the cab,,,,,,,,I have a joemeek preamp and a REDD 47....I think this was the Meek pre but the REDD is beautiful............good luck and thanks......

  • I'm just blown away. Amazing. Now I'm wondering if my YCS50 can sound like that when turned up, I don't have a hotplate, so I haven't had a chance to do it. What did you use to record this (mic/interface), and what's your mic placement? If you recorded an album, I'd definitely buy it, no hesitation.

  • wow, a 31 year old tube is something

  • No pedals? I am UTTERLY gobsmacked! Great, great tone! (& nice playing, too)

  • Incredible tone - I'm salivating! I have the EXACT same amp as you, a YBA-1 from '78 - but can't ever play past 2-3 on the volume.

It looks like your hotplate is blue - isn't that the 16ohm version? The amp is 8 ohm so I've been looking for the purple one. Any suggestions?

  • @FattStratt Thanks man..this Traynor has an Albion transformer which I believe was fitted close to when the amp was new.... it has 16 ohm and 8 ohm taps.......and my hotplate is 16 ohms....I add that I also use my hotplate on an 8 ohm output ofr a 2x12 cab I recently got and it is fine, I think the mismatch i smore relevant when ur using the hoplate as a load without a cab and/or if you use the THD tone switches (I don't)...shoot THD a message on this issue..they are very helpful...all the best.

  • awesome demo, your playing is superb .reminds me of dave gilmour..

  • simply outstanding....... 8D

  • Killer Tone! Killer Delivery! Heartfelt Blues! What kind of PRS is that? Looks like there is lots of info on the amp but not the axe. More Please!!

  • @Johnnymac426 Hi Man,,, thank you, much appreciated...the axe is a Les Paul R8 with Classic 57's, I think it's a 2001 if my memory serves, i'll have to check.......i flip flop between these and Bareknuckle Mules....cheers

  • this is unbelievable. I've been searching for a yba-1. I have a quick question for you. I'm looking into a yba-1 for shoegaze...and so, I must ask--does this amp take pedals well?

  • @thegreyam It takes pedals VERY well

  • Found one. 1973 Mark-I. Love it. Your vid was an inspiration. Need a Hot Plate now. This thing SCREAMS & CRIES, It'll bring tears to your eyes & make your ears bleed.

  • Looking to finally get one of these. After many, many Fender and Marshall years. Thought I'd check out a few You Tubes. And you've convinced me. Damn Sweet tone. And great job playin.

  • Great tone and tasty playing. I just picked one of these amps up. It's just a matter of time before people realize that these amps were based on a JTM45/Bassman and the prices skyrocket.

  • wow!!!! thats an awesome tone and playing. i have a yba-1 myself and i really like it. always wondered how it would sound with a hotplate.

  • Hey Roy, how far west do you go to gig? Do you ever get to Bristol or swindon? I can probably bring a couple of cars full!

  • hi !!! Im glad I found this video....very nice sounding amp...... couple mods on it............ We had a concert a couple of days a go and the audio dude had one there......and hes offering to sell it to me for 90$.......do you think its a good deal?? Im kind of concern about the way the am has been taken care off though....the guy told me i could use it with bass guitar and electric guitar ..........has any of you tried it with a bass guitar?? how much do you like this amp(stock)

  • @badstardo If the amp is working OK it's a bargain...these amps were designed for bass so you can certainly use it for bass..it just happens to sound great for guitar too...good luck

  • Just about perfect. Kudos!

  • wow, this was great....friggin' tone man...great playing...unreal...makes me practice harder to let loose, stop thinking and just play. and i thought I was loose ..lol...inspiring dude

  • skaboosh, was looking to see how these amps sounded when I stumbled across your video, Listened and half watched while I was chopping onions to make a pasta bake for my family, soon had tears streaming down my face, nothing to do with the onions, your playing is fantastically soulful, touch, feeling and expression, it truly made my day, and although it made me want to buy the amp that I was looking at, I get the feeling that without your fingers I won't make it sound like this:-) Thanks

  • your a great player

  • Hey Roy, thanks for info. Any chance of the backing track? Many thanks

  • Hi Roy,

Just a question about your settings. Are you playing thru' the clean channel with overdrive or the overdrive channel? Thanks

    Rick

  • @rickpkt Thanks Man,,, appreciated.....

both channels on this Bassmaster are clean channels meant for a bass I believe...the tone here is just full volume output valve distortion, .......all the best, R

  • Hi Roy,

Can't stop playing this solo of yours. Exceptional is not an adequate word for it. The tone, feel and atmosphere reminds me of Duane Allman's solo in Boz Scagg's

Loan Me a Dime. I am sure you know it. Another great blues guitarist who died before his time. Hope you go on to make some albums man! You ought to be one of the great bluesman up there. Better than Clapton anytime.

  • Wonderful Blues TONE,Think you've found one of those tones everybody trys to find.Great playing too .Thanks for sharing

  • I have the same amp...love it! The thing is the original owner gave it to a friend who gave it to me...FREE because it was a 'Traynor' and not a Marshall. Good to be me, haha!

I use a jumper between the two channels to give it a little more edge and depending on the type of music, a Boss Super Overdrive.

    Awesome playing brother!

  • @k0sta5 cheers my friend, a little good fortune for you and deservedly so I would bet....I love these quirky amps

  • Hey Roy,

I have a Bugera 333XL. Would love for you to try out the tones with your expert playing. Can't tell the difference with my lousy playing. Very near you so no prob getting here.

  • Roy .......you have many fans here in Seville my man .. everyone keeps emailing me the link to yr YBA 1 demo.. WHAT A SOUND AND PLAYING .... OOOOOOOOGFFFFFFFFFFFFF wonderful..... really really great .. there are very very few people that can do what you do .. I hope you know that !!! all the best Dominick

  • Hey Roy, Your touch and tone are so amazing. Makes me want to cry and laugh with joy at the same time. Wnat is the backing track and where can I get it? I also send you a message by email asking if you give lessons. Would be great if you could reply. Cheers and keep rocking, such a pleasure to hear blues with a real touch!!!

  • Your tone is freaking amazing!!!!!!!! You have bar none one of the best left hand vibratos that I have heard vibratos. You r playing is so expressive.

  • On mine...I have a jumper from the bright channel's High to the Normal's Low and mix both volumes to find a sweet tone.

It also makes it a little grittier for a hard rock sound.

  • I have that exact same amp except mine's not missing the presence (although I don't dial it into my sound...too shrill)

These amps are just as good as any Marshall without breaking the bank. Good to see more out there.

  • Obligatory spider web FTW!!!!!!!! Bro...=)

  • good playing..it sounds fantastic!!

  • You have the best tone, and some of the tastiest playing, I have seen on youtube. Traynor should be endorsing you!

  • Great tone and playing! You noted using a power attenuator? May I ask what brand/model?

  • Thank you. Sure, I use a THD hotplate....

  • Excellent! Tone, technique, I think one of the best I've heard on You tube. Bravo

  • Wow! I have the same amp. Seems like the original wierd filter behind the tonestack has been removed. Do you have a picture of the guts? I love the sound and the playing!!

  • Awsome!! Creamy, dirty, soulfull, makes me want to cry and cheer!!

    What Spkrs you using? Pups?

  • Thanks man...Celestions, G12h...and a Gibson R8 with Gibson Classic 57's, I believe....

  • fk me sideways!! do you play in a band? i would drive a thousand miles to hear you play!!!

  • Thanks Steve

I am a jobbing musician in a duo in pubs playing through a POD...he he..., scraping a living together ..... and I also have a FREE tribute band called ALL RIGHT NOW, but the venues and promoters in this country are very hard to get work from for this fantastic band.....

  • @skaboosh Fantastic Tone! hey you should put some of your band stuff up on here .

  • Just sweet as hell!! Love listening my friend!!!

  • Absolutely Amazing Tone and Roy Smith in Action ,WOW !!!

There is a very unique attraction between You and good

vintage tube amps. . . : ) Like they know that they will sound

their best when You play them. . . Your huge Les Paul Tone

is KILLER , You have to show the world !!! Greets , Gordon

  • Ah, thanks, that's greatly warming......I hope all is good your end....has been a while.....take care...spk soon

    R

  • Awesome, I am very much looking forward to working on my YGM 3 , and looking at these now : ))) peace, enjoy man.

  • is it modded at all? I have a yba-4 that sounds NOTHING like this.

  • 1/. I changed the caps on the centre wiper of the bass control to those Sozos and they are two 103's in parallel, thus .02 uF?? 2/. I sense that the Albion output transformer is a mod done back in '78 ish, perhaps to get more impedance options 3/. a previous owner took out the presence control. I think that's all. Check the Velvet Black Traynor site regarding differences between our amps. All the best.

  • love the playing

  • Thanks Pat...your vids are excellent, I must say....very very cool....
