What a great film! A lot better then the cgi/3d shitfests were getting nowadays! I wouldn't mind seeing this remade as a videogame on a newer console and as a film. Just goes to show you that bigger budget doesn't always mean better. Thumbs up!

The game is better than the movie. The movie was good, but I didn't like it that much. There were some flaws, but all in all, I give it a 7 out of 10.
This was a pretty good watch. I'm glad to have followed the Happy Video Game Nerd's advice by playing the game first (which is amazing). This is such a fascinating concept that movie and game though slightly different followed eachother's story. Thanks for sharing!

The murderous ghost of a serial killer gets off without any punishment or even a remorseful epiphany? Well, at least Yamamura wasn't explicitly condemned to eternal torment.
@FMagl Bhuddist theology isn't like western/abrahamic theology. Basically, while, for example; Christians say there's a devil and demons, so that when christians do evil, they can shift the blame away from themselves onto 'outside' forces. In eastern philosophies, a human is both good and evil, and can pass onto higher forms after releasing that evil, or acheiving some kind of enlightenment, and not really lose any 'part' of themselves
@Xunkun I was under the impression that the Japanese in general are particularly secular in their outlook, turning to religion mainly as inspiration for fiction, but I admit I've never bothered to look into it with any depth. They do commonly draw from Western religion/mythology in anime, manga, and games.
Anyway, Lady Mamiya was a grotesque serial killer with no positive qualities shown, yet she ascends where her victims receive no compensation. However you slice it, that's cosmic cruelty.
@FMagl Yeah, the borrowing from the western religions tends to be straightforward and superficial; like in Zelda series, in the first game, Link's shield *is*, in fact, decorated with a Christian cross, as Link was based on european knights/Crusaders, and in Ocarina of Time the 1.0 and 2.0 versions (all gold cartriges, and some greys), the Gerudo symbol, and some background chating in the fire temple are Muslim-- but not 2.5, cuz of JIHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!
From what I understand of eastern religions, being incarnated as a demon/monster *is* the punishment (as opposed to hell, as being in constant fury is viewed as punishment in itself). A *western* movie that takes this eastern stance of "NO_U.jpg ARE THE DEMONS" is "Jacob's Ladder" (awesome movie, go watch it; "the healing cherub states what I mean" (trying not to spoil it for you)).
But, as an atheist, I can wrap it up with: "it's *religion*: it's *not* gonna be fair or make any fucking sense."
@Xunkun It's a plausible interpretation that Lady Mamiya's ghostly existence was a punishment. I think, though, that we were looking at the trope where the ghost has to be appeased or have its unresolved issues from life dealt with to exorcise it.
I believe that her ascension at the end relates to the themes of motherhood in the movie, and maybe symbolizes Akiko taking a family role with Emi and Kazuo. It's not necessarily meant as a religious statement. The cruelty is possibly an oversight.
Hard to believe "Emi-chan" was actually 26 at the time this movie was filmed. She's actually a singer, and still looks very young, despite being in her late-40's now.
This is a pretty good film and lady mamiya monsterous aperance is proberly one of the coolest things I've seen lately that isn't CGI shit.
lol at the ending how the fudge did kazuo survive lol
This film feels alot more like silent hill movie both films and their respectful games are fantastic. I'm still playing the nes sweet home game right now.
this is the best horror movie ive ever seen and it actually has an ending worth watching now i gotta play th game lady mamiya scare the shit outta me like that was pretty freaky but amazing if they do make an american version i hope its good but i guess well c
This movie inspired me to begin working on a "haunted mansion" type story. I know it sounds like it's overdone, but if the truth be known, there aren't many horror movies or books that involve a spooky old house much anymore.
I might make a few people mad but I'd love to see this movie remade not the game because from what I've heard and seen it's good as it is. As long as they stick to animitronics and not all this cgi this could make for a great remake.

@Peacerator Well, then what DID you have in mind for the ending? In all honesty, I would've done something along similar lines if I was the writer for this movie.
@ZealSeraph Actually, i think they were released on the same day. And since movies generally take longer to make, the game was either based on the movie, or they were co-developed.
@ZealSeraph Or maybe it's a video game based on a movie. They came out literally the same day. I think that they were worked on simultaneously. You have to see the movie and play the game for the whole package.
@Gunmetalhed I heard they were released on the same day. Then again making a movie probably took longer than making a NES-game, so I guess it's the other way around anyway. But anyway, there aren't all that many good video games based on movies either, so that makes me just as amazed.
Very well written. They really don't make horror movies like they used to. Or at least they really don't get appreciated. People really don't know how much they miss.
@SaikyoMog It's odd, though. These days, just because we have digital tech, people think we have to flaunt it outside of video games and minor touch-up work in films. What used to be a challenge is now so easy that someone with a working knowledge of rendering can make a feature length film for next to a billion dollars. I miss the days of simple lighting effects, animatronics and pyrotechnics. Also, so many actors seem like they have no soul when acting. What the hell happened to our actors?
@thedragonb0y Yeah, now it's just people wanting to see gore. Not looking for a good story, that along the way spooks the crap out of you. This, although never made in English, or heard ever heard of by 96% of Americans, just became my favorite horror movie.
@wertests215 Horror can be put in through so many perspectives including gore (gore can be a visual representation of the monster's power and a horrible death will ensue). My problem is the lack of America's diversity. In most of our eyes in our lack of imagination we think there is only one way to make a movie, one way to write a book, one way to make a game. People think every possible one has been made before, but that's wrong. Every single adaptation of every hit known to man has been made.
@thedragonb0y You are right. Final Destination is what was on my mind when I said that but yes - it is America's lack of diversity that gets annoying but there are plenty of movies from here in America that I love. It's just that I wish people here could right stories as good as this!
@wertests215 Well mostly my problem is in the eyes of the audience themselves. I've seen so many movies shot down for really weird and mostly unexplained reasons. Take for example, Paranormal Activity. How in the world were those bad horror movies?
@thedragonb0y Like I said, there are alot of horror movies here that I like but I havent seen that one. I heard it was good, and all my friends said it was good - why the critics didnt like it, I dont know.
@wertests215 It wasn't hated, it was in JAPAN. XDD
We never got this movie, but I'd still know most Americans wouldn't like it. Not to sound mean or anything, but this come from personal experience. The larger majority of American (mostly in this generation) lack diversity and imagination when it come to entertainment ESPECIALLY today. They see a movie like Indiana Jones in this day and age and they will flip at how unrealistic it is.
@thedragonb0y i personally didnt care for those movies, not cause they're scary cuz in my mind they arent but i do give credit where credit is due it made money and thats what movies are supposed to do
It looks as though a few Americans were involved in this project, too! This includes Dick Smith who apparently did the special effects. He also had a hand in a few of Martin Scorsese's films, including "The Godfather" (1 and 2) and"Taxi Driver", as well as "The Exorcist" and David Cronenberg's "Scanners".
It would be amazing too see a remake of this. Both a movie and a game. (mostly a game) I've been a long fan of Resident Evil and I feel privileged to be able to have seen this movie.
And as a movie, it was actually pretty good. Only the Japanese have deformed ghost monsters that shoot lightning.
@SaikyoMog like when taguchi was trying to get through to her as she saw the shadow and then she says "everybody dies", yeah she had to be possessed and also when taguchi also thought that she was still bathing and it was really mamiya. the plot was well focused. i dont blame them for keeping this movie a hush hush :D
@Minan3 Well, I'm not sure how well it did in Japan, but considering when it was made, the US wasn't exactly getting a lot of Japanese horror movie imports....But who knows...Maybe it's a good thing it's not exactly well known...Course, maybe if it was they might remake the movie and even the game... :P
Oh man, this movie was amazing. There's just so much done right in it and they managed to make simple latex costumes really work well. Clever editing and lighting did wonders to hide seems and make it all that much more authentic. There's so much memorable stuff from this. I am going to have to share this with people. Thank you so much for uploading this bit of cinema. I don't even like horror and I loved this.
@lolurfaggot Well, if you liked the movie, you should try out the NES game that was released the same day as the movie... ;)
Of course, you'll want to make sure it's a patched version, since it never came out in the states. You'll see plenty of similarities between the two. Examples being the pitchfork, it's the strongest weapon in the game I think, and it's shown at the end of the movie, and the dress is a hidden item, also seen in the movie. Plenty of things here and there you'll find...
Sweet Home served as the main inspiration behind Resident Evil. The first Resident Evil borrowed many elements from Sweet Home, including the mansion setting, the puzzles, the item inventory management, the emphasis on survival, and even the "door" loading screen..
@dcom94 dont forget scattered notes, in RE 0 you were able to pick up items and drop em off anywhere in the game just like sweet home, also in resident evil 4 and 4 and 5 you have to press buttons or a combo of buttons to randomly survive like in sweet home R1 + R2 and pressing X repeatively is similar to when people fell and needed to press buttons to survive plus avoiding fallen statues because they had a chance of dieing in sweet home,
I remember I was very scared when I saw this movie at the theater. The most impressive thing is the make-up of Mrs.Mamiya's burnt face. I think the design of the make-up is very Japanese-style. Anyway, I appreciate you for uploading this film.
I contacted Nintendo and they said they are going to try to get Sweet Home onto the Virtual Console. I will be starting up a petition soon to get Sweet Home onto the Wii Virtual Console so watch this page for the link!
They did a good job with the game and movie. There's a lot of little things you can see in the movie that are in the game. The dress and the pitchfork for example. You might just watch the movie and not think twice about them, but if you played the game, you'll know the dress is a very good item, and I think the pitchfork is the strongest weapon.
Great effects. I remember seeing this when I was younger in japan at a friends house for a sleepover. All I remembered were certain bits, like the cameraman getting burned in half and the old man squishing the bottle, the shadow bursting the lights... oh and the guy knocking over the gravestones... all those things stuck in my memory, but I never watched it completely till now... thankyou for the upload.
Of course. The movie is quite well done, and the game is really great. I think it's safe to say that Sweet Home was the precursor to the Resident Evil games. Was made by Capcom... ;)
I was looking up the survival horror genre on Wikipedia and it mentioned the Sweet Home NES game that was based on this movie. I Downloaded the patched version of the game and enjoyed playing it and immediately started searching on here for the movie which you so graciously uploaded on here. This movie exceeded all of my expectations and i think we should petition to have the subtitled version released over here, i for one would buy it!
What a great film! A lot better then the cgi/3d shitfests were getting nowadays! I wouldn't mind seeing this remade as a videogame on a newer console and as a film. Just goes to show you that bigger budget doesn't always mean better. Thumbs up!

@retrogaming Funny you should say that, because Nobuko Miyamoto was THE PRODUCER'S WIFE. Nobuko Miyamoto has been in every one of Juzo Itami's films.

@Xunkun I think in general that borrowing from religion and mythology is pretty shallow in entertainment media, culturally embedded concepts aside.
What I'm thinking is that we're at a point where we can't assume a lack of familiarity with Western concepts on the part of Japanese creators.

@ZealSeraph Actually, i think they were released on the same day. And since movies generally take longer to make, the game was either based on the movie, or they were co-developed.
gumibaer23 1 year ago
@ZealSeraph i'm pretty sure that the video game was based in the movie
88Hyo 1 year ago
@ZealSeraph actually, the game was based on he movie. And the game was awesome!
ZaneBarrow 1 year ago
@ZaneBarrow Well games based on movies are rarely good either. Sweet Home is a rare breed.
ZealSeraph 1 year ago
@ZealSeraph no the game is based on the movie making it in my opinion one of the only movie game more enjoyable then the movie
camged11 1 year ago
@ZealSeraph Or maybe it's a video game based on a movie. They came out literally the same day. I think that they were worked on simultaneously. You have to see the movie and play the game for the whole package.
P0RtalMan 1 year ago
@ZealSeraph It is the other way around. The movie came out first.
Gunmetalhed 8 months ago
@Gunmetalhed I heard they were released on the same day. Then again making a movie probably took longer than making a NES-game, so I guess it's the other way around anyway. But anyway, there aren't all that many good video games based on movies either, so that makes me just as amazed.
ZealSeraph 8 months ago
@ZealSeraph The movie came out in January '89 and the game came out 11 months later.
Gunmetalhed 8 months ago
Great idea - Sweet Home Haunted House! Of course nobody would get it here in America but it would be awesome if there was one in Japan!

Very well written. They really don't make horror movies like they used to. Or at least they really don't get appreciated. People really don't know how much they miss.

@thedragonb0y Indeed. They don't make them like they used to....
SaikyoMog 1 year ago 8

This, although never made in English, or heard ever heard of by 96% of Americans, just became my favorite horror movie.
wertests215 1 year ago
@wertests215 Horror can be put in through so many perspectives including gore (gore can be a visual representation of the monster's power and a horrible death will ensue). My problem is the lack of America's diversity. In most of our eyes in our lack of imagination we think there is only one way to make a movie, one way to write a book, one way to make a game. People think every possible one has been made before, but that's wrong. Every single adaptation of every hit known to man has been made.
thedragonb0y 1 year ago
@thedragonb0y You are right. Final Destination is what was on my mind when I said that but yes - it is America's lack of diversity that gets annoying but there are plenty of movies from here in America that I love. It's just that I wish people here could right stories as good as this!
wertests215 1 year ago 3
@wertests215 Well mostly my problem is in the eyes of the audience themselves. I've seen so many movies shot down for really weird and mostly unexplained reasons. Take for example, Paranormal Activity. How in the world were those bad horror movies?
thedragonb0y 1 year ago
@thedragonb0y Like I said, there are alot of horror movies here that I like but I havent seen that one. I heard it was good, and all my friends said it was good - why the critics didnt like it, I dont know.
wertests215 1 year ago
@wertests215 It wasn't hated, it was in JAPAN. XDD
We never got this movie, but I'd still know most Americans wouldn't like it. Not to sound mean or anything, but this come from personal experience. The larger majority of American (mostly in this generation) lack diversity and imagination when it come to entertainment ESPECIALLY today. They see a movie like Indiana Jones in this day and age and they will flip at how unrealistic it is.
thedragonb0y 1 year ago 4
@thedragonb0y Yeah, I can definitley see why people wouldnt like this, but to me thats called bad taste XD
wertests215 1 year ago
@thedragonb0y i personally didnt care for those movies, not cause they're scary cuz in my mind they arent but i do give credit where credit is due it made money and thats what movies are supposed to do

It looks as though a few Americans were involved in this project, too! This includes Dick Smith who apparently did the special effects. He also had a hand in a few of Martin Scorsese's films, including "The Godfather" (1 and 2) and"Taxi Driver", as well as "The Exorcist" and David Cronenberg's "Scanners".
ApacheMan2K 1 year ago 2
It would be amazing too see a remake of this. Both a movie and a game. (mostly a game) I've been a long fan of Resident Evil and I feel privileged to be able to have seen this movie.
And as a movie, it was actually pretty good. Only the Japanese have deformed ghost monsters that shoot lightning.

@Minan3 Well, I sort of got the feeling that she was somewhat possessed. That would explain why she was talking all weird...
SaikyoMog 1 year ago
@SaikyoMog like when taguchi was trying to get through to her as she saw the shadow and then she says "everybody dies", yeah she had to be possessed and also when taguchi also thought that she was still bathing and it was really mamiya. the plot was well focused. i dont blame them for keeping this movie a hush hush :D
Minan3 1 year ago 3

I don't even like horror and I loved this.
lolurfaggot 1 year ago
@lolurfaggot Well, if you liked the movie, you should try out the NES game that was released the same day as the movie... ;)
Of course, you'll want to make sure it's a patched version, since it never came out in the states. You'll see plenty of similarities between the two. Examples being the pitchfork, it's the strongest weapon in the game I think, and it's shown at the end of the movie, and the dress is a hidden item, also seen in the movie. Plenty of things here and there you'll find...

Sweet Home served as the main inspiration behind Resident Evil. The first Resident Evil borrowed many elements from Sweet Home, including the mansion setting, the puzzles, the item inventory management, the emphasis on survival, and even the "door" loading screen..
wikipedia said that.. not me.. lol..
dcom94 1 year ago

SaikyoMog 2 years ago
True but you gotta give it up for the Japanese for making such an excellent horror movie and a game to boot!
JaredKinter1981 2 years ago
Of course. The movie is quite well done, and the game is really great. I think it's safe to say that Sweet Home was the precursor to the Resident Evil games. Was made by Capcom... ;)
SaikyoMog 2 years ago
I was looking up the survival horror genre on Wikipedia and it mentioned the Sweet Home NES game that was based on this movie. I Downloaded the patched version of the game and enjoyed playing it and immediately started searching on here for the movie which you so graciously uploaded on here. This movie exceeded all of my expectations and i think we should petition to have the subtitled version released over here, i for one would buy it!
JaredKinter1981 2 years ago
Well, the thing about the movie and game was that they were released the same day, so who can really say which is based off what? :P
The subs you see were from a fan-subbing. I doubt you'll ever see a dvd / blu ray release in the states. Would be nice, but I doubt it.
