  • Wow your smart. i learned in school to raised them but this video just made a whole class period in my head. thank you

  • great vid dont be discouraged by negative people that want to correct on small matters

  • you should not hold im when he is going to cocoon

  • Lolipop

  • hey is your beardie cage a custom made one or can i buy one like it some where???

  • I enjoy the great informative session! Other videos on silkworm breeding barely give as much detail and description as yours! Liked to the max. Love the videos - subscribed.

  • Hi, i need some help, i have eggs now, the silkworm butterfly just did it...how many days till the worms born?how can i speed up the process? i need to feed my dragon.thx

  • 1. Chrysalis and cocoon are not interchangeable terms. 2. The larva inside the cocoon does not eat the silk and spit it back out! The silk is made from protein and is held in the salivary glands and excreted when they spit it out. The silk solidifies on contact with the air and a thin strand is created. 3. The liquid they "throw up" does not even come from the mouth. It is secreted by the abdomen and contains enzymes that break down the silk to all them to push through the silk wall.

  • No, he can't sell the cocoons. Either you let the worm hatch and the cocoon will be worthless for textile purposes, or you boil it to death, so it doesn't hatch.

If the silk worm eats its way out of the cocoon, the cocoon is obviously ruined and will only give small bits and pieces of thread.

  • @ubbecykelkedja The adult moths do not eat their way out of the cocoon. They release enzymes which break down the silk fibers and push through the weakened area of the cocoon wall.

  • Thanks for the video! Really fascinating stuff!! I was looking around for info on preparing cocoons for spinning and came across this. What do you do with your cocoons? Now I'm starting to wonder about starting our own little silk worm farm...

  • @Treetale i throw them out.

  • @JuliusTheDragon That was an awesome video. Too bad there wasn't a 3rd. You are an awesome speaker. You can probably sell the cocoons to spinners or other crafty people. Check out this site about Peace Silk. That way you wouldn't need to throw away the cocoons.

@Treetale I was looking at silkworms for spinning purposes too but am now thinking about a little silk worm farm. Sell to spinners, crafters and reptile owners. AND at the same time feed my addiction to spinning.

  • there already moving to it-END dude...epic fail there

  • where do u get food

  • thanks julius from Detroit Mi my name charles peace!

  • @SCENARIOBABY mulberry farms. com.....everything u can ever want

  • Quick question. I have my silkworms in a container right now with a 75 watt lightbulb on them, it seems like that light is drying up my mulberry chow rather quickley, I have about 25 large worms in there and ive gone through a half pound of chow in a day. Also, how often should I be removing the silkworm poop? they do poop a lot. Thanks for the help.

  • bright light is never good for caterpillars. Try a heating mat next time....and lower the temps to not dry out the chow.

  • So you're saying I got the right temperature? I thought they should molt when they're growing..,,, that's weird.,,, so I should wait another week...? Holly molly that's a while to go still ....

  • catapillars dont molt when they grow....thats why they are soft and dont have shells/hard skin(must have that to molt)

    yup just wait

  • @JuliusTheDragon Silkworms do infact molt. They molt four times as they grow through their 5 different stages of larval life, or instars, and must molt inbetween each stage. Most of their skin does allow them to change in volume continuously but it reaches a limit once stretched too far. Their head capsule and legs are made of the same hardened material as other arthropods and these things do not change size until the larva has molted.

  • My silkworms are gay.... They don't seem to know what's next in their lives.... They are so fat I feel they're going to explode at 3 inches big. I don't see them making any silk or any molting ..... I don't know what's the problem.... I have them in an incubator at 80F... Could that be the problem... I'm not sure but I doubt it...

  • they dont molt.....and no temps are good, a little hotter wont hurt...wait a week, if they dont coocon....feed them off.

  • good info, thanks!

  • Alright so they have to cacoon in 3 days you're saying .... If they don't then just feed them off ,....?

  • I put then all in an incubator t 80 F in the dark .....

  • if they dont coocon in 3 days......just feed em off.

  • do silkworms sleep because mine arnt eating much....most of them are adults but i just dont feel theyre eating like they should be/.... any comments??

  • what temperatures...also right before they coocon they stop eating.

  • What a smart young lad. Good to see kids of your ilk on the web!

  • Hi I 'm going to add you in my science blog, I'm eight years old can you be my friend? I love science and you are great!!

  • very helpful video subscribed :)

  • how many do you feed you cham?

  • 10 large ones at the most...as much as he will eat

  • can silkworms climb smooth surfaces?

  • yes it will take several hours though since they climb with the assistance of silk

  • hey mate my silk worms are still in the hybernation thing how do i get em going thanks matey

  • you mean the coocon...or refridgerator. they have to be refridgerated for three weeks.....and they stay in the coocon for 21 to 30 days......a liitle heat wont hurt to speed up the coocons but nothing over 80 degrees

  • you need to have crushed up mulberry leaves. but if you already ahve the leaves then just feed the leaves.

  • how do you make the artificial food?

  • The silk worms that you find out in the woods are they safe for geckos to eat? or is that the wrong type.

  • you have a very difrent kind of caterpillar.

  • The poops? Are shit!

  • Do you know where I can buy them from?

  • when is the next part going to be up? i might try this..im breeding dubias right now and its coming along great... what is a good site to purchase some silk worms

  • well live plants arnt a nacesity but thats like lving your whole life without going out side...its a game for them to taste smaell explore and hide....also plastic plants just arnt edible and as stable plus they dont contribute to the humidity.....try a umbrella tree or ficus.

  • i had changed the substarte and im changing my lights and you dont need live plants so yeah when she grows up

  • can you give instructions on how to hatch their eggs

  • /0\ this is the bat sign copy and paist every where so he can take ove the internet!

  • yes, they do....just like our reptiles heat is the essiential to growth....babies and adults should be kept at 88 degress for maxiumium groth...babies esspitially.

  • do they need to be heated (baby worm)

  • i will make a vid soon of alot of things......editing is taking forever....yes they go in the crisper area of your fridge for at least 3 weeks...they let them sit at 80 degress for 21 days and boom....eggs hatch.....good luck with that adio in your vids.

  • umm when you see this please reply. I have herd that you have to give their eggs a "winter" in the fridge is that true. also how long does it take for the eggs to hatch

  • i dont know much about that animal but google will hold the answer for shure...its always a hard estamate mainly because....breeding...brumation...sicknesses....my beardie eats 40 every other day....so times 40 by 180....

  • how many would you need to feed a croc skink all year round

  • Great video. You should make more on beardie care and beardie food care.

  • after you get your coocon you place them all or just have ever many you have in a tubbaware at room temputaure...dont put any lights on them...no cage is needed and the moths cant fly...

  • question...after its coccon in the white oval shape...do you place the tupperware in some sort of cage?

  • this sucks ball sacks
