What occurs to me is how the context of the times can determine not only box office results but the legacy a film. In trying to humanize the plight of young addicts to a less aware and less empathetic audience in 1971, the filmmakers may have underscored the stereotypes that a white middle class teenager might have had, (I did), about what it meant to be an addict. We know more now and our reactions can be more nuanced as we see the part of ourselves that also has destructive needs. Great edits.
Sorry if i make 2 comments on the same movie,it's couse of i'm "NOKINGNOLIES" also!!i have 2 accounts couse of the big mess i've done with my passwords, too often forgotten,i presume..anyway,yourchosen movie really moved me a lot, then i needed to confirm how much have i appreciate it 2 times and, please, send me an invite to NOKINGNOLIES also..i love your chosen movies..i'll be really grateful to you, remember,i'm NOKINGNOLIES also, many thanks,Paolo from Italy,my previous comment is the one below!
This great movie(New York,USA...)could be a story seen ..and lived... thousands and thousands miles away. The same failures, the same hopes, the same universal drama, the same tears of a generation that spoke different languages but too oftem died in the same stupid and underhanded war i have ever seen...it makes me cry too much friends, now no more with me...extremely moving......hope you understand....

A sad movie, but on that had to be produced and shown --your tribute was excellent
