  • By far my favorite Joy Division song. So dark and powerful.

  • Commercials before a joy division song is an insult. fuck you progressive car insurance

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS

Maybe you haven't seen the clip of the Killers' version, but it's sort of a tribute to Ian Curtis (Joy Division's singer) You may know computers, but you definitely don't know music.

  • greit lp !

  • is this live version?? sounds different from the one I have in my ipod..

  • this song creates a peaceful and depressive environment on me

  • I think (this is by no means a competition) I've got a session version of this brilliant song uploaded. But how the hell did you get this past f****** copyright ?

  • They live on in spirit

  • rip ina crutis

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS it's ian curtis, no ina crutis

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS Quantity measures quality... ya, right, idiot.

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS without joy division there would be no killers version. so fuck you and fuck the killers!

  • @NicoSuave425 You are both wrong! I'm a huge Killers fan and I understand this song was created by Joy Division. And The Killers covered it because they obviously appreciated it! Music is music, I don't see why everyone gets so uptight over covers.

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS

Why do you speak such nonsense? I don't recall the killers having such a magnificient and charismatic singer. BTW it's only a matter of taste and Joy Division is good taste. The killers are a more recent band so of course the younger public knows them better, even if someone like beiber would sing this song (which i hope he never does) he would have more views.

  • @MangaFeint the leader singer of the killers commited suicide by hanging himself while listening to zombie birdhouse

  • Listen to this!

    /watch?v=nEIjXmW5BVA

  • i love

  • What a driving-exuberant-cacophony of waiting and expectation. What a perfect expression.

  • The killers version suck ass and EVERY JD knows it

  • 2nd that....Tis an eargasm!!!

  • the end guitar solo is f**king amazing. this song is waaayyy eargasm worthy

  • well I wanted to listen to rory gallagher's shadow play and I came across this song. It's awesome! And it's such a pity that this band isn't as well known as other artists that just dont deserve so much fame....

  • @vasorockgirl both Rory and Joy Division rock!

  • genius song, genius band

  • saw these in Oxford met Ian Curtis at the hotdog van god bless him

  • lol silly killers...

  • radmacradmac .... are u benefiting from uploading copyrighted tracks? hence the advertisements.

do you own the rights ?

  • Perfect Song

  • i love the bass in this song, is sublime!!

  • OMFG, what did I just run across.... I've been kind of ignoring this band but I feel bad now. I think, I think, I'm in LOVEEEEEE :D

  • Fucking enjoy both songs, you people are stupid as shit.

  • I wonder why all the special people like Ian Curtis had to die. I wish to be a musician for as long as I can.

  • @fireitup9 He suffered, you can hear it in his art. Artists, the good ones, are often troubled people with serious demons.

  • @fireitup9

It's called heavy depression, a failing marriage, and a feeling of loneliness.

  • @hightimesbruce Many people have depression, a failing marriage and feelings of loneliness. It's the inability to cope with these things...

  • @hightimesbruce and drugs, loads of drugs

  • well i disagree. JD's lyrics and sounds carry far greater substance than that of the smiths. and well its apparent that morrissey hides his homosexuality in his lyrics. nothing against gay people but thats just fucking weird. and the cure sounds too 'pop' for my personal taste.

  • two different generations two different legends(yes killers are Legends among this era) Fuck just appreciate both. NIN and johnny cash Hurt's are both fucking great why cant these be too?

  • @angelgu323

People have a tendency to be music nazis and refuse anything but the original can be good, excpecially if it's popular in the last ten years. Hurt was an orginal by NIN that Johnny Cash coverd. What I find to be a beautiful example that pop culture artists can make beautiful music that even the greats want to cover! I demand PEACE IN THE MUSIC WORLD!

  • @daydreamdani18 Johnny Cash was (is) far superior to the Killers. hell i wish he would've covered this.

  • are you really comparing the killers with joy division? i don't wanna live on this planet anymore

  • excellent !!!

  • without JD you wouldn't have the killers, she wants revenge, interpol, the cure, the smiths and a bunch of other bands that aren't worth mentioning.

  • @djkaizerLA You're right!Especially The Cure ... and New Order

  • @djkaizerLA How could you group The Smiths and The Cure with those other shitty bands, and get your facts straight The Cure were already around before JD, and The Smiths is nothing like JD and are far greater.

  • @djkaizerLA

    1. Why the fuck are you lumping Shit Wants Revenge in there?

    2. The Cure were around before JD.

    3. The Killers are a lot more influenced by the more poppy mid-80s new wave than the late-70s/early-80s post-punk.

  • joy division make my sad pfff!! amazing

  • i like joy division very much :D

  • @FrankieMcPop Heheheh! we tought you were forced to watch the video!

  • Amazing, I've listened to Joy Division since the mid 90's, and this song still gives me chills when I listen to it. I don't listen to it non-stop like I used to, just revisit it every so often, but this song, and this band touches me like no other. ..... Ian.....

  • Check piggy the journey, joy divisions unknown pleasures is the best album ever made, i wanna do something similar.

  • joy divison lead singer was one crazy fuck though

  • how can this be a demo version of the killers song. the killers song they are emo garbage.

  • @royalnaz1 Emo?? Please! Have you ever listened to them??!

  • hat is this song about?

  • @overcastx3 no, its not about a hat. its about waking up every morning and getting tired of Cheerios. He buys Kix on the next track

  • fuck the killers

  • This one sounds like a demo version after listening The Killers' cover. It has some potential like that but isn't really well used, The Killers is a much more gifted band so they made this song into a hit.

  • @mRt9922 u dont know how wrong u are.

  • @mRt9922 What a stupid comment. There would be no Killers if it weren't for Joy Division. This version is the original and the best.

  • @graemereaper And what a stupid answer. You're talking like Shadowplay is the only song The Killers made their name with. Also, just because it's the original version doesn't mean it's the better version. There are many many covers that are much more popular and better than the original ones. Shadowplay by The Killers is one of them.

  • @mRt9922 Oh, wow, thank you for your opinion. Now I know what to think about Joy Division and The Killers' cover of this song. one moment, wait... Who are you? And what the hell makes you feel to be able to give a strong opinion like this? 15 old Killers fan with mind so closed that it has to tell everybody how fuckin' awesome his favourite band really is? C'mon. Grow up. This song is a piece of art and it is not to be opinionated in the stupid way like this.

  • @acidbillyburn Seriously, what's your problem? Why are you crying like a bitch just because of my opinion? I'm not here to promote Killers, I've lisent to this song and told my opinion about it. You can either agree or fuck off, your decision. For me, this original version is like a demo version of Killers' version. What is it that hurts you so badly about it?

  • @mRt9922

I don't think anybody is 'crying like a bitch'. We just think your opinion is silly, 'agree or fuck off' is a false dichotomy of choice. I would appreciate your absence, mainly because I find your opinion slightly annoying and uninformed, but much like The Killers I doubt you'll be going anywhere disappointingly. So now I've said my opinion as well. Good.

  • @mRt9922 I was going to reply to this and then realised you must be an idiot. Joy Division don't need defending, there music speaks for itself.

  • @Woofled Wow, it amazes me how many sorry asses are here can't even stand hearing something negative.

  • @mRt9922 hey man it has nothing to do with hearing something negative! your opinion isn't solid to sustain!

You should realize that this music was created by JD when music industry hadn't developed all the equipment engineers brought up! it was a music exercise they made up themselves in their own single way back then! and they kicked ass too! Killers is just a band in a big sea of modern bands that look alike. they are good pros and that's it!

  • @mRt9922 this song is like whisky. what the killers did, is mix it with coca-cola. yes it tastes good, but when you get older, you will learn to appreciate the pure whisky and never mix it with coca-cola again.

  • @qroqqle I don't think you are to deciede that this version is the "whisky" and the Killers version is the "cola". Neither am I, because it's music, depends on people's tastes. Just because this version is older doesn't mean it's more quality or better. If you compare with whiskies again it's also the same thing, older whisky doesn't mean better whisky.

  • @mRt9922 i don't think you are to decide that this version is a "demo"

  • @qroqqle I am not saying this version is a demo, I'm not claiming anything. I said for me, this original version sounds like a demo version of Killers' version. That's what I think, you can think just the opposite. People can have different tastes it's normal. What I fail to understand is why people think the old is gold and new is trash. Check all the top and other commets, it's all about shitting on Killers' version and praising this version. And you can't even stand a different opinion.

  • at first i thought this song was about suicide, but now i am unsure. he is talking about feeling isolated and hopeless... and the second verse sounds especially violent. using someone for your "own ends" sounds like either prostitution or slavery.

  • that voice is so unique!

you can instantly recognise it's curtis...

  • This track inspired the opening scene for AVALON. A muscle car driving along a highway at night.

  • Dont give me this bollocks about the beetles, Joy Division are the best British band ever.

  • @wallnutwhip1 why would you evn compare them ass, they never were the same kind of music

  • @wallnutwhip1 First of all, that's your opinion, don't state it as though it's fact. Secondly, they're so different comparing them is just silly.

  • Ian Curtis lives forever

  • I f*@#!ing love this band

  • masterpiece

  • @SKItTLes24824

So, you're saying the copy is better than the original? How profoundly ignorant of you. Joy Division pioneered that sound. The Killers will never be on their level. How much talent do you need to cover a song?

  • @malkuth3 actually, you do need talent to do a good cover of a song, which is exactly what the killers did . i'm not saying their version is better, i like both, but the killers are great musicians, and their cover of shadowplay was the best tribute to joy division they could make .

  • @mMbowierulzMm I totally agree with you. We all have our opinions, and some may hate the Killers version, or may hate this one. Every one is a critic, but I think they both are beautiful in there one way, and I strongly believe The Killers did a great job covering this song <3

  • @mMbowierulzMm I disagree. None should make a cover of Joy Divison. Peace.

  • @gombost Personally i am glad they did.. Cuz that's how i knew JD

  • @SKItTLes24824 lolololol

  • @SKItTLes24824 lol, funny joke though

  • @SKItTLes24824 get out lol

  • @SKItTLes24824 fuck off

  • bom bom bom bom bom bom bom

  • OMFG.

HOW DO I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS ALREADY?!

FUCK MY INCONVENIENT LATE 90'S BIRTH- UGH!

  • @glitterfreeze1111 - It's not your fault. There's always too much good music out there for one to be fully aware of ALL of it. (At least, that's what I tell myself when I discover something awesome, that I overlooked.) The fact that you're catching up now makes you extremely cool, trust me. ;)

  • sdfh

  • the guitar on this brings tears to my ears lol seen peter hook perfom the entire album in edinburgh earlier this year was EPic

  • Oh god, I'm so old....I bought this, Unknown Pleasures back when i was 12 after hearing Blue Monday so now an old fossil by youtube standards....still fucking awesome, especially Bernard Sumners guitar solo at the end....

  • bommmmm

  • Yay i'm viewer 240001! :B

  • i prefer this version than the killers but these two bands are my favorite bands of all time for me

  • the killers are just a band among others,Joy division was the band .....

  • @triffle69 they're both great bands, why do you have to necessarily pick one?

  • Comment removed

  • @triffle69 Nobody discusses that dude, but I mean why hate them? seriously stop and think why do you think they wrote songs in first place? Just so everyone could say "they're so awesome, and nobody should ever cover their songs because they only want to brag about how awesome they are and not inspire other bands..."? No, they wanted to be something. Bands who covered them respect them, because they (joy division) inspired them! They wanted everyone to know these guys! They Never took credit.

  • for me the Killers version its more superficial, it doesn't have the intensity of Joy Division, I like them both, one to relax and the other one to exorcise my feelings

  • @hpjudoman probably because The Killers version was recorded by The Killers.

  • This is the first time i've heard Joy Division.. wow.. it's always amazing to find gooood music and makes me wonder on what else i'm missing out on.

  • If you read my comment properly I didn't say 'know and respect' I said 'know and prefer' and that is completely true.

  • Its not a shame - I think more people alive today know and prefer The Killers version..

Full Respect to Joy Division though.. amazing band! Shame it was over so quick

  • @TalkFastJack People know and respect the Killers version better do they ??

    Good one.

  • straight up rad. nuff said.

  • oh that bass

  • The Killers Can Garggle Mayonaise

  • I just bought an original copy of this on vinyl, not only does it sound like the gods,it feels like Ian.

  • Saw this band a number of times...

Extraordinary edginess to every gig. It was like a weird religious ceremony.

All types went to see them. All the different youth cults and a wide range of ages went too. Strange isn't the word for it. A sinister rapture. Especially with this number.

  • yesssssssssssssssss

  • Besides the Beatles, my FAVORITE BAND...EVER. R.I.P. IAN.

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • hate the fact that loads of year 9's (13 year olds) think they like Joy division and post ''Love will tear us apart'' on there facebook.

  • @Joobs1010 Lol, that's because that is their only really good song.

  • @Joobs1010 if more people listen to joy division, any joy division, that's cool by me

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • fooking brilliant

  • the killers is version is better... but this is also good

  • @noble381297

    idiot

  • @noble381297 faggot

  • @noble381297 ...are you insane? The Killers for one are uninspiring, Joy Division wrote Shadowplay and has far more guts that the Killers version (I say version loosely). The only band that has come close to doing this song justice is Radiohead, who incidentally were partly inspired by Joy Division

  • @TalkToTheBody You are so pretentious. You don't have to like the cover, but it doesn't mean anyone else can't. It also doesn't mean they didn't do a good job as well.

  • @TheGoodStuff2010 I am not sure why I am pretentious, anyone can do a cover for sure and I have no problem with it. My opinion is the Killers killed it, but what annoys me more is people thinking they wrote it. The Killers are in my opinion a gutless band, they will be forgotten if not already but you can listen to what you want to I have no problem with it

  • @TalkToTheBody I can see the problem with people thinking they wrote it, but I don't understand your anger. But, can you blame them for the mistake? The song was about 2 and half decades old when he covered it. Not everyone is familiar with or have heard of Joy Division. And what does it even mean to be a gutless band?

  • @TheGoodStuff2010 I'm not angry at all, what makes you suggest such a thing? I'm not blaming anyone either. Gutless in terms of the Killers in my opinion lack substance, they have no bite

  • @TalkToTheBody We'll just agree to disagree. I can enjoy both bands. But, as a huge Killers fan, the idea that they lack substance is false. I don't know what band can compare to the standards you set according to JD, but the Killers are great.

  • @TheGoodStuff2010 the killers just lack punch, but that's just my opinion, unless you can point me to one of their songs that displays some bite

  • @TalkToTheBody I think the thing is that The Killers genre isn't your type of music and you have a bias state of mind because of the cover. It's like how some hardcore metal fans hate rap and vice-versa, they don't give the other a chance based on some supposed "principle". There are a lot of good songs, but "Goodnight, Travel Well" is incredible in my opinion.

  • @TheGoodStuff2010 I gave it a listen but had to chop it half way, not my thing, lacks that elusive kick. Compare that "moody" song to Joy Division's New Dawn Fades and you can see a massive difference in ooomph value. My musical taste is not confined to one genre, my labums stretch from ABBA and The Carpenters to the Sex Pistols, Cocteau Twins, Def Leppard, Melissa Etheridge, U2, Robbie WIlliams, The Cult, Eva Cassidy, and loads more. This song you mentioned just does not grab me.

  • @TalkToTheBody But, what do you want them to sound like? Every artist is different and may have some similarity. The mood you are looking for is unique to Ian Curtis. Brandon has a different mood that just isn't your thing. Does that mean they are bad--no.

  • @TheGoodStuff2010 I dont want them to sound like anything only themselves and apart from Mr. Brightside which i liked I find them an average pop band and nothing more. I like a lot of bands that have the same branding if you like but The Killers do not make me want to buy something of theirs. Just my taste, I like my music to have passion and feeling be it Eva Cassidy or Coldplay or U2 or Alanis Morrisette...if it stirs my emotions then its for me, happy , sad or whatever

  • @TheGoodStuff2010 My comments were really in answer to those who think Joy Division copied it, call it musically educating the young :D

  • much darker than the Killers version...but better.

  • @ChachaChapati that's because Joy Division wrote it. The Killers are a weak band in comparison

  • @TalkToTheBody Dude, I know that. Worded a little differently, but I do know that the first time I heard the Killers version that it was flat in comparison.

  • @TalkToTheBody But, they aren't trying to compare themselves or be better, they just wanted to do a cover or were asked to. Whether or not it's true (even though you'll vehemently deny it), you are just sour because some like The Killer's version more.

  • so glad my dad used to listen post punk music, he showed me how great joy division was... this was the first song i ever heard from them.. so dark, so joy division <3

  • @Yeltrahmas. Honestly ! You need help.

  • I love Joy Division, but honestly I like the killers version better.

  • Youtube/ (Google) is a criminal promoting enterprise, that's why. They have their nefarious agenda "O" if you catch my gist .

  • i can't even imagine

how it would be to listen to Joy Division for the first time

    back in their time!

    it would be an Apocalypse!!!

1979! just think what kind of music existed that time!

    and suddenly... Joy Division!

    i mean, listen!

this music just doesn't belong in any age!!!

    it just exists. beyond timeframes.

  • @chemkouv Drugs are bad

  • Killers is Joy Division for underages. ;)

  • my next tattoo...shadowplay <3

  • The Killers.... Joy division is the real thing.

  • The originals better, The Killers are a good band n all, but Ian Curtis was Brilliant.

  • Im sorry, but the killers couldnt capture this songs true beauty

  • Bass, guitar, and drums shred. Rock and roll, the good old english way.

  • love you joe division the film controle is super xxxxx 8bunker belgium

  • In the shadowplay acting out your own death, knowing no more.

  • wagons

  • The Perfect Song

  • thanks for the upload

  • Haha, I heard about Joy Division from Zombies VS Unicorns. I'm so glad I heard about them!!!
