  • Wow! Didn't think I'd like this, but the orchestration's great. Always liked Mark Lindsay.

  • Chubbs sang it best

  • Mark's voice was made for multiple types of music.

  • The first recorded full length version was by Smokey Roberds in March of 1970 on the White Whate label and is found on a compilation cd. The Carpenters were second to record it, but A & M believed that since Crocker Bank was California based, the song would not become a national hit. Then Mark Lindsay's version was released and started climbing the charts, so then A & M released the Carpenters version. BTW, Roger Nichols arranged the Smokey Roberds version.

  • Mark's version is better.

  • lyrics by paul williams

  • I believe this version was recorded before the Carpenters, who rush released their version and the rest is history. Love the great arrangement by the very talented Artie Butler, this is my favorite version of a much recorded song. Thank you for this!

  • @grooverunner Paul Williams himself admits that they had to rush write the bridge and an additional verse from what they originally wrote for a bank commercial for The Carpenters to record it. The Carpenters are the original artists of the full song. Paul Williams was the vocalist for the original bank commercial short version.
