you're wrong, the rules mean nothing, all they need is to advance the plot so they can make their point with the story.

It's like the old debate "batman vs superman, who would win?". If you follow the rules (even the made-up comic book rules), you'd say superman wins right? still, everyone knows that's crap, batman owns superman. the "rules" are made up as they go alone, just so they can get to the point where batman kicks superman's ass in some awesome bad-ass way.

You're wrong. Writing without following your own internal rules is just sloppy writing. If you bring the ghost from the machine to save the day, then any work the characters have done to that point is completely betrayed by the plot. They earned nothing.

By your argument, Wolverine could suddenly fly if it advanced the plot. There's nothing wrong with making up new rules that cause the old ones to break, but you need to have a hella compelling reason.

absolutely. obviously the final resolution to the conflict has to come out of the character, and the character has to be consistent, but if wolverine needs to be some place, and the only way to get there is by flying, he can fly (Storm can give him a lift, they probably have jetpacks, whatever).

We're not talking about breaking the character consistency here, we're talking about the guy's pants.
