I would not be exxagerating by saying this album, particularily this song, got me thru the scariest, loneliest 18 months of my life. Thank you John, thank you.
John Prine is like a vintage wine-he gets better with age. Sure, his voice may not be what it once was, but nobody puts their heart and soul into a song better than JP. A JP tune is a work of art. Even though this is not one of JP's songs, he does it better than anyone. He is my all time favorite-nobody is even a close second.
you just know when something is perfect there is just no doubt and this is perfection how can you hear this and not want to buy a ticket find that lady and kids and just sit down and talk?
there used to be a live version of John doing this song. Looked like the Austin City Limits stage. Beautiful. Anybody know where it is. I can't find it on Youtube anymore.
"Build a castle with memories just to have somewhere to go." Shit that hits me where it hurts. Makes me think of all the good old memories I like to visit. That's life
When i've had a rough week, a rough month or what-have-you, i listen to this song about 3 or 4 times in a row and just let the tears go... beautiful song... power to save lives.
The man has paid his dues over the years of broken hearts, drugs, alcohol and all the hard knocks that life can throw at a man. This is where the feelings and emotions come from that make him the great songwriter that he is. God bless you John.
anyone whose ever rode on a Greyhound bus in an odd state of desperation understands the 2nd line of this song.

I'd love to see the version of this song when Prine did it live at Austin City Limits. It used to be on here and was one of my favorites.

@rosa4kiddos Interesting. Most lyric sites attribute it to John Prine.

Yeah, I was looking for that video too!
Good production / video / sound...
JP doesn't cover too many songs but when he picks one he knows how to pick 'em. What a great song!
Please repost the video if possible. Made me a Blaze Foley fan!

That's actually the one I wanted for the vid. Truth is, I wouldn't have made the video if I could've just pulled that one up for a listen.
Worked out well though. Now we have, at least, one to share.

sometimes when i listen to this song, i feel like there is a me i dont even know.
someone said, "all the times i thought i was havin a good time, i wish i coulda just bought blaze a bottle and a nice dinner"
that comment was as eloquent as this song.

Simply one of the best and emotional songs I have ever heard.
A good friend introduced me to it.
This song means more to John than you can ever imagine.
Do you feel it?
