This is a joke. NASA cancelled the NERVA project in 1972, at that time the Nuclear thermal engines that were developed for the project had the capability to send manned missions to Mars and the outer solar system - but funding for this proven technology was withdrawn. Now it looks like the Russians are developing this same technology and will be able to put it into use far earlier than this disingenuous idea.
Now that the space program has become privatized, there will be a space exploration boom. I am willing to bet things will begin to progress at a much faster rate now. Competition will be the catalyst. Musk and SpaceX have accomplished a great deal in only 4 years for a fraction of the cost. Other companies are nearing completion of their programs as well. Man will walk on Mars before 2025....count on it.

Musk also has the passion and determination to go to Mars. If you can hang on for another 15 years or so, you WILL see it.

So lets say you load up the stuff to build a rocket in space at the space station. Then you take what fuel you need to go. Because no friction in space. All you need is one blast and Off you go. Battery technology has come around to where you could power any landing vehicle.You would just drop the lander. then it would only need the fuel to launch it. back to mother craft. Man I am stoned... @lastpatriot4America I think you're probably mostly right here. Except, the way they are talking these days, there wouldn't be a return mission. The people who go are signing up for a one-way trip. They would become colonists. Instead of using the effort to get them back, it might be wiser to use all that energy and money on simply putting down the beginnings of a permanent base settlement.
I'd go in a heartbeat. This world doesn't have long for this world.

what a tremendous waste of money. spending all those billions of dollars for the sake of going to a barren rock. and if they waited a hundred years we'd probably have the technology to do it for a fraction of the cost to do it using today's technology.

@SeiferOptics Well, since the thing is probably being designed by Jews at companies owned by Jews, I'm sure if you want a bunch of Jews to go onboard the first flight, then that flight will probably be a resounding success.
And do keep in mind: the original early American space program was created, designed, and built by GERMAN (ex-Nazi, in fact) scientists. They had PLENTY of explosions during their early testflights.
