Sonic SatAM is how I first gained a love of Sonic, so having Sally was really important to me. Amy is also cool and was a necessity.  I'm also a big fan of the Sonic comic. I enjoyed the Sonic and Tails arch with Fiona Fox and had to include the "bad girl". I had just recently seen the AoStH episode with Merna and she was fresh in my mind. Finally, I included Robotnik because somethings wrong with me. ._.
