well....that table is called kotatsu. and the point of kotatsu IS to have a heating element under it and blanket to preserve the heat, because japanese houses usually are not insulated. but the heating elements are not strong enough to pop the popcorn. so i still don't know how is the trick really done

In Japan (and perhaps other Asian countries) the table is often over a hole in the floor where there is a heater in the center. The blanket keeps the heat from escaping.
