Yup....and even the trained technical drummers of the 60's (i.e. Ginger Baker) were unique because they basically studied the jazz greats by consuming themselves with their records and going to the odd show. This jazz training made them very loose and also individualistic because each jazz drummer was unique (Max, Philly Joe, Roy Haynes, Kenny Clarke, Elvin, etc.). Today, there are too many generic sounding drummers for some reason.
Patrickjo123, your a fuckin loser aren't you. Did you remember to do you're research? Travis barker has promoted himself, worked with 100s of artists, done commercials, was drummer of the year at one point, #1 punk drummer in 2007(modern drummer mag polls), he Plays the snare, hip hop, punk and latin, played/remixed/opened the superbowl theme, did 10000s of shows in various different styles etc. Good drumming = sound, showmanship and promotion. Travis has all three.
i agree, and if you were going to try and make and now sound like you are foaming at the mouth while you typed it, travis barker was not a good choice on your part. i agree drumming is different these days. i think it is obvious who the real drummers are in this debate. why don't you kids go outside and play. don't worry your blink 182 cd will be ready for you when you get back and if it gets old there will be one just waiting to take its spot. you won't even notice the difference.
when I said he played like a 12 year old, I meant that his drumming isn't complex at all. No dynamics. He isn't bad, He just isn't amazing like people say
Well,I wouldn't say he is "amazing",but I do enjoy his playing. Bonham............well............just watch the drum solo from Albert Hall in '70. Thats all I need say about him!
And lots of famous drummers credit Charlie Watts because its what they grew up listening to and at the time, it was inspiring. Today, Charlie Watts is a joke when you place him beside Jojo Mayer, Travis Barker, Jason B, etc.
Yeah, but Travis will always be a douche no matter how much drum technique he has. Charlie on the otherhand is cool and has provided a backbeat that swings and will be always legendary. I'm going to listen to "Exile" now and try to put Travis out of my mind.
Simplicity isn't a style, its a sorry excuse. To form a style you have to at least go beyond the average expectation, which is Staying on beat. Plus, you don't even form a style, it just happens. Nothing happend with Charlie Watts LOL
Simplicity is NOT a "sorry excuse". What would you say about Bonhams simplicity? Not every Zep song was a showcase for him to show how much of a bad ass he was. A song like TANGERINE was beyond simple, yet Bonham nailed that song and made it so much more by playing so little. A good drummer knows what to play and what NOT to play.
I meant that staying on beat isn't a style. You can't question whether it is or it isn't.
I am not saying that Charlie Watts is bad, I am merely saying that he is nothing special. A brilliantly diverse drummer like Travis Barker could blow him away. Come on, He plays not just punk, but hip hop, Electro, Latin, pop punk etc. He was also rated the #1 punk drummer in "Modern Drummer mag" and was drummer of the year at one point.
"Worst drummer ever. He drums like a 12 year old...always has." Sounds to me like you were saying he is bad. Just curious, what do you think of Stewart Copeland?
His style of drumming is too simple. Just because his timing is perfect doesn't make him a great drummer. When it comes to drumming, staying on beat isn't a question. A good drummer is able to project a significant style. A good drummer speaks through his drums. Charlie watts doesn't do that because all of the rolling stones songs have the same beat or (similar beats). His beats are simple, old and done before. You learn his beats in beginner drum classes, I did.
His simplicity IS his style. What do you mean staying on beat isn't a question? Its CRUCIAL. Ultimately a drummer is there to keep time. You need to listen to more Stones before you make such harsh judgements. Ever heard "Sway" or "Bitch" off of STICKY FINGERS?
If he sux so much, why do so many people(Clapton,Mick,Keith,McCartney etc.....) all say he's great? I'm sure out of your favorites a few of them would pick Charlie as one of their favorites and an influence and they would tell you he is indeed an excellent drummer.
HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY CHARLIE !!!

Charlie Watts is one of the reasons that I want to buy a drum set. You don't need to be the most skilled drummer to have a great sound.

Charlie plays with soul. Today's drummers play with wanting to be the best drummers.

Charlie never studied drums, just like Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and lots of other BRITISH AND EUROPEAN drummers of 50s and 60s.
They learned just looking other more experienced drummers of their towns.
No doubt at present days any 25 Y.O. drummer plays TECHNICALLY better than them.
But they play the same things.
Double pedal, rolls and rolls again, very complicated patterns without musical taste.
I still prefer Charlie to many other famous MONSTERS, ARTIFICIAL plastic drummers.
italiarovinata 3 years ago 25
50 years ago was not easy and very expensive to take some master lessons.
It was really hard just to buy a decent drumkit.
But every drummer was original with his own idea of drumming playing with fantasy and taste.
So, even if technically poor, they experimented every day, they were able to build a new way of playing drums in a completely new music style.
Charlie was one of the most important of them and he was very imitated. He was considered a hard drummer!

@italiarovinata obviously Moon, Starr, Bonham never studied because they invented a style, they was influenced by jazz but they started from 0

Why don't you put all this crap on Travis Barker videos instead of anything Charlie Watts happens to be in because i'm pretty sure no one here cares.

there's something you forget.
Listen to the early Stones, of Brian Jones era I mean.
Then if you still think Charlie Watts had not a his own style or he was not sufficiently creative, there's something wrong in your ears.

Bohnham had style and he was creative. That is it. personally, I think his drumming is pretty alright
