I think you are speaking the truth alltogether. I would like to live in Japan, but I I've understood that it's enough to go there as a tourist. I respect their culture, but I'm not sure I would adapt. I think admitting that downside is good. It's very important to adapt when you move to another country, both when it comes to culture, language and morals/ethics.
Hey man great vid. Quick question though, if I speak fluent Japanese and are attending college in Japan can I get a regular job in Japan? I don't really have any interest in teaching English but I really want to live there.
@CouchPatrol001 you dont even really need to go to college here. your degree can be from anywhere. its the fluency thats important. so in short, yes. yes you can get into other fields with native level japanese.
@unrested im gonna start studying japan this summer on my own and study it in college as well, and learn the culture. Im a very calm person or at like to think i am, im not loud. But the thing im worried about is im not gonna be able to meet new people. Do they avoid gaijin like the plague. Or is it not as bad as some people make it out to be if your not disrespectful to their culture. Also i would like to live there but im worried about the costs. Any idea. Sorry about all the questions.
Does having a year contract as the standard for teaching have something to do with the 80% statistic? This video seems to be arguing that all gaijin (teachers/education workers) who come to Japan are attempting to permanently immigrate or something, which is utterly wrong! Make it past a year? Like they are trying to survive as long as possible in Japan, and its a fucking game show? Seriously! 80% leave because they sign a year contract and intend to go for experience. Is this news?
@Floodlezoot as is said with the examples in this video these are people who dont even make it through that 1 year contract. At no point do I speak about immigrating. Hence the use of a work visa and not a permanent residency visa. Perhaps a second watch.
@unrested alright. maybe I misunderstood. So can you clarify this: 80 percent of gaijins who come to Japan DO NOT LAST AS LONG AS ONE YEAR? So then, many of them abandon their contracts right, or get fired? I didn't see people leaving JET at anywhere near that number, but maybe that's cause JET is so relaxed compared to Nova and that type of business situation. What kind of numbers do you see leaving these days? Is it worse than years ago or the same rate?
@Floodlezoot It takes alot to get fired, but I would give a resounding YES that many many gaijin abandon contracts. JET is a small gov program compared to the hordes that eikaiwa and ALT dispatch employ. But even JET has some horror stories of gaijin breaking contracts (even though the pay and job are great). During the earthquake it was horrible. Gaijin nowhere close to fukushima ran off on tons of contracts with no warning....Honestly PM me if you wanna know more I have loads of stories...
@unrested A lot English teachers wash out before their year is up and there was one tragic instance where a teacher under too much stress murdered his Japanese school manager and then himself.
I don't understand why someone would want to live in a country where most of the people don't want you there. I mean even if they are polite you know that they view you as an invader.
Sad, but my 1st big trip abroad (from the USA) I learned fast to sometimes say when asked. "Where am I from?.. Canada!"...b/c so many of my western brothers & sisters misbehaved, leaving the locals to think very badly of us. Some of the things I saw were astounding, downright embarrassing.
Every point you made, I agree. I think it would help if young people from the States traveled more. Re: the English language, Australians & New Zealanders seemed more expert at being away from home.

dear god i know a guy that would die if he went to japan becuase he acts like hes top dog at my school he cant hold a temper to save his soul from a shinigami he has a bad temper (and he has a black belt in tae-kwon-do and he thinks that makes him better than someone like me whos just under him) he gets in to fights constantly talking trash that he cant back up which we all know is a no no in japan (he talks trash to me to even though i try to help him stay out of trouble what a pain)
Obviously these gaijin don't watch dorama! I was surprised to find they eat (wait for it) japanese food, I imagined them more westernized. Probably cause I live in a westernized country and thought all countries ridded themselves of their cultural identities. All that you said though seem like basics to me and should I say too easy? Only people who love Japan would consider moving to it and if they love it they would know these things. Oh, no research needed, watch dramas! Learned a lot there!
Being American, the food was definitely it for me. I can't afford 50 buck pizzas. Other than that, Japan is like heaven on earth. Don't get me wrong. It's nothing of what people in the West think. But it is great. Never had trouble with people. Always able to find a peaceful situation or place to chill.
also some ppl sadly go to japan just for anime and manga me i love that stuff but its not the reason i wanna be in japan i didnt like anime till i was 19 i was interested in asian culture since i was in grade 4 so if ppl go to japan just for anime thats pretty dumb in my opinion this is comin from an anime fan here :P
Thanks for the info. I'm trying to teach myself japanese it's kind of hard.. I have a friend thats in college for it but she is a girl and like you said in your other video if you learn from a person you will sound like them. (off topic) The guy with the glasses kind of looks like you.
Good straight info for people abroad. Alot of "teachers" (I'll use that term loosly) are too young and unsettled in their life... all party and no plan.
I've had 12 spectacular years here and they just keep getting better, although my business has nothing to do with English teaching. Love Japan!
My best advice would be to LEARN JAPANESE if you want to live any sort of meaningful life here!
@wjwildcat He just giving good advice for people traveling their dumbass. Guess what I taught myself Japanese I always put everyone else before myself and always treat everyone with respect even though I don't always get it in return. You can make it in Japan but it just takes some work and patience. So stop with your stupid generalizations. Not all of us are that stupid and ignorant as you clearly are.
Good job on researching the culture. Seems like your smart and studied up on the country before going there. I always loved Japan and I studied a little bit about their culture and watched some t.v shows. So that helped me a lot.
im surprised so many people have trouble in japan... i really had no problems whatsoever.. Came here alone 9 months ago spent a month in hokkaido then flew down to tokyo and started teaching private lessons, got up to about 15 a week with 1 class a week.. no prev teaching experience and almost no japanese experience. Now got myself a cute jap girl who speaks decent english, got my own apartment etc, no worries at all.
Dunno what the big deal is.. "not making it" was never likely!
7:29 - "It's in Japanese because it's JAPAN!" - I agree 100%. This is exactly what I've been saying all these months. Lol! Why do gaijins take their eigo to nippon? It's just stupid!
Yeah I've been asking same stuff!! I've told many Clowns over and over that they should "Humble Yourself" when it comes to respecting Japanese cultures and customs and their "egos" are wayyyyyyy too high.....
actually i have a Cross Cultural Marketing course in College (in europe) helps me a lot understanding japanese culture moreover i study their history including Shinto and Buddhism and taking Japanese courses once i'm back from my lithuanian Erasmus trip :) so i guess it will go smoothly for me :)
i know so many people talking about going to live in japan as soon they get done with school and can travel alone.and some just can a little japanese and some looks at japan as an anime or manga. :/
i really wanna go to japan to but maybe first just like a vacation, then think about it alittle more if i want to move over or something. i have to get better at studing too. :)
It's typical to for americans to assume that the world revolves around them, and when they leave the good old USA it's like going to another planet since they live inside this bubble their whole lives. The food thing is just stupid, japanese food is one of the BIG attractions for me, i absolutely love it, I'm looking forward to not eating western food for as long as i can once i get there.
"It's typical to for americans to assume that the world revolves around them, and when they leave the good old USA it's like going to another planet since they live inside this bubble their whole lives. "
Banzai!! The trick is to how to burst "bubble" American boys and girls who comes to Japan acting like they are this and that. The phrase "humble yourself" goes long long ways, and UNTESTED gets this concept. Too bad that other "Clowns" in Japan don't get it.
Well teaching mcEnglish used to be easy but I'm afraid jobs are drying up.... so people should have other options anything from making sure they know what to do with their degree but if you went to college just to BS to get a BS degree I'm not sure what other options you have....... Just be flexible from working at real McDonalds, restaurants, bars, clubs, construction, cleaning crew, etc. etc.
Learn the English language perhaps instead of demanding bilingual education in their native language using American taxpayer's money when in fact some students' parents came to America illegally?
No matter how hard you assimilate into America, American people, in general, do not accept you as one of them, because you do not speak at a native English level..so that's why we as "gaijin" in America tend to stick with other gaijins
Now, did you have hard time in Japan, did Japanese people always welcome you with open arms ? Are Japanese more friendlier than American in general..what can one learn from two distinct cultures, America and Japan ?
"why we as "gaijin" in America tend to stick with other gaijins"
Interesting point you made but just curious as to even though other immigrants stick with together(aka Gaijins in America), some seems to outdo American people in terms of college degrees and post graduate degrees so in a way they've succeeded. I know lots of Indians and other Asians friends do have so called "accent" but they are outdoing majority people in America in terms of education, degrees, etc. etc.
Every cultures have pluses and minuses. The trick is to best to make out of every good/bad situation. Interesting point when you mentioned "open arms" since not everybody will accept you with "Open Arms". If a Japanese person goes to Detroit, and brags about Japanese cars to the people who lost the jobs to Toyota and Honda how will they treat him/her? If American goes to Japan, and brags about America this and that, how will ordinary Japanese react?
this is a great video cause its soo freaking true and if any1 thinks any of it is wrong... stay in ur country
im moving to japan after college to teach english and currently what i am dreading is not being able to eat many foods, so i am trying to adapt else i be like the guy in the video, no turkey? nooooo
LMAO!! You'll be fine..... Hey McDonalds, mos burger, pasta, etc. etc. Yeah no turkey but so what? You might get lucky if you get to know someone from U.s. Bases if you decide to live near Tokyo since they do have Thanksgiving Dinner.
You speak very eloquently, with little to no stutter, and you communicate yourself extremely well.
I just came from seeing racist videos and seeing racist comments pointed to asian cultures and it is refreshing to see that a person (regardless of colour) being respectful to another culture.
Your points are absolutely spot on and I'm a Chinese person (the westernized one, not the stereotyped Chinese that fail to understand rules and regulations). Learn the language!
Thanks for your comments!! He and few others do respect our cultures and customs instead of "Clowns" who comes to my country thinking they are this and that and act like Big Fish in our small pond but they are not even close to big fish from their native country. I guess the phrase "humble yourself" goes long ways.
@novajoke You are certainly humble speaking and very unassuming. It's great! You are a great role model for the youngsters (I would certainly fit under this category)
lol I would have thought people anywhere would get told off for shouting at other employee's and being overly aggressive. I can't believe people would do that thinking they could get away with it!
From what i've seen I think Japan have the most unattractive, horrendous looking gaijins in the world, but no matter how ugly and non fluent you are at the Japanese language you are still most likely to find a Japanese girlfriend/wife. that's the main reason most foreigners go there is find a japanese girlfriend... my god it's really sad how Japan is changing, i've noticed some ultra strange looking hafu children that looked anything except Japanese :{ Japan is so DOOMED. (America Number 2)
I don't judge by people's looks but yeah they are definitely "rejects" from their native countries though especially the mcEikaiwa Sensei Clowns as well as clowns whoe comes to Japan just to jack around.....
Thank you for being such a realistic, down to Earth guy! I'm tired of so many gaijin going over and misrepresenting their country due to horrible manners, etc. I'm intending to go on the JET programme once I graduate from college (if they haven't abolished it by then) and your suggestions are extremely valuable.
I agree with sudden outburst and maintaining your cool. I think that is something that could be adapted from other countries. But I have a question, does maintaining your cool apply with your friends when you hang out or hen your at home? Because I want to know if its wrong to behave like that in work only? I'm just curious.
great video man, subbed earlier today and have been stuck to my computer screen watching your vids lol. I plan to do some vlogs, as I am learning japanese, the language, and the culture, not in Japan... yet, but the time will come sometime in the near future I hope :)
Lol I use to want to go to Japan because of anime but now That i am older and slightly wiser I want to go to experience their culture, I'm an introvert and never been much of a troublemaker so perhaps it will be easier for me? XD Also, I want to get away from home, I've ALWAYS been surrounded and supported by family ALWAYS, but I know that i can make it if i work at it instead of sitting on my ass. I'm studying up as much as i can and your channel is gonna help me a lot! (^-^)
Mr. Scott will you discus Joge Kankei (vertical relationship). How there is a pecking order (sempai&kohai) and that as a gaijin you will be kohai no matter what your degree is. You touched on it a little when you talked about public anger but as a gaijin we need to know our role and don't try to go beyond it, because it may start a lot of drama. How the group is more important then the one, that is sometimes very hard for westerns to understand. It may help in understanding the Japanese. Thanks
When you say gaijin are you including the Indians that come over for IT jobs or the German interns at BMW or American lawyers/bankers etc? Also, our Nigerian friends down in the Pong. You should make that '80 percent of Western English teachers' don't make it past their first year. Not shitting on your video dude just sayin.
@gyozajoe obviously not a vid aimed at such a crowd. if you already speak fluent japanese and work in one of those niche fields you are probably not one of 59820958340 emails i get everyday asking I can haz video game job?
But I have a question for you, I'm coming to Tokyo in about a week, I will have enough currency to pay for my apartment and probably groceries while I'm there... but seeing as I don't want to be a hermit in my apartment the whole time, I'll need to get some more to be able to go meet up with my friends... where can I withdrawal currency by using my visa (linked to American account)
And do you think 2 years of on/off studying will be sufficient for about a month?
@LetsBurnSomething here in osaka i would say citibank, but there might be a better option in tokyo. good luck with your journey make sure to make vids and join our small j-vlog community!
Alright, I'll check into it, I'm bringing some extra usd in case I can get it at Narita. But yeah, even though I'll only be there for a month, I'll try to make a few videos. I plan on taking quite a few pictures, so I may make a small montage as well. Thanks for the info! I leave tomorrow morning, so hopefully I can get it converted somewhere lol
The pages to scroll through the comments don't seem to be working for me right now so i'm sorry if it's been asked but; how do the japanese respond to your plugs/earrings? For work and such do you remove them or anything such as that? Thanks in advance.
If you're not Black, you can make it in japan. You're right that most whites in japan have an entitlement complex, yet complain about the same thing in Blacks!
The white japanophile is the ultimate anti-Black racist.
@chefawkes Don't worry dude, japan is not as racist as America. Black people are treated exactly the same. There is alot of racist fucks on the internet, that will lie and tell you that Japanese people don't like blacks. Truth is most Japanese people do, some dont though, but very few. Don't listen to @NewKokujinOptions. Japan is totally different than the states. send me a message if you want me to send you some videos of my black friends in Japan. They live there, and have amazing lives!
You are one of the few people who don't sound like "haha, I know everything better than you, because I am in Japaaaan". I really feel that you know what you are talking about (and you are so right anyway, haha).
I think some of the people I know should watch this video, for their own sake. ;-)
(But, although I just graduaded from college and I am 22 years old, I try to crack the 6-months limit this year lol)
The first part was really hilarious :) Everything you said here is real!!! Ugh, i can still remember my first few months here..but everything is well now and besides, learning Japanese is really exciting and fun. I can have a basic conversation in Japanese now :) I guess the only thing that is hard here in Japan is loneliness.
What REALLY worries me is the ethnic homogenity and the possibility that I will be treated as a foreigner for the duration of my stay, be it 2 weeks or a lifetime.
The news that permanent residents will soon be able to become naturalized (rather than alien citizens) is somewhat of a relief.
im already a very quiet person so the cultural never reall worried me... but that launguage barrier... id have to study some basic words and phrases before any plans to live in japan are made. bathroom is def first on the list XD.
... ooh speaking, god damn chili cheese burger........
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
THE REASON GAIJINS DON'T MAKE IT IN JAPAN IS BECAUSE THEY ARE PATHETIC LOSER PIECES OF TRASH WITH THIS DIRTY FUCKIN SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT OF FOREIGNESS. iN REALITY YOU MIGHT GET YOUR HEAD CHOPPED OFF BY NIHONJIN YUKUZAS. DON'T DARE TO ACT LIKE A FREE INDIVIDUAL PERSON WITH IN YOUR FACE AMERICAN ATTITUDE IN JAPAN. HOW DARE YOU.
people even some teenagers...like some anime freaks..>_> think that japan is like america with japanese people...it's so stupid!..and yeah don't expect people to always speak english to you if they are in their own country...say japan, vietnam, korea, philippines, malaysia, france, sweden, etc!!
I think lot of Americans know this by now. in reality, citizens there are pscyhologically sick and insecure. It might seem a paradise on the outward but in the inside, life is hell for the Japanese people
Yeah and you're a typical fat, stupid American, nvm the fact that not all North Americans are from USA. Only a racist like you would be impervious to the convolution between cultures. Logic 101: Not all Asians are Japanese.
True, but Japan is more "Gaijin-ist" than "Racist" lol, I honestly still don't know what a "Race" is lol! Japanese don't care if you look similar to them, and outsider is an outsider, once they find out you're Korean or Chinese and NOT Japanese, they still feel weird about it. So it's more Xenophobia as supposed to "Racism"....w/e that is...lol!
The advice in this video put me at ease (wanting to go to Japan myself), though your tone came off as very patronising and it was somewhat uncomfortable to listen to...
that made me laugh the way you said "its in japanese, 'cause its in japan" haha sounds obvious, but you make a good point. many westerners hear things about japanese being all about our culture, which may be an influence in many ways, but its NOT america over there lol. people need to get it through thier head they are going to ANOTHER country. its going to be DIFFERENT... it IS japan =) haha... great vid!
You know what I feel when i hear all these Gaijin racist comments? I feel dissapointment.
I love Japanese history almost as much as my Celtic history. Really, I respect Japanese culture alot, but if a Japanese person racically discriminated me when i'm in Uni over there, I will not be afriad to bite back in any way possible even though i'm not someone who would. I'm Welsh with Irish blood, it's what we do. Anyway, we put up with the English ages anyway. Lol.
Never accepted, always looked at with suspicion and distrust, made fun of, stupid picture requests, talking to you like a child, etc.. Doesn't matter how fluent you are, you're always going to be an outsider. I changed my mind about Japan after seeing how much they treat gaijin like shit. I never treat foreigners the way they treat us over there..
What are you talkign about? A lot of foreigners in North America get treated as outsiders too. Some are treated equal and some aren't. Same in Japan except they aren't used to seeing as many different races as here in Canada or the United States.
Let's talk about 20% that do make it................yeah they got nothing better else to do besides teach mcEikaiwa in Japan. WTF? yes you can get Happy Meals, pizza-la, etc. WFT again? You don't have to know Japanese to live in Japan. Bank accounts, cell phones? Just ask your Japanese students or friends! "Got fired by coming to work drunk"??? Gee there wouldn't be any left if everyone got fired drunk!
Thank you for the video. I don't think my country is a perfect place, but as a Japanese I am glad there are people like you who actually respects the way we are.
I actually want to go to Japan due to half of this. Came out of college with a Japanese minor in language and culture. My language skills have diminished greatly but still served me rather well in a bilingual city like Tokyo. I want to go back to fully immerse in that as well as the culture. Can't stand American in-your-face attitude. I hate being that way, so I felt more expressive when quiet when I visited Tokyo.
you will still be better off than most gaijin coming over here that knowledge. sadly some never learn a single word of japanese during their entire stay. but sounds like you will do fine.
I am Japanese and I want all foreigners to understand what Japan is.
basically, Japan has one race. not like europe, or Us or Malaysia where I have lived in before. So unless you are Korean or chinese, its easy to see if you are Gaijin or Nihonjin.
I know some ppl get offended when they hear Gaijin but its a short term for Gaikokujin(foreigner) and not many ppl meant to be rasist or mean when they say.
I think you are speaking the truth alltogether. I would like to live in Japan, but I I've understood that it's enough to go there as a tourist. I respect their culture, but I'm not sure I would adapt. I think admitting that downside is good. "Gaijin" is not a bad word though there is a person who is misunderstanding.
"外(gai)"="outer, another, other, different"
"外(gai)人(jin)"="Foreigner, Person in other country"
"外(gai)国(koku)"="Foreign country"
"外(gai)貨(ka)"="Foreign currency"
"外(gai)車(sha)"="Foreign-made car, Imported car"
"Gaijin" was US soldier for a long time. Problem is there?

Good straight info for people abroad. Alot of "teachers" (I'll use that term loosly) are too young and unsettled in their life... all party and no plan.
I've had 12 spectacular years here and they just keep getting better, although my business has nothing to do with English teaching. Love Japan!
My best advice would be to LEARN JAPANESE if you want to live any sort of meaningful life here!
klebash 1 year ago
@wjwildcat He just giving good advice for people traveling their dumbass. Guess what I taught myself Japanese I always put everyone else before myself and always treat everyone with respect even though I don't always get it in return. You can make it in Japan but it just takes some work and patience. So stop with your stupid generalizations. Not all of us are that stupid and ignorant as you clearly are.

im surprised so many people have trouble in japan... i really had no problems whatsoever..

It's typical to for americans to assume that the world revolves around them, and when they leave the good old USA it's like going to another planet since they live inside this bubble their whole lives.

Just be flexible from working at real McDonalds, restaurants, bars, clubs, construction, cleaning crew, etc. etc.

This is off topic but,
How do you give advice to someone who is trying to assimilate into America
mostupdate 1 year ago
@mostupdate
Learn the English language perhaps instead of demanding bilingual education in their native language using American taxpayer's money when in fact some students' parents came to America illegally?
novajoke 1 year ago
@novajoke
Are Japanese more friendlier than American in general..what can one learn from two distinct cultures, America and Japan ?
and how can we improve from there
mostupdate 1 year ago

"why we as "gaijin" in America tend to stick with other gaijins"
Interesting point you made but just curious as to even though other immigrants stick with together(aka Gaijins in America), some seems to outdo American people in terms of college degrees and post graduate degrees so in a way they've succeeded. I know lots of Indians and other Asians friends do have so called "accent" but they are outdoing majority people in America in terms of education, degrees, etc. etc.
novajoke 1 year ago
@mostupdate

Thanks

basically, Japan has one race. not like europe, or Us or Malaysia where I have lived in before. So unless you are Korean or chinese, its easy to see if you are Gaijin or Nihonjin.
I know some ppl get offended when they hear Gaijin but its a short term for Gaikokujin(foreigner) and not many ppl meant to be rasist or mean when they say.
