I remember that episode. The funniest part is when he saved that hostage dude from getting shot, then moved him aside and started yelling at him. I know it's just a show but he was looking crazy like he was about to force that dude to do something messed up. mr. bell/sisko: "now i'm gonna lower your head, and then i'm gonna take off my BELT, and you're gonna give it to me!"
social worker hostage dude: "ahh, don't make me ahh, no!"
Sisko:"you're gonna give it to me, gonna GIVE IT to me!!!"
@wijayapala It's never been fully explained. WWIII happens around 2060, Cochrane makes first contact in 2063, and apparently humanity wakes up and realizes there is other intelligent life in the galaxy, we've got to get our stuff together down here.
Did you see what can happen what hate campaign can do? If palin or any other paleo-conservative get's the next presidency the US lose their role as leading power of the world. Get your head out of the sand, and take a look arround the puritan pilgrimage time is over.
Being from Santa Monica I can explain the attitude towards the homeless.
In Santa Monica the majority of homeless people find it more beneficial to stay on the street instead of get a job and maintain a home. You may disbelieve it, I've never had a homeless person accept food that they were given, only money. This is because food is free out of the dumpster, but they need money for alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. You won't find a homeless person starving in Santa Monica.
One of the many things that I loved about these episodes is that the fact that Sanctuary District is an innocuous sounding name which belies their really quite dark nature. Not only the Mayor of Los Angeles' use of the word "haven," actually. It reminds me of that great line from Dickens about the poor and the workhouses: "If they would rather die, they had better do it and decrease the surplus population."
yep, every day things look more and more like Past Tense. I guess we can take some consolation from the notion that Earth eventually becomes united but in Star Trek, they don't begin the era of communion with people in outer Space until they solve this problem on Earth.
I agree. And I'm afraid ch0p86 is correct we are letting it happen.
I know, usually, "Star Trek" doesn't do predicting or forecasting, that well -- but I can see us coming to this point by September 1, 2024 in the U.S. and possibly a few other countries.
And have other people ever heard of the concept that a country or civilization isn't judged by how they deal w/ the heartiest of people -- but by the least amongst us.
@whatever30345 The irony is that in this episode they were saying how Europe was falling apart...well theyre starting to fall apart apart right now with half of the countries bankrupt or close to it.
This last sentence was the best one ever on Star Trek and the entire episode is one of the best ones I've ever seen...really makes you think, doesn't it??
Congratulations! You are a typical Republican - and precisely the reason why the GOP has become little more than a regional, fringe party of narrow minded bigots (as reflected by the electoral map).
I'm sure it will. Now, why don't you go back to plucking your banjo, planning your marriage to your cousin, and ordering another bagful of McDonald's? I'm sure that by the time you're done with all of that, your precious 4th Reich will have already started correcting all sorts of problems.
sieg heil! sieg heil! In the new order people like you are enemies of the state. Fags are a cancer and San Francisco is the perfect place to wall them up.
This is the Best Star Trek episode of all time. The issue it explores is crucial to our lives and the ramifications for the Star Trek Universe were the greatest as well.
@Ruhnald I'm watching this episode now. It's coming to fruition now. People saying things need to change, people need jobs, places to live, debt cancelation, remedies for mental disorders and for those witholding it all turning blind eyes and hearts. They should rerun both parts of this episode on Lifetime or some other channel.
Past Tense Parts 1 and 2 are great episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", not only about time travel, but an episode that shows the issues of poverty and a lot of social issues, too. A very touching episode. The guests stars are great, character actor Dick Miller is superb as Vin, a Sanctuary District guard, Bill Smitrovich as Michael Webb, Tina Lifford as Lee, and Clint Howard as Dim who thinks aliens are bout to invade. This episode is one that should have gotten an award.

How could they have let things get so bad?! Greed, corruptions & selfishness will all lead to that.

So how did humanity actually solve the problem of homelessness??

Avery Brooks is so different from the character he plays, it's weird seeing interviews with him.

Yeah, straight people like me sure are enemies of state. Better start rounding up the straight people. I'll start at the college parties.
