my friends african grey roars so loud when anyone (including my friend the owner) goes near his cage. He roars so loud and stays roaring or until you move away. I mean like REALLY LOUD, when he roars neighbors a block away call us up...
not all birds are alike. the growl is very common in Grey's. but not something they have to do to be normal. you just haven't found anything that really makes him mad, or scared.
When he gets mad he clucks & makes raspberry noises. My parents say he growls a bit, but I make it a point not to upset him, or scare him. I've taken a bite to the face and I'm good with remaining on his good side. (I swear he was jealous of all the attention our U2 was getting so he bit me).
Also we've had him since he was a baby, and he's used to all the noises and things that come in and out of our house.
Wait, he has growled at my Grandma. Good bird, I hate my Grandma.
my african grey jus loves to scream high pitch sounds an loves chickhen, beef, sheep cooked...she loves her protain buy hates fruit an veg an will only eat it wen ders no other option... an has a sharp sence of smell an she even knows when im high...i luv her...
If they are hurting them selves, you should remove it. You can put it near the cage, for a while so they can get use to it. Maybe move it closer and closer every few days. Until they stop being afraid. My grey hated the color red at one point. But she got over it in time.
Tangalo rarely growls but for some reason she did not like the doll I was holding. The sound is so interesting I had to get it on tape but I have never shown her that toy again, it was obviously upsetting her.
Grey are also known for plucking, they can be nervious birds, in reaction to their environment or people, they can pluck. Sometime they let new feather grow back fully, then pluck again. Of course plucking can be many things, including diet or other medical issues. it's a good idea to take him for a vet check.
Greys are very smart, and great pets. But they tend to be stand offish. It could take a while for him to calm down. It could even be the location of his cage. If possible, talk to the previous owner and find out where his cage was and if there was anything that frightened the bird.
They growl when they are upset/ mad or scared/frightened. If he is new it might take some time for him to get use to you and the new environment. If he is growling at something you are doing, or maybe something by his cage is freaking him out. but if he growls I would defiantly stop what ever your doing to get him upset. You will need to gain his trust slowly.
i Just Brought an African grye today he Growls if Anyone Comes Near Him and His Feathers Have Been Plucked But There Growing Back, Wll he Ever Stop Growling? please Help
i bought an african grey 2 weeks ago and she was only 11 weeks old. she growled for the first day but you should try and stroke your african grey to so he or she knows they can trust you
My African Grey, Toby, growls like this, too. When he's frightened enough, his growl goes up into almost a low-pitched scream. If I'm introducing him to a new toy, he won't growl at it, but he'll avoid it like the plague. xD Tangalo is gorgeous, by the way. (:

my wild caught african grey does this all the time towards unknown male people especially. I'm now going to try and teach him to wear a harness...

As I wonder if something is wrong with our Grey, he never growls. He just flips out and flies away.
