Just curious why Ptolemy's model is considered bad science (by whom?), because it did fit his observations right? We know it to be wrong now, but was there any evidence he was glossing over when he made his model?
@Daruqe Its bad science because he began with initial presuppositions and set out to conform his model to those presuppositions, rather than purely the observations. I would still consider him to be a remarkable scientist.
if you imagian the massive universe the earth is completely insegnificant peice of nothing, if we all died in a massive nukelear war anyone or anything wouldn't notice or care
I just want to make clear that there are people out there who believe in God, but are not close minded to facts and mysteries concerning life and the Universe. (I happen to be one). I am Spiritual; not religious, and I do believe in a God (in the sense of a Supreme Creator; not man's interpretation) and I also am considering going into astrophysics. There are people who can be spiritual and rashional at the same time. Not all of us are "primitive religious" people. :)
If you are not close minded to facts and logic, which facts and logic guide you to spirituality and a belief in a supreme creator? I for one have seen absolutely no evidence or even mild suggestions towards such things.
In fact if human beings before you hadn't come up with the story, written it down, and verbally conveyed it to you either as a child or later on, you would have absolutely no concept of god or religion.
@SeriousRetail91 I'm not religious; I'm spiritual. And my concept of "God" isn't some old dude off in the shy watching us all to see if we are to be put on the "naughty or nice" list. "God" to me it the Source of all Creation. The intricate Force, Unseen Divinity that gives us life. We are all alive and have conscious because a Divine Source. No one had to tell me this; there's evidence all around. The delicate balance and order of the Universe itself isn't an accident; it was created. :)
@SpiritualGurl1990 You see, thats where you`re wrong. There is absolutely no sound evidence suggesting a divine creator. You are merely taking in the universes perfection and balance as proof when it is in fact not.
When we study these systems and actually extract evidence and measurable, fact from them, it is revealed that only systems that have such delicate balance manage to survive. Therefore at this point in history, these systems have been around long enough to evolve into sustainability.

It's rumoured that Galileo whispered this under his breath after the Catholic Church threatened him into denying heliocentrism. They forced him to announce that the Earth is stationary, but of course he knew better.
In Denmark we have a similar story (or a rumor) of Galileo saying something about "But the world is round" the church also having threatened him to deny the world is round.
uh-oh. I just noticed a big mistake. Retrograde motion is in regard to the motion of planets with respect to the stars, not with respect to diurnal motion. Those retrograde motion pictures were taken over several nights, at the same time, to freeze diurnal motion.

Great presentation. You have helped me get a better understanding of the illusion that astrologers call retrograde motions. An illusion they give great meaning to.

AW: I do have one small, perhaps schoolmarmish, quibble with your classification scheme -- you place astrometry & celestial mechanics under the heading of astrophysics. ...cont from previous: But by standard definition, astrophysics is the study of the properties & composition of celestial bodies, & really begins with the advent of spectroscopy, specifically Huggins study of solar spectra in 1860s. Modern cosmology is a branch of astrophysics founded by Einsteins seminal 1917 paper. So your terminology seems rather idiosyncratic to me, but could it be that i am in fact the one who is "lost in space" regarding these labels? ;-)
Here in the USA/Canada, the PBS network will broadcast a special, "400 Years of the Telescope" on April 10, hosted by the incomparable communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson, marking the end of the "100 Hours of Astronomy" marathon. Presumably it will shortly be aired in UK, Australia, NZ too. Check your local tv listings.
AW: Kudos! I have mailed this video to every astronomy buff i know, and i urge others to do likewise. Part 2 is much more substantive than Part 1, and this is developing into an outstanding series; i hope it will be available on dvd upon completion. What a splendid tie-in to International Year of Astronomy, celebrating the quadricentennial of Galileo's first telescopic observations and Kepler's landmark Astronomia Nova.
yep all in all great stuff. pity i can only get part 1 downloaded. copy protection yet it says its free and avail;able to any1. i know folk who would love to see this but won't take the time to sit infront of a pc ( as they r terrified of them) would love to see it on a bluray or somethin on a big tv
A very good, aesthetically pleasing work. Though, perhaps I would have liked to have seen greater discussion to ancient problems with Ptolemaic astronomy, notably its need for a major update/overhaul just centuries after its founding by astronomers such as the under-known, brilliant, FEMALE (a rarity to still be known) ancient astronomer/philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria. (Her death is far more saddening & scientifically frustrating than Galileo's famous imprisonment.)
In a future episode, I'm dealing more directly with celestial mechanics and it does include Laplace. I skipped over it briefly here, because Astrometry constitutes thousands of years of astronomy, whereas CM is a fairly recent, few hundred year old science.
Fair enough, I just wanted to make sure Laplace wasn't thrown on the back burner. His working into fixing planets orbit by perturbation theory was quite impressive.
As I understand it, you are the owner of League of Reason. Great site, btw.
omg that was amazing i wish i could do that but me i know how to do very few thing haha but ya cudos to you ... i think imma try to learn to do that [=
In 1/6 of an hour you have taken me on an enlighten tour, one that 4 years of high school could not do. Some may complain that you left this or that out, but I believe that your recipe is almost perfect! I salute this presentation, Maestro!
Just one thing, for me Newton is the greatest person who ever lived. But, in your video he seems almost like having a bit part. Hope you give him more credit on the next video.
I have one minor question about your classification of the subfields -- wouldnt astrometry still be considered classical positional astronomy, while celestial mechanics plus stellar (& galactic) composition, evolution, etc would comprise astrophysics proper? Cosmology is theoretical astrophysics on the grandest scale of space & time. Planetology (missing from the chart) studies the geology & meteorology of substellar bodies. Astrobiology is so far a science without a subject - but not for long!
I do wish you had explained just what Kepler's three laws were, especially since the third is so aesthetically pleasing in its relationship between planetary distances & orbital periods, which on the surface would seem to be unrelated, and this handed Newton a vital clue to the law of gravitational attraction. BTW, shouldnt Laplace also be in the celestial mechanics pantheon, along with Newton, Lagrange (who made his points in a balanced fashion -- all five of them) & Einstein?
Truly masterful presentation, AW! I give it 5 hypergiant stars! Richly informative, graphically appealing & very well-edited. The music is OK, but i agree with those who find its volume too high relative to the narration. Its wonderful to take a historical approach in which we see our growing knowledge of the universe expand outward almost literally from our terrestrial home into the celestial realm. Just a beautiful series and i hungrily anticipate future installments.
God is HOLY, which means He cannot look at sin with pleasure. God Hates EVIL, He's UNIQUE and BEYOND man's own comprehension though. There is no one like God from the Scriptures. He is absolutely distinct from creation, He is sacred and No One can manipulate His finger. There's a problem, You are EVIL. MAN are EVIL. I am EVIL. NO ONE IS PERFECT, NOT EVEN ONE!
GOD SEND JESUS CHRIST AS A PROPITIATION FOR OUR SINS SO YOU COULD GO TO HEAVEN BUT IF YOU TO GO TO HELL, THAT'S NOT MY PROBLEM

Wow, when this series is done, I think you should seriously consider submitting it to channel 13, the discovery channel, NGC, etc. Excellent work.

Good video, but I don't like the way you pronounce Tycho Brahe. :(
I could learn you the 'proper' danish pronunciation.

After watching this twice, why did you not include Laplace?
Laplace's works were, too, completely necessary for our total understanding of celestial mechanics.
lol, I know this is a minor point, but it is worth pointing out.
WizardofCalculus 2 years ago
In a future episode, I'm dealing more directly with celestial mechanics and it does include Laplace. I skipped over it briefly here, because Astrometry constitutes thousands of years of astronomy, whereas CM is a fairly recent, few hundred year old science.

well get to work man we are waiting! :P

Fair enough, I just wanted to make sure Laplace wasn't thrown on the back burner. His working into fixing planets orbit by perturbation theory was quite impressive.
As I understand it, you are the owner of League of Reason. Great site, btw.

In 1/6 of an hour you have taken me on an enlighten tour, one that 4 years of high school could not do. Some may complain that you left this or that out, but I believe that your recipe is almost perfect! I salute this presentation, Maestro!

Great video man.

I really liked the music (as in all other videos you made). It fits into the "universe". But I think the volume should be decreased a little.
