I have started doing this on every bill I receive. By the way, did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic insomniac? He lays awake at night wondering if there really IS a Dog.
I wonder if one of those money counter machines could be modified to systematically mark out the phrase for big wads of cash. I got a lot of money, so this would be a lot of work for me.
After seeing this video, I took my bold marker, marked it out of the bills, walked a mile to Walgreen's, and used that money to buy more markers. Lawl.
Well I love America. What made it seem like I don't? If there's a problem, and there are, we should try to fix it. Talking about a problem and a way to fix it isn't the same as saying "I hate America."
I believe in people, and often, people make mistakes. Religion is one of those mistakes.
I don't trust in gods. The motto we had before that was better: E. Pluribus Unum, which means "From many come one." That's unifying, and doesn't address religion.
Religion divides. If we avoid religion, we avoid yet another reason to divide ourselves.
I believe in lots of things. People want a higher power...Nature is more powerful than any human. How about that? I acknowledge the supreme power of nature, the universe itself.
Ok cool. Well I believe that everyone should have a right to believe what they want, even if it offends the majority. We used to say "It's a free country." but we don't say that so much these days.
I believe that every person has an inherant value from birth, and that most people are basically good deep down inside.
@aajoeyjo I've always thought it would be so much better if they printed a slogan like 'peace on earth' or 'united we stand' -just a positive and secular statement that would be all inclusive, but for now I'll guess we'll just have to use our magic markers!
I think God is an Idea, not a being. If we are nice to eachother, not only do we make others fell good, but ourselves. Im sorta still on the fence about the whole God thing.
For sure, being nice to people is not the exclusive domain of religion. In fact, Christians have been very mean to me over the years. I don't see any relation between religion and being nice.
True. Religion whould have been good, put into the propper hands. If it came from love, and some invisible man wouldnt threating to kick your ass if you are bad, and it didnt collect money or fund wars...but that is a different subject all together...LOL. Take care.
Soupy Okay now why? What's good about that phrase on government property? What's good about the government propping up religion like that? What's good about having an all-powerful god's name on that currency when the value of that the dollar is steadily declining?
please understand it has much to do with tradition, when the government mentions god but they don't force it upon you do they, has a government official told you while working that you should be christian. seriously have you? sure you entertain the idea for a thrill be; you're a non-comformist, i ask you what do you think you are accomplishing, nothing.
As an atheist, I think that what you're doing is respectable. However, as you said, it's a drop in the bucket. What are the long term goals? Those who don't believe in God or subscribe to faith are the most untrusted minority in the US. How about the pretty large propaganda machine against atheism as well as scientific theories? I'm just curious what you think about these things.
SkinnerRichard Well I've made a lot of other videos about other issues we Atheist activists talk about. One long term goal is to sustain the effort. All efforts toward Atheist civil rights and state/church separation. Across the board opposition to all govt. religion, and lawful ways to address the problem. That's for now, and there are other goals for later.
its sad to say but radicals/extremists hurt all people, not saying there are more athiest extremist but americans see what the media portrays. please understand, i disagree with you on religion yet i respect that you have a stance
Nope I didn't say that, and you seem to want Atheist activism to be a crime. That makes you a traitor to the cause, or just another wacko Christian. So zap!
voice your opinion all you want, after all this is america, but know i disagree. I at least respect that you have a stance and aren't closed to the world like many of an group
Yes, you're wanting Atheists to keep quiet while religious groups run all over our rights and ignore state/church separation. That's what the Nazis did, with terrible results. Resistance is the key to keeping freedoms alive. Why don't you go back to church?
phlegmuffin - Exactly. You're just like those good Germans who said "Just go along. Fit in with society. Your concerns about Hitler are insignificant. People shouldn't complain about silly little things like that. You're efforts are a joke..."
phlegmuffin - Some of us Atheists have had religion forced on us quite a bit. I'm glad that didn't happen to you. Otherwise you'd reject religion from our goverment. This phrase was enabled by a "law respecting an establishment of religion." No self respecting Atheist would lie down and accept that from any government.
Brooks00000 Yes I'm finding that there are lots of people who do this that we weren't aware of, and they just felt inspired to do it on their own! Logic is the common denominator. Thanks for helping out!
Joe, I did this today. I have been inspired to mark out in "god we trust" on my money by your videos. I have also seen some outher great vids by Atheists crossing out "in god we trust" on our money and have been inspired by them too. thank you for your vids.
slayer3306---Apparently there are a lot more of us than was previously thought. The impressive sales of several Atheists' books recently shows an undercurrent of interest in our movement, as well as a larger movement to begin with.
A few questions Joe. Your t-shirt says 1963 to 1993. Is this video 14 years old? Does the American Atheist Assoc. not know how to count? Or, are you simply under the impression that it is still 1993 (as your pony tail would suggest)? Don't hurt yourself trying to answer. God bless!
UnclePhungus--LOL! Good question. Actually I collect t-shirts, especially the Atheist activist type, so I have several older t-shirts that are kind of rare. American Atheists has newer ones on sale, and in some of my other videos you can see 'em. Regarding hair, didn't Jesus have long hair? Hmmm? And George Washington, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain...and hey! Penn Gillette. Okay.
hey dude just watched u'r video and have 2 say do u not think is weird that athists (like u'r self)
would go out of their way 2 disprove God or sctrach the name out on your money. see what worries me as a free thinker is athism is nearly turning in2 a relgion. all my atheists freinds go metal at me trying 2 prove God that it make me think "if u'r so sure why do u care so much?" remember as Socrates said "one thing i know is that i know nothing"
Jack63815---Well we're not trying to disprove God, first of all. Sure, it may seem like that, but we discuss a lot of things. We don't have any burden of disproving anything. So that's not our bag. The In God We Trust on our money is illegal, so we're fixing that, slowly. Observing and combating religion does not make us religious.
no don't get more me wrong i'm not being critical i'm just pointing out that it seem u'r going out of u'r way 2 be anti-relgion. u'r not one of these atheists that are extreme in fairness but many atheists i know are terrified when u changelle their views. i guess so are alot of relgious people as well and its knida weird how similiar they are if they don't like 2 admit it.
Atheism is not a religion or even a belief system, it is a disbelief system. The literal translation of the root term "atheist" means without belief in God(s). What you are is an Anti-theist, someone who is against a belief in God and, by association, against all those who believe in God. So was Hitler. So was Stalin. So was Mao...... Good company.
UnclePhungus--Do your research. See the pro-godism of Hitler and the Nazis, and learn about how Stalin made himself into a man-god on Earth. Same with Mao, plus Communism is not the same as Atheism. Go complain about Communism and fascism to Communists and fascists please. Atheism is rationalism plus reality.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH HAHAHAHA!!!!!! You're a moron. Hitler was in bed with the Catholic church the entire time. Stalin and Mao simply used atheism as a form of government control. Not something I agree with whatsoever. I would never want government to force people from not worshipping. My feelings of worship that it's ridiculous has nothing to do with how Stalin and Mao forced it on the people. Hitler is inapplicable because he was very much pro theist.
jjustinsc---Because we care. It's a culture war. We're involved. Religion is a problem that still causes harm, right here in America, and we're going to say so. Why do you support the violations of the law involving religion that we're protesting? Did you ever hear of King George of England? America has state/church separation because people religious leaders like him spoil things when in power. What's to give up on, liberty? Ourselves? America? Please.
"In God We Trust" is hardly causing "harm" to you or anyone. You say that religion causes so many problems, but every organization, club, religion, etc. has it's extremists. I'm sure there is even an atheist organization out there that has burned down a church or two. Religion is not the problem my friend. It is the fact that we as human beings find it so hard to agree with each other, and that's good because without different views the world would be a very boring place.
jjustinsc---Ok, what if it were changed to read "In Satan We Trust."? It would be just as inaccurate, but wouldn't it bother you? The harm is when government and religion become one. History shows clearly that melding government and religion is a deadly mistake. We all get along better when the are limitations on each. Rational limitations.
You're right, I would be offended by "In Satan We Trust" but I would be just as offended to see "In God We Trust" marked out with a sharpie. It's degrading my beliefs just the same as it degrades yours. So even though you think you're helping by doing this, you're imposing your atheistic beliefs on everyone who gets your marked up money. Let the courts decide friend.
justinsc---The Constitution already prohibits Congress from doing what it did to put that religious phrase on our money. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." Well they did just that, several times. Christianity relies on law-breaking.
it's not imposing atheistic beliefs. it's removing the sanctioning of religion by government. of course, it is not a sanction of a specific theistic religion. but it is theistic. which is a brand of religion itself. it shouldn't offend your feelings to not have government endorse religion. government (federal reserve actually) made the money, you didn't.
Thrashaero-Do you honestly think removing "In God We Trust" from our money is gonna solve anything other than atheists bitchin' on youtube?...NO. There are a lot more problems to be dealt with other than a group of people *cough atheists cough* who blame God for all their problems and feel they complain about it to the whole world.
No but it's perfectly legal, shouldn't be there, and if you don't like it...get out of America and move to somewhere else that the government is legally allowed to sanction religion. Yeah...there are a lot bigger problems than we atheists....like you theists who like to start wars and be condescending to everyone who questions your precious, unfounded beliefs.
Yeah you're right. there are major problems bigger than we pesky atheists....like the problems we bitch about. being religion. which happens to be a source of division and conflict. solves zero problems and creates very huge ones. Marking it off the money is perfectly legal. IF you want your government to legally sanction religion...get out of America.
Thrashaero-It's only a problem because atheists make it a problem by BITCHING to our government about it. How is religion (Christianity to be specific) not solving problems. If you consider feeding starving children or sheltering the homeless a problem then why don't YOU get out of America and move to Niger where you can be with the non-existent problem.
feeding starving children, sheltering the homeless, at the same time selling them a religion is a problem. secular groups do the same in bigger quantities without a religion attached. any amount of prayer to god doesn't fix shit beyond prayer to a garbage can. they should be doing good regardless, not because a holy book said so.
The answer that religious people give for how god answers prayers is...yes, no, and wait. In that case, you could pray to ANYTHING and these conditions apply. I could pray to a garbage can, and the same results come of praying to a god. Why not just meditate instead? That's all you're basically doing is trying to get a shortcut to your subconscious by talking to yourself through a mental device as god.
yeah. i'm an idiot. thanks for proving my point right by just ending it with zero argument from you and just calling names. so sorry you can't handle reality staring you in the face. truth can't be told it must be realized.
jjustinsc---It's reality, not just a personal experience. It's the results of scientific studies done on the efficacy of prayer. There simply is none. What fixes things is action.
aajoeyjo-I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. I hope one day you'll all find what you're truly seeking, and find that happiness that makes your lives whole...I know I have...
"hope one day you'll all find what you're truly seeking"
What makes you think we are looking for something? We aren't. That's the point. We aren't looking for make-believe solutions to real problems. Also, I like the fact that you use 'fuk' in your first post. Typical hypocritical xtian.
meetanatheist - We are all seeking something...whether it is a religion free government, happiness, power, wealth, or (in my case)...a relationship with God. Also (btw)
I don't believe American slang to be, what my religion would call, a sin.
praying is an excuse for simple answers if you pray to god that something good is gonna happen when something does you say " god blessed me and answered my prayers" if something bad happens" it was gods will to not give me what i prayed for" i can do that with any god and say he either did or didn't answer my prayers
yeah, because a place with views that are rational and those that are not, that cause people to hate one another makes everything exciting...well worth keeping the bronze age myths and lack of critical thinking or intellectual responsibility....gotta have those 'thrills' of the religious misbehavers!
Let me ask you this. Could atheism itself not be defined as a religion? Religion - (n.) A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion. From what I can see, atheists seem quite devoted. Is it not just as "harmful" forcing your beliefs on America as it were Christians trying to force there beliefs? Perhaps this whole time you have been supporting what you have been trying to eliminate.
jjustinsc--No, your definition of "religion" is obviously too broad. That would apply to any human being who does what they love to do. No, religion involves supernatural god-belief, so Atheism is not a religion. The "A" means without, and "theism" is god-belief or religion. Atheists are without religion. Atheism is a lifestyle or attitude, but not a religion.
oh right give it up? why should they? you christians gave up our minds to your religion so why should athiests have to submit to you. im sure atheists have something strong its called pride.
what you say is like if i said christianity is dead why dont you give up?
I have been doing this now for about a year, I just never realized anyone else did it too, I am still looking for a bill with it marked out to come to me. Hopefully with your video, it will be sooner not later that I get one.
crash7997---Excellent! I've been doing it for around 10 years now, and I've gotten back a half dozen or so, outside of Atheist conventions...lol We go nuts with IGWT then! :o)
I do this to my money. for those who don't know... In god we trust was not always on our money. It was put on in the 50's. I have a bill from 1935 that dose not have "in god we trust" on it.
Hey Joe, sorry CNY; is the international name for Chinese money. I think the America $ will be overtaken by these Asian giants very soon. Maybe a one world monies system would be good for the world but not so much for America. I think as America loses control of the world's monies supply it will recede in power & influence in world affairs. I think the loss of super power title and influence will do America good.
Hey Joe it doesn't really matter if you scribble on your Yankee money because the world disrespects and is tired of your green backs. The America dream has turned into a nightmare of funding losing wars and importing goods from China & India and oil from the Middle East. I think the future is dim for the America dollar. So Just wait a few years and America will be using Euros or CNY; those you better not deface.
steveascension---I understand that there isn't any religion on Euros, and on most of the currency around the world as well. What's CNY? Like the Metric System, I believe America will fare just fine avoiding certain foreign ideas we don't like. The dollar is losing value here too, and that's seems to be ok.
steveascension---I wouldn't cleanse a secular form of money, but all my life, money has been religious. A billboard for ignorance. So I welcome a secular influence like that. I challenge rational Europeans to push more secularism on American Christians! :o)
bgjohnla--Thanks! Oh you know I don't spend money that's godded. I've cleansed thousands, tens of thousands of bills in my life, and there are so many more to go! Uppity Atheists Unite! :o)
...dang, used to work at a job where I had a lot of money going thru my hands. Wish I would have thought of this when I was doing that as there would have been alot of money with black sharpie on it...
Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill... with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued
I was told that it was illegal to mark up any of the bills or to write on it. I have crossed out the "In God We Trust" and have written "In Secularism We Trust" etc on it. Is this illegal at all?
WeatherMondacicci---To mark out IGWT is legal, but to put your own wording is not. Now it's rarely enforced as far as I know, but I've never heard of any Atheist getting into trouble for putting their own words there. Still, there's the high road, I say let's take it, in a big, proud way.
evilmonkey8206---Lots of things. REAL things. I believe in keeping religion and government separate, I believe in freedom of conscience for everyone, I believe I'll have another beer. See? Atheists have lots of beliefs. :o) [_]o
I use a felt marker to cross off the occult blather when I think about it and when I have a marker. I don't go out of my way to mark out the occultism from EVERY bill that passes through my hands.
I used to write XENU . NET on my bills also. }:-}
NotSoOldHippy---I have a zero tolerance policy on religion on my person, in my home, or in the air around me at all times. How dare they murder millions of innocent people for God and then print his name on every single dollar! I zap that thing on sight. It's like an organized cockroach attack. Don't just stand there! Start stomping! lol
I don't believe you Joe... Religion is belief without proof. I would fall over dead if you told me you weren't an Al Gore-koolaid-swilling-lemming when it came to global warming. If by chance you aren't then you have broken with the bulk of your brethren.
bowlingballout----That's a different issue. I'm a landscaper, so I think about the environment. I also do a lot of volunteer work picking up trash, so I'm not happy with the way some humans have treated Earth. But I don't like Al Gore...He's spent. Atheism is a different topic.
austincovello----I hear that, that the IGWT on money is low priority compared to the pledge and other violations. Here's why it's a priority to me: Few other state/church violations make it into your life on a daily basis like godded cash. It's one of the few that we can't reasonably walk away from totally. It's also one of the only ones we can actually correct.
n0ble8foldpath---I don't think I've ever heard of someone being prosecuted for writing their own words on a bill. So if they want to enforce that, I can't tell...
in the UK they have charles darwin on one of their bills ^^
i think all the american atheists really should do it, such a bill gets circulated a lot, lots of people will see it. and its legal. i would do it if i would live in america, i used to scratch little messages in coins when i was bored at school. you can actually get a full sentence on a normal coin when you have enough time ^^
kurtilein3---I want a Darwin bill! Tell me more! Gimmie gimmie gimmie! Plus if anyone has one of the new godless dollar coins that the US Mint put out accidentally, this Atheist activist needs one! I want to show it to evangelists and zealous Christian politicians.
unfortunately i dont live in the UK, i live in germany, so... it would be difficult to get one for me. one of our fellow youtube atheists showed one of these bills in a video, i looked it up on wikipedia, its the 10 pound bill you are looking for.
the money is currently in use in the UK, and i bet you can get foreign money at an international bank.
jwoodswce--I think an Atheist re-wrote it like that, and possibly recorded it. I don't know for sure. But I just like to sing it out loud all the time. That's so cool that you pointed out the exact thing I was thinking! Spooky! lol
Grimli--That doesn't make sense. It's not there for the benefit of Christians, it's there to rope all Americans in with their delusion. It should be a serious issue to everyone who is NOT a Christian. That's if you care about what your government does, which many people don't, so ok, there's that. lol
to me it's just a placebo for the christians, it does me no harm, now laws against an atheist running for public office is offensive and I feel does do me harm.
Grimli---Well since most Atheists will never run for a public office, and most of the Atheists in America have to handle cash...I work on both. :o)Both of those violations are specifically prohibited by the Constitution, word for word.
Maxicolly---Yeah I've never really believed that. Religion has been like an unstoppable virus infiltrating our government. It behooves us Atheists to utilize our freedom of speech, and blow the whistle at that nonsense.
Paine was the only one of those three who specifically fought and suffered to challenge religion. Jefferson seems to have been mighty conciliatory. The only one who of them who has been called "that dirty little Atheist" was Paine. He sat in prison to help the common citizenry in France. Meanwhile the US government was including chaplains and prayers in the new Congress.
NotSoOldHippy--I'm going to disagree on that right off. I'm proud to be an Atheist, and I realize that millions of other people are too, and we've been held down a long time. We deserve the dignity of recognition for our Atheism as a mark of pride and establishment. Atheism should be capitalized if Christianity EVER gets that much respect.
Mistakenly capitalizing the word is an attempt to religate the lack of gods and goddesses into the realm of a religion or a political party -- or some other personal pronoun. Cultists point at people who mistakenly capitalize the word and say, "Ah ha! See? SEE!?" Capitalizing the word gives fundies ammunition -- which doesn't help much.
NotSoOldHippy--It's no mistake that our people have been systematically silenced and punished for criticizing and organizing against religion. We've earned dignity, and it's up to us to make this improvement. No one else will afford us that much dignity. You're welcome to do it how you like, but I'm proud to be an Atheist.
I love ya Joe, that wall sure ain't dentin' yet, how about your noggin, holdin' up well?
Calling yourself an Atheist -capital- "A" is like me calling my self an A-ghost-ist since I do not believe in ghosts. I am also an A-lochnessmonster-ist and an A-bigfoot-ist. At some point I think it is senseless to dance to their drum...
I know you will tell me where I am wrong... can't wait to hear/read it.
bowlingballout--It's a matter of taste I guess. For me, it's about pride in accomplishing a form of liberty I didn't have before. It was a major struggle getting free from religion, and I'm proud I did it. Our movement deserves recognition and respect.
If the belief in ghosts affected your personal freedoms, caused its believers to damn you to hell, cause crusades, genocide, lunacy and the Spanish inquisition, then A-ghost-ism would be properly capitalised in protest.
I dare say that you are off the mark, perhaps WAY of the mark... though I leave room for my being in error ((like that wiggle room or what?))
The things you mention are in the past and fading quickly. If anything the tables are turning. Theists are coming under attack more and more for the very fact that they choose to believe something that seems illogical to the rest of us.
I can only imagine what it will look like in 100-200 years when they comprise only small pockets of our society. Will we brutalize them for their beliefs... I proffer, "Yes we will".
But I'm sure you'll be ready to avoid what I've written and skip to a specious retort, I'm waiting....
I can only imagine what it will look like in 100-200 years when they comprise only small pockets of our society. Will we brutalize them for their beliefs... I proffer, "Yes we will".
P= Once religiosity becomes uncommon, atheists will persecute Christians. It is unfortunate, something must be done to combat a potential road to irrational persecution; I don't disagree with you. Do I endorse such a thing? No.
Despite this, there is no link between criticism and persecution.
A) Missing point entirely (point= Term Atheism was direct result of such actions, still partially relevant due to minority status ...). Use of term 'protest' implied that theocratic paradigms have infiltrated the US government.
P2. Response. Mainly fear of potential, LRA, Islamist organisations etc. justify such an assertion.
yedrellow---I criticize religions, but I don't attack theists. This is a common misconception that a lot of Christians have about us Atheists. It's the belief, the system, and the tax-free multi-billion dollar scam of the industry of religion that I want to point out. The Crusades, Inquisitions are not irrelevant, unless you don't mind genocide.
I have started doing this on every bill I receive. By the way, did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic insomniac? He lays awake at night wondering if there really IS a Dog.

First off, a real comment. HAHAHA what an idiot.
Logical fallacies: 3
Grammatical errors: 4
"Hey fucker to the person" should be "Hello/Hey fucker."
The first sentence contains no verbs, and is not a short greeting.
-ing adjectives, such as fucking do not exist. There are only present tense verbs.
There is excessive punctuation on bitch.

Logical fallacy 1 and 2: atheists, with no belief whatsoever, believe in the christian god necessarily to believe in his adversary satan.
Logical fallacy 3:Satan is physical enough to be inserted. The bible teaches he is an immaterial being.

i work for money... dollar bills have in god we trust, and i'm happy it says so.
SoupyLibertarian 3 years ago
Soupy Okay now why? What's good about that phrase on government property? What's good about the government propping up religion like that? What's good about having an all-powerful god's name on that currency when the value of that the dollar is steadily declining?
aajoeyjo 3 years ago
please understand it has much to do with tradition, when the government mentions god but they don't force it upon you do they, has a government official told you while working that you should be christian. seriously have you? sure you entertain the idea for a thrill be; you're a non-comformist, i ask you what do you think you are accomplishing, nothing.

SkinnerRichard 3 years ago
SkinnerRichard Well I've made a lot of other videos about other issues we Atheist activists talk about. One long term goal is to sustain the effort. All efforts toward Atheist civil rights and state/church separation. Across the board opposition to all govt. religion, and lawful ways to address the problem. That's for now, and there are other goals for later.
aajoeyjo 3 years ago
its sad to say but radicals/extremists hurt all people, not saying there are more athiest extremist but americans see what the media portrays. please understand, i disagree with you on religion yet i respect that you have a stance
SoupyLibertarian 3 years ago
Nope I didn't say that, and you seem to want Atheist activism to be a crime. That makes you a traitor to the cause, or just another wacko Christian. So zap!
aajoeyjo 3 years ago
voice your opinion all you want, after all this is america, but know i disagree. I at least respect that you have a stance and aren't closed to the world like many of an group
SoupyLibertarian 3 years ago
Yes, you're wanting Atheists to keep quiet while religious groups run all over our rights and ignore state/church separation. That's what the Nazis did, with terrible results. Resistance is the key to keeping freedoms alive. Why don't you go back to church?
aajoeyjo 3 years ago
phlegmuffin - Exactly. You're just like those good Germans who said "Just go along. Fit in with society. Your concerns about Hitler are insignificant. People shouldn't complain about silly little things like that. You're efforts are a joke..."
aajoeyjo 3 years ago
phlegmuffin - Some of us Atheists have had religion forced on us quite a bit. I'm glad that didn't happen to you. Otherwise you'd reject religion from our goverment. This phrase was enabled by a "law respecting an establishment of religion." No self respecting Atheist would lie down and accept that from any government.

God bless!
UnclePhungus 4 years ago
UnclePhungus--LOL! Good question. Actually I collect t-shirts, especially the Atheist activist type, so I have several older t-shirts that are kind of rare. American Atheists has newer ones on sale, and in some of my other videos you can see 'em. Regarding hair, didn't Jesus have long hair? Hmmm? And George Washington, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain...and hey! Penn Gillette. Okay.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
hey dude just watched u'r video and have 2 say do u not think is weird that athists (like u'r self)
would go out of their way 2 disprove God or sctrach the name out on your money. see what worries me as a free thinker is athism is nearly turning in2 a relgion. all my atheists freinds go metal at me trying 2 prove God that it make me think "if u'r so sure why do u care so much?" remember as Socrates said "one thing i know is that i know nothing"
Jack63815 4 years ago
Jack63815---Well we're not trying to disprove God, first of all. Sure, it may seem like that, but we discuss a lot of things. We don't have any burden of disproving anything. So that's not our bag. The In God We Trust on our money is illegal, so we're fixing that, slowly. Observing and combating religion does not make us religious.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
no don't get more me wrong i'm not being critical i'm just pointing out that it seem u'r going out of u'r way 2 be anti-relgion. u'r not one of these atheists that are extreme in fairness but many atheists i know are terrified when u changelle their views. i guess so are alot of relgious people as well and its knida weird how similiar they are if they don't like 2 admit it.

TheGeckoNinja 4 years ago
Atheism is not a religion or even a belief system, it is a disbelief system. The literal translation of the root term "atheist" means without belief in God(s). What you are is an Anti-theist, someone who is against a belief in God and, by association, against all those who believe in God. So was Hitler. So was Stalin. So was Mao...... Good company.
UnclePhungus 4 years ago
UnclePhungus--Do your research. See the pro-godism of Hitler and the Nazis, and learn about how Stalin made himself into a man-god on Earth. Same with Mao, plus Communism is not the same as Atheism. Go complain about Communism and fascism to Communists and fascists please. Atheism is rationalism plus reality.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
Joe - learn how to read. I said Hitler, Stalin and Mao were anti-theists, not atheists.
UnclePhungus 4 years ago
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH HAHAHAHA!!!!!! You're a moron. Hitler was in bed with the Catholic church the entire time. Stalin and Mao simply used atheism as a form of government control. Not something I agree with whatsoever. I would never want government to force people from not worshipping. My feelings of worship that it's ridiculous has nothing to do with how Stalin and Mao forced it on the people. Hitler is inapplicable because he was very much pro theist.

jjustinsc 4 years ago
Yeah...I don't...what's your point?
Thrashaero 4 years ago
why the fuk do you people care so much?? give it up already
jjustinsc 4 years ago
jjustinsc---Because we care. Ourselves? America? Please.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
"In God We Trust" is hardly causing "harm" to you or anyone. You say that religion causes so many problems, but every organization, club, religion, etc. has it's extremists. I'm sure there is even an atheist organization out there that has burned down a church or two. Religion is not the problem my friend. It is the fact that we as human beings find it so hard to agree with each other, and that's good because without different views the world would be a very boring place.
jjustinsc 4 years ago
jjustinsc---Ok, what if it were changed to read "In Satan We Trust."? It would be just as inaccurate, but wouldn't it bother you? The harm is when government and religion become one. History shows clearly that melding government and religion is a deadly mistake. We all get along better when the are limitations on each. Rational limitations.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
You're right, I would be offended by "In Satan We Trust" but I would be just as offended to see "In God We Trust" marked out with a sharpie. It's degrading my beliefs just the same as it degrades yours. So even though you think you're helping by doing this, you're imposing your atheistic beliefs on everyone who gets your marked up money. Let the courts decide friend.
jjustinsc 4 years ago
justinsc---The Constitution already prohibits Congress from doing what it did to put that religious phrase on our money. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." Well they did just that, several times. Christianity relies on law-breaking.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
it's not imposing atheistic beliefs. it's removing the sanctioning of religion by government. of course, it is not a sanction of a specific theistic religion. but it is theistic. which is a brand of religion itself. it shouldn't offend your feelings to not have government endorse religion. government (federal reserve actually) made the money, you didn't.
Thrashaero 4 years ago
Thrashaero-Do you honestly think removing "In God We Trust" from our money is gonna solve anything other than atheists bitchin' on youtube?...NO. There are a lot more problems to be dealt with other than a group of people *cough atheists cough* who blame God for all their problems and feel they complain about it to the whole world.
jjustinsc 4 years ago
No but it's perfectly legal, shouldn't be there, and if you don't like it...get out of America and move to somewhere else that the government is legally allowed to sanction religion. Yeah...there are a lot bigger problems than we atheists....like you theists who like to start wars and be condescending to everyone who questions your precious, unfounded beliefs.
Thrashaero 4 years ago
Yeah you're right. there are major problems bigger than we pesky atheists....like the problems we bitch about. being religion. which happens to be a source of division and conflict. solves zero problems and creates very huge ones. Marking it off the money is perfectly legal. IF you want your government to legally sanction religion...get out of America.
Thrashaero 4 years ago
Thrashaero-It's only a problem because atheists make it a problem by BITCHING to our government about it. How is religion (Christianity to be specific) not solving problems. If you consider feeding starving children or sheltering the homeless a problem then why don't YOU get out of America and move to Niger where you can be with the non-existent problem.
jjustinsc 4 years ago
feeding starving children, sheltering the homeless, at the same time selling them a religion is a problem. secular groups do the same in bigger quantities without a religion attached. any amount of prayer to god doesn't fix shit beyond prayer to a garbage can. they should be doing good regardless, not because a holy book said so.
Thrashaero 4 years ago
speak for yourself
jjustinsc 4 years ago
Thrashaero-Are you speaking from personal experience when you say prayer doesn't fix anything?
jjustinsc 4 years ago
absolutely.
and from scientific studies done.

Thrashaero 4 years ago
jjustinsc---It's reality, not just a personal experience. It's the results of scientific studies done on the efficacy of prayer. There simply is none. What fixes things is action.

Thrashaero 4 years ago
Let me ask you this. Could atheism itself not be defined as a religion? Religion - (n.) A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion. From what I can see, atheists seem quite devoted. Is it not just as "harmful" forcing your beliefs on America as it were Christians trying to force there beliefs? Perhaps this whole time you have been supporting what you have been trying to eliminate.
jjustinsc 4 years ago
jjustinsc--No, your definition of "religion" is obviously too broad. That would apply to any human being who does what they love to do. No, religion involves supernatural god-belief, so Atheism is not a religion. The "A" means without, and "theism" is god-belief or religion. Atheists are without religion. Atheism is a lifestyle or attitude, but not a religion.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
oh right give it up? why should they? you christians gave up our minds to your religion so why should athiests have to submit to you. im sure atheists have something strong its called pride.

Maxicolly 4 years ago
Paine was the only one of those three who specifically fought and suffered to challenge religion. Jefferson seems to have been mighty conciliatory. The only one who of them who has been called "that dirty little Atheist" was Paine. He sat in prison to help the common citizenry in France. Meanwhile the US government was including chaplains and prayers in the new Congress.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
Not topical but I don't agree with this:
"... It behooves us Atheists to utilize..."
The word "atheists" isn't something that should be capitalized.
NotSoOldHippy 4 years ago
NotSoOldHippy--I'm going to disagree on that right off. I'm proud to be an Atheist, and I realize that millions of other people are too, and we've been held down a long time. We deserve the dignity of recognition for our Atheism as a mark of pride and establishment. Atheism should be capitalized if Christianity EVER gets that much respect.
aajoeyjo 4 years ago
Mistakenly capitalizing the word is an attempt to religate the lack of gods and goddesses into the realm of a religion or a political party -- or some other personal pronoun. Cultists point at people who mistakenly capitalize the word and say, "Ah ha! See? SEE!?" Capitalizing the word gives fundies ammunition -- which doesn't help much.
NotSoOldHippy 4 years ago
NotSoOldHippy--It's no mistake that our people have been systematically silenced and punished for criticizing and organizing against religion. We've earned dignity, and it's up to us to make this improvement. No one else will afford us that much dignity. You're welcome to do it how you like, but I'm proud to be an Atheist.

I love ya Joe, that wall sure ain't dentin' yet, how about your noggin, holdin' up well?

If the belief in ghosts affected your personal freedoms, caused its believers to damn you to hell, cause crusades, genocide, lunacy and the Spanish inquisition, then A-ghost-ism would be properly capitalised in protest.

I dare say that you are off the mark, perhaps WAY of the mark... though I leave room for my being in error ((like that wiggle room or what?))
The things you mention are in the past and fading quickly. If anything the tables are turning. Theists are coming under attack more and more for the very fact that they choose to believe something that seems illogical to the rest of us.

(conclusion)
I can only imagine what it will look like in 100-200 years when they comprise only small pockets of our society. Will we brutalize them for their beliefs... I proffer, "Yes we will".
But I'm sure you'll be ready to avoid what I've written and skip to a specious retort, I'm waiting....

P= Once religiosity becomes uncommon, atheists will persecute Christians. It is unfortunate, something must be done to combat a potential road to irrational persecution; I don't disagree with you. Do I endorse such a thing? No.
Despite this, there is no link between criticism and persecution.

Such a thing is not limited to Christianity, Islam seems to be going through a similar phase that Christianity went through 200 years ago.

P1. Atheists are starting to attack theists for their beliefs and this trend seems like it is progressing ...
P2. Crusades, Spanish Inquisition etc. are now irrelevent
P1 Response
