of course the spacers make it easier to break! but, that doesn't mean they all of a sudden shatter upon impact. Attempt to break even 1 brick with a knife hand and you'll see this wasn't a simple task.
yeah with the bridge and spacers i mean , how many pounds of pressure are needed to do that? the bridge makes all the impact go to the edges of the brick while the spacers create a domino affect. people do that all the time i don't know why i guess because it looks cool . yeah that strike could possibly even knock someone out if it hit the right spot . but you're talking about breaking 8 bricks . there's hardly any point to fool someone unless you're trying to make money with a scam.
@MusicUniverse561 the Fist is generally the best for breaking bricks, when breaking with the hand. It's also one of the most painful to condition. I recommend conditioning the whole fist and not just the 2 knuckles, but rather all the knuckles and even the back of the fingers. Harden it all! Just hit something hard(solid steel)1000 a day, every day. Take maybe 15 minutes. And you hit it light. Of course not too light. Definitely not Hard. Light works fine. 3 months later you'll be amazed.
@ervin920 You need to shut up, and learn a thing or two about breaking bricks, because you clearly knotw nothing. I wanna see you break just half of what Shaun just broke, without any spacers. Then we'll see how dumb those spacers are, with your shattered hand.
it takes no training or skill whatsoever to do this, anyone can accomplish this if you understand physics, he really is only breaking the top brick, excerting about 90 pounds of force with his punch, the top brick breaks the rest, i have never had training or martial arts experience before and i just tested it with a few friends with 10 bricks and they easily broke.
i am 15 years old i have just recently broken 3 bricks, i hope to try 4 next year and so on so forth, i am also a black belt in taekwondo, i am just wondering that hand technique i use a hammer fist whats the best one that you find?
i was wondering about the hand position, i have always thought that to protect the finger you squeeze them tight, I 'm not trying to be that guy just curious, i want to start trying tameshiwari and just want to know.
@RiptN3rd Gimme a break. 14, and he thinks he can break through 13 blocks with just a palm. Goddamn boastful kids with nothing to back it up. When you do it, send me the video link. Until then, I'm done reading your lying comments. Liar.
@observerreacts I'd settle for him breaking just 2 bricks without spacers and moving the pillars closer together.. he uses physics to his advantage in this sham of a break...
To educate YOU, my friend: The American patch is on the left sleeve; the SOUTH KOREAN patch is on the right sleeve; and my school's patch is on the chest. There is no Chinese patch, since Tang Soo Do is not a Chinese style, but a Korean one. I am also active duty Navy for 13 years now, and love my country more than you ever will. Consider yourself educated. (And it's "He needs" not "He need".)
I sometimes wonder why some people desire to use all those patches. Where I have trained, we generally only wear the symbol of the system on the chest, and truth to be told, whenever I have been able to get away with it, I wear the white gi with no symbols what so ever and the black belt with no symbols what so ever, except the dan bars. @realityme See, most people would look at "Poker" and think of the game poker... But not you, no... You are thinking of someone getting "poked" (again referring to something gay I presume)... well, whatever floats your boat man...
In class when the teacher asked everyone to draw their family tree, you just drew a straight line didn't you? lol
I just wanted to understand how the training works... like for example.. if you have seen Kill Bill 2 there's that scene where she learns to punch a hole through a thick wooden board.... what happens after a while that your hand doesnt get injured?...i cant wrap my head around that... anybody know?
I like this breaking technique. It shows the true essence of the martial arts. I can tell that is person was well trained and using a small protective device, like a pot holder, is wise when attemping breaks similiar to this one. I'm old school and cut myself very badly knife handing several bricks once. I still don't use protection during breaking unless I have several to do in one week. Good Job!!!
Nice job! Is that a pot-holder to serve as a damper to prevent cuts, etc.? It looked like you kept your fingers spread a little, or is that just where you're sizing it up? Do you build up the strength of your bones by hitting a hard surface on a regular basis?
Pot holder does minimize the cuts to the hand. This was just one of many breaks that day and I had another demo a week later. Just being smarter at my old age! The fingers were spread to harden the muscle on the side of the hand for impact. Just as you would make a tight fist for a punch. Everyone has their own technique on this. As for the strength of the bones, yes, I 've done body-hardening over the years which involves hitting hard surfaces repeatedly. Thanks for the comment!
why do u have to use the bridge to break it and every vid i see they use very long brick and a bridge. how bout do less brick and no spacing and no bridge
The simple answer is tradition. There are many ways to setup different breaks and different materials to use. I try to stick with very standardized breaks so that most martial artists appreciate the break while the audience at the demo is still impressed. My audience was elementary school kids. Hard to impress! :) You could do less spacing and fewer bricks. That would certainly be harder. No bridge would be a little ridiculous. No way to know how close you were to breaking it. Thx for the post!
@iluvbigbootie the spacer allows for the bricks to fall out of th way of the hand. making it a cleaner break. and some say it is easier but i find there to be little noticable change in the difficulty.
@MrSaber152 I've found just the opposite, Spacers make breaks much easier, What techniques are you using to do your breaks that your not noticing a big difference?
@shadowman45810 i do notice it is easier but not to much. i punch mostly and dont see a big differance till i break 3 bricks after that its much harder. so i guess my previous statment was a little misleading sorry about that.
Thanks! I think is amazing how the bones in the body can become harder than concrete. I've never broken a single bone in my body. Must be the milk! :) Thanks for the post!
Repetition. Just start small and keep adding a little more at a time. 1 board, 2 boards, 3 boards, 1 brick, etc. You can also alter the spacing. More spacing = easier. Less spacing = harder. Thanks for the post!
To everyone: Thank you all for the comments and e-mails! Champion Sportswear has recently taken note of this video and used it in a recent montage of other impressive karate videos. I really appreciate your supportive comments and e-mails!
That's correct. There would be a HUGE difference between each brick added. 1 brick-easy; 2 bricks-harder; 3 bricks-much harder; and 4 or 5 bricks become nearly impossible for most people. Spacers allow degrees of difficulty to be added per brick at a reasonable rate. Something else done is to decrease the amount of spacing b/t each brick (1/2" here), which increases the difficulty w/o making it impossible. I'm working on breaking 8 bricks spaced by the thickness of quarters. Thx for the post!
wow. Thanks! I always wondered but never new. I'd also imagine that the length to thickness ratio plays into it also. The shorter the brick with a particular thickness would be harder to break than a longer brick with that same thickness. Keep it up!
i have to commend you sir for being honest about spacing the blocks. you are one of the first people i have ever sen to do this. even though your blocks were spaced,it is still impressive. are you considering removing a spacer from each level and trying for unspaced??
Unspaced, I could probably do 3-4 at the most (2" thick each would be 6-8" thick total). So instead, I'm simply working on reducing the spacing gradually. Realistically, some spacing is needed to be effective training. Otherwise, you're just trying to break a single slab of really thick cement, which becomes impossible very quickly as the thickness increases. Also, for competition purposes, spacing allows more degrees of difficulty between competitors. Thx for the post!
Dude I have to complement you. I am up to 8 as my personal best but I am used to using 6 column gardening scallops with bigger spacers and a palm heel instead of a knife hand so great job.
Thanks for the complement. I've seen many of the column gardening scallops, too. Some karate schools have different reaaons why they choose to use different materials, but as long as you're progressing in difficulty, who cares, right? Keep it up and good luck. Thanks again for the post.
Impressive...I agree with Hodatdownman....thanks for using regular cinder blocks instead of the longer ones. These blocks significantly increase the level of difficulty. Do you think wood spacers work better than lock nuts?
Thanks. I really appreciate the fact that there are others out there that understand the difference in difficulty. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "lock nuts", but it seems that material of the spacers matters little when compared to the actual width (height) of the spacers. In other words, less space between the bricks increases the difficulty. I attempted 8 bricks with carpenter's pencils and only made it through 6. I'll try again soon, though. Thanks again for the comment!
Thx. I'm glad someone appreciates the difficulty. I really strive to give "true" demonstrations. I've had some failed breaks in public. It took those failed breaks to make me work harder to get better.
Let me paraphrase a quote from the movie The Karate Kid 2. "Hey Mr. Miyagi, can you break eight bricks? Don't know, never been attacked by eight bricks".
Actually not. Because I've read about Oyama breaking a bull's horn with a knife strike, so I just wonder is breaking eight brick at once equivalent to that?
Thx! If you're breaking your hand, start with less bricks! I didn't just wake up one day and hit 8 bricks with my hand. It's a body-hardening process that takes years to develop.
To comment on what I'm seeing on some other breaking videos: While breaking doesn't directly translate into how you fight, it is NOT "useless" & can achieve its designed purposes when done correctly: 1) Build self-confidence, 2) Condition the body to deliver a strike, & 3) To deliver a strike on target.
Dude, I need you help with my patio.

Thanks again for the comment!

many other breaks use longer and thinner bricks bu u didnt. nice job

Thx. I'm glad someone appreciates the difficulty. I really strive to give "true" demonstrations. I've had some failed breaks in public. It took those failed breaks to make me work harder to get better.

It's tryly amazing how science has known about this for the past 100 years or so while chinese have known for over 5000

Very impressive! So how many years it takes you to reach this level Shaun? On the 1st day, did you train with brick already?
With your current ability, is it possible to break a buffalo's horn?
asianbuffalo 4 years ago
does the fact thas your nickname is asianbuffalo has anything to do with u asking about breaking buffalo's horn?

I like how you explain the purpose of breaking in your comment... Well said. Thanks for the vid!

that deserves my respect.
My personal best was 6 blocks with a chop but i broke my hand.
My dad did seven and broke his hand too.
Great job.

Thx! If you're breaking your hand, start with less bricks! I didn't just wake up one day and hit 8 bricks with my hand. It's a body-hardening process that takes years to develop.
To comment on what I'm seeing on some other breaking videos: While breaking doesn't directly translate into how you fight, it is NOT "useless" & can achieve its designed purposes when done correctly: 1) Build self-confidence, 2) Condition the body to deliver a strike, & 3) To deliver a strike on target.

funny story.
we were both doing breaks for the local paper.
We did are breaks but to start with i did five.
Grandmaster thought it was to easy and said "no" and said "one more". (HE always does that to me).
Just curious what state do you preside.
