I believe that Royce is the greatest ambassador for Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. The Gracies are Legendary and yet Royce is humble. This family single handedly made MMA what it has become today. Yeah, MMA has grown alot since then, but the Gracies will always remain a cornerstone of this sport. I became interested in this sport because of Royce Gracie. It is, by far, the most exciting sport in the world and the Gracies are probably to thank for that.

Look man, I know full well that a 22 or 26 year old Royce Gracie still lacked effective stand-up, but regardless, like someone posted earlier, if you know how Royce fights and you've seen his "In Action" segments, in addition to the first UFC's, regardless of the competition, Royce wasn't the same since his first fight with Sakuraba. He has trouble pulling the trigger and more than anything else, his sense of movement and SHARPNESS was way down.
Clearly Royce isn't as good as he use to be. Pre-fight exercises involved him punching and what not, that's bull crap. He simi-effectively used kicks against Keith Hackney but got him in an arm bar eventualy. His skills were lacking in that fight and it shows. When he gave Matt his back, that's when I knew that wasn't old Royce.
Anyone that knows anything about UFC and is not part of this crappier generation of UFC fighters knows that Royce isn't the same.

Just a comment. You know what is so funny to me is how Rorion says that UFC has taken away much of the "reality fighting" with the rules and thus no Gracies in the UFC...BUT they have fighters like Gregor Gracie fighting in other outfits with the same rules.
IMHO the Gracie's refused to up their game (they lack striking and takedown skills in comparison to the other upper-level fighters). Royce was amazing at the time but in the mma world (even in his prime) he wouldn't be ready.
But what needs to be taken in to consideration is that it was a ground game. Royce is NOT as good as he use to be. All you have to notice is when he gave him his back. I can't stress enough, he is not the same fighter way back when.

It was kinda sad. i had a hard time watchin. if he was 27 still, he would submitted matt with no problem, hes taken on guys almost 3 times his size. plus, ( im not sure when he retired or took his break) but the fighting styles have changed alot from when he was in his prime

The gracie jiu jitsu established the foundation for what we enjoy in the UFC today. Royce tapped out several fighters in the early UFC tournaments. Royce released the hold when his opponents tapped out. The ref did not see the tap out and at least 2 of Royce's opponents then continued fighting acting as if they hadn't tapped out. Now Royce holds the submission until it is certain the opponent has clearly tapped. I don't blame him for holding the submission.
this is true in the case of some of his fights but he has that famous fight where he broke the guys elbow via armbar after the ref told him it was over this is the fight most people are reffering to, i believe it was vs keith hackney
Royce stopped in the Hackney fight as soon as the ref touched him.
You might be thinking of the Jason Delucia fight, but that was a belly down armbar (harder to hear instructions or see the ref) and NO ONE other than Jim Brown (on that night) has ever said that the arm was broken.
you could be right i just remember seeing one of his fights where he was still pulling through the armbar after the guy tapped and still after the ref told him it was over, but to be fair i have also seen a fight where he got a submission and the fighter tapped and he let go then he continued fighting like he didn't tap gracie got real mad and submitted him a 2nd time

Matt Hughes was younger and a more evolved fighter. Now Sakuraba is a great MMA legend. who like royce never forgot his fighting roots.

I believe that Royce is the greatest ambassador for Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. The Gracies are Legendary and yet Royce is humble. This family single handedly made MMA what it has become today. Yeah, MMA has grown alot since then, but the Gracies will always remain a cornerstone of this sport. I became interested in this sport because of Royce Gracie. It is, by far, the most exciting sport in the world and the Gracies are probably to thank for that.

Look man, I know full well that a 22 or 26 year old Royce Gracie still lacked effective stand-up, but regardless, like someone posted earlier, if you know how Royce fights and you've seen his "In Action" segments, in addition to the first UFC's, regardless of the competition, Royce wasn't the same since his first fight with Sakuraba. He has trouble pulling the trigger and more than anything else, his sense of movement and SHARPNESS was way down.

Clearly Royce isn't as good as he use to be. Pre-fight exercises involved him punching and what not, that's bull crap. He simi-effectively used kicks against Keith Hackney but got him in an arm bar eventualy. His skills were lacking in that fight and it shows. When he gave Matt his back, that's when I knew that wasn't old Royce.
Anyone that knows anything about UFC and is not part of this crappier generation of UFC fighters knows that Royce isn't the same.

You can't blame the Royce.
The Gracie Jiu Jitsu's reputation is on his shoulders at that time.
As the Gracie Family said, chose Royce to compete on UFC over Rickson (who they say say is 100% better than Royce) because they want to show the world how effective Gracie Jiu Jitsu is particularly against larger, more athletic opponents.
I don't feel bad when he lost to Matt Hughes because MMA competitions evolved to the extent that a fighter won't be successful without striking.

Just a comment. You know what is so funny to me is how Rorion says that UFC has taken away much of the "reality fighting" with the rules and thus no Gracies in the UFC...BUT they have fighters like Gregor Gracie fighting in other outfits with the same rules.
IMHO the Gracie's refused to up their game (they lack striking and takedown skills in comparison to the other upper-level fighters). Royce was amazing at the time but in the mma world (even in his prime) he wouldn't be ready.

Royce tapped out several fighters in the early UFC tournaments. Royce released the hold when his opponents tapped out. The ref did not see the tap out and at least 2 of Royce's opponents then continued fighting acting as if they hadn't tapped out. Now Royce holds the submission until it is certain the opponent has clearly tapped. I don't blame him for holding the submission.

You might be thinking of the Jason Delucia fight, but that was a belly down armbar (harder to hear instructions or see the ref) and NO ONE other than Jim Brown (on that night) has ever said that the arm was broken.

now days in MMA royce gracie's style is no longer the best way. Before there were very few guys who knew what to do against a skilled jujitsu practitioner or a wrestler. But now so many things have changed fighters are better aware. Royce Gracie is a legend and must respect to the fact he still continues his way of fighting truly believing his way is the best. I had the oportunity to met him and practice with him on a 3 day seminar. Like it or not he show the world what jiu jitsu was , just a few persons knew what it was. One of the firsts ufc champions, fighting guys stronger and hevyer than him. not the best but one of the legends. Why hate him?
