  • praaaaaaaaaachtiiiiiiiig!!!!!!!!!!!! gr from Genemuiden Holland

  • i commented on diane bish's rendition of this and noted her tempo is way too fast. and barfyspitz evidently confuses his/her self as a music critic. i directed them to this page and we will see. oliver latry is by far the modern master performer of this masterpiece. never have i heard such a flawless performance of this masterpiece in my life.

  • @locke11216 Eh. Latry's rendition is technically perfect, he makes no mistakes. Diane Bish is not NEARLY as good an organist. That said, Latry's rendition here also strikes me as a bit soulless, and the chamades are oppressive. For a 'definitive' recording, we actually happen to HAVE a recording by the composer, on Youtube (should be at the top of the recommended videos, if not search). It's quite a bit slower, and the registrations are less than you'd expect - very interesting for study.

  • @willowthebored yes i have listened to widor play this at saint sulpice and even at his age it was quite glorious to hear. latry is amazing playing this but i agree an occasional mistake would give it a bit more of a human touch.

  • @locke11216 A REALLY good recording by Latry is his Durufle recordings (I haven't uploaded any, but they're on iTunes and WELL worth the ten bucks). I think he has a much better feeling for Durufle than for Widor. The only thing negative I'll say about it is that he does the weird 'Choo Choo Train' effect in the Toccata at the cadenza into the return, which Durufle hated so much he had them reissue the Suite Op. 5 with a "Tempo non rubato" over that spot.

  • @locke11216 prachtig mannetje of vrouwtje?

  • @locke11216

Madame Bitch is no real Organist. She is an american showgirl.

And this statement is the answer to all further questions.

    Greetings from Hamburg/Germany.

  • hahahaaaaaaaaa immer wieder gut!!!

  • I have the cd of this performance, which is Widor's sixth, then fifth symphonies. Olivier Latry plays both with such passion! What a rousing performance!

  • This performance is the Shiznito of shiznitos, Batpaisano...

  • I could imagine hitting the peak of a massively intense orgasm right through the last chord.

It would probably kill me but what the hell. If you do it right, one life is enough.

  • This performance is legendary. It is fiery without being rushed (as Widor meant with his metronomic indication), and exploit the full power of Notre Dame majestic organ.

I was amazed by the acciaccatura of the final chord (5:24), usually performed "ritenuto": Latry plays it like lightning and thunder!

  • I'm drowning in a sea of Widor... This is FINGER OF GOD EPIC!!!

  • @ 3:28 WALL OF WIDOR!! THE TOCCATA TSUNAMI!! Damn, I wish I were there when this happened!!

  • @dieselheart001 I can only imagine the agony of the perma-grin I would've worn for the next week thereafter. :D

  • @Mirefrost00 Remember the first Batman movie and the news anchorwoman that busted out laughing in the middle of the newscast, then keeled over? My "perma-grin" would be exactly that- the facial expression equivalent of a throbbing erection lol. Along with the ringing in my ears and hearing loss!! It literally would be the aural equivalent of drowning, minus the trauma. If I had to pick how to die by execution, I'd opt for neural net interfacing, then overload with this performance!!

  • omg totes amazing i love wider, dis piece has opened up da world of classic music 2 mii tnx so much XxXxXxx

  • OK next time I'm in NJ and can get over to Boardwalk Hall and see the midmer losh with its 64' pipe I'll visit and hopefully can hear it played. I wonder who writes (wrote) music that includes a 64' pedal note(s)?

  • I had this played at my wedding!! But the organ was nowhere as majestic as the Grande Orgue du Notre Dame, Paris. Still it felt glorious to walk down the isle newly married to this music!

  • Thank you, locke11216, for telling me about the Midmer Losh in Boardwalk Hall, NJ. So my friend was speaking of this organ when he said there was one that had a 64' pedal stop.

  • I find it's played too nervously.

  • yes it is. they recently completed the restoration on the kimball in the ballroom and are currently doing a full restoration on the midmer losh in the grand hall

  • every time i hear widor toccata i wanna go to heaven

  • My God! I think the organ just had an orgasm!

  • I feel like waking up from a coffin and want to suck some people's blood. Epic song..

  • its very beautiful!!!

  • Can someone tell me if there is any organ in the world with a Pedal stop of 64'?

I have seen some at 32' but a friend who I know who has studied music told me of a pipe organ somewhere that had a 64' pipe. I can't imagine that low a sound, but perhaps...

  • @MrHobbes2001 there is one organ in existence that has a 64that i know of. it is in boardwalk hall

in atlantic city NJ. the midmer losh there also has the distinction of being the largest organ in the world.

  • @MrHobbes2001

the organ in in atlantic city christal cathedral

  • @nicktheharpblower if your going for an organ in atlantic city. why not shoot the wad and go for the biggest in the world. the midmer losh at boardwalk hall. and it is currently getting a full restoration. it was the organ that introduced me to this wonderful toccata.

  • @MrHobbes2001 also that low a frequency is felt rather than heard

  • Imagine this played at your wedding!! :D

  • @UndignifiedPose I did, and I had it played at my wedding !! :D

  • OH MY GOD!!! I JUST DIED AND WENT TO WIDOR HEAVEN!!!!!!

  • @SordidGuy If you like this go check out the Widor 10th playlist I posted a while back, it's much better afaic.

  • hello! i found this musical performance a few months ago and can't stop listening to it, it is magnicifent! bravo!

can you tell me if there is some place on the internet where I would be able to download this performance of Widor's Toccata?

  • LOVE IT <33

  • Superb! Thanks for sharing. I uploaded the same piece in the second half of a church music video on the SJAHersey church channel. The video contains two recessionals played at the conclusion of the Easter vigil mass at St. Joan of Arc Church in Hershey, PA. The first piece is "Jesus Christ is Risen Today!" with trumpet accompaniment. Beth Palmer is director of music & organist. Click on the four arrows beneath the screen for large screen viewing. Regards, Bill Parks, Stanwrite@aol.com

  • This is the best rendition I have ever heard, I will try to play it like this next time I'm playing in a Cathedral!!! :D

  • Peace is for the weak? The most stupid thing I ever heard. Peace is for the sensible and God fearing - peace is for those who don't want to hurt their neighbours and other fellow human beings.

  • I heard an arrangement of this music with brass and tympani! It was incredible, but the organist who arranged that piece died before he could publish it. Hopefully someone else had the same idea. This has to be one of the finest compositions I've ever heard.

  • 5:39 Hell yeah there *better* be some damn applause!

  • I assume these kinds of organs must be pretty expensive...

  • @Deimos589 This particular organ would be considered priceless; parts of it are classified as historical monuments, dating from the 1730s and possibly before (would take too long for me to go date all the extant components). That said, a brand new organ of this size and scale would be hugely expensive; the pipe organ itself would probably run up four to six million US dollars, and the organ case is so florid and detailed it might add another million to that figure.

  • Such a sharp, amazing bass sound! sounds almost like an electric guitar! :D

  • Wow, did he pull out all the stops?

  • 3:27 WTF :D this is amazing!!!

  • Oh how I do love this organ!!!!! And it was built in1867? Amazing! Simply Amazing! And Mr. Latry is the organist...one of three at Notre Dame Cathedral. Oh how I wish I could have heard it when I visited the Cathedral! What is it with we Americans regarding something old? We tear down buildings, my first school in which I taught, my first church is taking down the organ(digital) and placing it somewhere to make room for GEETARS and TRASH! Why can't we respect the old any more?

  • ooh la la Olivier Latry the great!

  • wonderful! :)

  • That blast at 3:29 is just stunning!

  • I like Ben van Oosten's recording in Rouen above this one, however this is not bad at all...

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • Here it comes.....YES. lol!

  • Oh my holy God

  • I can't stop listening to this! Praise God for the talent He bestows to those who can compose and correctly play works like this!!! I can visualize all kinds of things listening to this: Christ's victorious Second Coming, Him crushing all His enemies, Him throwing Satan into the bottomless Pit and then into the Lake of Fire. What victory and triumph are expressed in this composition! Latry and this instrument are made for this piece!

  • @ramjetrabbit Take it easy pal... a human being composed this, not the hand of God. Its not a very complicated idea which he repeats many many times... and pulling out all the stops especially on the pedals can create a very powerful sound. I'm irreligious and I see much when I hear this too... but what I see transcends your man-made, pityful belief.

  • @AltarOfTriumph I bid you peace.

  • @ramjetrabbit Thanks, but no thanks.... peace is for the weak.

  • @AltarOfTriumph war is for the senseless

  • @ramjetrabbit I have to reply again; people like you are dangerous and should be locked up... I really hope one day you can see past your vestigial belief system, and find true tranquility in the edge of forever, and grandeur of the infinite.

  • @AltarOfTriumph What'd he ever do to you? Just mind your own business. This is about music, not religion.

  • @AltarOfTriumph And I do hope someday you can get past that irrational hate that seems to embrace you when somebody gives his legitimate opinion, just by mentioning the word "Christ" or "God" Also, aren't those concepts you mentioned ("edge of forever" "grandeur of the infinite") more properly man-made, created to escape from the void of the atheist's meaningless life? Think it out, pal.

    Wonderful music, by the way

  • @alados360 In short - No and I'm not Atheist. The idea of God is absolutely 'man-made' and it belittles the mystery and wonder of the universe.... Those 'concepts' as you put it, help to elaborate the idea of the greater universe. Perhaps you lack an imagination, or a mind of your own.

  • @AltarOfTriumph It may be, maybe not, a typical Christian Argument, but I am sure your proposal for locking up somebody by his religious believes is your classic XX century masonic/comunist argument.

This isn't the place, anyway, for a debate of this kind. May I ask you, if you wish to continue, to do so via PMs? Out of courtesy for the other watchers.

  • @alados360 Masonic/Communist argument? I care not for such cult/political propaganda... quite simply, I think it is insulting to the composer, and to the infinite wisdom and mystery of nature to state that this is 'Music from God'. Not to mention ignorant and shallow.

  • @AltarOfTriumph A belief in God doesnt do that i think, If there is a truth to be known here, then it is simply a proposition.

  • @alados360 To add, I find it amazingly ignorant of you to suggest and assume I lead a meaningless life. That is the classic condescending modern Christian argument right there.

  • @AltarOfTriumph I didn't mean to offend with the meaning phrase, and I'm sorry if it sounded aggresive. But, let me insist. Isn't it more properly man-made this idea of the greater universe? What's so great about it so it can give the the "tranquility on the edge of forever"?

  • @alados360 It isn't my place to teach... especially about something truly unknown to ANY human being.

  • CLose your eyes when you listen to this, this is what heaven looks like!!

  • Oh...WOW!!! How I do absolutely LOVE this rendition of the Toccata! The organ itself is superb! I'd like to hear it in person. Mr. Widor is superb! The music is superb! Place all three together and what is produced is so overwhelmingly GREAT, I want to play it repeatedly until my ears go deaf! By far, this is really my very favorite for the marverous instrument called the PIPE ORGAN! Thank YOU!

  • Does anyone know the name of the CD which this EXACT performance is recorded on? I WANT this recording!!! If I can't find it, I may go insane!! Help! Call all cars!!! Attention all decks!! Thanks so much to anyone who responds.

  • This is an absolutely PHENOMINAL rendition of this extraordinary classic. Many cuddos to this master extraordinairre. This instrument is extremely well suited for this, as it has the scope, range and power to deliver an exceptional performance of such an uplifting and triumphant expression of faith. Thank you for posting!!!!!

  • Ow yes... Wat een fijne versie... Sorry, nice version, not suitable for low quality recordings, buy the CD!

  • This is haevenly beautifull. I cant stop listening to it.

  • Evidently four people have the musical tastes of a monkey.

  • Imagine being in Notre Dame while this is played - woah!

  • @no66y666

It would be like being on the deck of the USS Iowa when she fired her main guns -- awesome!

  • 3.28 <3

  • The Notre Dame organ was a Thierry, who was a generation before Clicquot. Given the history of most French organs, very little remains of Thierry's work. However, the Notre Dame organ has suffered far more than most, given that it is located right at the very center of France. It became a Cavaille-Coll in the mid 18 hundreds, and remained so until the late Pierre Cochereau became organist. Under him the Notre Dame organ has been enlarged to it's present form.

  • Holy crap. This is absolutely amazing. I used this piece as the recessional for my wedding - my organist was great, but THIS is drop-dead fabulous.

  • @runswithscissors86

153 ranks of organ does that (even if it is over the top XD).

  • @willowthebored acchos organ. nuff said ._.

  • @Denuhm i would love to hear this played on the midmer losh in atlantic city when the restoration is complete.

and to have barbara fesmire play it for the dedication. it was her early recording of a piece of this work that sparked my love for it.

  • @locke11216 Is that the organ in convention hall?

  • @willowthebored - What is meant by organ "ranks" ? I dont know much about pipe organs. All I know is that they truly are the instruments of God.

  • @AngryFlagman An organ "rank", in short, is a set of organ pipes of the same kind and tonal color. In classical and theatre organs (which was built to mimick an orchestra), there are different "voices", different "sounds". Some are made to sound like flutes, oboes, trumpets, etc. The organ is a mechanical, wind instrument. And they are CERTAINLY an instrument of God. (Not much room to explain). A classical and theatre organ are not sister instruments. They are more like cousins.

  • @AngryFlagman Basically, a 'rank' is a set of 61 pipes - one pipe for each key on an organ's keyboards, which usually have 61 keys nowadays - that roughly correspond to the organ's 'stops.' Normally most organs will have one 'rank' of pipes for every 'stop.' Most organs also have some stops called 'Mixtures' which are actually several ranks of pipes that all speak different pitches on the same note - those are the stops that make the organ loudest.

  • @AngryFlagman So, in essence, every time an organist turns on (pulls) a 'stop' it engages a different 'rank' or ranks of pipes. Ranks are also organized into 'divisions', which are groups of ranks placed on a single big box called a 'windchest'. Each windchest is assigned to one of the organ's keyboards, and the windchest is divided into 61 sections, one for each key on a keyboard. 61 pipes from a rank sit on 61 different channels on a windchest, all in a row.

  • Hihi, nice comment : waaaait for it.... YES! (Y)

    Thanks for uploading!

  • Master LaTray has used the greatest French Organ on earth to creat with it in sound the nuclear white hot heat of harmonic creation which fall upon our ears like shattering crystal from the heavens. In it I begin to hear what must surely be the Angelic voice of Michael the Archangel on the last day. Well done Master LaTray, well done.

  • Are the pipes in that facade real or are they for decoration?

  • @GoPatriots100

Yes, those montres speak. I believe they're from the original Clicquot organ, one of those rare 32' manual stops they had back in the day.

  • @willowthebored Yes they are the 18th Century montre pipes made of a quite high tin content and all of them speak.

  • @GrandeBombarde16 what are the chamades? are they the really bright sounds? when does he add them? oh and I like that he made 4:22 to the end loud instead of quiet like some.

  • Comment removed

  • @GrandeBombarde16 I don't know. I like how the ending part is triumphant. (unlike most recordings) I realize this probably isn't the musically "correct" way, but it still seems more fitting to be loud for the whole song after 3:28. Did widor give any registration regarding that?

  • One of my two favourite organ pieces of all time this and bach toccata and fugue in d minor. these pieces have stood the test of time because they stir the human spirit with their majesty. i like the piano always have. but there is something so magesterial about an organ at full capacity. magnificent!!.

  • Toccata Gothique could raise me from the dead. This makes me want to die and go to heaven :D

  • niesamowity utwor:D

  • 5 people is Justin Bieber fans...

  • @cross147 What?

  • @willowthebored because there is 5 negative votes ;)

Such a beautiful piece. I want to play this

  • @willowthebored 5 people "disliked" this video so that means they're stupid and they like Justin Beiber if you know who that is..... :D

  • @willowthebored I think he is talking about the dislikes. Thanks for posting this btw!

  • @cross147 Down to 4 Justin Bieber fans now....someone must have actually had their speakers "off" the first time they opened this, then reconsidered.

  • @982Munchie or: had mute youtube, and listening something else at Windows Media Player

  • 3:28 .... perfect moment of greatness and glory

  • Just listening to this on professional headphones you really must be careful as the dynamic harmonic range could lead to serious damage. Heavy Metal rock concerts have no chance competing with this full stop - and I like Heavy Metal.

  • Who else wishes that they could play this? -w-

  • @mimitchi11 I can, it's really not TOO hard IF the keys aren't too hard too press. The quiet middle part can get a little tricky but I'm pretty sure anyone could play the first 30 seconds or so. That's what's awesome about this song, it's good for show cuz it's not too hard but it SOUNDS crazy :D

  • @mimitchi11 you sure can, but you've to practise it like everything in life :D

  • @mimitchi11 Me to I wish is could play it!!!!!

  • 3:29 must be the best sound in the entire world !! volume up full up to 329 then all hell breaks loose!!

  • This is an unbelievable experience! Everyone should hear this!!! Do not need hearing aids for this one!LOL! PULL ouf all the stops and awaaaaaaaaaaayyyy we go! I think my walls are vibrating! I LOVE this. MR. Latry is wonderful and I would love to be able to see him play this masterpiece. He must get very excited too! Wonderful!!!!!

  • This really is an awesome tutti! Oh my, if I could play on such huge organ ...

  • I have never heard a piece of music and an instrument work in such perfect and ferocious harmony together. This piece makes the organ burst into life, move up a few gears and fly - the organ sings. It is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard.

  • If you could attach a keyboard to a thunderstorm, THIS is what it would sound like! Glorious! Probably the best performance of this piece I have EVER heard! Olivier Latry is a musical GENIUS!

  • @pianosrule1 You are right - good thunderstorm analogy - the music is so powerful that You Tube can barely contain its force! It is bursting out of the screen like some force of nature - it is a screaming, thumping, tornado of a tune!

  • Latry sounds like the best in the world every time i hear him!

  • GLORIOUS.

    ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

  • I love this!

  • I think the tempo is just right -- brisk, but not rushed. Best performance I've yet found on YouTube. ^_^

  • good KURWA!

  • I absolutely love this piece! My organ teacher thinks I could learn to play it by Easter xD I'll be so pleased if I can

  • I love this music ... at our wedding it was played as we walked out. I will never forget it

  • Let me clean up the room from the hurricane of sound that just swept through!! Loved it - espec. the reverb effect at the end. Truly the most awesome rendition I've ever heard. Thanks for posting!!!

  • wow.

    that's cool.

  • As raising to the heavens, amongst the bright stars...

  • 5:15

    Wow...

  • wow ' in 3:29 its awesome !

  • Oh I love this!!!!!!! This will be played in my wedding!!!

  • the best version, that I ever heard, so clear and exactly

    5*****

  • That's a totally STONKING sound! Wow!!

  • WOW!!! Tutti!!!!!!

  • I don't know how many videos of this piece I've saved, but this has to be the most powerful! I turn my speakers up full blast and let 'er rip... Awesome

  • At last some one who can do it justis - - - WOW - - - its brought a tear to my eye. At 3.29 give it some ummph thats the way this brings back memorys

  • It´s simply amazing

  • Happy Sunday all!

  • For me, this is THE definitive recording of this movement. This recording is available on CD, with the Symphony VI thrown in for good measure!

  • @petrhsr really??? I would love to get a copy of that recording!

  • @juaniluco888 - I bought my copy from iTunes. The CD is available from BNL Records, item number is BNL 112 617. Enjoy. It's brilliant, especially with the subwoofer on.

  • My god. This must be the most awesome Tutti I have ever heard. Simply can't stop listening to it! Is this from Olivier Latry's CD with the 5th and 6th Symphony on it?

  • @tequilaboy12345

The same. It's a good CD, albeit I really wish the Chamades were less oppressive.

  • @willowthebored i disagree, the chamaredes are amazing in this peice- it makes this organ sound more unique. If you really focus on the power of that organ, headphones at the tutti bit it is too satisfiying!!!

    :D

  • @tequilaboy12345 I think the chamades are less oppressive now. This recording (available from iTunes) was made in the late 1980s before the most recent mods to the Notre-Dame organ.

  • @tequilaboy12345 Two words...Notre Dame :)

  • Glorious! My speakers can't cope.

  • If I was Olive Latry back then playing that peice, I would be having the best 5 +3/4 of my entire life and massive adrenaline rush at 3:29. That is the best tutti ever performed on any organ in that peice in that finale in human history. Jeeze, I have to admit, at that time and in history, the old notre dame organ was and is the most powerful organ that ever existed-wanamaker organ in Plilidelphia doesn't come close!!!!! XD

  • pretty straight-forward played. i like it very much!

  • After watching the play "Big Love" I will never look at this song the same way ever again

  • M-azing! T-riffic piece for weddings! I heard this at an Easter service (postlude) earlier today! Spectacular it was! : )

  • M-azing! T-riffic piece for weddings! I heard this at an Easter service (postlude) earlier today! Spectacular it was! : )

  • I have heard many recordings of this peice and a lot of them were really outstanding. But they don't come close to this! This is the most amazing recording of Widor's Toccata ever made. I think all composers write music and listen in thier head how presise they want thier dynamics to be and I dont think this is exactly what Widor want. GO NOTRE DAME!!! ;)
