ook plz tell me the trombone was supposed 2 to do that =O im sorry im a trombone player and idk if he is some big legend but that kinda dissapointed me =/
When I was a kid, a friend of mines old man was a record producer, specialising in jazz. One of his mates was Diz, who apparently would often stay at their house when he came to London. My mate used to play chess with Dizzy as a kid. One day (after I'd taken up the cornet) this mate gave me a trumpet mouthpiece which belonged to Mr Gillespie. I was only 14 at the time, and did not apreciate its significance. I'm ashamed to say that that mouthpiece ended up being used as a bowl for a bong! Shit!
ya know the dumbass show off in the back is annoying the hell out of me. an occasional stack is ok. but all the time. just shut the fuck up. It's Diz's show. Not yours, mr. "I can play double D's". Woohoo, nobody cares when diz and arturo are up front. he made himself look foolish in this vid.
I love the drum intro! Arturo can really hit those high notes. At about the 2:00 mark, he just takes off! It's like a trumpet dual or something. Dizzy kicks brass! Sorry, bad joke. Is there a musical reason behind Dizzy's unique trumpet shape? Man, that pianist can also really play! Dizzy has some funny facial expressions. I love the squealing trumpets at about 6:15. The sax player has thick spectacles. He takes off at about 7:45.
ya it started when somebody from his band fell into it. he took it to the music shop and had it fixed, than was upset cause he realized he liked the sound better before it was fixed, os he drew it on a sheet of paper and asked somebody to make one for him, just like that.
That's funny, I actually didn't notice the trombonist screwed up the head at first cause I was paying attention at how high he was playing. Man, it's really awful. That must suck. Especially if you're playing with Diz himself. Too much preassure.
Might not have happened had he played the top C and Bb in 3rd position. It's not easy when you know Arturo and Dizzy are watching! Thank god nobody got a video of my first attempt at Gettin' Sentimental Over You!
"goofed" the intro ( sounds cool)but it is after all improvisation that makes it what it is, killer big band shit that is not any more for this world.
nah, the trombone player is chillin with dizz and arturo, you gotta be on point for that shit, and he fucked up not only the first lick but the second one. aside from that, dizz and arturo tear it up, but my boy eero was cold as fuck, he pops this one coltrane-esque lick near the end of his solo that i'm still trying to figure out - gotta be the moneymaker lick haha
Trombone Player was having a bad day. It happens some times, you can find vids of Christian Lindberg cracking stuff too. :P As for the rest, great! Just the stuff you'd expect from Dizzy and Arturo.
I think you guys are being to hard on the trombone player, he doesn't sound all that bad. It isn't the best, but I think part of why it sounds the way it does is his distance from the mic. I've played some great soloes that sounded incredible to the audience that ended up sounding awful on recordings because I was too far/close to the mic.
Man that trombone player botched the head all to hell, never heard it played worse, not only with the mistakes but just horrible played all around lol... he was trying to play it too high.. what a great Dizzy/Arturo thing though
What's this? Candid camera?

Sorry, but I think Dizzy flies higher and higher, with a great respect for Arturo Sandoval!

No media has done more for jazz than youtube.
No media what so ever.
Just think about it...?

It depends on what you look up on youtube. The majority of youtube is trash but there is an abundance of great music and growing everyday.

I marvel at Sandoval's technique, but Dizzy's execution is a lot more mature, controlled, he has more to say.

this video is great....except for the fact that it stops in the middle of dizzy's cadenza! smh....

Its a fine version but a bit too slow for my taste =) I like my bop nice and fast.

Dizzy is the king of Bebop and Arturo is just a beast. I would've loved to see Sandoval and Ferguson go at it...
WillFlex4Food 3 years ago
Charlie Parker is the king of bebop, but dizzy and arturo are up there next to the bird.

Haha, well I'm a trumpet player so I'm victim to bias every now and then...we'll have to agree to disagree on the specific rankings, I suppose.

dude, dizzy wrote the thing! Everything done in the vid is supposed to happen.
So obvs both dizzy and arturo are ok with it.
tammerman175 3 years ago
just because dizzy wrote the thing doesn't mean that that's suppose to happen. it just plain doesnt sound good. and the band missed their cues.
