first off, Cichlids can live in brackish water. So thats PROBABLY what hes doing. Salt is actualy healthy for fish. Second, if a puffer gets along with the cichlids, then its FINE.. Ive had 2 male bettas get along and not fight along with a school of about 15 platies. Nobody will beleive that.. but Its happend. So leave him be. Nice tank bro.
Hello sir. I just wanted to ask you about your puffer and how its doing with the african cichlids? i have a african cichlid tank and had a green spotted puffer for a while but i wasnt protecting him one night and he passed away. so sad :( but i would like to hear more positive stories and successes with gsps and africans if he is still alive let me know please :) thanks!
How is the puffer going to live???? My friend got a puffer without asking me about the water reqs. and it died a few days after. The puffer needs brackish water and the chilids need a different type.
I have a 29 gallon aquarium cichlid aquarium (Next to my epic 75 gallon tropical aquarium) and the 26G has aftican cichlids they are 2-4 inches long and there are 5. The aquarium has TONS of rocks and well i want a puffer. I can get a dwarf puffer green spotted puffer or a figure 8 puffer. Should i get a puffer?!? If i should what type should i get?!? PLEASE RESPOND also each puffer is $15 so i dont wanna waste money.
is it wise and safe to put cichlids in a 10 gallon tank. i have a 10 gallon tank and i have no idea what to get. i love the look of the cichlids (need smaller ones), but ive read so many different things and that they cant live in a 10 gallon tank
@wolverine1865 it isn't reccomended to put cichlids in small aquariums, africans might be okay with 30 being the minimum. dont be afraid to over overpopulate with africans though they need many tank mates and tons more hiding spots.
These fish require totally different habitats and should not be kept together. The gsp should be in brackish water and will require full marine as an adult, not to mention at least 30 gallons all to himself.
not all puffers. this one looks like a spotted puffer and they can be fresh or brackish it depends if the breeder has them in a brackish tank. i have 1 and it is 100% freshwater
umm actually if you do your research you will learn that brackish water does not harm freshwater fish, because salt is like penicillin for freshwater fish
@aredwine33 Freshwater salt might be good for them...
but if you're using marine salt for the SG levels you need... which is what you NEED to use... you'll be causing your cichlids to have Kidney failure.
@aredwine33 i agree with you i out a tsp of salt per gallon in my 55 gallon and i own 4 african cichlids and a pleca and all do just fine but i was wondering could you have a puffer with african cichlids if the water is right?
@aredwine33 i agree with you, i put a tsp of salt per gallon in my 55 gallon and i own 4 african cichlids and a pleca and all do just fine but i was wondering could you have a puffer with african cichlids if the water is right?
@aredwine33 Brackish is not the same as adding aquarium salt. I hope you know at least that much, LOL! And aquarium salt can help freshwater fish by cutting down on bacteria so that the fish's immune system doesn't get overwhelmed, but it is in no way an antibiotic and salt is in no way ok to have in the tank at all times. It is very hard on freshwater fish to live with salt in their environments for longer than it takes to treat a disease. Sounds like someone else needs to do more research. lol
im pretty sure they can since cichlids come from freshwater and brackish environments this one in particular is from freshwater, but fish are resilient if they aren't stressed a little aquarium salt wouldn't hurt.
cool I'm keeping southern american ciclids. i think they look better than the africans so ever thought about switchin to southern american ciclids? you ten gallon can hold like 4 rams
i never really had to...i changed the set up to river rocks since then...but i have another 29 gallon tank with the same sand in it and the cichlids are always foraging through the sand and that keeps it pretty clean so i dont really have to vacuum it...its pretty nice
If you had to vacuum/clean it how would u do it? Because I know the way you do the water change when you suck the stuff from the rock doesn't seem like it would work the same with the sand but I don't know. Have any ideal? And love the setup before they destroyed it.
it is brackish for the puffer...and i just had the cichlids in there while i was setting up another tank for them...now the cichlids are in their new home...and the puffer is all alone with an albino bushy nose pleco
What size tank the the puffer in now? He'll need at least 30g. He'd also appreciate some more decor to keep him busy exploring. Be prepared to move him up to full marine when he reaches 5-6 inches, by the way.
So Since you have your puffer fish which is brackish you are adding salt to the tank?? Cichlids dont NEED salt but ive always used it to keep there stress down.
sand stays on the bottom pretty good even with really active fish...when they kick it up it almost immediately sinks back to the bottom way before it reaches the inlet to the filter....just wash it before you put it in your tank...i put a little bit in a bowl...then ran water over while stirring it with a spoon and let the water run over the bowl getting rid of any bacteria or anything that might harm your fish....any questions feel free to ask...
Be very careful with that puffer in there, they look cute, but they are close to homocidal. They've been known to, in just one day, completely de-fin every fish in their tank, even cichlids. Good looking tank though

@ShammSkeenx012 Yes, cichlids do need a heater. All tropical fish should be kept in water that is between 72 and 78 degrees fahrenheit.

The cool thing about freshwater puffders is that some of them can be acclimated to marine tanks when adults.
