one of the most interesting theories that was explored in starlog magazine was that marty really didnt alter his life through the trip to the past, but exchanged alternate realities with another marty. if i was to remake the film, i would write it in reverse, a sucessful marty through his time travel, winds up ruining his present life.

@em23 well technically he DID ruin his present life in the films by preventing his parents meeting thereby destroying his existance. :) Except he put his wrongs to rights. I assume in your version he'd wind up destroying his existance? Therefore the film itself wouldn't exist without the key protagonist because there'd be no protagnoist to make a film about because he'd destroyed his existance...?

@superrecordsU what i meant was that he would start out with a successful life, go back in time, start meddling with his parents' life, thinking they wouldn't meet (against doc's warnings), get them to meet and fall in love. marty would return to the present thinking everything was ok only to find his present changed for the worst.

@em23 while marty was successful in getting their parents to meet, it was because of marty's actions more than the parents' actions. when marty returns to the present, he sees two people who feel that they were somehow pushed into each other.
