  • I really don't like the drum part on this LIVE perform

  • AYTA EINAI RE GOVAN!!!!THEOS EISAI RE MEGALE!!!THEIKOS HXOS SE AYTO TO LIVE!!!

  • @guitarroast

That's for people who "play" guitar...guthrie usually improvises his solos at shows. His songs aren't overly technical, they do have breaks where it's just a few notes to hold the melody. And if you're going to be writing instrumentals, the guitar has to be technical. Don't diss one of the greatest guitar players of all time when you know nothing about the instrument yourself

  • @GuitarRoast if you by "Music" mean punk, then I agree.

As long as it's musical complexity is good. Also, you seem to be suffering from the misconception that precision and technicality counter feel. In order to play with great feel and phrasing you need a certain lever of control.

  • @GuitarRoast now that's a way to stagnate music. the limits of three chords are (maybe) soon to be reached. and creative souls like mr govan shouldn't listen to music philosophy of one guy proclaiming simplicity, he stands above this fashion-like thinking and does beautiful things

  • that improvisation solo bit in the middle gave me the biggest boner ever

  • Is there a dvd of this somewhere? The sound and video quality is excellent (not to mention the playing!)

  • I love the drummer, playing tradition grip backwards. Neato. Oh, G is pretty good too....

  • @drkevj so would I be hearing that stuff coming out of my speakers!

  • Five people dont like Fives... WHY? please give me a reason cause i cant find any THEY ARE AWESOME

  • What gets me about this song, is overall it's not too difficult, but those two fast tapping licks, and the way he solos over the changes make the song incredibly hard!

  • @drkevj so would I if I could play like that!!

  • i can see guthrie as the type of person that would be into metal

  • Slap me around the face with a stone cold, grey and stinky kipper if that was not amongst your top 3 all time improv guitar solos. I shudder that Paul Gilbert and Steve Morse should do a new "3-on-stage" ensemble...

  • My headphones exploded, such a bad way to end an eargasm

  • I didn't know Jesus could play kick-ass guitar. Oh wait... It's Jesus

  • Thumbs up if you agree that Guthrie Govan is the coolest person on earth, and of course everyone of us wish we could be and play like him...

  • the drums is in mute

  • 2:09 ...he was saying "sorry my mistake" ...humble being that he is ...what a hero!

  • increible realmente como toca este tipo

  • 2:17-2:21 guthrie looks down at his hands and thinks... "god damn, look at that riff! that's fucking tight! i wish i could play that!" 2:23-2:26 overcome by a shocking realization... "wait a sec... holy tits, that's ME playing that!!! shit, i must be fucking jesus or something! i can't wait to see what i do next!"

  • @zooby11isbambam BAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......... i love this comment almost as much as i love guthrie

  • Guthrie told jesus to stop copying :)

  • is john mayer better than guthrie?

  • @hydrolix125 HELLNO!

  • @IverDaBest hahah it was a joke.. hahaha i think guthrie can chop john's head w/ his licks any day

  • @hydrolix125 no.

  • @VintageRabbit yeah....

  • Lol kinda he do a time error all the first part and when the solo comes he pay back this with a god soloing o_O

  • Great video.... But where's the bassist? The camera never goes to him during the whole video, EVEN when he's doing his little solo at 3:23 lol.

  • guthrie could improvise over some chords for a minute and it would be better than something i could write in a year....he is simply the best

  • The lick he plays at 3:17 is........un freakin' real.....One of the best players there is...

  • guthrie's improvisation is mind blowing. it's like every idea i've ever had times a billion bajillion. and then plus 10. so crazy.

  • @kewl2006 but like divide that by 6 and then ,ultiply the result by 13 times the square root of 73.

  • @ShredFever92 Oh of course! How silly of me to leave of the last half of the algebra. If only I could be this good... sigh

  • When he played the lick of death at 2:31, I jizzed my pants....

  • i need a live album cd. watching him live is 1000x better than just audio

  • I tried jamming to this once and both my hands exploded

  • I need to either hang it up or get serious about guitar after watching this! Great doesn't begin to describe the skill level and musicality he possesses. His playing is unbelievably awesome and inspiring.

  • Exelent :D

  • Just watching this guy play puts a smile on my face.

  • to play at that level and still be able to really enjoy it effortlessly, just awesome....

  • @Macchetazo its pretty obvious you have no idea wtf youre talking about.

  • Composición 0

    Feeling 0

    Ego 10

  • @Macchetazo wow... you ignorance went through the roof

  • @Macchetazo wow.... your ignorance went through the roof

  • @Macchetazo wow, you are back-asswards, my friend. he vertually has 0 ego.

  • PIRATE JESUS FTW!

  • Bad assss...

  • i wish i could grow my hair like guthrie

  • man hes like one of the best right now on earth, next to broderick

  • SECO EL WEON!!! buena buena

  • imagine if shawn lane was still alive and him and guthrie teamed up.

  • Drums are low in the mix :( Neat video anyway!!

  • He's hands down one of the best guitarist in the world.

  • he play guitar how Andy Timmons xD

  • @ 0:28 I 'arrived' everywhere due to Guthrie's luscious tone

  • If guthrie was a tree he would be a willow. Because of the hair. And because willows are awesome

  • WTF he's so g00d

  • guthrie.... the best... beast..

  • his tone makes it sound like your swimming in massive bowl of gelatin

being that swimming in gelatin is a dream of mine Guthrie's music really touches my heart

  • Geez, to put it mildly, in terms Mike Stern would use, this guy's is an "MF'r"! It's refreshing to hear a shredder that's actually musical and interesting.

  • lovin it

  • If I was hired as big G's touring rhythm guitarist, the first night would be the best of my life, then the constant humiliation would lead to an early demise.

  • @Fushpud "Big G" made me laugh, kudos.

  • @Fushpud

or maybe youd go buy an espresso machine, practice every waking moment until you were really doing it, and then you'd be having a good time playing some great songs.

there is very little in music that motivation and practice can't reach.

  • @Fushpud Guthrie doesn't need a rhythm guitarist lol, I think you mean guitar polisher or perhaps a pick fetcher.

  • Thats my drum teacher right there! Pete Riley you legend!

  • @Funkydrumbum Lucky you.

  • Guthrie's music touches me in inappropriate ways when i am asleep.

  • LOL

  • @aligatorsandwitch72 HAHAHAHAHHAA

  • All this music needs is some exposure and an open mind. Being open and not trying to moniter what he;s playing and how he;s playing it will either touch you or not. Sure, you'll look and be blown away visually, and even that is where goosebumps can come in, but Music, I think, is best listened to eyes closed and mind open. I just discovered this player tonight, and while he doesnt come up to Shawn Lane, there's no doubt he's among the best musicians in the world.

  • i guess you forgot about the entire half of the world that resents and defies MTV and anything else that promotes the idea that you're not using your creative imagination to flow with music.

  • what does have to do with anything i said?

  • "but Music, I think, is best listened to eyes closed and mind open"

in what way does music television (mtv) NOT defeat that idea?

  • it completely defeats that idea, and the idea's purpose. i dont know where mtv ever came into play. it seems like you;'re almost accusing me of talking about mtv. i despise mtv.

  • nah don't worry i wasn't making accusation. i hate mtv cause they ruined the idea yeah, but they don't even show music on it anymore. i can't remember the last set of music videos played on that show. it used to be 24/7

  • yeah really. popular music is truly a dead end, and has been for years.

  • 1.Shawn Lane

    1a. Guthrie Govan

I think Guthrie will overtake Shawn in musical and creative terms only because hes around and Shawn isn't

  • @kingding6

i disagree. i think shawn lane and guthrie will always be considered equals. lol a lot of opinions come from what guitarist you were introduced to first. for example i first got into slash, which then introduced me to buckethead, which then introduced me to shawn lane, which then introduced me to guthrie govan. slash is far from my favorite though. right now i don't have a favorite, and i like it that way.

  • I think technically they are basically equal, I just think Shawn's compositional abilities were a touch above Guthrie's. Guthrie's album is technically superior to Powers of Ten, But POT makes me feel somthing deeper then erotic cakes does

  • agreed.

  • pot tends to do that.

  • sorry, but gurthies music doesnt touch me in a way that shawn lanes music did. i respect all your opinions and whatnot. but just sayin. after listnin to shawn lane then gurthie. doesnt seem even close.

  • I don't think Guthrie's music touches most people - that's why he's not in the charts etc. But the fact is that Shawn Lane's music doesn't touch most people. Who cares though? Just listen to what you want

  • love this version of fives

    is playing is prime here

  • live way is way better

  • what he does at 3:16 is pure sickness... guthrie has a damn mental issue! he's so stupidly sick!!

  • Send the man a get well card, the man has an illness.

  • for a second i actually took that to be literal, and i panicked a little haha

  • Something 'interesting' happens at 2:08 .... - impressive - he's moving things forward - brought tears to my eyes - a privilege to here that.

  • Govan is the master... There isn't anyone today besides him who can play 14 notes per second and have it actually sound musical... Sure, there are faster players out there, but none of them are as clean as he is... Not by a long shot...

  • To me, "Fives" seems like the ultimate improvisation song. There's almost an entire minute (here 2:34 to 3:24) where the player can just go nuts with whatever he wants to play. That is, of course, if you've got the chops to play the rest of the song and the musical sense to do it ALL in 5/4 time. On the actual track, it sounds like Guthrie himself is improvising, and that's what's so cool about the song. It would make sense, since that riff seems so awesome that it can't be charted on paper.

  • In my opinion, this is most innovative guitarist since the 1980s and technically speaking, the most proficient yet. Dare anyone to post a video response to prove otherwise!

  • I'm interested to know, in your opinion, who was a better improviser pre 1980s ?

  • Before the 1980s I'd have to go with django reinhardt.

1980's included it would be a close call between eric johnson and shawn lane.

  • Hard to be on a list like that when you're missing so many fingers.

  • i think ejs music, tone and phrasing is better but shawn definetly had better technique

  • Shawn.

  • guthrie doesn't suck, no other guitarist that i know of improvises like him, i dunno, i nuh attackin anyone's opinion, but guthrie can't really be matched by many guitarists

  • Opine until the Moon falls from the sky

There is no best. There are however pablum puking critics whom usually have no idea whatsoever. Critics who if the lights were extinguished would not be able to find their butt in the blackness much less discern who is the guitarist they are listenting to if they weren' t told to begin with.Govan is a talented musician who has taken the time to learn and explore with his instrument of choice. Just like every other musician. His talent communicates .

  • point taken lol.. guthrie takes all his time, because, he doesnt shave or cut his hair.. now that's dedication loll

  • time is so precious he spend every minute of it playing guitar rather than doing pointless stuffs such as having his hair cut... hahahaha

  • beeeeeetz im gunna hunt you down steal your dog if you have one. this guy is more advanced than everyone else out there!

  • Its not just guthries playing ability which makes him 'Amazing' or fucking Jesus like, its his Knowledge of music and how he applies it to his instrument, through his playing i personally think we hear years of intense learning, hes not just good, hes fucking good as fuck! Very very clever man

  • I belive sitting there like a fucking smartass is the most ridicolus thing to do, not to actually praise one of the greatest guitar players ever born! Unless you could name someone better, or actually play something better urself, u have nothing to say, so just shut up!

  • o_O really....

  • you forgot the "in my opinion" behind "shawn lane is better".

    -1

  • yeah if he's just "good" 95% of the guitar players in this area should just choke themselves with their guitars

  • i have 4 licks in my bag of tricks, he has 4, 400, 444, 444, 440.44

  • Is he playing a Schecter?

  • He plays Suhr guitars.

  • 2:41 to 2:44 western swing?

  • sick!!!!

  • he duz not look like dime at all,,, still, awsum song, my favorite

  • he looks like jesus

  • He is jesus....

  • this is another good guitarist, no more than so..

the people always put the good guitarists like gods and this is so stupid.. sorry but it's certainly..

now go and pray him if he could give you a miracle

  • so... he's just a "good" guitarist... if he's just good, all of us are like shit and can throw our guitars out of the window... i would say he is UNBELIEVABLE or FUCKIN AMAZING... now go and try to be "good" too...lol

  • well it's okay .. as you said

fuckin' amazing .. but not like jesus, because that is so stupid

  • Why get so serious about it??... Twas a joke... why do you feel the need to comment things calling people stupid and what not?? thats just plain nasty.. so have a think before you next say something disrespectful to someone... Okay??

  • Some people really respect Jesus and think that His name should be used with the utmost respect.

  • and some people don't. get over it

  • Are you referring to the atypical modernist, generally accepted vision of Jesus or the swarthy more Middle eastern caricature of Jesus or the angelic engraved on chapel walls image of the Christ, or are you just so close to him that you recall how he looks like from instant memory? I had no idea they had cameras back then, but at least now I can take comfort in knowing how he actually looked. My point is you can listen to a musician of this calibre and that is what you would leave as a comment?

  • Fucking insanity... :O <--- = SHOCK...

  • He looks like Dimebag, awesome player!

  • what? dimebag?

  • he is unreal, his playing is so clear and full of soul,

    John Shur guitars rock!!!!!!

  • Is John still making them? Cool.

  • Holy smokes! What a discovery.

  • 2:31 just melts my face really

  • yea...hahah actually all the 5:09 was melting mine:)

  • i wanna learn this

  • so....do it...

  • Guthrie govan is sooooo sick, but he looks so dimebag when the red light hits him haha

  • 5/4 time

  • 3:16 Holy hell!

  • wow this version is incredible...so emotional & rocks!!!

  • Woops I clicked the wrong thumb :-) I agree, this version is certainly the best I've seen 4 now !

  • my favourite song off him

  • anyone knows who the bassist is?

  • the bass player is guthries borther if im not mistaken

  • He's name is Seth.

  • problaly his brother seth gocan

  • Dude....please learn how to spell Govan or i might have to shoot you.

  • Oh my bad=( I always type to fast

  • guthrie is not from this planet!!!

  • yeah, i was watching independence day the other night... that must be where he came from

  • Wow didnt realise David Beckham was Guthries drummer.

  • how dare you insult pete riley!

  • guthrie should really sell such improvisations as bonus-tracks on his albums, he could make three awesome versions of just one song

  • multiple takes would make a nice addition, nice suggestion :-D

  • his chord voicing in 0:37..

    remind me of eric johnson..

  • nice to hear him using a few fx for a change - even its just a few seconds t the beginning. Also he plays the first few time thru without overdrive! Sounds like Zappas Pink Napkins

  • 3:17 to 3:19 What a lick....what a lick!!!

  • Apparently that's got something to do with octave displacement. I know what it is in theory but can't put it into practice yet.

  • holy fxxk just got to that bit...its like "i havnt done Buckethead in awhile ill throw a bit in for the craic"

  • Ive just seen the face of GOD.

  • gg's impro is amazing and unexpected! like 3:17

  • Great performance here. This was improvised in a lot.. anybody who is familiar with the album and guthries live performances will know he never plays the songs identical to the album, theres a lot of improvisation going on, with only the key/memorable parts being played as on record.

  • Not true!

All the parts are memorable ;)

  • Nice! : )

  • All parts are unforgettables!

  • Isn't that... like... what I said?

  • Pretty much!!

The point is that memorable is when something is likely to be remembered and unforgatable is when something WILL be remembered.

  • 1:50-54, damn

  • 0:00 - 5:10, damn

  • Best Part

  • really good sound by the way, thanks for posting.

  • what guitar is that? Its got a really nice sound.

  • its a Suhr not sure what model though
