Duct tape is great just remember to NEVER cover the nose. If you cover the nose and the mouth you will soon have a dead sub :-(

I think the little swiss cheese balls you're talking about are golf practice balls. Fairly small, if i remember right, though. One that i've had some success with is a stress ball, with a hole poked through the middle of it.
They're kinda weird though, cos you can close your jaw, but they'll try and force it back open. Very soft and springy. One concern (that i found tonight) is that they can, after a while, be bitten through, which raises choking hazard concerns.

because in humans you can't put the bit behind the teeth.. the jaw isn't set up the same way.
