Amaazing man beautiful! a MASTERPIECE!. it's like The Holy Grail of guitars!. Just one question... can you actually buy one (not from that year of course) but gold-top. and with BLACK PARTS? that would be AWESOME!
That is a beautiful guitar. I prefer the 1959 Les Paul Standard "Holy Grail" guitar than that one but I would not turn that down neither if I had the chance to own one.
I owned the very same instrument and thought the black had been changed ...but they were original ... mine had the hang tags and the finish had not greened or oxidized ... when stage lights hit the top it reflected a rainbow like gasoline on a puddle ... the neck pickup was to die for the bridge pickup was nothing special ... you could pull a string (unplugged) and come back the following Thursday and it was still ringing .... It was the one that got away I own an R7 ... close but no banana

hahaha even tho it relle is in incredible condition, it was funny wen he said " theres slight... slight button scratching" and the second he turns it a little more, the light on the bak of the guitar reveals like 1000 more scratches haha but man that is one incredible guitar. go les paul!!!
QUESTION: I bought a used les paul gold top in 1974 (I sold it a few years later)......my question is...what years did they make the Gibson "gold top " style. The one I had was in mint condition. I am wondering if mine was from the 60s or 50s
This video doesn't do it justice, plug it into a Line 6 Modelling amp, turn the gain up really high, and maybe add some extra juice with a Zoom multi FX pedal. Only then will this baby come alive.
I agree with jacksons I've seen this guitar its absolutely original and in amazing condition. As for the provenance its definitely worth checking out!
I thought this was a 57' Lp if so keep the damn guitar in frame damn. the title isnt 57 year old man. Shit theres not even a whole frame of the guitar itself.
Not only does it sound incredible, but it's just such a beautiful guitar. I'm a Fender guy myself but if I were to get a Les Paul I'd get one in this kind of finish.
This guitar must have been stored in climate controlled space, because it looks almost impossibly mint. My guess its hardly ever been played. Ive played a few early 50's, and this finish is nothing like those. IMO, this one stinks, it looks way to new. worn gold tops look greenish, and always have checking.
i love the guys passion for it .... its like he forgets he is on camera , he is so amazed by its like he is praying to lep paul , and i dont blame him
So i also have this guitar. It is all original 1957 w/ black plastic. It was my fathers who was a musician and now it belongs to me. How do i learn more about it and what type of value does it have?
I think I agree with the others who say this a post 1968 les paul. I read alot of the comments and wonder if you ever had it authenticated by Gibson? Lot's of rich people bought things that weren't. The tuning peg keys wouldn't look that good after 53 years
@Danh103663 - but Dan, if it were a "post 1968" the whole construction, dimensions and hardware would be different. Not subtle things to pass off. You'd be better off saying its a great replica than saying it's a 70's or newer instrument. Even the 4-knob control placement on later Gibson LPs is too high up on the lower bout... a dead giveaway on the Reissues.
Ironically the best-playing vintage guitars don't usually look as 'collectible; and near-perfect. Rare to have both qualities.
I SAW THIS GUITARS TWIN IN New York. I think its a 1 of 2. or weas tht an older year? IDK but i asked the guy and he said " yeah, that Gibson is 1 of 2 and the other one is in Australia!" wat a coinkeydink =P
what year gold top is the really expensive one? I saw one in new york that had faded to a piss green kind of color-price tag $60,000 and that was year 2000 i think?
It is realy a beautiful guitar! Realy deep gold finish unlike with 57 reissue that has a more soft gold color. joe Bonammasa's guaitr is coming out like that really beautiful but unreasonably expinsive... dark backs are nice too... I will try to build up a goldtop with black hardware dark back.... But I cannot find a 56 at this moment and gibson extra hardware is realy expensive...
This may be a '57, but the black plastic is from a LP Custom, and if the gold is an original finish, I'll kiss someone's ass... I have a '52-early '53 that was expertly refinished in '87 with the original paint formula, and only 23 years later, mine's green.... . The best girl I own(esp. tonally), but she's old and fragile, I've broken the headstock twice, myself, and she was found with that wound....on consignment from Billy Crain in a music store in Tampa... best 350 I ever spent.
Thanks for your comments, but this guitar is dead original and has great provenance and has been very well known for a long time. In case you were not aware a very select amount of early '57s were released with Black plastic. This guitar has been featured in quite a few books and magazines over the last few decades too.
So i also have this guitar. It is all original 1957 w/ black plastic. It was my fathers who was a musician and now it belongs to me. How do i learn more about it and what type of value does it have
@jacksonsrareguitars - absolutely, and it's worth reading the history of the instrument, especially with that other gent being an owner of an early gem!
Gibson played with specs periodically here and there, did some strange things with varying parts, and one-offs, including I believe one solid-color '57 red top with PAF hums. AFAIK some P-90 gold tops were also sold with black soapbar pickups instead of white. And I think this Black-on-Goldie is absolutely beaut, thanks for sharing!!
@jacksonsrareguitars I always liked my 57 LPs more than the few 59s that came around. BTW my uncle was a personal friend of Johnny Smith, and both owned music stores in Colorado. I think the coolest thing Gibson we ever had was a 20s Loar F-5. I would rather have it than a 59 LP Std. Sorry. I'd sell the 59 and have a lot more stuff that I could actually play. My mom got a custom made Hummingbird serial number 40XXX 1961 with a long scale neck on it through Smith. Turned down $36K offer from GC.
've seen a couple of original goldies... it is true they get a little bit green and start to have waves like old women!:OP:O But 40+ years old 23 y refinished ...bizzare... Did you take care?:P
Um gibson goldtops are worth far more than 85 bucks so what ur selling is def not one! can't wait to get my gold top it may take a very long time though
im saving up to buy one hope i get lots of xmas money aha who cares if it has got a bit of wear on it a guitar is supposed to be like that . each guitar has its own story !
that 52 Gold top on ebay is it me or did they not introduce the tuneomatic bridge untill 57, the 52's usually have a stop tail piece.....................??????
Hi. The '52 has been modified. The old tailpiece has been removed and replaced with a stop-tail & tune-o-matic. Replace pickups as well. These mods would make it a great candidate to turn into a 54-56 conversion...
if you guys love this guitar, look at michael jackson signed guitar on ebay,it will make you want to puke.a 100% original 52 goldtop paul, signed all over by the jackson family.the price keeps dropping because the seller is too stupid to realize its a $300,000 guitar if he would just wipe off their molestation marks.
Almost: The Bonamassa signature was based on a slightly later original 57 goldtop with black parts + Dark back with black back plastic that he played as a kid. That guitar was painted black to hide flaws (or cracks?) in the wood. Gibson used to do that on juniors as well back then..This jacksonsguitar is early 57 and has the brown back plastic...A Fantastic VERY rare find..Still i'd go for the affordable Dark Back '57 VOS reissue and change out the cream hardware! ;-)
Damn, i rated 1 star, i didn't meant too. Error. I would rate 5 because this rocks great playing, although i dont like that gibson very much (reminds me slash, just because of that)
Great playing and a beautiful guitar. When it comes to the arguments about the value of 50's Les Pauls... you either get it or you don't. Who cares what it sounds like next to a current model? The current model would never exist were it not for the originals. And the originals are exceedingly rare. And to actually own and play one? Well, that's why they're going for a ton of money, isn't it?
i Finnaly Found Out What The Gold Top Looks Like With Black Hardware I Was Thinkin About Buyin blavk hardware but i never knew what it would look like
I agree.. I even think 100k is mental for a guitar! Anyway.. my mate brought round his original 57 and I made a vid of it against my 2007 R9.. I could tell there was a difference in sound yeah, but was it $290 worth of difference? I dont think so..
Hand it over pal:)

Hi. The '52 has been modified. The old tailpiece has been removed and replaced with a stop-tail & tune-o-matic. Replace pickups as well. These mods would make it a great candidate to turn into a 54-56 conversion...

if you guys love this guitar, look at michael jackson signed guitar on ebay,it will make you want to puke.a 100% original 52 goldtop paul, signed all over by the jackson family.the price keeps dropping because the seller is too stupid to realize its a $300,000 guitar if he would just wipe off their molestation marks.

haha i saw that what an idiot, its definitly worth more without the signatures.

Since Les die, keep it as long as possible then you can sell it for a million or two.

like the bonmassa one
SSol28 2 years ago

I agree.. I even think 100k is mental for a guitar! Anyway.. my mate brought round his original 57 and I made a vid of it against my 2007 R9.. I could tell there was a difference in sound yeah, but was it $290 worth of difference? I dont think so..
