@phlodnarS Once she proclaimed that she would be a virgin for life, she would be sentence to death if she had sex with a man. The man will also be sentenced to death as well. Just how that worked in the past.

Back then many women saw the hardship of other women whom got married and the silk industry work allowed them to live financially independently, so they decided no to marry for the rest of their lives. Once they declared that, their parents and others could not force them to marry. And they cannot have sex with other men. Otherwise, they will be treated as having sex with someone who's married.
