It's not just gender roles. There's also a physical cause, hormones that effect brain development. Granted gender roles may have helped push some of us along, but to call us men who can't handle masculinity kinda flies in the face of scientific evidence (though admittedly not the most rock solid evidence).
Anyway this is anecdotal and subjective; but aside from dress and taboo against sleeping with men (both just minor things for me) I've never really felt gender roles were pushing me away.

Everyone has hormones effecting their brain. Is everyone crazy? Sure I have mental problems, but that doesn't make me crazy by any reasonable stretch of the word. People with migraines have mental problems, same with alcoholism. Everyone, I suspect, has mental problems; it's part of being human. "Crazy" people on the other hand are generally regarded as either dangerous or having a warped sense of reality or serious social problems. Also I've met some very nice "crazy" people. :)
