  • Hi I wanna make a shirt like that but I wanted to know first if the thickness of the shirt matters and I wanna know what kind/brand of dye did you use in this video.... Is it also possible to use a colored shirt and produce the same outcome when using a plain shirt?... your answer really matters to me... thanks... :)

  • instead of the string can we use rubber bands?

  • just curious, what dye do you use?

  • what if i dont have soda ash? how to i prevent the color from not staying on the shirt?

  • Great job. But I wouldn't wear that myself.

  • how do you keep your shirts from fading after you wash them? i always have a problem with that

  • I use zip ties, threaded backwards so I can easily slide them off when I'm done. A lot quicker for me than tying knots, and no cutting.

  • did you throw it in wash right after u did it or wait till it dried under plastic?

  • good job !

    TO-SHIRT dot com

  • Thanks man

  • make me a shirt

  • What type of dye do you use that requires you to use soda ash?

  • @MrIzzyHollister Brad uses fiber reactive dyes. I get mine from Dharma Trading Company.

  • Brad's instructional dvds are the best. I bought them because he is easy to follow and explains everything he does as he goes. He even shows how to do the yin yang pattern which is one of my favs. Thanks, Brad. I hope you do some new videos, soon. Peace and love to you.

  • ohmygosh! the shirts are amazing! i really love the peece sign and heart design, i want tu learn now! hmm but where could i get bottles of ink like yours? and what is soda ash? :-/

  • @SmileHunii - Thank you! I teach both the peace sign & the heart pattern (plus others) in my original video you can download from my website. In it I also teach about soda ash, and the other chemicals I use. You can order dyes over the internet or buy a starter kit at like Wal-mart or Hobby Lobby. You should grab one of my classes to really get a boost! Good Luck!

  • @mrtiedye25 - awh sweet buhhtt i dont fink australia has a wal-mart? :-/

    we have k-mart though lol

  • this is flippin awesome!

  • I did this today but my on my first try and it came out really good but the fan folding is hard with little experience.

  • fan folding is hard for me

  • where do you buy your dye?

  • That's pretty fucking cool... and this is coming from a dude who would never wear that in his life :P

  • wow too bad we dont get dyes in them bottles :(

  • sweet video dude.

  • i have 3 of your dvds and a couple of your downloads and they helped so much. i highly recommend these dvds! i learned alot from them

  • You're a good instructor. :-)

  • if you use RIT dye you don't need to prewash in soda ash and the dye is really inexpensive too.

  • Does it have to go in that soda ash water ?

or can it just be water

  • that came out way sick!!!!!!

  • lykee the vid buti'm to lazy to make it lol (:

    would yuhh sell me one??

  • do you absolutly have to wash the shirt in ash soda? i did the spiral patter on a shirt and it came out fine, but what does the ash soda do for it?

  • do u put cloroch when u wash it???????

  • what brand of dye do you use? and could you do this pattern with just one color and like soak it in that one color?

  • We have been doing Tie dye's following this pattern. They look great but our problem is that when we wash them the colour fades to very pastel colours. We have used Soda Ash and a fixative in the dyes which it calls for. Why is this happening?

  • @leviugga - Are you using procion & 100% cotton? I teach all this in my first video plus 8 cool patterns, and in my fourth video plus 5 cool patterns if you want to check it out.

  • @leviugga rinse it in cold water until it's mostly clear, hang-dry it and iron it afterwards. Then you should be able to wash it normally. But dyes always fade after a while. i hope that helps.

  • great techinique, but doesn't washing it in hot water strip it of the dye?

  • @EatColorBlue - IMO this is best. By the time you wash in hot water the chemical reaction should be complete. So you want all of the removable pigments to be washed out so they don't get on your skin or other clothes.

  • @mrtiedye25 ok that makes sense!

  • why not just use rubber bands

  • @XESKAYO1 Rubber bands are fine to use

  • wooow thats how u do it!!!!! wonderful!!!

  • thats siiiick

  • what dyes should i use? where can i get them?

  • @actionbastard1000 walmart or michaels theirs like 2.50 each dye

  • so you sell the videos for the other patterns?

  • @chicopalomita - yes I have 4 videos. The first teaches how & what to mix plus 8 patterns, the second teaches the tricks to making the star pattern, the third teaches techniques used to make the butterfly pattern, and the 4th video "The secret to Advanced Tie Dye" teaches 5 patterns: guitar, music note, turtle, yin yang, & phoenix bird. All can be ordered from my website PhatDyes.com

  • this was a great video thank for explaning everything!!! i had a good time tie dyeing!!!

    thanks again

  • Can you do a cross design?

  • thats really cool. thanks :)

  • is it okay just to use rubberbands? ahh

    the t looks sick!

  • @randizzlebaybee - on this one using rubber bands is fine

  • you don't have to use soda water. i put salt in warm water, and a little salt in each dye. it helps the shirt absorb the dye better. it looks like the soda ash absorbs better though.

  • do u have to do the soda ash. can u just soak it in water before u actually use the dye

  • what type of dye do you use? hair dye, food dye?

  • do you necessarily NEED the soda ash??

  • but what colors are used? those for the printer for the white hair or what?

  • amazing. thanks!!!! i will do that and i will put a video of it on my account. Just visit me at endless peace. its my band but i will put the shirt in my other video icon. Anain THANKS!!!!!!!!!

  • hello, a query ... to be placed so that the color is impregnated and not miss?

    thanks

  • dude i went there and u have to pay

  • What is soda ash water? Is is baking soda & water? Or where do you buy it from?

  • its harder then he makes it look.great vid

  • very beautiful design.

  • very cool :)

  • that is so freakin cool! i love the way it turned out.

  • Will the shirt leave a mess, in the washer machine?

Can you put more than one in the washer machine?

If you make more than one. Or will the paint mix with the other?

  • That awsome! I wish I could have it =)

  • how long do you let the shirt soak in the soda ash? I have read some leave it in there for a couple of hours and some just run it through a couple of times. What is the way you do it? Just like you did in the video for that minimal amount of time?

  • @Dabiggame - I usually let the cotton soak for a bout 15 min. Make sure to get all the air out.

  • dude you are a genius!!!

  • Hey Brad, thanks so much for this! I tie-dye too, and sell my stuff at craft fairs, festivals and online; I've been wanting to branch out and do some of the more complex stuff for a while now - I can see by this video that I'm gonna like your teaching and dyeing style well enough to go ahead and buy some of your downloads soon, so I can learn even more!! Thanks SO much for offering this. It's extremely helpful.

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • Beautiful

  • Pouring out of the mother******* area here :D

  • Hey Brad. Your vids are really cool. I bought your 3 discs and am waiting for your 4th one on Advanced patterns. I hope you are mending nicely and back on track soon. Take care.

  • @Uniquelyyours1 I should have video 4 on DVD in just a few weeks. It has been ordered!

  • @mrtiedye25 Hi Brad. I ordered your advanced patterns and it is amazing. Thanks, too, for all the extra tips. Anyone who needs to get to that next level should get this dvd. Peace and love to you.

  • That was helpful i have been wanting to tye die a bikini.

  • Hi dzerimar,

i have a bit of experience tie dying, and i don't want to ruin your plans or anything -- but generally fabric dyes work better with natural fabrics -- namely cotton or hemp, and are much less effective on synthetic fabrics, which swimwear is usually made of. just keep this in mind, or you might find your colours to not be very bright or last very many washes. peace :)

  • Man , this is pretty coool :P . Im thirteen , i live in winnipeg Manitoba and im so into tie dye its not even funny XD , although i dont own a tie dye shirt. Because i cant find any . Im starting to amek my own i have everything i need except soda ash . Where can i find this and is it an absolute necesity

  • hey, you can get soda ash from the supermarket in the cleaning aisle, alongside chemicals for pools. good luck :)

  • man u waste alot of dye doing this... is it ok if i kinda cheap out on this and only use a little instead of leaving my stuff drenching?

  • U thought I wasted it, but I actually used the dye. The cotton was wet, so the dyes have forced the preexisting soda ash water out, and have mixed with it making it look like more. So it's up to you. Using less will change the outcome of color volume, not the shape of the pattern. I think the price per cup of dye is cheap enough to use it how I need. You should do it how you need. You could use less and call it technique. Depends on your goal. Good Luck!

  • @metallhedz i like usin just a little bit of dye, its not real tiedye unless at least a 4th of the shirt has white on it still haha

  • What kind of dye should i use?

  • soda ash water??

  • exelent en español no tienes indicaciones? xD pero = se entiende

  • This was actually pretty cool. It's definitely a labor of love though, gives me a new respect for tie-dye. Awesome design! Nice vid, did a great job explaining things too.

  • Thanks Freebyrd7!

  • what kind of dye can you use

  • what kinda marker like a crayola

  • Yep, washable!

  • thanks

  • when you dye the shirt, do the dyes in the bottles have to be warm?

  • I let my dyes sit at room temp.

  • instead of letting it dry you can put in the microwave for 30 minutes then let dry for 5 minutes then put it back in the microwave for 15 minutes if necessary.

  • I've never done this, but I have heard of others doing it.

  • And wanted to specially thank you for giving "free lessons", not many people share their "gifts" but you do, which is fantastic and God will pay you for it. thanks a lot!

  • Thank you :-)

  • Im surprised to see how easy you make it look and how pretty the result is! Congratulations it is a very nice job!

  • Thank you. I've been doing this for a long time. It takes many many tie dyes to develop a style. I made all the videos to help others learn fast, so they don't have to spend 19 years developing a good style.

  • Your shirts are really good :) Thanks for this how to.

  • What exactly does soda ash do?

  • I have some new tips about soda ash on my website. Go to my site, click on TIPS from the left Navigation bar.

  • I'm seeing a lot of questions regarding washing soda here and figured I should chime in a mention that washing soda, at least the arm and hammer super washing soda brand is the same ingredient as soda ash (unadulterated with additives), except it has a bit more of a moisture content. About a cup and a half of washing soda per gallon of water works just fine for my tie dying purposes and the arm and hammer brand can be found in a lot of grocery stores next to the laundry detergents.

  • I went to the website and saw they use Procion, whats wrong with RIT Dye, and If I can't get ahold of the procion stuff, what would be the best method of keeping my colors good when using RIT....My shirts are always ruined after the first wash.

  • I have some new tips about RIT Dyes on my website. Go to my site, click on TIPS from the left Navigation bar.

  • i was wondering if you can tell me what type of ink you use and where can i get it ??

  • where can you buy soda ash??

  • hobby lobby

  • nevermind i found out what i was doing wrong

    thanks for the help

  • never mind

i found a new way of doing it with different dyes

    thanks alot for the help

    the shirts turned out amazing!

    WOW

    A++++

  • ok every time i make this design i will wash it off with cold water and the colors always spread

for instance if i have a yellow and purple the colors will max into a violet color.

i am not sure at all what im doing wrong

  • what are the measurements for the soda ash and water?

  • What kind of shirts are best? 100% cotton? I found that thicker, softer shirts with a little spandex absorb more of the color better.

  • Is there any particular reason why you use the wax-coated string? Or is it possible to use normal string, without it affecting the quality of the dye pattern? Ta :-)

  • In this case the string does not matter. You could use any type of string or rubber band.

  • cool !!!

  • That is an awesome design! My wife and I are going to start trying to do tie-dye with our kids. I do have one question, though. After the shirts set, do you rinse them before washing them? I've seen some videos where they do that. I didn't notice that step in this video. Thanks in advance!

  • I've just started myself, and although you can rinse a shirt out in the washing machine, it is best to wash it off with a hose and gently ring out with shirt before washing, because you are going to be adding salt in the washing to make the colours more vibrant, and you don't want too much loose dye in that would use up your salt. Good luck

  • nope, straight to the wash

  • Hello, it wanted to dye remere some and wanted to know that painting is the one that they use and with that material she is dissolved, if it is a painting for fabric wanted to know if it is some especially or if I must not use algun type .. thank you an embrace!!

  • that was cool thanks man

  • Soda ash is Na2Co3, sodium carbonate, it helps you to bond the dye to the material

  • Yup! But be careful because it has a ph of 10.2.. be very careful, but the more you squeeze from the shirt, the brighter the colours will be.

  • so, the more you squeeze out of the shirt means brighter colors? could someone please explain this?

  • What's soda ash?

  • what does soda ash water mean? i'm sorry if this seems dumb in a way, i'm kinda new at this. thanks to the person that answers my question. :)

  • It's just a term I use to describe the solution after the soda ash has been mixed with the water.

  • Im dUmb .. hOw dO U mAkE thE cOlOrEd wAtEr .. Any Ink wOrks ????

  • you are the man

  • Do batik dyes work well for this stuff?

  • I'm not sure. I've not done any batik. I think it would depend on the viscosity of the dyes.

  • what i did instead of soda ash was i used baking soda but i put the baking soda in a pan and let it steam first. it steams out into soda ash. illget in tomorrow and see if it works

  • what type of dye do you use? the one i have found is originally powder... but it sucks and they dont have a lot of different colors... i found those at walmart... i dont like them, could you give me a brand name to fetch?

  • I've posted links to Dye suppliers on my website. Go to the section call "Buy the Dye"

  • can u use like salt instead of soda ash ..,. and if no were can u buy soda ash

  • I've posted links to Dye suppliers on my website. Go to the section call "Buy the Dye"

  • i want to get your video #1 but i saw that it was around 20 mins and that made me a bit cautious. do you go into this much detail with all 8 of the designs? particularly the peace sign. thats the design i really want.
