@vaibhavfromindia There are two parts to a compass: a magnet and a bearing. For a strong enough disc magnet, I'm showing in this video that you can use the magnet itself as the bearing.
That's a neat trick. If you can't see that, you're not paying attention.
@TheGyroid This is *making* a compass. One end points north, one end points south. Physics does that for us. To label it, you need to already know which way is which. The labels-- that is, which end of the earth we call north and south --are given by humans. Physics does not provide a way to tell north from south-- those are just names given by humans.
Of course, agreed!!! But most people think that the magnetic pole is in the told North and it´s not, it´s in the south, that´s what I wanted to clarify. If it´s a rule for the magnetic pole be in the North so our worldmap is upside down!
it's not a rule for the magnetic north pole to be north actually. it's the geographic north pole that's always in the north. the geographic north pole (or whatever it's name is) is not in the same place as the magnetic north pole actually.
So why did we decide like that? ...probably because the roman empire wanted to be "on the top" of the world because it means superiority!!! And then they started doing like that.
or maybe you've got an inferiority complex and the real reason is that it looks the best the way it is. or heck, it might be a completely random thing.
that's if you point two magnets together. The north and south pole are named as such just because of their position. Most people who actually have degrees know that.
are you saying that the north and south poles don't distinguish themselves into a magnetic dipole? I doubt that you have a degree in anything btw. Thanks for the inaccurate input tho. :)
I'm saying the magnet's can't distinguish which pole has more pull than the other. Labeling a magnet "North" or "South" doesn't make it intelligent to figure out which side points to where.
here's a better explanation. Opposites attract... we can agree with that (North to south, south to north). If the north pole of a magnet is pointing to the North Pole... THEN shouldn't the North Pole be the South Pole? For consistency and to avoid confusion, our magnets are labeled in reverse.
700,000 years ago, the North Pole was the north pole. It abruptly switched poles and scientists can't explain it.
yeah, I knew that, but that was way before anybody used a compass, i thought you were saying something that you weren't aparently. You realize we're the only people still looking at this clip. haha
and yeah, you just label it north on a compas because it points roughly towards geographic north.
This is making a compass and labeling its sides, not using the compass to figure out which way is which-- you need to already know which way is north and south.
In this case, I happened to know that I live in the northern hemisphere and the sun was out at mid-day, meaning that if I'm facing the sun, I'm facing south.
If you have that magnet. You haven't done anything accept you bought it

Well where do you get those kind of magnets?
PokemonTrainerCaseyR 1 year ago
You need to know the poles of the magnet
SloRollah 2 years ago
just use a real compass to calibrate it
AudunBarsk 2 years ago
@SloRollah no you don't need them, you need to know where north is.
RonTheelen472 1 year ago
how do you know which of the 2 outcomes is north? why couldn't the one you labled as north be south?

i can tell time and direction by reading the sun
it comes in handy
its not like people carry around buckets
of water and neodymium magnets
with them...:-P
but good video anyway :-)
imagirly1234 2 years ago
I can too, but what if I asked you which way is north or what time it is at night?
not that handy anymore, ain't it. :)
Verradonairun 2 years ago
you would have to memorize the way while the sun is up :)
imagirly1234 2 years ago
I guess you're right....sorry...^_^
Verradonairun 2 years ago
its ok XD
imagirly1234 2 years ago
your neodymium magnet will rust if you keep it in the water.
lighteelco 2 years ago
yeah really easy all you need is a neadinium magnet...
lolerdelol 2 years ago
And how do you know which way actually is north without checking real compass
noneactive 2 years ago
maybe check the position of the sun?
lolerdelol 2 years ago
You can use the North Star Polaris at night. Look for the little dipper (Ursa Minor) and it should be at it's tail.

how do you know which way is north and south if its double sided?
sagsteriscool 3 years ago 2
you have to know which way is north one time to make it...lol, then you just have to label it.

you have a 50/50% guess, now adays you can use a bit commen sense to figure out which way the sun is moving. since its moves only one way.
HazreihelUchiha 3 years ago
if the sun rises on your right and sets on your left, you are facing north. then vice versa.

Considering that there is evidence that the magnetic poles switch every few billion years, at some point the "north pole" really was magnetic north.
Slavkody 3 years ago
whichever hemisphere you are, the magnet points towards the pole with the stronger pull.

wow... thats so wrong. Like poles don't ever attract. Most 3rd graders know that.
