FDR had almost nothing to do with the start of the great depression. the depression started in '29 during HOOVER's presidency less than a year after Coolridge's 2nd term. both of them were pro-biz btw. The economy kept getting worse until Hoover left office in '32, and only begun recovery after FDR took office in '33.

There was a stock market crash which would have led to a recession but FDR took the measures that Hoover started and just made them bigger. The deflation in 1873 was consumer goods deflation caused by an increase in productivity and not a decrease in demand. It was called the second industrial revolution and America prospered more during this time than any other in history.
