many people get that confused, mainly because people who were born in the US refer to them selves as americans. in truth any one who was born in the US, Canada, Brazil, Peru or any other country in the continent that is America is called American. just as any person who was born in France, Germany, Spain and so on is called European.

USA means: The United States of America.
